"Lord, honey, you're a ghost," Minnie Pearl allegedly told Hank Williams III after their first meeting. It's a natural reaction to the skinny singer with the sunken cheekbones and, especially, the pinched nasal vocal--so reminiscent of his famous grandfather's catch-and-moan delivery. Hank III's debut, Risin' Outlaw, made that clear, but now his follow-up carves it on the wall, vocally, melodically, and lyrically. While the third-generation rebel strives mightily to find his own sound by wedding the spooky, old-style country blues and dark themes of his grandfather (Hank Sr.) to the Southern rock and boogie of his dad (Hank Jr.), at times he's guilty of trying too hard to buck Nashville ("Trashville") and re-create the misery of the Williams family tradition. Song after song packs danger and despair between the lines, in drinking to kill the pain, in wallowing in depression, in walking the "low road" of life. That said, III knows how to conjure a gutbucket rhythm ("7 Months and 39 Days") as well as a mournful tearjerker ("5 Shots of Whiskey"), and his touring band keeps things spare, raw, and honkin'. Not everything comes together, but there's no doubting this is a fascinating snapshot of a magical performer struggling to make his own legend. --Alanna Nash

Wow........2007-02-23
I grew up in rural Indiana, and grew up on honky-tonk and rock 'n roll. This is the purest honky-tonk album I've heard in a long time. (and maybe the best I've ever heard too) He sounds so much like his grandfather, It's eerie. Wonderful album, and III's best country effort, by far.
Peace
It's Hank III, buy it for cryin out loud!!.......2007-01-21
This is Hank III showing what this country boy can do best. He brings the "real" country back to the masses. I love this guys music and I don't even listen to country. All that new stuff ain't anything but pop music anyway.
If you buy this you have to buy his latest "Straight to Hell" too.
Hank 3! Just as good if not better than the original Hank.......2007-01-10
Hank 3 doing what he knows best, REAL COUNTRY!
GOOD CW.......2006-07-04
I used to say I don't like country. Then I said well except for Hank and Patsy. Now I am saying, I LOVE HANK III ! He does sound a lot like his Grandpa and not so much like his daddy whom I have never much liked. I was really expecting him to be more rockabilly which I love but he seems pretty classic. I will not be surprised when he kicks out the jams on some future disk. I recommend this disk.
Not My Style of Country.......2006-04-05
I'm a big fan of Outlaw and Texas Country, however, still album was not for me. Hank III is too raw, too basic, and too lacking for me. However, he does have a very unique sound and style and I can't think of anyone else out there that he sounds like. Still I'd be cautious about buy this CD and listen to the song samples that Amazon provides.

Yay!.......2007-05-06
A true test to how good an album is: how many times can u listen to it in a row and still discover something new with each listen. By the 5th spin i'm hooked. Truly a bunch of guys to celebrate. Off-key, puzzling, beautiful tapestry of funk, rock and piano. When the piano kicks in on 'cough coughing' i had butterflies in my chest. I can't wait to hear their other albums.
I am blown away........2007-04-12
Wow. This band is truly refreshing. They are a rainbow paisley oasis in a desert of brown Dockers. I hope they stick around for a long time.
Menomena's First Album.......2005-10-12
First of all, "I Am the Fun Blame Monster" is an awesome album title because it is an anagram of "Menomena's First Album"...who does that?! Regardless of their inventive album title, Menomena's sound is also wildly creative. The thought and experimentation that went into this album is incredible and I hope everyone gets to experience the wonder of the monster...plus, the album presentation is something to be proud of and, best of all, fun to play with. I bought the album for my boyfriend and was very tempted to keep it for myself ;)
Glad I found this band.......2005-03-13
I'm almost ashamed to say that I've just recently started listening to this band, even though they hail from my city, good old gritty Portland, OR. Though I really can't comment on the mathematics and computer programming of this music (though somehow that impresses me in a geeky kind of way), I can tell you in my humble opinion, that this album is mature and sophisticated, yet not at all inaccessible. I'm thoroughly impressed with their crashing orchestral sound... and equally blown away by the fact that they totally rock!!
As it's been said before, there is this sort of low-fi Radiohead quality to their stuff, but I hestitate labeling or associating Menomena too closely with them. After listening to this album with complete abandon, I feel like I've been through an Experience. I'm spent, but thoroughly invigorated and hopeful.
