A diverse cast of characters helped create this impressive, four-years-in-the-works solo debut from legendary Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi. The vintage ultra-heavy Sabbath musicality gives the disc a cohesiveness despite the variety of voices and lyrics penned by 10 different singers. Skin (of Skunk Anansie) has a lovely, precise delivery that contrasts with the dirgelike feel of "Meat," while Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl turns in a performance that mixes the Foos, Nine Inch Nails, and Sabbath on "Goodbye Lament." Ian Astbury's dramatic vocals on "Flame On" are especially suited to the material, which in this case sounds like Danzig. Also perfect for the portentous vibe is Billy Idol, whose sensual snarl and trademark "yow!" on "Into the Night" is a highlight, despite lame lyrics. A few singers miss the mark: Type O Negative's Peter Steele's deep bass out-Goths the material and Henry Rollins sounds silly. But Iommi's stellar strategic solos (at times they achieve a Jimmy Page-like mysticism) and retro Sabbath stylings make Iommi a must-listen for old-school metal mongers. Black light posters optional. --Katherine Turman

Album Description

Black Sabbath-the Black Sabbath, the original lineup of Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward, four childhood friends from the north of England-grew out of the U.K's late-60s blues/hard rock scene, which also included Led Zeppelin, Cream, Blue Cheer, and other greats. Sabbath's sweeping and masterful metamorphosis away from that tradition spawned heavy metal music, inventing the template for everything that would follow. With crushing rhythms, torpedo riffs, haunting songs, and Ozzy's other-worldly vocals, the band conjured a dark, menacing, and resonant sound that reverberates still.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction........2007-07-26

This is a great introduction to the greatest metal band of all time. But thats all it is , only an introduction . If you are a newcomer to Sabbath and not sure if you really want to spend the money on all their cd's , then this is for you. If you are already a Sabbath fan and you want a greatest hits, then go for the 2cd "Symptom Of The Universe" or better yet , save up your pennies until you can afford the 8cd box set .

2 out of 5 stars Buy a different Black Sabbath Complilation.......2007-07-04

For some reason on this best of album they decided to shorten the song Iron Man. Iron Man is a great song and deserves to be heard in its complete form. Who ever was in charge of putting this cd together has just lost themselves a huge amount of sales buy editing one of Sabbath's most well known songs.

I recommend this album
We Sold Our Soul for Rock 'n' Roll

2 out of 5 stars love ozzy and sabbath..........2007-06-09

but c'mon why did they edit iron man? did they run out of space (only reasonable answer) but why iron man. why not war pigs, (love that song but
has a VERY long instramental part)and that why i rate 2 stars. could have had
5 stars but sabbath, you f%$#ed up REAL bad. :(

3 out of 5 stars Good but unneccessary!.......2007-04-30

Greatest Hits 1970-1978 is a single disc overview of Ozzy Osbourne's years in Black Sabbath. While it is full of Sabbath classics like Paranoid, Sweat Leaf, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and War Pigs, there is really no need for this complation to exist! First of all the double disc set Symptom of the Universe is available. Secondly there is already a single disc Sabbath complation out there "We Sold Our Soul for Rock n Roll", which I would recommend over Greatest Hits 1970-1978 if you are only wanting a single cd instead of the two disc Symptom of the Universe.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-04-01

I got this for Christmas last year and loved it. I still do. It has some of the best Sabbath songs on there, but I only have two real questions:
1. Why is Iron Man edited? It's still good, but come on.
2.Where's Johnny Blae? Fairies Wear Boots?

Apart from those, this is a near-perfect CD. It also has a little pamphlet thingy, that talks about the history of Black Sabbath. All in all, great.

