Corrosion of Conformity finally hit on the perfect lineup after a decade of shuffling members and knock out a bone crushing, yet astutely intelligent and passionate album. Wiseblood sounds not unlike its predecessor, Deliverance, with southern rock leanings and crushing Black Sabbathy riffs, but it's more methodical and deliberate and less adrenaline-hyped overload. The band lets the songs stretch out and breathe, allowing the listener to fully soak in the big rock vibe, without having it furiously hammered home. --Adem Tepedelen

5 out of 5 stars Wiseblood is a Wise Choice!.......2007-07-28

This album was my introduction to CoC. Wow! Not at all what I expected with the somewhat overblown bandname. I imagined a cliched speed metal band, but what I got instead was a different style of metal, one that appeals to me greatly. Wikipedia refers to CoC as "Southern Metal." That phrase is perfect. Imagine if Metallica could morph into Lynyrd Skynyrd and Black Sabbath. Yeah, it's that good, and this album is on permanent rotation in my car stereo. With Southernesque hard rockers like "The Door" and "Long Whip/Big America," my windows stay down and my volume cranked up. Listeners will also enjoy the thrash metal ditty "Fuel" and a homage to early Sabbath entitled "The Snake Has No Head." This is a must-have!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-06-10

This is probably one of the best Rock/Metallish albums of the 1990's. Pepper Keenan's vocals are at their best, the guitar work nails both the Sabbathesque riffage and the slower atmospheric stuff, and the music is an all-around immersive experience. From the moderately paced "King of the Rotten," to the slower "Goodbye Windows," to the head-banging "Man or Ash," this album has a great range, but never seems to be reaching or disjointed. If you like hard rock or sabbath style metal, you definitely have to have this album.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Riff Fuelled Metal.......2006-10-14

Corrosion of Conformity established themselves as a metal act after the crossover album "Blind" and the all-out bluesy stoner approach of "Deliverance", both excellent albums in their own right. "Wiseblood" saw COC continuing the riff filled approach that touches on stoner metal. With Pepper Keenan (of metal supergroup Down) behind the lead guitar and vocals, you know the album will deliver to those who want big infectious riffs and catchy melodies, aspects "Wiseblood" takes at ease.

Kicking things off with the frantic riffing of King of the Rotten, the album is launched into gear, and the relatively fast and catchy approach is continued through the opening few tracks, highlighted by crowd favorite Long Whip. Other examples of the adrenaline pumped COC include the aggressive fist-pumping The Door, wielding lyrics of `while you're losing it on the curve / right, there's the door' to add to the confrontational flavour. And also the aptly named Fuel which contains some thundering riffs and even moments of double bass kicks.

"Wiseblood" also portrays COC's bent for moody, melancholic ballads in the sad Goodbye Windows, with lyrics of a disappointed mother telling her son `he should have known better'. And also the chilling Redemption City which demonstrates Keenan's excellent ability to craft a moody ballad, especially in the sumptuous acoustic passage in which he sings `your soul is tired and you want to go home'. These are typical COC ballads, recalling the likes of the flooring Pearls Before Swine from the album "Deliverance".

Overall this is solid riff fuelled metal, and will certainly please fans of the post "Blind" COC, and probably fans of general rock music who enjoy a good melody and riff.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome..........2006-01-04

I listened to "In the Arms of God" and enjoyed it to a rather large extent. It was an awesome CD. I decided to go back to thier earlier CDs to see how well they panned out and Wiseblood is amazing. There are songs that just rock hard and there are songs that just amaze. I have to say one amazingly stand out track is "Redemption City". This is a great rock CD that would suck to miss out on. Go buy it now!!!

Well, I thought I could read some reviews about this album...must have been mistaken. First of all, let me say that I AM NOT WRITING A REVIEW FOR WISEBLOOD. Many of the other "reviews" say very little about the music. Rather, they seem to bash some other band when trying to promote a song on this album. I don't really care to hear that this band is better than "The Biggest Band In the World" (someonse else's words, not mine-read the other reviews) because they chose a different musical direction (if you haven't read the other mindless reviews, I'm referring to Metallica). True, I am a HUGE Metallica fan (all they're albums; I'm not a "NEW" or "OLD" fan), however, I cannot see that there is any value in reviews that merely seem to bash other bands, including those other than Metallica.