"Try and stop us now!".......2005-01-11
This little Fun-Blame Monster sure came outta nowhere, didn't it? I mean, we have pitchfork throwing up a "featured review" one moment, followed by a chorus of indie kids and online mags screaming "hell ya!" and then it's forgotten in time for the year-end best-of lists... It came and went so fast that I'd mostly forgotten about it until I randomly came upon a used copy at the local record shop. The crude dragon drawing on the front insisted that I give it a sample listen, and, rolling my eyes, I grudgingly obliged. Now about this local record store, I have to give them credit that they even have listening stations for the used c.d.s. Still, they make it pretty clear that they don't want you there too long by making it very uncomfortable- you stand in a little booth with nothing to lean on or sit on. I wasn't planning on being there too long- only 30 secs a song, 9 songs, a quick little five minutes, right? I pressed play...and stood there for the whole 45 minute runtime. Man, it blew me away.
The first thing that sucks you in is the drumming. It pummels you with complex, danceable, near-hip-hop beats- not unlike those from the Flaming Lips Soft Bulletin. And then, the melodies come in, weave a tapestry in your head, and keep you eagerly anticipating each new moment. Piano, Saxophone, Keyboards and bass flow together in most unexpected and blissful ways. I can't remember when I last heard such bewilderingly ornate melodies- those perfect tunes that never repeat a single time more than they have to, and that reward every time you listen but are never to obtuse to leave your head.
Each song exemplifies an unique approach, but it's a wonderfully sequenced album with many of the pieces flowing into each other. Really, the only weak link are the lyrics, which are pleasant but certainly not standout. But this is POP music of the highest order. The whole stands together as an ode to the clarity that comes out of loneliness- those 4 am moments when you stare out your window, perfectly content to be perfectly alone.
Yup, it was "left-field" alright, so left-field it seems it's already been forgotten. That's a real shame- this is, without a doubt, one of the most brilliant pop records in recent years. Grab it while you can.

"Everybody's got a right/To their dream." So begins Stephen Sondheim's 1991 show Assassins--and in this case, said dreams involve killing an American president. The characters form a veritable rogues' gallery, including John Hinckley, Lee Harvey Oswald and John Wilkes Booth of course, but also half-forgotten luminaries such as Leon Czolgosz (who killed McKinley) and "Squeaky" Fromme (who aimed for Gerald Ford with an unloaded gun). While Sondheim's lyrics are trenchant as ever, his music, which ranges from Sousa pomp to clever little waltzes, is technically brilliant but also oddly uninvolving. (Many fans prefer the recording of the 1991 Off-Broadway version, though "Something Just Broke," which was added to the 1992 London production, makes its recorded debut here.) Still, there are several high points. In "Unworthy of Your Love," for instance, Hinckley and Fromme wax poetic about their unrequited love for Jodie Foster and Charles Manson, respectively, in a Burt Bacharach-style ballad that's deliberately (I hope!) sappy. And of course as with most Sondheim shows, the cast of this revival--Michael Cerveris, Mario Cantone, Becky Ann Baker, Marc Kudisch, Denis O'Hare--is very good. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Unworthy of This Show.......2007-03-01
Assassins is a masterpiece of American theatre. Through a revue of skits and songs, it examines ideas we don't want to face, and shows us the flip side of the American Dream. The score rates as one of Sondheim's best, and the overall effect, when the show is performed well, is incredibly powerful. For years, people have wanted to mount a production on Broadway.
Given this result, they needn't have bothered.
I am still amazed at how much this production got wrong. The principal cast is nothing short of dreadful: the acting is almost laughably overwrought; the pacing keeps getting disrupted by pauses held too long and lines spoken too slowly; some singers are frequently behind the tempo (notably Michael Ceveris as Booth), while others are painful to listen to (like Jeffrey Kuhn as Zangara and Mario Cantone as Sam Byck); the new orchestrations allow for more musicians in the pit, but are much less effective than the earlier arrangements.
To top it all off, this production includes "Something Just Broke", a song sung by the Ensemble as various "average" Americans of different time periods recalling where they were when the president was shot. The song was introduced in the London production, presumably for people who didn't understand the show to have something to latch on to, but it was mercifully kept out of the published vocal score and libretto. It's not a bad song in and of itself, but musically it does not fit in with the rest of the score, and dramatically it doesn't fit in with the rest of the script. Worse, it is placed right between the Kennedy assassination -- the climax of the show -- and the finale, thus skewing all the dramatic momentum and depriving the show of an effective resolution.
The result of all this is that the comic moments aren't funny, the powerful moments fail to move, and the wonderful music is left ho-hum.
I realize that the extraordinary cast of the original production of Assassins presents a dauntingly high standard for everyone else to compare to, but the college productions I've seen were better than this.
