4 out of 5 stars (3.5 stars) More solid stuff from SFU.......2007-05-03

Seven albums and twelve years into their career, death metallers know what to expect from a new Six Feet Under album. The band's fans like it that way, and if you're reading this, chances are you do, too. You already know what this Tampa-based quartet's seventh record, "Commandment," sounds like...which is exactly why you want to hear it. SFU is doubtlessly one of the most consistent and reliable metal groups around today. They are the AC-DC of death metal: their albums aren't vastly different from one another, and their music is none-too-complex or unique, but it is always completely straightforward (devoid of any kind of experimentation or superfluous fat), and it never fails to rock hard. Very hard.

The songs on Six Feet Under's new full-length, this year's "Commandment," take high levels of concentration to distinguish between, and will sound familiar to anyone that's ever been exposed to the band's back catalogue, because all the typical SFU mainstays are present: simple musical arrangements (including basic, blast beat-free drum beats, and immensely detuned guitar riffs), thick, meaty, often crushing rhythms, and frontman Chris Barnes' famous "angry bear" vocals and grotesque lyrics (all the usual subjects are covered here, especially death, gore, and destruction.) So, the new album won't win Chris and company any new listeners, but they clearly couldn't care less about that (as long as they're able to solidify an already strong fanbase). There are no surprises here whatsoever, so there are also no disappointments. Some may justifiably claim that "Commandment" sounds "safe," "predictable," and "formulaic" -- but it is a tried and true sound, and if it ain't broken, why fix it?

Fans will find much to enjoy on "Commandment." First of all, even though it is not as fast or good as 2005's "13," it does boast a better production job, and is arguably SFU's heaviest offering since 1999's "Maximum Violence." Plus, there's a good, adherent, crunching groove running throughout most of the songs, thus making most of them quite catchy. And finally, the band wrote and recorded the whole record in only twelve days, so the music sounds remarkably raw and urgent. "Commandment" doesn't feature any classics or potential hit singles, but none of these songs are real throwaways, either, and several of them are worth checking out if you have more than a passing interest in death metal. Such recommended listens include the Bolt Thrower-reminiscent "Thou Shall Kill," the steamrolling guitar lead, thumping drums, and catchy, memorable chorus in "Zombie Executioner," the lumbering, machine gun riffs and vocal hooks of "Bled To Death," the positively blistering "Resurrection of the Rotten," "The Evil Eye," which borders on sounding almost like doom metal, and the disc closer, "Ghosts of the Undead," a mid-tempo chug and churner that's highlighted by a fairly long, ripping, and even kind of melodic solo.

The best advice you can receive about this album is not to take it very seriously or over think it. If you take it at face value and don't expect a heck of a lot from it, it should be quite an enjoyable and entertaining listen. In other words, think of "Commandment" as a plate of undercooked meat and potatoes: It definitely doesn't appeal to everyone, so if you want something meticulous, arty, and unique, look elsewhere; but if all you're after is something super quick, easy, raw, and heavy, there is almost nothing that could be more satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Review You Need.......2007-05-01

This album compares closest to True Carnage or Bringer of Blood! The heavy vocals are back, not that worn out, I'm-now-almost-40 sound like the last release, 13 or whatever it was. Don't get me wrong, the age is still there, but at least it sounds like he's trying to be heavy this time. A word of warning though, it definitely isn't early Cannibal Corpse. There's some riff recycling here, but if you're listening to SFU you obviously don't care too much about that in the first place.

I'm giving this review five stars because it's definitely a turn in the right direction for Six Feet Under, but only 10 songs is rather weak. It would have been easy enough to churn out more of this stuff. The cd comes out around 35 minutes, give or take a couple with no song over 4 minutes; a fairly typical death metal album.

If you liked SFU but gave up after 13, try again. You're in for a real treat!

4 out of 5 stars Their best yet...but they're still not great..........2007-04-26

3.5 Stars

Let me state that while I'm a huge Barnes fan (see pre-"Vile" Cannibal Corpse), I never liked anything Six Feet Under did; I thought their music lacked inspiration and direction, and that Barnes' vocals never fit the weak style of the band's music. However, with the production of "13" a couple years ago, the band finally became listenable. It was the first SFU album I'd ever heard that was honestly worth listening to even once. That said, "Commandment" is better (not a huge amount, but more consistent than "13"), and the band has finally produced an album that provides Barnes with what he needs, in my opinion. I still think he's the best death metal (if you want to call SFU "death metal) vocalist around, and this is his best display yet. Therefore, I recommend this album for people who were fans of early CC but turned off by SFU's early, umm...music. You won't listen to it twenty times, but it's worth the money anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Sic Feet Under COMMANDMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-23

Six Feet Under have had ups and downs in their musical direction. After they did the graveyard classics ACDC thing I kind of gave up on them and figured that Chris Barnes was just fading away into redundant lameness. Then they released the album 13 and I was really impressed with the brutality of the songs. Now with Commandment, Six Feet Under prove that they are far from washed up and still have plenty of Deathmetal in them. This album Commandment is in my opinion their best one since Maximum Violence. This new album is exactly what die hard Barnes fans want from him. Sick low growling vocals and thick chunky pure old school DEATH metal riffing. Commandmemnt is an excellent solid Deathmetal release If you like Six Feet Uunder, BUY OR DIE!!!