4 out of 5 stars Iommi - The Lost Album From 1996.......2007-05-21

Tony Iommi, of course, is one of the founding members of Black Sabbath and one of the original heavy metal guitar gods. The recordings on this disc were actually done back in 1996 when Iommi and former Deep Purple vocalist / bassist Glenn Hughes got together to record an album that unfortunately was never released. Finally in 2004 Sanctuary records put these recordings out and they are indeed a worthwhile release. Hughes and Iommi had previously worked together under the Black Sabbath moniker for the "7th Star" album and the tracks here have been available for years under the bootleg title "8th Star". I have never heard the boot versions, but apparently things have been cleaned up, additional drums recorded, along with a few other tweaks to the material. Overall this is a very nice hard rock disc. Iommi and Hugh's musical styles are very different, but they blend together here to make a unique combination of Iommi's heavy down low guitar style, and Hughes more upbeat funk / soul approach. I would think that fans of either of these two legendary artists would enjoy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD - Iommi Hughes at their Best!.......2007-03-30

Great CD with Glenn Hughes singing with a very bluesy, soulful style reminiscent of Paul Rodgers (Bad Company). In fact, if you listen closely you will hear some very clear signature vocal stunts and riffs that are Rodger originals - which is great - cuz Paul is certainly also one of the best. Iommi, what can you say, he doesn't take an album "off" - this is no exception. All tracks are strong and memorable. Iommi is starting his Dio / Heaven & Hell tour as of this date; but what about a Hughes / Iommi tour - perhaps in smaller venues? I don't know if they could fill arenas under Iommi/Hughes, but "wow" wouldn't it be great to see these guys in smaller clubs. I guess I'm dreaming. I suppose if you are going to run around the globe putting on shows, you might as well make as much money as possible while doing it. So, we can dream.

5 out of 5 stars YES. BUY IT........2007-01-05

I've heard from other people who had the 1996 DEP bootlegs that these tracks were out of this world. Now that I've bought the CD, I can say, yes, they are.

Buy this album. Please encourage Iommi and Hughes to continue working together.

This disc is heavy and loaded for bear. "Gone" leads off the action - I loved Hughes' version of it on his R.O.C.K. CD, and this version is just as good as his. "I'm Not the Same Man" has to be my favorite of a great lot on this CD. Hughes' vocals are strong and Iommi's in top form. It's great heavy rock. No, it's not Black Sabbath, but not everything Iommi does has to be Black Sabbath. If you like a real singer in front of your metal and already bought everything Dio made, get this album.

3 out of 5 stars Good songs w/ lousy drumming.......2006-12-08

I have the "Eighth Star" bootleg version of this album and I really like it. When I found it was going to be officially released, I jumped at the chance to purchase it and waited anxiously for it. Boy, was I disappointed. The drum tracks, originally recorded by Dave Holland, were rerecorded by Jimmy Copley and they really do not fit in with the tracks as well. They also left off one of my favorite tracks: "Shakin' My Wings". Maybe it's just me being used to the boot, but I prefer the boot overall.

2 out of 5 stars Toni Iommi - 'The 1996 Dep Sessions' (Sanctuary) 2 1/2 stars.......2006-08-25

Wasn't even aware of this title, nor the other couple of releases the Black Sabbath guitarist had available. After checking this CD out,I can only tell you it's more melodic hard rock than anything else. Some may call it 'commercial' hard rock.Only tracks that did anything for me were "From Another World","Don't Drag The River" and maybe "Time Is The Healer".Appears this CD's nine(9) tunes were penned anwhere between 1996-2004.Honestly think that completists would likely get more out of this disc than I did.Line-up:Tony Iommi-guitar,Glenn Hughes-bass&vocals,Don Airey-keyboards and Jim Copley-drums.

Album Description

Tony Iommi unleashes his fiercest solo outing yet with the aid of legendary vocalist Glenn Hughes (Black Sabbath, Deep Purple). FUSED combines classic blues rock vocal stylings with the famous metallic crunch of Iommi's signature Gibson SG guitar - the guitar sound that has come to define heavy metal.

Joining Iommi on Fused is former Deep Purple vocalist/bass guitarist Glenn Hughes and former John Mellencamp drummer Kenny Aronoff, who has also played sessions with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, Lynyrd Skynyrd and countless others. Fused was produced by Bob Marlette, who also manned the studio boards for 'Iommi.'

