Customer Reviews:
One of my ALL TIME favorite albums.......2007-05-02
This album is not only a SuperGroup effort of the best kind, but a masterclass in instrumental music. Take Funkadelic alums Bernie Worrell and Bootsy Collins, add Primus drummer Brain and sprinkle the mad genius of renegade guitar god Buckethead, and bake it in the Bill Laswell Low-End Bake Oven, and you've got a ThrashJazzFunkMetalScratch masterpiece, almost good enough for the whole family.
This album has most certainly withstood the test of time--I've owned my copy since just a few months after its release, and it has remained a mainstay of my personal rotation. There is a great sense of play and humor in juxtapositions of "Blast," a brief but numbing thrash assault, to "War Machine Dub," a slow-as-HELL bassy barrage. The jam-funk of "Animal Behavior," the only song on here with any vocals to speak of, is a centerpiece of this band's efforts and a fun tune, but these guys also give you tracks like "The Interworld and the New Innocence" just to show you that they are also master musicians who can put together a song like nobody else's business, songs that use music to move you through an experience as satisfying as any ingenius little turn of phrase or neat rhyme. Other incarnations of Praxis have included Laswell himself coming to the fore on bass, or John Zorn on alto, or Yamatsuka Eye pelting out some gutteral screams, but this version is the most flawless one, free of defect, and creating what should be (if there is truly any justice in the universe) one of the seminal albums of the late 20th century--music that does not fit easily into any one genre but actively plays with them all, mixing them together into an incredible whole that reminds us that music is a pure form, existing outside of schools of thought and mere labels, and that it is transcendent of this world into a spiritual plane. Just swing along with this one, and it will take you to new heights.
One of the greatest CDs of all time.......2007-03-27
This is like a modern version of Stravinsky. You will either be amazed or repulsed by it. The music is dense, challenging, confusing, beautiful, funky, dark and dangerous, often hitting all of those adjectives within the course of two minutes. There are more twists and turns on this disk than San Francisco's Lombard street. Not for the musically faint of heart. This is the CD that made Buckethead a superstar. A must own for fans of guitar heroics. And great way to clear the room when you want to get rid of the Pop-Tarts and Frat Rock lovers crowding your space.
So Eclectic.......2007-02-07
This album i feel cannot be classified, though many people disagree. It just has a lot of different types of music all rolled into one beautifully crafted album, especially considering Laswell was involved. I can't get enough of Bootsy and "Animal Behavior", and the scratching work of AN AMF, i never thought i'd even like that type of stuff, but its great, and The Interworld and the New Innocence is a highlight of this album. If you love avant garde music, I highly recommend this Praxis masterpiece.
1992.......2006-07-10
One my top album from 90's. This is true first Funk music recorded on digital, I think. hey brain, what do you think about ?
Badass.......2005-02-12
This album was one of my first introductions to Buckethead. I distinctly remember listening to this and questioning everything else that I listened to, and you'll probably do the same. Buckethead seems to get most of the attention in the reviews here but really everyone featured on Transmutation is at the top of their game. If you're a fan of any of the five musicians on here (and Bill Laswell too) this is a must-have. In fact there's enough genres covered on here to satisfy almost anyone. Chaos IS never-ending as the liner notes say, and this is one chaotic masterpiece you'll be begging not to end.

bestial.......2006-09-30
malignancy is everything you want to hear in a death band, blast speed, downtuned instruments, insane vocals and lyrics. the first time i heard malignancy was live on wnyu's hellhole, and i was fully quenched by their intencity, ther're definetly underated, but then again some music was made to stay in the dark.
Extreme shiit.......2006-07-28
This band is a favorite of mine besides devourment, mortician, and condemmed... Cross species transmutation is malignancy's latest album & it is brutal as hell.
If you cant handle brutality ? Dont even bother..........2006-07-24
If your thing isn't brutality insted melodic music ? Go somewhere else. Malignancy plays music that is brutal and realy realy loud and truly fast with one talented drummer Mike. Cross species transmutation is pure sick and not for people that enjoy melodic dm such as softie bands like opeth, dark tranquility, daylight dies, children of bodom,archenemy... God cant stand those guitar solor... Anyways, worth in your collection.
more of the same brutality.......2006-02-19
Just like the other Malignancy albums, this one is very heavy and killer. i have 3 Malignancy albums and they all crush, you cannot go wrong with an album by this new york band of death metal monsters.
AND i want to tell you about another Malignancy album you need to find AT ALL COST'. a 'split' album Malignancy did in 2002 with a Czech. Death Metal band. The album is - INTERVALLE BIZZARE / MALIGNANCY "Frailty of the Human Condition" on SHINDY PROCUCTIONS. it is the most brutal death metal crush you will ever hear.
Cryptopsy meets morbid angel..........2005-08-29
This band is truly an work of art...Their music is intelligent, original, great production and great vocals. Malignancy's "cross species transmutation" is the perfect gore.