4 out of 5 stars Fire down under.......2007-01-18

This album started Riot's slight claim to fame and is fantastic. Most definitely worth the buy. Riot remains one of the most overlooked bands of the 1980s best.

4 out of 5 stars Underrated Hard Rocker.......2007-01-17

This hard rocker from Riot has been undeservedly lost in the shuffle. The hot opening track, "Swords and Tequila", possesses irresistible drive and energy. Another prime cut is "Outlaw", with has a good alternating feel shifting from the verse to the chorus and back again. The lead guitar work isn't overwhelming, but that's not the point of the album; almost every track is under 5 minutes, varies in arrangement from one song to the next, and has a solid groove. No 8-minute guitar solos here. The lyrics are better than many others in this genre, as well, but quite tame; if you get off on profanity-laced lyrics you will be disappointed by this one. But the songs really rock, so who cares?

5 out of 5 stars Pre-hair metal masterpiece.......2006-08-10

This was what heavy metal was like before Def Leppard put out Pyromania and Ratt emerged. Heavy, great solos aggression and excellent songs. Once the mainstream caught on, it neutered the aggression and became posing. Listen to this album and you'll understand why metal caught on in the first place. Not a bad cut on the entire album. This album and Restless And Wild (not Balls To The Wall) by Accept show how brilliant early 80s metal can be.

5 out of 5 stars Quality example of early Eighties rock/metal.......2006-08-07

Growing up in the early Eighties and rocking to bands comprising the NWOBHM and the emerging metal scene in the U.S., you'd think that one would be familiar with RIOT. I had never heard of them until two weeks ago when I happened to stumble across a review of them here on Amazon. I'm blown away. I am obsessed with this album. It rocks front to back (with the possible exception of the two bonus tracks at the end - depends on your taste). Definitely one of the top 100 metal albums of all time. They have a sound all their own. In my opinion, the guitar solo during the final two minutes of 'Feel The Same' is the highlight of the album. Anyone obsessed with early Eighties metal, or a fan of good rock guitar solos, should definitely add this masterpiece to their collection. 'Fire Down Under' is solid and will not dissapointe. It's heavy, melodic, and motivating and the musicianship and vocals are first rate. A superb effort from RIOT.

5 out of 5 stars Fire still smokes.......2006-03-02

I first heard this classic back in '81, when it was first released, and it still sounds great today.I agree Riot should have made it big,but anyone with the "High Vaultage" issue knows why they did'nt if you read the liner notes. It definately deserves it's place on Kerrang's top 100 Metal album's of all-time. Is that a mink that appears on their album cover's and does anyone know why they chose it?

5 out of 5 stars Twisted beginings.......2007-01-03

Twisted Sisters first album ranks close to the top only below the ever popular Stay Hungry.

Under the Blade is Raw, and has an edge to it that only came from that era.

As bands progress, their sound suffers and ultimatly falls short in the sales department due to their untimely evolution. Under the Blade is REAL Twisted and it shows.

Twisted is one of a small handful of bands that have really kept the same sound throughout their careers.

Get this CD, enjoy it, and relive the good ol' days of music.

3 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the music, -2 stars for the remastering job........2006-01-26

I was fortunate enough to buy the original Secret Records release on vinyl as an import from Italy back in the 80s and I am so happy that I still have it because I really don't like what was done to this album in the remastering process. All of the raw intensity has been stripped away in favor of way too much reverb on the drums and vocals, ostensibly to "clean up" the sound. UTB was not a clean-sounding album to begin with and that was part of why it succeeded so well. Sadly, this happens with way too many remasters -- reverb effects or drum triggers that did not exist in the original production are added supposedly to modernize the production and, in every case where this is done, it detracts from what made the album so great so many years ago. I don't know if a CD has ever been released with the original mixes of these tunes, so you may have no choice but to hear it only in its remastered form. Fortunately the tunes are great and, if you've never heard what the original mix sounded like, you won't know what you're missing anyway so definitely buy it on the strength of the tunes. Me...I'll stick to my vinyl copy thank you very much.

5 out of 5 stars Stay Hungry pales in comparison to this one!.......2005-09-05

I probably should have said it in my first review, but I'm really a 14 year old kid using my mom's account.

My older sister had the album Stay Hungry when I was little, and I found myself listening to it quite a bit. Last Christmas I got my own copy of it, and this got me interested to see what other music Dee Snider and the gang had come out with. So, I found this album, Under the Blade. The title track caught my interest the first time I listened to the 30-second preview, and once I got my hands on the CD I found "Under the Blade" to be my all-time favorite Twisted Sister song. My other favorites on this album are "Run for your Life", "Bad Boys (of Rock N Roll)", and "Shoot Em Down".

