Album Description
Jimmy Page and Robert Plant changed the face of rock 'n' roll as cofounders of Led Zeppelin. The massively influential group disbanded in 1980 following drummer John Bonham's death, and Page & Plant pursued solo careers before reuniting in 1994 for MTV's hugely popular Unplugged. That historic session-which led to an international nad new studio album-became New Quarter. Page's guitar virtuosity and Plant's vocal mastery are potent as ever as they deliver thse inspired, reinvented, takes on choice picks from the Led Zeppelin songbook.
Customer Reviews:
Terrible song selection .......2007-07-09
In addition to the terrible song selection, they manage to ruin the 14 minute version of Kashmir. This CD is nothing more than a showcase for Plant's grandstanding which doesn't hold up without the full Zeppelin sound. Page's playing is so subdued that the guitar could be that of any decent session guitarist.
Many of the titles on this CD was old Led Zepplin songs, but the sound is much better on this CD........2007-06-27
This CD is almost a remaster of some of Led Zepplins songs and were done very well, especially Kashir and The Battle of Evermore.
Just As I Remembered It.......2007-06-09
If you loved this CD when it first came out, who can remember the year anymore, must have been in the early 90s, you'll love it again now that you finally remembered the name of it. I couldn't locate it in any of my local record stores or Best Buy, so I was happy to find it on Amazon. Brought back memories of seeing Page/Plant in concert. I like this version of Gallows Pole much better than the one on the box set, which I also purchased.
Page & Plant - Classics!.......2007-03-13
I recently purchased 'Unledded' as well as the London Symphonic Orchestra's 'Kashmir' - no collection would be complete with out these Classics!
Journey on the Orient Express.......2007-02-14
Led Zeppelin always loved to experiment with Oriental motifs and now here is Page and Plant with an Egyptian Ensemble, Musicians in Marrakech and the London Metropolitan Orchestra. While the music may seem over-orchestrated at times, it is rich in musical themes, foreign and familiar, building on their classic numbers to a stunning climax on Kashmir. Najima Akhtar hits the high notes Robert Plant no longer can, lending a more lilting feel to The Battle of Evermore, but Plant doesn't disappoint, nor for that matter does Page on this wonderful album. My only question is why John Paul Jones wasn't invited in on this set?

THE TRIUMPHANT RETURN OF JIMMY PAGE & ROBERT PLANT........2007-02-07
My fellow readers and reviewers, I will be writing a review on the legendary historic album entitled "NO QUARTER" UNLEDDED by one of Rock's most beloved artists and one of England's most favorite sons. I give you two of the fearsome foursome that are formally of the legendary band, LED ZEPPELIN, MR. JIMMY PAGE and MR. ROBERT PLANT. "NO QUARTER" UNLEDDED was originally released in 1994 on Compact Disc on the Atlantic Records label in association with a Time Warner Company. There are two different versions of this legendary album but I will only be reviewing the original 1994 version. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artists, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
LED ZEPPELIN will forever remain in our hearts as the ultimate Rock n' Roll royalty band to be compared with such great legendary bands as THE BEATLES, THE ROLLING STONES, THE KINKS, THE WHO, PINK FLOYD, AEROSMITH, JIMI HENDRIX, QUEEN and BLACK SABBATH. For myself, it was extremely painful to review the "IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR" album and tell it like it was. The LED ZEPPELIN saga was so tragic in the end that it was a horrible way to end the MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN. Please note that the 1994 historic reunion of JIMMY PAGE & ROBERT PLANT is a celebration of LED ZEPPELIN'S music and not a LED ZEPPELIN reunion. When I mentioned at the end of my review of "IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR" that the LED ZEPPELIN legend does not end here, if anything it is only the beginning, I was not kidding. JIMMY PAGE'S & ROBERT PLANT'S UNLEDDED "NO QUARTER" is the result of the continuing adventures and tales in the life of the LED ZEPPELIN legend and saga. If there were ever two major forces of LED ZEPPELIN that did not like the way their band ended in 1980 and were destined to reunite with the intentions of wanting to set the record straight once and for all, it would have to be JIMMY PAGE & ROBERT PLANT. When JIMMY PAGE & ROBERT PLANT recruited Charlie Jones on bass and Michael Lee on drums, a new band would be born in the image offspring of the MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN. Only this time, their music would have and contain a more Indian type style sound than before. In my opinion, "NO QUARTER" UNLEDDED is a true testament and a fine tribute to a great band that was indeed, ahead of their time.
