A unique blend of poetry, aggression, power and skill!!!.......2003-12-29
I consider this work to be their best.No moronic lyrics here. A heartfelt recording that will stand the test of time. Just listen to the song "Children".
Not near as good or inspired as their self-titled effort.......2003-02-15
I hate it when good bands with a lot of talent suddenly decide to change their sound drastically. That's what Vicious Rumours did with Welcome to the Ball. They took the soaring, melodic, graceful quality out of their songwriting, and opted to go for a hardcore thrash/speed metal sound instead. Big mistake. This album lacks the inspiration and creativity that so characterized their self-titled effort. While there are a couple of good tracks, it's plain to see the magic is gone here. But then, if you like your metal thrashy and pointless, you might like this. Check out their self-titled first. You won't be sorry.

Classic Metal Album Reissued.......2006-12-02
As influential as Vicious Rumors was, particularly on the thrash scene, you'd think they would get a bit more recognition. As it stands, it seems like only the true metal faithful give this band the credit they deserve. This particular Vicious Rumors album could go toe to toe with just about anything Anthrax or Megadeth was releasing at the time.
Even if you don't consider the 1990 self-titled album to be THE Vicious Rumors album, you have to admit that it comes close. It was released just after Digital Dictator and just prior to Welcome to the Ball, and at a time where the band was absolutely on top of their game. Every song on this album is incredibly strong, and the band's high octane mix of power metal and thrash metal styles is very effective. It's heavy, fast, and aggressive, but melodic enough that you can sing (or shout) along with the lyrics. Founder Geoff Thorpe lays down some incredible guitar work here, and vocalist Carl Albert (RIP) is in top form as well.
This is what real metal in the early 1990's was all about. Serious metal fans owe it to themselves to check out Vicious Rumors, and this album is as good a place as any to start.
NOTE: While I'm certainly grateful to Wounded Bird for reissuing this great metal album, it would have been even better to hear it digitally remastered and with some bonus material added for good measure. Oh well, I'll take what I can get.

Metal at its finest.......2006-08-28
Had this cassette forever getting ready to order cd. great metal, really good songs. Great guitar work mark very overlooked metal shredder very tasteful with tons of chops.great vocals slick production.
One of the best metal albums I've ever heard.......2003-02-15
I'm very picky when it comes to music, even metal and progressive metal. I won't listen to just any band that can crank out a wall of chords to a speed metal beat. There's got to be quality and talent there, good songwriting, and great lyrics. This self-titled album by Vicious Rumors has it all. It's hard, and yet melodic and soaring; punchy and yet graceful. The vocalist's voice is incredible, and so is the songwriting. Unfortunately I can't say the same for their next album, Welcome to the Ball. If you dig high quality metal, grab this CD.

WELCOME TO THE BEST.......2005-09-18
This is one of the best metal records of all time. The writing is superb (both lyrically, and instrumentally). The musicianship is amazing. Carl Albert was without a doubt one of the best metal singers of all time and his performance on this record does not disappoint. Mark McGee and Geoff Thorpe are both great guitar players and their styles melded together as one during this time period. What are you going to say about Larry Howe's drumming... He's a machine! I can't think of a single cut off this album that isn't a "10". From Abandoned, to Strange Behavior, From Raise Your Hands to Savior from Anger one cut better than the last! The only thing better than listening to one of these CD's was seeing this band live, which I had the opportunity to many, many times as I lived in the SF Bay Area through these years. I can't believe this is available again. I horded up multiple copies years ago thinking I would never see this in print again. Digital Dictator, Vicious Rumors, Welcome to the Ball, Plug In Hang On (LIVE), and Word of Mouth are all amazing releases by this highly overlooked, extremely talented band. RIP Carl.
THE GREATEST METAL BAND THAT EVER LIVED!!!.......2005-03-15
I am so psyched that Vicious Rumors albums are now available again. By far the best Metal act in the world. The vocals of the late great Carl Albert are amzing as well as the lead guitarwork of Guitar GOD Mark McGee. I've seen him play with VR, as lead guitarist for ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAMER - Gregg Allman and with others. He is one of the world's greatest players and musicians. Geoff Thorpe still has kept the band going but no replacements can fill the shows of Carl or Mark! If you like serious musicianship and classic metal ala/ Priest/ Sabbath/ Scorpions/ then Vicious Rumors - Welcome to the Ball is a must have. Awesome, awesome, awesome!!!

Another solid Vicious Rumors album.......2006-08-29
Sadistic Symphony is the 2001 release by long running heavy metal band Vicious Rumors. Despite a frequency of lineup changes that would put King Crimson to shame, guitarist Geoff Thorpe and company have been serving up their particular blend of thrash, power and traditional metal for more than 25 years.
Sadistic Symphony isn't the band's best release, but it is still a very solid, hard-hitting heavy metal album. You can always count on Geoff Thorpe to deliver quality metal albums without any attempts to mimic the hot trend of the day, and this is no exception. The album's only weak point is the vocal performance. Morgan Thorn's voice sounds like a cross between Messiah Marcolin (Candlemass) and Mandy Lion (WWIII), and has a jarring quality that actually distracts from the music. The good news is that Helstar's James Rivera is on board for the new VR CD called Warball.
In the end, Sadistic Symphony proves to be a decent Vicious Rumors album, even if it's not one of their best. This is an album that's only going to appeal to the band's die-hard fans though. New fans are better off checking out Welcome to the Ball or the band's self-titled album to get an idea of what the band is all about.
VR Sadistic Symphony.......2001-03-12
Fantastic melodic power metal. Carl is gone (RIP), Morgan has arrived. Very strong vocal work. Musicianship is A1. This album grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go til the last riff is played. LOVE IT!!!!
Surfer.......2001-03-05
Music and arrangements are well done. Jeff is still a fantastic guitar player. Some of the old magic is there. Used to see the old band in the San Francisco Bay Area at clubs. Great music. Heard some of the songs at the Oakland Raiders Games this year and it was there I discovered they had a new album. Well done!