The one and only thing that disappointed me about this album was the sound (or lack thereof) that the snare drum made. Just imagine if that sound was replaced with the roaring snare sound that they had on Love is for Suckers! It's good regardless of the snare, but I think it might have been better if they got a louder sound for when they remastered it. Everything else, I think, is top notch, except for the lyrics that were included. Like I said in my last review for Love is for Suckers, the lyrics are missing lines, have wrong words etc.

Despite these two points, Twisted Sister's debut album made it to the top of my favorites list. I think Under the Blade far outdoes Stay Hungry, even though that was TS's biggest hit.

5 out of 5 stars The Twisted Sister you never knew.......2005-04-12

Under The Blade (1982.) Twisted Sister's first album.

In the eighties, Twisted Sister gained great fame as one of the most famous metal bands of the decade. There were plenty of bands in the genre that decade, but Twisted Sister stood out for a number of reasons - Whether it was the band's awkward fashion sense, singer Dee Snider standing up for free speech in music, or the sheer fact that the group took heavy metal and made it popular with all kinds of audiences, you took notice of the band, love them or hate them. But believe it or not, there was a time when the band was virtually unknown. They had been playing clubs for nearly a decade, and built up somewhat of a following, but didn't have any mainstream popularity. The band debuted in 1982 with Under The Blade. Read on for my review.

I had my doubts about what Twisted Sister's work prior to their days of popularity, and after listening to their debut, I can honestly say I was a fool to have doubts - this early album blows Stay Hungry away (and Stay Hungry is a five-star album in its own right!) The album is considerably more raw than the band's more popular work, but if anything this only makes me like the album more. Many of the tracks have that classic seventies punk rock feel to them, while many of them are straight-up, extremely aggressive hard rockers that are comparable to the heaviest bands of the day. One interesting thing to speak of on this album is the lack of ballads. Most power rock albums featured a power ballad or two, but you're not gonna get any of them on Twisted Sister's debut. Even the most melodic tracks on this album are hard rockers that don't even come close to feeling like ballads. Dee Snider's sheer aggressive nature on this album is unparalleled on any future album the band would release. In the end, this stands as a very raw and edgy album, but if anything, those are strengths.

Sadly, it seems that most of Twisted Sister's albums are now out of print. This is a shame, because Stay Hungry is the only one readily available, and they have albums that are much better - this one included. I hope the record label reissues their albums, but I wouldn't count on it happening anytime soon, sadly enough.

If you're a fan of hard and heavy rock, Twisted Sister's debut album, Under The Blade, is a sheer masterpiece of the genre that must be owned. I can't believe I went so many years without knowing this side of the band even existed! I could kick myself for that. This release is highly recommended if hard and heavy rock is your thing. They don't make rock like this anymore.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome debut.......2004-12-21

I have the original UK vinyl release without "I'll never grow up, now", but I wanted this CD to see the differences and have "I'll never grow up now" on CD.

This is Twisted Sister at it's rawest. The songs are heavy, Dee is constantly angry, there is no ballad anywhere in sight, and the band plays tight. The title track is an awesome nightmare of going in for surgery. I love the part "A monster stands before you now/ His mouth is open wide".

All these songs rock "Destroyer" could be the American answer to Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" and "Bad Boys of Rock n Roll" could even knock Lemmy from Motorhead back a step or two.

America should have been ashamed of itself in the early 80's. The New Wave of British Metal was a great time for music with bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, and Diamond Head hitting the scene. Did America have an answer? Heck yes, it was Twisted Sister. But they had to go to England to make it big and finally came back to copnquer the world with their third album 'Stay Hungry'.

If you want to know where it all began, well I guess you'd have to dig further than this, but if you want to hear Twisted Sister's first official release, this is it. You can play this whole album without hitting the FF>> button once. If you like the early 80's metal before hair and glam turned into a self-parody, then you got to check this album out.

One bit of trivia is that bassist Mark 'The Animal' Mendoza had a heavy and helping hand remixing this.

Six Feet Under's "Warpath" is the weakest of the SFU releases, but it is still worth a couple of listens. The first thing you will notice is the album is more laid back and it grooves, more like newer Entombed albums. It seems that Barnes was trying to create more a "Stoner" Death Metal album, and most of this album falls a bit short, as its just not the same without the harsh lyrics and bone crunching riffs. There are a few noteworthy songs here though, and considering the price of the album (3 bucks used) its worth it. I highly dont reccomend starting here though, I would add this last to your SFU collection. Its not a total disaster, average at best, but at least it didnt go in the direction Metallica went with Load and Re-Load. ENJOY

2 out of 5 stars What happened here?.......2006-05-31

Chris Barnes. Throughout this guys career, he has created controversy. When you think of him, you think of an [...]. With his first band, the infamous Cannibal Corpse, he made a name for himself in the metal scene. How? With Cannibal Corpse, he took over the lyrics and out came the two most controversial albums during that time, 1991's "Butchered At Birth" and 1992's "Tomb Of The Mutilated". After the release of the less-gory "The Bleeding" in 1994, he was kicked out of Cannibal Corpse and formed Six Feet Under. Always outspoken, Barnes has become more of a symbol in my opinion than a death metal singer. One, he is not that good of a growler compared to legends in the genre like, maybe, his replacement for Cannibal Corpse, George Fisher. But, as an outspoken individual, he used Six Feet Under as his cry to legalize marijuana. His gory lyrics were toned down a bit, and he focused more on the pot thing than the gore thing. He is either loved or hated, and most people, included mothers and politicians all over the country, hate this guy.