I will list and briefly review certain song tracks in their original exact running order as follows: (1.) "Nobody's Fault But Mine," (This is a completely different acoustic rendition of the original 1976 LED ZEPPELIN classic Rocker. This is really a well recorded song. This acoustic number can make sounds echo off the beautiful sounds of the waters flowing down the streamy hills of the mountain side. Jimmy plays his acoustic guitar like raindrops falling on the petals of rose leaves floating above the water. Robert can make his husky lead vocals ricochet off of Jimmy's acoustic guitar and blow with the wind through the high grasses of the land.) (2.) "Thank You," (This is another well recorded Rocker that pays a wonderful tribute to the MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN. Jimmy plays this Rocker just like he did back in 1969. Jimmy does not play guitar like he once did but he is extremely effective in this Rocker. Robert does not sing the high notes like he once did either but he is extremely effective in this Rocker as well. Drummer Michael Lee plays a blistering drum kit similar to that of one John Henry Bonham. His drumming is what makes this Rocker sound the way this Rocker once sounded like in the past. Believe it or not, Michael actually makes Jimmy and Robert sound even better than anticipated.) (3.) "No Quarter," (This is another blistering acoustic rendition of the 1973 LED ZEPPELIN classic slow Rocker. Jimmy plays a mean twelve-string acoustic in the mountain hillsides that have the beautiful sound of the waters flowing down stream. Robert not only makes his blistering husky powerful lead vocals ricochet off of Jimmy's twelve-string acoustic guitar, but off of the hills and mountains where the sounds lie and vibrate with the flowing waters. This is one hell of a song.) (4.) "Friends," (This is another wonderful tribute to LED ZEPPELIN. This song is a well recorded rendition of the 1970 LED ZEPPELIN classic song. Jimmy plays his twelve-string acoustic like no one has ever played a twelve-string acoustic. Jimmy NEVER lets off during this number. Robert sings this song perfectly especially since this number is played in the right key that would suit his new mature husky vocal ranges.) (7.) "Since I've been Loving You," (This is another wonderful tribute to the MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN. During this slow Blues Rocker, Jimmy plays his Gibson Les Paul electric guitar like the way he used to in the past. However, it is evident that Jimmy does have some struggles in playing his guitar solo. There are stories circulating that Jimmy would now be required in receiving Cortisone injections before a gig. I do not know for fact if this is true or not. If anyone knows, please comment this review and let me know. Robert sings this slow Blues Rocker like the Robert Plant of the past. Robert really lets loose during this number. This song would also be played in a different key to suit Robert's new mature husky vocal ranges.) (8.) "The Battle Of Evermore," (This is another beautifully well recorded acoustic number that requires the sounds and mixtures of the mandolin and the Indian sound. Najma Akhtar lends her beautiful falsetto lead vocals along with Robert's well adjusted mature husky lead vocals. Jimmy plays a mean twelve-string acoustic during this number.) (9.) "Wonderful One," (This is a new beautiful acoustic number that would be added to the MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN legend. This song is dedicated to Robert's late son Karac Plant who died of a virus during the 1977 World Tour. Robert sings this song with such raw power, skilled grace and emotion that you can't help but feel this song along with him. Jimmy backs up Robert with a beautifully superb twelve-string acoustic guitar