super duper!.......2003-09-11
Not sure what this cat had to do with the "New Age" but his music is powerful stuff, evoking passions I didn't know lurked down there!
Great performances, too.......2003-09-03
While the other reviews on this album praise Rudhyar's music, I find too little discussion on the merits of this particular recording. This disc represents an excellent selection of some of Rudhyar's most mature work, written in the last decade of his life. Advent was completed in 1976, while Crisis and Overcoming was completed in 1978. Both are performed by the Kronos Quartet, which is at the peak of its game in this recording--very precise and lyrical, but not too dry. The label invested great resources in ensuring the recording quality was high, and I believe they succeeded--the sound is very consistent, sweet for a quartet recording, and not lumpy. Transmutation, completed in 1976, is also well performed and recorded.
Music from another world.......2000-08-29
Dane Rudhyar was undoubtedly one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century. A true 'renaissance man', he is best known for his pioneering work in astrology - which the vast majority of astrologers have still to catch up with. His whole life revolved around the concept of cylcicity. A most appropriate concept for Music - vibration - measured in cycles per second! He was also a writer, painter, poet, composer, etc. Some of his music has been recorded and, for the most part, existed on remote record labels. He wrote two books on music: Rebirth of Hindu Music & The Magic of Tone and the Art of Music. Two deeply insightful books. In this latter book, Rudhyar goes deeply into the issues of various forms of music in the 20th century and also embraces the most primitive beginnings of music alongside the musical philosophy of ancient cultures from ages past and also includes ideas concerning the future of music. However, its one thing to read his ideas but quite another to HEAR them! Although, through his pioneering works on astrology, Rudhyar might be associated with the 'New Age' movement, this is by no means the usual 'escapist' New Age music. There's no way you can put this on 'in the background' as some sort of accompaniment to various activities - whilst you wash up or whatever! It requires total commitment and a kind of surrender to the magic of Living Tones. Rudhyar spoke of his music as containing a certain psychic potency - and that's what you get. Stirring music - raising questions and challenging our consciousness. Asking us to visit unfrequented areas of our whole being. This is difficult music - even as Rudhyar's style of prose isn't easy-reading - yet rewarding. This is music embodying a deep inner ecstatic union with the divine fire of the One Self - the Atman. Rudhyar was a Theosophist in his time and just as Blavatsky's Secret Doctrine doesn't 'popularise' the ancient wisdom teachings so, too, Rudhyar's music is not for the faint-hearted but for those brave enough to explore every region of themselves - the so-called light and dark realms. If you're looking for airy-fairy 'love and light' and 'feel good' music then don't buy this CD - it's for those fearless and intrepid travellers of such deep inner journeys as arise from Jungian psychology or the Psychosynthesis of Assagioli and an excellent accompaniment to passing through any one of those great initiatory Trials of Life that each of us must face sooner or later along our long journey of unfoldment, growth and expansion. Strong medicine - but it comes highly recommended; as one that comes up with the goods. And there's not much that you can say that about in our media-frenzied age, is there?
Rudhyar practically invented the New Age............1999-07-24
As a seeker, astrologer & philosopher, Dane Rudhyar practically invented the New Age. But his compositions bear no resemblance to the wallpaper music New Agers use to take snoozes disguised as meditation. Rudhyar composed to be listened to with complete attentiveness. His music can be dissonant, but it is not a dissonance of anger. Like Charles Ives, he was mining for sound in a place where words were inadequate. Eventually, astrology received Rudhyar's full attention, but he left this music behind to demonstrate other possibilities.

I AGREE!!!!.......2006-04-11
Bucket, Bootsy, George and B. Laswell can outdo the rest. Don't settle for superficial solutions right now. The stars give you the ability to go deep when you're plumbing for answers. If your instincts are telling you that all is not as it seems, listen to them for Praxis is no Joke nor are the talents of thunder bass of Bootsy, Graham Central Station, Ronkat, Stanley Clarke, George Bro. Johnson. It's a "Transmutation & Funkcronomicon Axiom Funk cd." Demand straight answers rather than hiding your head in the sand. You know that you need the cold, hard facts, but remaining blissfully ignorant will just result in more (and easily avoidable) problems.

Not enough integration.......2000-04-14
While this cd has some great moments, I think the "concept" of this band is a little too disjointed. The musicians who make up this incarnation of PRAXIS are Bill Laswell on bass, Buckethead on guitar, Brain on drums, and dj's DXT and The Invisible Scratch Pickels.
What I think this band lacks is any sort of integration of the styles they use. Throughout this cd it's basically this.... for 3 minutes it's the Pickles and the band is basically an underground hip-hop band. Then the Pickles more-or-less quit playing and Buckethead, Brain, and Laswell take over and then the band is a shred-funk band for a few minutes. Then DXT plays some ambient space stuff for a minute. And on and on and on... Had Buckethead, Laswell, and the Pickles ever had a 10 minute section where they all improvised together as an ensemble it most likely would have been the 10 best minutes of the entire cd. That would have been a brand new sound, a new type of entity, but as it is, they are dub for 5 minutes, shred for 5 minutes, ambient for 2 minutes, etc...
Like I said, there are some truly great moments seperately by everyone involved (Buckethead in particular has some beautiful playing) and I don't regret buying this cd, but I think as a band, the group sound would have been much more unique had they tried to integrate all these seperate musical genre's into something whole and "new".
The liner notes would make you think this is the most original music of the last 20 years, but it's actually rather cut-and-paste sounding overall.

a ton of music!.......2001-11-20
Since there is no cd information here, I'd like to give a description & track listing. This is a double cd - one cd is live, the other is a best of. Transmutation is the 'best of' and features 13 songs from Lydia Lunch's best albums: Honeymoon In Red, Shotgun Wedding, Stinkfist, and more. Along with Lunch are many of her famous friends and longtime collaborators such as: Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Clint Ruin (also known as Foetus), Die Haut, Rowland S Howard from These Immortal Souls, Shockheaded Peters, and more.
The first cd also features a postcard of the famous 'Transmutation' digital photo montage by artis JK Potter.
The second cd is a live recording (the packaging claims it is 'Live in Siberia' - who knows?). It features 10 songs.