Allen West. Having the lead guitarist of Obituary in your side project is a big feat. West is a great guitarist, and if you ask anybody they will tell you that Obituary was a great band with some awesome riffs. Throw in a former Death musician and you would think that you have a great band. The only problem was, the riffs were extremely simple in Six Feet Under's first two albums, "Haunted" and "Warpath". Simplicity in death metal is not good. Especially in a crowded genre with so many talented bands. Chris was just worried about making his statement on marijuana, and because of that many Cannibal Corpse fan's (including myself) felt like they wasted money on those two boring first albums. I never tried Six Feet Under again, unless you count hearing some of their newer stuff at a friend's house or wherever. From other reviewers and the metal brethren alike, I hear that it is really not the much different from anything else, and they even did a huge project of covering AC/DC songs. I really don't get it.

Anyway, this album has boring riffs, simple song structure and uninspired solos, and they are not present on many songs. Compared to Cannibal Corpse and Obituary, the two main member's former band's, you wonder what in God's name they are thinking? Maybe stoner metal? Maybe a shot at the mainstream? I really think that they were aiming for the mainstream metal crowd, which makes death metal fans cringe. Something you would expect from Chris Barnes, but not Allen West. In this album, "Warpath", there is only one or two good songs. My favorite being "Caged And Disgraced". Even though the riff is cool, it got old very quickly and it isn't even brutal or anything. This album, and most of Six Feet Under's later albums were just Barnes trying to legalize marijuana. I guess that both of these guys actually forgot that death metal is about the music, not about a point. Even though Barnes did create a fuss with Cannibal Corpse...

If you are looking for blistering guitar solos, lightning fast double-pedal drumming with blast beats and gravity blasts, or extremely intense bass solo's, then Six Feet Under is not for you. Chris Barnes' vocals are not the best, but he at least did better here in Six Feet Under then in the first four Cannibal Corpse CD's. Nontheless, if you want to sit back and smoke a blunt or you are the biggest newbie to the genre, then Six Feet Under is probably for you. Just an extreme disappointment from two legends who formerly made great music with their former bands. This what happens when a death metal band goes mainstream. They forget about the music and go for the point they are trying to make. I give this two stars because there are some good riffs in there, but the song structure is just so boring that you forget it in about a week and are just disappointed that you supported musicians who seem to not take music seriously anymore like they once did very well.

Yeah, it's not as agressive as their other releases but definately worth checking out, it was my first cd that I got from the and I still love it!!

2 out of 5 stars eeeggghhh............2005-04-02

Ok this is the first six feet under cd I ever heard and I liked it when I first heard it so I got it... It was still good but after I got Haunted, Maximum Violence, and True Carnage and went back to this one somehow it lost what was good about it.... If you are EXTREMELY NEW to death metal just try out the cd if you like it get it and expand off it If you dont then try some other bands

3 out of 5 stars hrm.......2004-12-17

Warpath. From the first song, I get the idea that this CD will lead me into a warpath involving gory chaos and bloody bodies flung carelessly left and right, mutilated and degraded in every possible way. Unfortunately, the warpath seems more like a campaign, and that campaign to legalize marijuana.

Well, it's not that bad, I suppose. I just wish Barnes would leave the pot obssession in his personal life and interviews rather than throwing it into death metal songs. I want gore. Not a dreadlocked death metal legend telling me how great weed is and how bad it is that it's not legal.

I really like War is Coming, Nonexistence, Burning Blood, and Revenge of the Zombie on this CD. The rest is just there. Some of it tolerable, some of it not so tolerable. Some of the songs sound an awful lot alike, and I was sad, because this isn't the first Six Feet Under CD I listened to(listened to a lot of Maximum Violence, some of Haunted, bought True Carnage and Bringer of Blood before hearing anything off this but Warpath)and I was disappointed that the songs didn't seem to have as much of a distinct difference between them as I had grown accostumed to from Six Feet Under. They don't sound EXACTLY alike, don't get me wrong. They're just somewhat similar. Which is somewhat boring.

If you're a 6FU fan, definitely get it. If you don't know about it, go ahead and still get it, because it's worth it for the songs that are good, and the ones that aren't great don't rape your ears with badness or anything.

Of course, listen to the clips first to see if you like their style as a lot of death metal elitists don't like it.

4 out of 5 stars Not Exactly Innovative....But Who Cares?.......2007-07-17

SFU's "Maximum Violence" is not exactly ground-breaking music by anyone's standards. As far as death metal goes, it is pretty much the garden vaariety servings that other bands dish up. However, it is brutal, it is low growly, and SFU are good at what they do: garden variety death metal that sounds good.

The title pretty much says it all: violence. If violence isn't your thing, steer clear of this one. For those who are into a good shocker, this is excellent material starting right from the first track. Hacking and slashing soak this CD in musical blood, so to speak.