performance.) (10.) "That's The Way," (This is another wonderful tribute to LED ZEPPELIN. This is an acoustic rendition of the 1970 LED ZEPPELIN classic acoustic original song. Jimmy plays his twelve-string acoustic guitar during this number exactly like the way he performed it back in the 1970's. Robert also sings this number with the same energy and emotion like he sang it in the 1970's. However, this song is played in a different key to suit Robert's new husky mature vocal ranges.) (11.) "Gallows Pole," (This is another great tribute to the MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN. This is a blistering acoustic Rocker rendition of the 1970 LED ZEPPELIN original classic acoustic Rocker. Jimmy plays his twelve-string acoustic guitar with such skill and ease, that he actually makes it look easy despite being difficult. Robert sings this slow Rocker like the way he used to in the past. Again, this slow acoustic Rocker develops more extreme power and energy with the perfect timing and powerhouse drumming of Michael Lee. If you close your eyes, you can almost feel the spirit of John Henry Bonham flowing through Michael Lee's drumming.) (12.) "Four Sticks" (This is another wonderful tribute to the MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN. This is a great Rocker rendition of the original classic 1971 LED ZEPPELIN Rocker. This Rocker is the real Rock stuff that is made of pure legend. Legend has it that John Bonham played this Rocker with four extra heavy drum sticks. (Two in each hand) Jimmy plays his twelve-string acoustic guitar like it will be his last time. Robert sings this acoustic Rocker in a different key to suit his new mature husky vocal ranges. Michael plays the role of Bonham perfectly in playing his drum kit with four sticks.) and (13.) "Kashmir." (This is the most wonderfully perfect tribute that anyone can ever pay to the MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN. This is a beautiful Rockin' rendition version of the original classic 1975 LED ZEPPELIN song. Jimmy plays a new Gibson Les Paul for this Rocker. Jimmy does not let up or disappoint anyone during the playing of this Rocker. In my opinion, this is the best "Kashmir" ever recorded or performed live. Jimmy plays a mean six-string for this rocker like there is no tomorrow. Robert sings this song with such power and emotion that he gives a whole new feeling for this new Rocker. Again, Michael Lee adds more power and energy to this new Rocker with his perfect timing and his blistering powerhouse drumming. Lee would give this new Rocker new life that would have made Bonham proud. The violin solo is nothing short of breathtaking. The ending of "Kashmir" would add new pages in the LED ZEPPELIN saga and legend. If you close your eyes, you can almost feel the presence and spirit of LED ZEPPELIN performing one more time. You have to hear it to believe it.) I would like to add a honorable mention to this album that is only included in the new 2004 version. The song is "The Rain Song." (This is another wonderful tribute to the MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN. This new acoustic number is a rendition of the 1973 LED ZEPPELIN classic acoustic song. This song sounds so beautiful thanks to Jimmy's beautiful playing of his twelve-string acoustic guitar. The background orchestra compliments Jimmy's acoustic guitar playing wonderfully and perfectly. Robert sings this number perfectly. Michael Lee backs up both Jimmy and Robert with his perfect timing and drumming.) Of the songs I did not list or review, believe me when I tell you that these songs are well performed as well. Overall, this is a wonderful tribute and true testament of what could have been had Bonham lived and LED ZEPPELIN were still together playing great Rock n' Roll music.
