Album Description
Alternative country rock with a touch of folk and blues. Bob Dylan picks up John Prine over in Nashville, and they go down to Austin to meet up with Buddy Holly and Jimmy Dale. They stay up all night 'til they get the words right.

This fabulous collection of roots music evokes the scratchy noodlings of Elmer "Icy Patch" Price, when he was recording Oklahoma war whoops with his brother Bud. To borrow from the Price Bros. songbook, "Whatta mean is," I can't stop playing it.

HINDU EQUATIONS ADD UP TO A MASTERPIECE.......2002-06-27
Howard Iceberg's most recent album is his best. Alt. country fans will note that the bass player is none other than Mike Ireland. Howard is one of the great obscure rock and rollers and it's too bad, he deserves to be better known. His lyrics are up there with the best, Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, you name them. His voice is a cracked Dylanesque drawl but it's very expressive. He combines the lyrical poetry of Dylan and the sardonic humor of Mark Twain with the rock and roll heart of Buddy Holly. The title track is one of the great lost summer singles with Howard's witty lyrics and 12-string jangle from his long-time guitarist Gary Paredes. There are also country weepers and rockabilly rave-ups amongst the gems on this album. His music is the kind that stays in your head long after you hear the album--how often does that happen these days? His other releases are worth seeking out also. "Short Songs for Temporary People", his previous release, is available in England. All in all a great Midwestern classic album that must be heard.

We just can't get enough of this year's best surprise. It's rootin' tootin' roots music, as refreshing as an icy glass of schnapps in the freezing drizzle.

Boston's best-kept secret.......2004-03-04
You've never heard the Titanics, have you? That's probably because blistering three-chord songs with titles like "Man's Inhumanity to Man" and "Drag You Down To My Level" weren't likely to be big the year Pearl Jam hit, and even college kids who've since learned to embrace the Ramones' blitzkrieg bop still can't wrap their minds around something like "Sitting on the Right Side of Satan." Oh well, it's their loss. The Titanics are funny, loud, and too withering in their irony NOT to follow a song called "I'm Going Out of My Way To Be Nice To You" with one called "You're Just Not Good Enough." Undaunted by the public's complete lack of indifference to this little gem, members of the Titanics joined some ex-Lyres and resurfaced as the Upper Crust. And surely, my good sir, you've heard of those masters of rocque and roll?

One shy of a dozen country numbers that range from the deliverately expressive Stained Glass Window to the searing, overdriven guitar-infused pleading of Take Off Your Mask. Iceberg is the singer-songwriter here and his style reminds me of a young Tom Petty (with Country influences left intact, of course). The ensemble assembled to provide the musical fire does just that aptly dubbed some of Kansas City's finest. And Iceberg's humor is sure-witted, often pointed and played with a been there sort of smile. Recommended.

A Good CD, But Could Be Better.......2002-02-22
All in all this is a good cd. Although, the Reubke and Liszt pieces could have been played a bit faster. I'm sure that in the room this recording was made the reverb was somewhat lengthy, but that doesn't translate into the recording. And the result is unnecessary slowness at times (one might even say droning), especially during the Reubke.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT BUT GREAT.......2000-07-09
Joel and the boys are just something you have to hear to understand. A graduate of Moorhead State University I had the pleasure to hear them work just about every week.
The music on this CD will amaze and astonish everyone that takes the time to listen to it.
Fantastic music!!!.......1999-10-14
I have had this CD for a couple of years now, and I just never stop listening to it! This is some of the best funky blues I've ever heard. Joel, Toby & the guys really rip it up on some classic tunes. The vocals are incredible as is the guitar, not to mention the horns--Kudos guys! If anyone ever has the chance to see this band live, I highly recommend it-what an exuberating experience.

This album combines fantastic R&B blend with some catchy blues riffs. A Very upbeat album that I would highly recommend to everyone! They have guest appearances by Paul Schafer and Tom "Bones" Malone. This band also incorporates a fantastic horn section to add fullness to the sound! A GREAT ALBUM!!!