The music is punchy, with some excellent chords and guitar work. The rhythms worked well, while not being overdone to hell. The vocals are, without doubt, excellent.

Overall, this is a good CD for the death metal fan who just wants some good, simple music to zone out to. Innovative it isn't, but I really didn't mind too much.

4 out of 5 stars The Peak of Their Career.......2006-08-16

I can see how Six Feet Under tends to be a band that is usually ignored by many. Anything released after this album is pretty generic and redundant. However, I really dig the band's first three albums, especially this one, "Maximum Violence".

The thing I like about this album is that it is an album that throws in catchy riffs, basically because Obituary's guitarist is in there. Chris Barnes (you all know what he does) is mediocre for a vocalist. There's worse out there, believe me. The groove on "Feasting of the Blood of the Insane" is pretty catchy if you ask me.

If you want a death metal album with a groove twist to it, I recommend this.

2 out of 5 stars Was a fan, not now.......2006-03-16

I have three of their albums, but I dont listen to them much anymore...I cant stand the vocals and there isnt much thought to the music

DEATH METAL NEEDS AMPLE SOLO WORK!

5 out of 5 stars People like to toss their opinions about as though they are fact........2006-02-04

I think the only fact is that though George Fischer was a great replacement for Chris Barnes, one fact remains...

And this is much the same as Killswitch Engage...

The original Cannibal Corpse was better. The lyrics were better, the music was still the same great Cannibal Corpse. But you ask any CC fan what their favorite song would be, 10 to 1 it came from the day Chris Barnes was in the band doing all the writing.

Another 10 to 1 it's "Hammer Smashed Face."

Either way you look at it, the Cannibal Corpse everyone loves to hate had Barnes in it, they were darker, more disturbing. Now you just have a suitable replacement with a bit more sub-par lyrics that said "Hey look, I can be Chris Barnes, too! :D!"

Oh well, as everyone else in the world agrees, this is by far the greatest SFU you're ever gonna hear. The greatest listening experience begins when you start the cd... "Feasting on the Blood of the Insane," keeps going uphill with "No Warning Shot," and ends with the most killer song (with a crap-load of Cannibal Corpse references) "Hacked to Pieces."

Buy it, you'll love it ;).

PS. The difference between Killswitch and Cannibal Corpse is at least the vocalist is doing the writing, not the bassist. It gets under my skin when all the vocalist does is sing. Oh, another thing, whenever Fischer sings he tries to look scary and all I do is crack up laughing whenever I see it. Barnes can at least pull off an intimidating look without coming across as tacky.

5 out of 5 stars Maximum Brutality.......2005-12-11

In 1996, when he was fired from Cannibal Corpse, Chris Barnes made his side project, Six Feet Under, his full-time responsibility, and three years later, Six Feet Under released "Maximum Violence." I am one of the many SFU fans who think this album is the band's best release, and it rivals most anything done by Cannibal Corpse. Greg Gall pummels away at his drum set, and Barnes unleashes more of his famous, guttural, Cookie Monster bellows and occasional orc-like shrieks (as in "No Warning Shot"), but, unlike some death metal, "Maximum Violence" isn't heavy just because of the vocals. In fact, the guitars usually dominate the maelstrom. Sometimes (i.e. tracks four and nine) the band opts for mid-tempo grinding and churning beats, and "War Machine" almost grooves, with a slow, stop-start rhythm. But, most of the time, guitarist Steve Swanson drives the beats, and stuffs the songs full of skull-crushing, wall shaking riffs. "Bonesaw" is very propulsive, "Victim of the Paranoid" features machine gun, cascading guitar work, and "Brainwashed" is bursting at the seams with Steve's feverish, spiteful riffing. "Maximum Violence" is simply Barnes and Co. at their brutal best, I recommend it to all death metal fans, and if you only get one SFU album, this is definitely the one to get!

5 out of 5 stars My first death metal album!.......2007-03-13

This album was my first death metal album; I found it after whining to some friends that I was getting bored with "regular" metal like Metallica and Pantera. They were like, OK, try this! WOW it was definitely an eye opener. I had never heard someone write a song about ripping out someone's entrails bare-handed. I know now that there is lots of other death metal out there, some of it better than this, but I still like this album a lot. I really like that Chris Barnes did not take the predictable "we love satan" gimmick. To me that's a cheap cop-out. Every other band out there pretends to love satan. I know it's just music, not serious preaching, but still, I don't particularly like hearing satanic stuff, that's what prevented me from buying Slayer's new one "Christ Illusion." Anyway, I bought all of Six Feet Under's albums, and I'll tell you it's great bill-paying music.. when you want to rip someone's head off, writing all those checks, might as well have music going that describes it!

4 out of 5 stars A good solid debut!.......2006-06-26

Haunted is a real back to the basics kind of release. Chris Barnes formally of Cannibal Corpse decided to form another band with a much more simple straight forward kind of sound. This band is Six Feet Under. This was a choice that would forever be controversial for the fans of death metal.