I would like to encourage everyone to purchase this legendary album. You are not just purchasing any album, but a priceless piece of Rock n' Roll history. I feel that not just every LED ZEPPELIN fan, but everyone in general should own this legendary album as part of their own valuable personal music collection. This legendary album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, with this legendary album UNLEDDED "NO QUARTER," there are now new pages and chapter's of the LED ZEPPELIN saga and legend. At last, JIMMY PAGE & ROBERT PLANT have finally made peace with themselves concerning a great foursome band named LED ZEPPELIN. Now you can say that the LED ZEPPELIN saga and legend ended on a better note and not the way the band ended in 1980. With that in mind, in reality, the LED ZEPPELIN legend is well secure and will never be forgotten. JIMMY PAGE & ROBERT PLANT have accomplished and achieved so much in Rock n' Roll history that they both do not have anything left to prove. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? So here's to you Robert and Jimmy. I hope this review did you justice. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. Keep On Rockin'. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. LED ZEPPELIN FOREVER. R.I.P. John Henry Bonham. R.I.P. LED ZEPPELIN. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
in a new light .......2005-11-22
robert plant and jimmy page unledded no quarter cd with a great backing band featuring african instruments and a eastern favour to many led zeppelin classics this album is needed in any zeppelin fans collection just for the version of kashmir classic
robert's voice may sound a bit croaky he still rocks and page hasn't lost his talent both playing with their full alblities
i love this cd a new light to led zeppelin songs and you thought robert plant and jimmy page would never play together again
well they did and it was superb
Means vocal is not a quarter?.......2005-10-11
At the beginning I was worried, what if Page's guitar or Plant's voice dissapoints me.
However it was not necessary. Although the first number "Nobody's Fault But Mine" slightly confuses me, but the sound was getting better and better
Most of numbers originally from Zeppelin are all my favorites, Five of them are from the 3rd album, I am very glad that as a 3rd album lover.
"Gallows Pole" and "Four Sticks" were even better than the original. I didn't feel it was nice the string section in "Since I've Been Loving You".
Anyway overall, this album has good balance of the sound. Zeppelin was a great band but also I was feeling the balance of the sound was unusual as a Rock Band. Usually the vocalist is a leading part in the rock band, but in Zeppelin each member is so great that Plant's vocal sounded like just one of them. Sometimes as if a back chorus. I always wondered it should be called great features or weakness of them.
But here, Plant acts as a leading roll and Page's guitar supports him.
So "No Quarter" means the vocalist is not a quarter here?
A chance to see Plant and Page together again .......2004-10-29
After Live Aid, the Atlantic Records birthday concert, and some other live brief appearances, I was excited to see this effort during the "unplugged" era....I was hoping Plant and Page would tour and tour they did. For fans who were not old enough to see Led Zep in concert, this had to be the closest I would ever get. Although I saw the Firm and solo shows by Plant, and only recently did Plant start to go back to Led Zep tunes, nothing compared to the Plant/Page tour that followed the release of this cd. Fine selection of songs fit real well with all of the backing musicians.
Page and Plant together again!.......2004-09-18
In 1994 Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Robert Plant got together again.Since Zeppelin had broken up in 1980 after John Bonham passed away, fans were ready for some form of Zeppelin, although they had played a few shows together in the 80's,for example Live Aid in 1985 with Phil Collins playing the drums. While not as good as it would be to have the three surviving members of Led Zeppelin reunite No Quarter should satisfy many fans who are wanting Zeppelin again.Unledded contains 13 songs performed live at various shows in the U.K. While the set doesn't contain that many of the songs that pop into your head when you think of Led Zeppelin Unledded is a very good album. All of the songs sound good they way they are performed here.If you love Zeppelin buy this CD.

William Bolcom is my kind of musician. He writes music that is sometimes adventurous but always based in a recognizable American idiom. And he's a terrific ragtime pianist, the best Joplin player I've heard. With these credentials, of course he's a wonderful Gershwin player. These are the best piano performances of Gershwin I know. After you hear those, Bolcom joins his wife Joan Morris for very flavorful versions of 10 George and Ira Gershwin songs. The whole disc is a delight, and the original analog recordings still sound fine. Highly recommended to all Gershwin lovers. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Peculiar.......2005-01-26
I can see how someone might enjoy this album. William Bolcom is a top-flight pianist and the idea of playing the tunes as George Gershwin played them at parties is intriguing.
Because my ear is used to it, I guess, I would like to have heard longer performances of fewer songs. Each one sounded to me like a snippet -- over too soon. Because of that, plus the fact that I'm not a fan of Joan Morris' showy voice, I give the album one thumb up.