Iommi and Hughes tend to write quickly when they settle in. Once the basic song ideas were written for this new album, Hughes worked on overall melodies and lyrics. The songs were in place, but a drummer was needed to tie it all together. Iommi was eager to work with Aronoff again and had him in mind from the beginning. The highly respected skins-basher was thrilled about the invitation, especially when Iommi said he wanted to tour to promote Fused.

These new songs most definitely work, and they rage with the same fire and intensity that mark Iommi's best. There is nothing quite like the sound of a power trio, because there can be no weak links -- each musician's efforts stand out. There is no place to hide. Iommi, Hughes and Aronoff feed off each other, whether it's the concise punch of "Dopamine" and "What You're Living For" or the fluid twists and turns in the nine-minute epic "I Go Insane."

Iommi's lethal guitar crunch leads the charge. Hughes truly pushes himself to the edge and adjusts his voice to fit the overall direction of each song while simultaneously propelling the rhythm with his pounding bass guitar. The volcanic thunder Aronoff unleashes from his drums sounds like nothing he has done before. Marlette's sparkling, crisp production results in a hard-hitting, modern, in-your-face sound.

Iommi's excitement about Fused is at a fever pitch and he cannot wait to tour with Hughes and Aronoff.

5 out of 5 stars Iommi and Hughes = Rules.......2006-06-11

This is a very solid release. Songs like Dopamine, Wasted again, Grace, What you're living for and the epic I go insane are are among the best Iommi and Hughes have done. Hughes singing are strong and emotional. Iommi delivers some heavy riffs and cool guitar solos. Buy this CD you won't regret it.

2 out of 5 stars Bummer.......2006-06-03

After listening to Glenn's 'Soul Mover', I guess this is what i should have expected. just an absolute bore! Ok now that thats out of the way, let me rant- when the hell is some veteran
musicans gonna put out something that just fking jams. Because it sure as fk aint Metalica. It aint mp3s's or pirating thats keeping good bands away, there just aint any pulling all the stops, and i'm too fking old the take this roll, so if you come come across a great band ,suport the hell out of them.

1 out of 5 stars tony please don't go on this way ..........2006-06-01

Uninspired, monotonous and no surprises at all. Let's get some things straight first. I'm a guitarist and Tony's always been one of my biggest influences. From the first Sabbath record up to the Seventh Star album this guy's playing impressed me more than anything. He had the riffs, the melodies, the rhythm changes and the sound no one else had. And what do I hear on this record ? None of all that. Even Glenn sounds bored and singing in his "Midlands" dialect seems to accentuate this feeling. The chemistry between two of rock's finest artists just doesn't work on this album. The magic was already fading on the previous Iommi solo album but now it's definitely gone.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed, again. Makes me sad!.......2006-06-01

I have been a die-hard Tony Iommi supporter for decades. When Ozzy left, I supported Iommi. When Dio left, I supported Iommi. I followed Sabbath, and still listen to my Sabbath cd's. But the three Iommi cd's that I have purchased, including this one, FUSED, have all disappointed me. In this case, it's more about Glenn Hughes, whose voice I find annoying on this effort.

I would love to have seen Iommi team up with someone like David Lee Roth, or when Rob Halford was still roaming solo. Tony needs a GREAT vocalist, and he comes out strong. Tony is a great performer, love his riffs, but they are drowned out by the annoying Glenn Hughes on this album. Heck, even someone like Joe Lynn Turner would have been an improvement on Glenn Hughes. Isn't Vince Neil looking for a job these days?

Ug, so yeah, this album is ONLY for the die hard Tony Iommi and/or Glenn Hughes fan. Otherwise, by an older Sabbath album.

2 out of 5 stars A decent Iommi effort destroyed by Glenn Hughes .......2006-05-28

Not one of Tony's best efforts, but there are moments worth the price of admission. But it's hard to get over Glenn Hughes's vocals. Just horrible stuff. Where did this guy come from, and what was Tony thinking?

3 out of 5 stars There is something missing here.......2006-10-31

I really want to love this cd. Maybe that's what is making it so hard for me to accept it. There is just too much of the nu metal sound going on here for someone who loves classic rock as much as I do. Please, give me some classic Sabbath or Deep Purple or Zep to help me forget what's going on here.