Anyone who is a fan of Cannibal Corpse as I am, would know that they are fast and all over the place in brutality. Six Feet Under lyricly and musically are just as bit as heavy and brutal as Cannibal Corpse. Thanks in part to Chris Barnes. Their style of music however is not nearly is complicated and there is a lot less intricate guitar work. But I have to say it works. The riffs are very catchy and one can just sit there and bang their head to them for the whole album.

One of the albums strongest points is the guitar work of Allen West. West was the guitarist of Obituary (my favorite death metal band). Listening to the album West's guitar work is very prevalent and I definately hear some Obituary in there. Unfortunatly West left after the first album. I believe this hurt the band some because I don't think the guitar work has every been quite as up to par since he left. West is now back with Obituary and all is well.

Another interesting observation about Six Feet Under is that with some of their songs Chris Barnes' vocals a bit more understandable than his prevous works with Corpse. This is fine with me it adds to the simplicity of the band. One of the best things about Six Feet Under is they show the listener that one can be very brutal and heavy in the world of death metal without playing a million notes and pounding the drums like someone who is overdosing on speed. Chris Barnes, dispite some trips and falls continues to deliver and loves what he does so please just give the guy a little break.

Stay Heavy!

4 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars, good. decent.......2006-04-25

I own 4 of Chris Barne's CDs. (Tomb Of The Mutilated, The Bleeding, Haunted, and Alive and Dead). I'd say this CD would be tied for the 2nd best out of all of these. Mostly because of Allen West, and now you can actually hear the f*ckin vocals, before (on CC albums) it was so low pitched i couldnt tell if he was singing or if it was amp feedback.

The bad thing about this album though is that, like every chris barne's cd, sounds very repitive, i've been listening to the cd and its track 6, and it sounds like 1 long song.

None the less, Tomb Of The Mutilated and The Bleeding were good albums.

Tomb Of The Mutilated having about 5 killer songs and 4 repetive songs

and The Bleeding having about 7 killer songs and a couple repetive songs

so anyway

if you want some kickass death metal, get death or obituary and things of that sort

if you want good/decent death metal , then this is for you.

"The HAunted" represents different type death metal comparing to guys like Cannibal Corpse. Chris Barns and Co creates mid tempo groovy and brutal music with well known sadistic elements.
Album features mostly crunchy mid tempo and even slow riffs and few decent guitar solos thrown for the diversity,
Well, turn it up loud in the car, scare the hell out of stuped Burger King drive-thru! HEheheh. Or just listen it before fight, or race.

3 out of 5 stars Six Feet Under - 'Alive And Dead' (Metal Blade) EP.......2005-08-19

Saw the death metal merchants play live here recently.Until a month or so ago,I had sort of forgotten about this band, which of course features former Cannibal Corpse vocalist Chris Barnes.I still run across patrons at metal shows that didn't know that.Only downside about this seven track EP is that it's WAY too short.I mean,25 minutes.Come on!Nonetheless,'Alive...' is still a semi-worthy title.Tunes I liked the most were their head-riveting cover of Judas Priest's "Grinder" and a couple of the live cuts,"Suffering In Ecstasy" and "Beneath A Black Sky".Should appeal to fans of Cannibal Corpse, early Celtic Frost,Nuclear Death,Cradle Of Filth and possibly King Diamond.

3 out of 5 stars A good, small release..........2005-04-26

This E.P. is an example of the silliness of Six Feet Under at it's greatest and at it's worst. A death metal band (other than Death) covering Judas Priest is a pretty silly idea, the live production isn't horrible but could have been a little fuller and the originals reek of "write now think later". This though, was used to promote the band against an increasingly successful Cannibal Corpse whom had found the majority of the benefit sales-wise from the drama resulting from the Barnes split. Barnes wanted to prove the Six Feet Under was here to stay...and this release is enough to hold hardcore Barnes fans over for a moment or two.

The two new songs aren't good nor bad...with "Drowned" being the finer of the two new compositions. The Priest cover of "Grinder" is an absolute joke though and offers little to be examined. The live tracks plod along from "Haunted" solidly enough. The production could have been stronger but hey...it's a bonus E.P. right? The slamming version of "Human Target" cannot be denied. "Suffering in Ecstasy" and Lycanthropy" aren't half bad either. The best material obviously is culled from a previous record so one can't fairly label this release as a songwriting success for the masters of slow-burn death metal.

If you aren't a big fan of Six Feet Under there really isn't any reason to be part of this recording. If you're only a passing fan I might say the same. For people like me who are gluttons for punishment and claim everything Barnes puts to record no matter what - this has a few worthy moments.

Odd...as the following "Warpath" would show the band at their Celtic Frost aping best while the originals on this are simple "there".

Wonders never cease...