Gershwin Never Sounded Better!.......2002-06-25
This is a fantastic CD! Back in the 70's, pianist William Bolcom and his singer wife Joan Morris made a delightful series of albums on the Nonesuch label of old songs from the first half of the twentieth century - just glorious voice backed by brilliant piano. As Ira Gershwin might say - who could ask for anything more? The music is not only beautifully performed, you can hear the joy of the performance in every note. And Bolcom and Morris were never better than when doing Gershwin.
A combination of two albums, the first part of this CD is all piano. The Gershwin Songbook consists of brief (some under a minute) versions of some of his more popular songs in the way that Gershwin himself famously played them at parties. They demonstrate that Gershwin was as gifted a pianist as he was a composer. The other instrumental tracks are some of Gershwin's solo piano pieces, including the wonderful Rialto Ripples, a rag written when he was just seventeen. For me, the pinnacle of both Gershwin's and William Bolcom's artistry is reached on the second of the three preludes - a classic study of a bluesy mood.
Just when you think things can't get any better, Joan Morris arrives. She effortlessly sings and swings her way through ten of Gershwin's best songs from the cheeky comedy of By Strauss to the smoky moodiness of Someone To Watch Over Me. Maybe I'm just an incurable old romantic, but the ballads are the best of all.
No Gershwin collection can be complete without this CD. Now if only I could find a copy of that Bolcom/Morris song about Humphrey Bogart...

Soothing sounds of Led Zeppelin..........2005-03-01
Before I write my review, I thought you would like to know that I have not had a chance to listen to "Kashmir: The Symphonic Led Zeppelin". Keep that in mind if you are trying to decide between the two.
I think I would consider myself an average Led Zeppelin fan. I appreciate their music, and I listen to them every so often. I'm not one of the hardcore Zeppelin fans, so you might not appreciate this tribute as much as I do. I would have to say that this tribute is very well done, and a lot of time and effort was put into making it. The strings are pretty much in sync with the original songs, and just a few seconds into the song, you'll be able to tell what it is. I'm not going to go through a list of songs and tell you what I think of them, but I will say that I think the best one is "Ten Years Gone." This album - or albums, I should say - are great if you're looking for a soothing and relaxing version of some of the great Led Zeppelin songs. Though, I must say that you will only appreciate the tribute if you know the songs themselves, because if you don't then the song just might get repetetive. I'm a fan of the whole String Quartet Tribute thing, and I'd have to say that this is one of the best ones I've heard so far.
Not my cup of tea.......2003-11-18
For some reason this CD just sounded really corney to me. I was really dissapointed. Your opinion may differ but I would recommend that if you are looking for a classical Zeppelin CD you get Kashmir instead. It is cheaper and shines a new light on some awsome songs rather than butchering them.
Finally, Led Zeppelin Done Well in Strings........2003-02-20
A few of the selections are questionable for arrangment for a string section. I mean, Whole Lotta Love? Dazed and Confused? Give me a break. They could have replaced those poor choices with a number of other possibilities.
Nevertheless, it is the first attempt of it's kind, and the songs that are suitable are gorgeously performed.
Led Zeppelin's gifts for creating melodies and knowledge of music theory become more obvious in these classical performances.
It's a double CD so it has lots of songs!

Bravo Maestro.......2007-01-03
I consider myself fortunate to have found this gem. I have always admired Casals not only for his extraordinary musicianship but also for his political courage. The story of Prades is heart warming and the music is a rare treasure. If you are a Casals fan, you might also want to hear Casals conducting Beethoven's 7th Symphony...a masterpiece.
They don't make 'em like this any more..........2006-11-28
The quality of the MUSIC here is remarkable. Many of the world's elite classical artists of the post-World War II generation are here - and the result is magic! A few of the highlights for me are the Mozart Piano Quartet No. 2 (disc 1), Beethoven Cello Sonata in A Major (disc 10), Mozart Oboe Quartet (disc 7), and many more...