I just wanted to remind everyone that you should be reviewing the album, good or bad, but since there are clips of the songs available, I'm not sure there is even a need for "reviews" since most of them seem to be useless, as with this one for Wiseblood. From the clips, this album seems to kick some tail, so I might just take a chance and check it out someday. Thanks. (Stepping down off the soapbox now.)

King Swamp appears to have rushed back to record their follow up 2nd album which was a disappointment to many. Although "One Step Over The Line" is a great song (and reason alone to buy this CD), the rest of the album is just not up to par with their first album. Fans never got the chance to see a third album unless you consider Walter Wray's solo effort the third album (which I do and it is great!).

5 out of 5 stars Thirwell and Mossiman Strike An Indelible Chord.......2004-09-02

Thirwell ,AKA Clint Ruin, had for many years on his FOETUS related projects projected a wild enthusiasm for music and lyrics. The development of his unique sound made an incredible peak on "NAIL" and I feel this WISEBLOOD release with Mossiman from SWANS takes that sound to the next level- something I thought not possible. Mossiman really brings a great influence to this CD. These two really made some great music together. If you like FOETUS and you have not heard this, I strongly recommend you check it out!

5 out of 5 stars Not your everyday Foetus.......2004-04-12

I don't consider Wiseblood another Foetus project. Roli Mossiman (Swans) and Jim Thirlwell (Foetus) created a beast straight out of the swamps. Industrial beats with hot licks, power chords, and vocals that owe much to lounge and heroin slack.

This also has the Stumbo 12" and Motorslug 12" mixes tacked on.

Indespensible if you like Industrial before Ministry's Land of Rape and Honey.

5 out of 5 stars internal paradoxl anger.......1999-06-09

Stumbo is the cornerstone to the industrial movement, it captures the complexity, anger humor and intorspective analysis of its day. It defines a neuronal synaptic impulse of intense magnitude and must, most definatly must be played very very loud! I recomend listening to the entire CD with a friend in an old Dodge Dart at 3am.

4 out of 5 stars Hard to find and worth the work,.......1999-06-08

Enjoy Minstry and the Buttholes? This ia a must have. Stumbo is worth the buy.

5 out of 5 stars FUNNY AS HELL.......1998-09-12

This is one of feotus's best. Unique funky slammin goofy sick and dark. It's really too bad feotus never got with the hip hop program, he really could have schooled some heads.

Modern goth gets it all wrong.

Any fan of rob zombie hellbilly delux should check this cd out and see what the real thing sounds like.

if you like this cd, check out bug tapping the conversation for the some new school stumbo.

The other wiseblood isn't as good but it's got one track thats so slammin that its worth 10 or 15 bucks just to own it. for real.

4 out of 5 stars J.G. Thirwell (Clint Ruin) at his Best.......2004-12-25

J.G. Thirwell has always had a way with orchestration of what could be called some of the most elaborate musical pieces that the "alternative" scenes have ever had privilege to hear. As always some of his more experimental works are a bit hard on the ears. But the first two tracks on this 4 track CD are well into his best works. Reminiscent of one of his masterpieces "Slung" from his Gash album under the "Band" name Foetus, "Pedal to the Metal" and "Stop Trying to Tie Me" could only be described as "Industrial Jazz". The last two tracks are too "experimental" for my tastes and thus the 4 star rating rather than the full 5. Well worth whatever price you are forced to pay for this out of production CD.

4 out of 5 stars Car wreck, bent horns.......2004-06-05

Let's get two things straight: [1] J.G. Thirlwell is either a god or a demon (I'm not sure which, even after years of listening to his music), and [2] He works really well with Roli Mosimann. A decent set of 4 songs totaling ~25 minutes, it's Thirwell's usual blenderizing of musical styles, but with Mosimann's contribution providing a somewhat different flavor than straight up Foetus. Outrageous brass on tracks 1 & 4. Classic twisted genius. Wonder just who influenced them? (Lucifer and who else?)

4 out of 5 stars Hey. Fist Review. Where's my prize?.......2001-07-17

As with Dirtdish, I can normally only listen to some of the tracks. Petal to the Metal and Hey Bop a Ree Bop are my two favorite. They really kick butt. The other two songs just kinda hurt my ears and make me nervous. Although, when I've got enough Stoli in me, I will listen to them as well. Loud. What must the neighbors think?