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Live Material, So-So New songs.........1999-08-11

First off, let me tell you I love Six Feet Under. I have everything they have ever released and think they are much more talented then most people think. I dislike it when people say they 'rip-off Obituary' I don't see it that way at all. Now, as far as this CD goes, it's a mixed bag. The live material is excellent, great choice of songs, great recording, all perfect. However, of the three new songs, only one is up to snuff, Drowning. The other two, a new 6fu original Insect and a Judas Priest cover of Grinder, are both quite weak. However, it's definitly worth the price, but don't start off with this CD if you are just getting into them. Get Haunted. =)

4 out of 5 stars I have to be honest...I was wrong!.......2007-05-12

I sold my copy of 'Bringer of Blood' a few years ago because I was clearing out my CD collection & after hearing SFU's latest masterpiece 'Commandment,' I started to think about what I had done; so I hopped back on Amazon & listened to the sound samples & they sounded pretty damn good! I instantly went on Ebay & found a real cheap copy & once I got it I realized that I truly liked this album more than I had thought! Yes it's not typical death metal, but damn it's just a rockin' album! It reminded me of SFU's 'Graveyard Classics' which I really enjoyed! Bottom line...if you want a metal album that's just heavy & has a good groove throughout...then 'Bringer of Blood' delivers! Sorry Mr. Barnes, I admit I originally sold this album with haste! Glad to have this back in my collection again!

1 out of 5 stars Chris Barnes, stop this s**t now. PLEASE........2006-08-09

This is embarassing. Because of bands like this and Mortician, people think death metal sucks. Here's some death metal that blows this out of the water:

Cannibal Corpse
Nile
Cryptopsy
Death
Obituary
Deicide
Torture Killer
Children of Bodom
In Flames
Soilwork
Opeth
Scar Symmetry
Atheist
Cynic
Suffocation
Dying Fetus
Morbid Angel
Malevolent Creation
Vader
and more...

Chris Barnes, please stop doing this. You're making a fool of yourself and the whole metal community. Chris Barnes is destroying his reputation while Corpsegrinder is keeping Cannibal Corpse a staple in Death Metal, as well as releasing "Kill", which is one of their best CD's. Onto the CD, Chris Barnes tries to add vibrato to death growling. This doesn't do well. Oh well, I think. Death Metal isn't known for vocals anyway, so maybe this isn't so bad. Wrong. The lyrics sound like they were written by a 3rd grader. It's hard to believe the guitarist is from Obituary, because his playing style is nothing like it was in Obituary. His riffs are generic, and this album only has one solo, which involves him doing an annoying harmonic dive. The bass is unhearable, and the drums sound out of place.

If you want a good Chris Barnes performance, get "The Bleeding" or Torture Killer's new CD(Torture Killer is much better that SFU. Chris Barnes is now dabbling in Swedish Metal.)

1 out of 5 stars Less green, more creativity Barnes!.......2006-08-07

I know I may not be the only one who thinks this, but ever since Chris left Cannibal Corpse, his career has been going through a downward spiral. His music is simple and repetitive, his vocals lame and annoying, and everything is just awful and dull. SFU's only redeeming value is that guitarrist from Obituary, thats it.

I listened to this for five minutes, took it out in disgust, and put in CC's Kill. Instant satisfaction.

5 out of 5 stars Skippy Dippy Doopy Doo.......2006-07-03

I enjoy the musical styling of this band and i intend to continue listening to them. I do not enjoy people writing reviews that tell me what bands i should and should not like. Reviews of that type make me sad. If you like the same kind of music that I like, you should get this cd. If you like the same kind of music that I like, you probably already have this cd.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible horrible excuse for death metal.......2006-06-04

Chris Barnes' voice couldn't sound brutal if his life depended on it. Lyric writing is horrendous...new Metallica has more intelligent lyrics than these guys. I never bought this album, i borrowed it from a friend so i didn't waste my money on this garbage. But anywho, "when skin turns blue"....is there anything to say to that song title? "It's time to die when your skin turns blue. Your skin turned blue when you breathed your last breath" these lyrics have the technicality of a 4th grader's poem. Now face these lyrics with some intelligent lyrics like i don't know umm...DYING FETUS!. Dying Fetus can write awesome lyrics that have insight on politics and religion and how everything is corrupted in modern american society. Okay, i've heard some silly song titles...but "Amerika the Brutal"?!?!?!?! i think Chris Barnes was trying to have a political view in this song, but it failed horribly...and why spell America with a "k" might as well say "amerika teh broootal". Silly. Save 10-15 bucks and don't buy this, go buy "Destroy the Opposition" by Dying Fetus.

5 out of 5 stars you have to understand whats going on.......2007-07-28

This is a stoner death metal album!! this cd is about ripping the bong and listeing to some laid back DM. SFU to me have never really been about being technical they just play what they like..

2 out of 5 stars The well has run dry.......2006-05-14

I've followed SFU from the beginning and felt that each album has gotten a little worse than the prior one, mainly due to lack of originality (don't get me wrong the first 3 albums are great). Now I feel the well has run dry and I don't find the material interesting anymore. The only track I cared for off this album was "One Bullet Left" which features Ice-T (the rapper Jordan's review was referring to, but he doesn't ruin the song as he's got metal cred, remember Body Count??). Chris' vox have gotten especially tiresome over the years.

1 out of 5 stars Why this album sucks........2006-04-20

To start this off (mainly for all the people who listen to SFU), I DO listen to death metal. I enjoy bands like Suffocation, Cryptopsy, and Nile. Listening to the tracks from this album, I can easily say this album sucks.