You might wonder, however, how these live 50's recordings compare to recordings made in the digital era? Well... in a word, very good, very good indeed considering. Occasionally there is audience coughing (primarily just during the breaks between sections) - after all this was recorded live and you can also sometimes hear music pages turning on the stage if you listen closely. However, the sound is about as full range as you could ask for and the hiss and noise levels are very acceptable and not ever intrusive - I did note that the string instruments generally sound very good while the piano does not always fair quite as well, sometimes sounding slightly boxy - the piano is just far more difficult to record in any live setting because it is more dependent upon the room acoustics. Still, overall, the restoration is very good and trust me, you will become engaged in the MUSIC very quickly and forget all about any limitations of the recordings.
To summarize, as other reviewers have also noted, the sound quality, while not perfect by digital standards, is indeed very good - the important thing is to be assured that sound quality considerations never get in the way of the fantastic, wonderful performances. They really don't make music like this anymore.... well maybe they do sometimes, but not on thirteen discs in a row! Of course, I'm now going to purchase the second box set.
Treasure!.......2003-06-19
When I first heard this set, I thought to myself: now I know how Howard Carter felt when he looked for the first time into Tutankhamen's newly-excavated tomb. Maybe you know the story: As his colleagues broke the seal on the long-undiscovered tomb's final door, Carter peered into a completely dark treasure room, illuminated fitfully by the beam of his flashlight. Someone asked, "What do you see?" and he answered, "Wonderful things!" Well, this set of Casals & Friends performances from early 1950s Prades Festivals also offers an unbelievable wealth of long-unheard, wonderful things. It is impossible to overpraise this production, or find the words to adequately thank Music and Arts for issuing such extravagance in these days of penny-pinching from what we used to call the major record companies. Thirteen (!) CDs of live performances, most featuring Pablo Casals working with front-rank collaborators, and all worth hearing many times over. Highlights? Casals, Rudolf Serkin, Alfred Cortot and Eugene Istomin survey all the Beethoven cello sonatas; Casals and Menuhin treat us to all the Brahms trios; the great, lamented William Kapell plays glorious Mozart and Beethoven with a young Arthur Grumiaux; the Vegh Quartet offer marvelous Schumann ..... and many, many more. Yes, you learn that even Willy Kapell could smudge a note now and then when performing 'live.' But, overall, the mistakes are few, and the musical insights so numerous as to defy listing. Note that these performances are completely different from those other, "official" live Prades recordings issued by Sony/Columbia/CBS over the past 30 years, so if you own the Sony CDs (and you should!), rest assured that while there is some overlap of repertory, you will not be duplicating performances. (On the other hand, 9 of the 13 discs were previously issued a few years back by Music and Arts.) Sound quality is mono and variable, but never less than completely acceptable. In fact, the sound quality (as realized by ace M&A engineer Maggi Payne) is surprisingly good considering that many of the performances apparently originated in the naves of ancient stone churches, not exactly a recording engineer's dream soundstage! Packaging is spartan, but well-designed and attractive: paper envelopes contain the CDs which are held together in a space-efficient soft box. Full liner notes helpfully discuss the origins of the Prades Festivals, and provide a limited discussion of participating artists other than Casals. (The fabulous Kapell performances -- of music he recorded nowhere else -- represent the pianist's only appearance at Prades, just a month or two before his tragic death in a plane crash.) Final word: In this set you get some of the greatest performing artists of all time playing some of the greatest chamber music ever written ..... and for an unbelievably low price. Unless you are completely averse to live music-making or have no tolerance at all for fallible sound, you need to own and hear these discs, over and over again!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent performer.......2007-03-09
This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
I'm fascinating.
A unique project.......2006-11-23
Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.
Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12
First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.
Definative.......2005-07-23
Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!
Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

Very spiffy........2005-09-26
Oh man... I like this cd! I got it for "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise;" that song is absolutely adorable. I love French, and some of the songs are in French (some in English). Nice sound, a handful of good songs, and I do enjoy his voice! What a fox, that Georges Guetary, I tell you what... (yes, I am as cool as I sound).