Tony Iommi is the master of heavy guitar. I'm impressed that he is willing to check out different types of music but I wish he could have given us a little more of what he does best...

And it ain't nu metal!!

1 out of 5 stars 1.5 stars- Pretty awful and forgettable recording.......2006-04-10

Are all of you previous reviewers crazy or something? Have you been fans since the early 70's of Tony? He's putting out this new metal stuff with some horrible singers, with the exception of Ian Astbury and Ozzy, and even their tunes are horrible swill!!! That Billy Corgan number had me praying to God for it to end!!!! That crappy song was over 8 minutes!!!! To think that the godfather of metal would put out such utter rubbish with todays piece of cr#p singers is quite unfathomable. Like I said, about the only respectable singers on here were Ian and Ozzy. There really weren't any good riffs like a few of the smart previous reviewers said. I know that a lot of reviewers didn't like the Black Sabbath cd called FORBIDDEN, but it's a masterpiece compared to this nu-metal crud. I just bought the two cds 96'Dep Sessions and Fused, but haven't got around to listening to them yet, but from what I've heard, he's back to making more respectable music with them. I guess if you're fans of these vocalists this album would be more enjoyable for you, but not to me because I'm from the old school of metal, and shame on you guys who are in your forties and up, for liking these young goobers who wouldn't know metal if it hit them upside the head. Also, Billy Idol isn't one of the youngsters, but completely sucks nonetheless. Of all the work that Tony's done over the years, this one you should definitely stay away from, if you've got some integrity.

5 out of 5 stars Superb album.......2006-02-16

This is a great effort by Iommi but it should have been released under the Sabbath banner since the sound is pure vintage Sabbath. I love how Tony added a whole bunch of different singers. The sales were probably dissapointing because Iommi is not a household name like Sabbath is. The track with Ozzy & Ward is fantastic. Flame is good and heavy. Even Billy Idol's track is strong and respectable. This recording really should have been a monster hit, not sure what the heck happened. If you love Black Sabbath you need to get this CD, it's a Sabbath face lift. The artwork is lame, just like the art in Dehumanizer and Forbidden.

4 out of 5 stars Why wasn't this album huge?.......2005-08-22

I am more of a greatest-hits Sabbath fan rather than a total Sabbath freak but I have a healthy admiration for Mr. Iommi's guitar skills and was mildly interested when this all-star-guest-singer (ala Santana) solo album was released.

I can't say that I love every song here but I was really blown away by the contributions from Henry Rollins, Dave Grohl and Billy Corgan and the Ozzy, Ian Astbury, Billy Idol contributions are plenty of fun too.

These songs are super-heavy but also very catchy and to my ears fit right into the hard rock / neo metal radio format of the time (that played plenty of Sabbath / Ozzy). I could never understand why this record wasn't huge, why was Goodbye Lament not a rock radio single? Oh well, I advise you to buy this used ASAP and crank it up.

5 out of 5 stars Iommi is the Riff master!!.......2005-06-24

Can any other guitarist is history write riff's that stick in your head like Mr Iommi?, probably not!! Well here's another helping of Iommi material that has different singers, yet still has that Iommi sound and vibe. All of the vocalist sound great, even Billy Corgan is alright on here with his whiney assed voice. In some ways, Ozzy himself may be the worst singer on this cd which is kind of funny when you think about it.

Mr. Iommi is a God in the metal world and is regarded as a pioneer of heavy metal music. All of this of course is correct!! This cd rocks from start to finish and is well worth the plastic it's printed on. I love it!!

Buy it and support one of metal music's founding fathers.

In 1969 they entered the recording studio to cut their first album. The breakthrough came later that year with Paranoid, a pioneering heavy metal offering. The album was toured extensively throughout Europe, and it was during this tour that Black Sabbath appeared on the German TV show Beat Club (similar to the UK's Old Grey Whistle Test) and recorded four songs live, including, bizarrely, a cover version of 'Blue Suede Shoes'. The recordings were released on a Beat Club video in the US, but this is the first time the tracks have been released on CD-Rom format.