Okay, what is wrong with Barnes vocals throughout the album? It sounds like he is taking a s*** in the bathroom while you are standing outside. INAUDIBLE. His screeching vocals are also terrible. The rapper in "One Bullet Left" brings this album down too. His lyrics suck horribly and have no variety in it.

Overall, this album is horrible and SFU (IMO) is one of the worst death metal bands ever. If you want to check out Barnes old band Cannibal Corpse; too bad because they suck too. I reccomend this album, any SFU album, or any Cannibal Corpse album to no one. Pick up some true death metal.

5 out of 5 stars Oh... Wow..........2006-02-04

Lots of critical folks on this one. Cd starts with "Impulse to Disembowel" which was pretty cool, then it bursts into "The Day the Dead Walked" which shows Chris's maniacal screech he introduced us to (in a much more subtle, brief manner) on Tombs "Hammer Smashed Face."

It's also got the "One Bullet Left" featuring Ice T, and of course my personal favorite "Sick and Twisted" with the chick from...

...

Crisis... Karyn Crisis... Assuming I spelled everything correctly.

Oh, and "The Murderers" was a killer track too, and I saw them live with Hatebreed, and SFU just rocked it.

Great live band, great cd. Maybe that's why you guys hate this stuff so much. I can think of a number of bands that just sound lousy on cd, but when you see them live...

It changes everything.

1 out of 5 stars true garbage .......2005-10-29

Six Feet Under are back with probably there worst release yet! not much of there releases have impressed me much, but this takes the cake as the worst SFU album yet. Chris Barnes vocals are interesting to say the least, in Cannibal Corpse they were incredible! they had low and high range perfectly! and with each release a new intensity, with Six Feet Under, he sounds like a water buffalo. It's tolerable, but it sure isn't like his Cannibal Corpse days. Mostly all of the tracks on Maximum Carnage are major cheese! with embarrassing cuts like One Bullet Left and Sick and Twisted. If anyone is going to ruin Death Metal it will be Chris Barnes, luckily he isn't doing that great of a job. As we haven't seen any SFU videos on MTV yet. I see a bad future for SFU as a band, and with releases like this it's no wonder why. They should of named this True Garbage instead! cause thats what it is ... garbage.

4 out of 5 stars Sounding darker again..........2007-04-29

I must admit that I skipped out on this release a few years ago because the samples I heard on this one didn't thrill me (except for 1 at the time) but after hearing 'Commandment' which I liked a lot, I decided to buy this & finally give it a listen & I admit it was much better than I expected. Yes, SFU has done better work than this, but '13' is one of their better albums since 'Maximum Violence' (1999.) I would have said this album was one of their best since 'True Carnage,' but I always felt that album was another 'Maximum Violence' but not as good. If I had to describe this CD, I would say it is a heavy mix of the three previous releases. Definitely give this CD a try if you're a big SFU fan.

4 out of 5 stars Stellar SFU420 release.......2007-03-29

I like this as much as Bringer of Blood. The sound is a little different. You have to turn it up louder than the rest of your CD's because it plays quieter...I don't know what is up with that. Check out 'Deathklaat', my fave on this album. Good classic SFU420 lovin' in heaping spoonfulls of decaying brain matter ladled generously onto your plate. Dig in!

The songs on this cd are awesome, that is if you like Six Feet Under. However the production isnt the greatest esp. considering warpath.

4 out of 5 stars Pure death metal.......2006-06-30

This album is in your face the entire way through. Decomposition of the Human Race begins with an ominous sound and soon picks speed and never lets up. As much as I like Chris Barnes, the production on this album wasn't very good in some places. I had trouble hearing the vocals over the music in some songs. But that is a very small downside to the album. Overall, the music was face-melting and the vocals were done as only Chris Barnes can do them (just plain SICK!). Enjoy, metalheads!

1 out of 5 stars Ghastly, unoriginal album created with no energy or passion........2006-05-21

You really have to wonder why these guys keep going. I mean sure, they have a fair few fans out there that dig their work, but honestly, there's nothing creative or original about Six Feet Under. They just keep bringing out highly improvised, completely uninteresting slabs of death metal that rehash a thousand other albums without any sort of enthusiasm or passion. It's not that they couldn't play something interesting if they wanted to. After all, the members belonged to bands such as Death, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse and Massacre. Surely they've been creating death metal long enough to be bored with the mere basics.

But that's what you get with Six Feet Under and in particular their latest album "13". 11 tracks of very standard death metal that contain boring, uninspired vocals, the simplest riffs, the most straight forward drumming possible etc. I really tried to approach this output with open ears in an attempt to see exactly what Six Feet Under have to offer, but I just can't find anything.

This is the sort of album you would expect from a newly formed death metal act releasing their debut album. Even then, I think I would see it as only mildly promising and not worthy of your attention. As it's the 9th album of this band, and they show no signs of moving forward (or sideways), I class this is woefully irrelevant.

I won't waste any more of my time or yours. If we all avoid their albums, maybe they'll start trying!