Ma Belle Marguerite/Guetary.......2005-08-29
Delightful, intimate, charming. Includes the actual dubbing tracks for his songs from "An American In Paris," including the vocal from the outstanding Folies-style number, "I'll Build A Stairway To Paradise." Was there ever a more stylish song and dance man, than the Georges Guetary we see in that movie scene?
Interestingly, in his duet with Gene Kelly, "'S Wonderful," Mr. Kelly seems strangely threatened or desperately competitive with the ineffable Mr. Guetary. I was as shocked as Mr. Kelly to find someone more charming than he.
Most of the songs are in French (I think it's French!) but this does not hamper my enjoyment of the disc.

Customer Reviews:
Now I know why they make jokes about Hoboken (see below).......2005-10-27
Man, it's discouraging to see people piddling all over music like this. 1950-65 was a great era for American culture; sure the European influence was lingering but American composers (and artists and filmmakers) were finding a voice, an expression of some quality uniquely American that had never appeared before. American music could be something other than Hoe-Downs, Charlestons, and Nearer my God to Thee (sorry, Charles, and you know I love you anyway). This was a taut and crisp intellectual America that was finally gaining ascendancy, something new to the world, brilliant and beautiful. I think of a wonderful photo of Elliott Carter with Stravinsky in New York at some gallery or concert hall circa 1960 or so. Stravinsky looks old and seedy, like a Russian refugee even though he had years to ditch that; Carter, alert and in a sharp suit, looks like the future-on-the-half-shell. It all got blown out of the water by 60s and 70s-era lack of standards and discrimination and an unwillingness to TRY. Sixties-era, anti-culture crapola that still reigns supreme. To much pot. Hippies ruined everything.
What's startling about the bad review is these quartets are hardly over-intellectualized. In fact most are quite beautiful or evocative; the Cage stunningly so. The LPs this collection came off were among my favorites of that era and I doubt a better or more nightmarish Black Angels has ever been done despite recent attempts by Kronos and others. Amazing playing by committed performers. A deal and a bargain.
For ten bucks this is like gold for free. Have at it!
Many Undiscovered Treasures.......2003-01-08
It's almost laughable not to pick up this disc. The price alone makes the set worth it. Added to that the fact that many of these works are not available in other forms and this disc is a no-brainer for fans of the late 20th century string quartet. The sampling transcends styles, from the almost improvisatory sonic canvas of Earle Brown, to the surprisingly beautiful almost minimal quartet of Cage, the horrific depiction of war in Crumb's justly famous Black Angels, or the almost traditional sounding Schonbergisms of Stepan Wolpe, this is an eclectic collection and well worth the modest investment.
I won't review everything on the album, as there is just too much. Highlights for me include the Earle Brown quartet, which is one of Brown's strongest early works. Since Brown is poorly represented on CD, every release of his is worth having, but the Second Quartet is a masterwork of tonal subtlety. Cage's Quartet was written just before he moved into his more aleatoric phase. It is highly modal and almost a precusor to minimlism, a very pleasing work that should be more widely known. Christian Wolff is also a composer who is underrepresented on CD (though Mode is quickly redressing the imbalance.) Summer is also a protominimalist work, based on stark 5ths. The reading of Black Angels is good, though not anything to supplant the Kronos reading, which is still my favorite. Also interesting are Quartets by Wolpe and Leon Kirchner.
So if you have any interest in American string work of the late 20th century, you need this disc. It is indispensible and very beautifully played. And the Vox Box price is unbeatable.
compendium of the richness of American innovation.......2000-04-05
This is a great showcase of the American string quartet, innovation, vision, iconoclasm, all elements which we often overlook and forget easily. But only Elliot Carter is missing, and that's because he has what! Five Quartets now.Inclusion of the First Carter would have rounded things out. The Earle Brown here is a neglected masterwork. Based on graphic notation the performers don't improvise so much as are given entrance freedoms within a prescribed range. The affect can be mysterious, haunting, also innovative with a wide pallette of extended techniques, at the bridge, sul ponticello, plucking. We often forget the traditional beauty Cage engaged the early part of his career, the Forties. This Quartet is a fine consummate example of that, with soft, gentle lines, very sparce, and transparent, also he limits himself to a few tones, tossed around the various voices. Structures by Feldman is an early work here, the Quartet is treated as one monolith sound, indistinguishable voices playing harmonics, cello playing where the violin plays, same range. All of Feldman's floating gentleness is here as well, perhaps too much at times, like it overspends its welcome. Crumb's Black Angels is another classic, The Kronos has takened this around the block many times, Crumb always works well with a programmatic agenda in place, and here he transforms the Quartets introspective consititution to more a drammatic focus. Druckman as well also works well with a program but here there is none. He has a fine imagination for sonoric structures, balance, but its doesn't seem to amount to much. The Wolpe is one of his best works. His creativity was uneven, here the violence and charged motives he is found of are in place to jump, and reiterate, toss around in an environment of high energy. Wolff's Summer is an early work prior to his metamorphosis into utilization of political imagery by comparison, this is a beautiful work, but cold, Wolff also needs a program, which he profoundly found, He has alater Quartet he wrote in the Eighties that is more compelling.
An interesting sampling of a musical dead end........1999-06-18
Superb analog transfers and excellent playing, I suppose. (I mean, how can you tell with music like this?) OK, I'm not a fan of this kind of music, but at this price I thought the collection was worth chancing. So far, I've found that the best way to listen to this recording is to let the music wash over you while you enjoy the sheer variety of sounds that the composers and players create. And there are some pleasant surprises, particularly the Cage quartet (from 1950) which contains genuine emotion and ends with a brief movement chock full of--gasp!--sprightly tunes. Makes me wonder what might have been had these composers shown more interest in music and less interest in mathematical gymnastics designed to impress their colleagues at the academy. At any rate, I recommend this album as an interesting sonic experience and a good sampling of the dead-end serialist/avant-garde genre that is now being supplanted by a return to music that recognizes tonality. (If you really want great 20th century quartets, incidentally, buy the 6 by Bartok).
Fantastic Collection.......1999-03-24
This set is a must if you have the slightest interest in avant-garde music from the 50s and 60s. Not a single weak piece, excellent sound and performances, and the price can't be beat!

Customer Reviews:
Dread is the band!.......2005-09-28
This was the last album recorded by the original lineup of Dread Zeppelin. The only founding members who remained in the group after this were Tortelvis and Butt-Boy. Anyway, as a last hurrah, this album is a pretty good one. There are a lot of good songs here, especially on the first half of the album. There are strong cover versions of "Ramble On", "Viva Las Vegas" and "What is and What Should Never Be". There is also an amusing, if dated, original song called "Li'l Baby Elvis Jackson", about a hypothetical baby born to Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Jackson. The best song on the second half of the album is probably "Brick House (of the holy!)", which is a medley of "Brick House" by the Commodores and "Houses of the Holy" by Led Zeppelin. This album is a fitting "swan song" for Dread Zeppelin, and the group's fans should enjoy it.
Viva Las Vegas!!!!!!.......2004-06-14
I had never heard of Dread Zeppelin until two weeks ago when I watched American Casino on the Discovery channel. Their song, Viva Las Vegas, is the theme song, and after some research I found out that Dread Zeppelin did the song. Really great band.
Royale with Cheese.......2004-02-21
Four Stars 'cause Un-Led-Ed was five stars. This production does not really spoof well on the No Quarter album. It is however as tasty as fresh hot fries from Mickey Dee's dipped in a Vanilla Shake!. The fusion Hard Rock, Blues, Jazz session on this CD is just staight up incredible. Tortelvis and the boys of fast food rock are talented musicians.
My Favorite Dread CD.......1999-05-05
This CD rules. It is by far my favorite. Viva Las Vegas is great! A must for all Dread Man Fans!