Great. .......2006-11-08
What an amazingly talented cast! Neil Patrick Harris, Marc Kudisch, Alex Gemignani (The new Valjean in the revival of Les Miserables) and of course, the former demon barber of Fleet Street, Michael Cerveris (in the role that won him a Tony)...Just to hear these giants of musical theatre perform together as an ensemble alone is worth the price of this recording. This recording is so wonderfully done, and I can't recommend this enough.
'Unworthy of your Love' and 'The Ballad of Booth' are heartbreakingly beautiful, strange that I say that considering the subject matter, but it's true, those two songs alone will stay with you for days on end. The Ballad of Booth has poetic and tragic lyrics like 'Damn my soul, if you must, let my body turn to dust, let it mingle with the ashes of my country...What I did, I did well, and I did it for my country. Let them cry 'Dirty Traitor!', they will understand later...'. and the hauntingly gorgeous melody that goes with those lyrics is just so well, romantic! But then you have the tongue-in-cheek, slightly macabre numbers like 'The Gun Song' and 'Everybody's Got The Right' with lyrics like, 'Everybody's got the right to be happy. Life's not as bad as it seems! Everybody deserves a little sunshine...' and 'All you have to do is, move your little finger...and you can change the world!'
What a rollarcoaster of emotion! I mean, seriously, who else but Sondheim could pull that off and make it the brilliant masterpiece that it clearly is?
One of my biggest regrets is not seeing this during it's brief run in 2004. :(
Deserves a place in your Sondheim Discography.......2006-07-28
Like other reviewers I was fortunate enough to see Roundabout's revival production but perhaps unfortunate that my total enjoyment of that production may bias my critical listening. I can't help but recall the proprietor (Marc Kudish) caressing a pistol into the hand of each assassin when listening to the opening Everybody's Got The Right.
However, while fans of Sondheim and musical theater will argue over every nuance, I find that both this and the original are excellent in their own way. Yes, the voices in the first recording are more refined, yet this recording seems to better capture the character's mannerisms in the vocal stylization, whether the twitchy madness of Guiteau (Dennis O'Hare) or the depressed howl of Sam Byck (Mario Cantone).
This is a worthwhile recording and one that provides me with a reprise of the excellent staging and acting of this quirky play.
Dashed high hopes.......2006-07-14
Assassins is a fascinating and surprising show. You can't imagine a more unlikely topic for a musical and yet, when you hear and/or see the show, you can't help to be impressed by the entire production. Maybe if I'd never heard the original cast recording, I would have given this a higher rating, but, to be frank, this recording suffers in comparison to the original recording in nearly every way.
While the diction on this recording is often impressive...especially Neil Patrick Harris's...too often it is accomplished at the price of tempo. Too many times the musical director has made the choice to slow down portions of the songs to the point of sluggishness. Absolutely NONE of the performances is superior to the original. That doesn't mean that any of the newer performances are horrible, it's just that they don't measure up. The one who comes the closest is Neil Patrick Harris whom I find naturally charming and vulnerable in anything he does.
The best addition to this recording is Mario Cantone's rant as Sam Byck. Unfortunately, I can't recommend getting this recording based solely on that. The biggest mis-step is the omission of the full, final, Kennedy scene. Hearing it on the original recording for the first time is an absolutely thrilling and chilling experience. Not having it all here is a MAJOR disappointment.
Buy the original recording first and check this one out from the library.
Letdown from the original.......2006-04-10
I have been a huge fan of Assassins since it first came out back in '91. While I've never had the pleasure of seeing the play in person, I've read it several times and listened to the original cast recording so often one can hardly believe it. So when I saw "Broadway Cast Recording" I was thrilled. Then I listened to it. I went from thrilled to appalled.
John Weideman, who wrote the music, seems to prefer the Broadway cast recording--at least he says so in its liner notes. I'm not sure why. While some of the songs are still excellent (like the Hinckley-Fromme duet "Unworthy of Your Love"), many of them are just plain painful to listen to. Most of the time the singing vaccilates between being totally flat of affect (most notably Moore in "The Gun Song") to hyperbolic melodrama. Booth mumbles to the point of near-unintelligibility in several songs; Zangara sounds eerily like the mob boss from 'Johnny Dangerously' that keeps calling everyone "farging bastages"; Moore sings nearly the whole time as if she'd OD'd on sedatives; and Guiteau sounds so stereotypically gay that GLAAD should be suing the producer.
It almost seems as if the cast are not sure what do do with their characters. The cast of the Original Cast Recording hit the characters perfectly--an outstanding mix of suffering, despair, anger and hostility. The Broadway cast can't seem to, in the language of the musical, "connect" to the characters. For me this is a huge failing, as the "charcaters" here are real individuals; if the performers can't connect to them, how can we be expected to?
There are also some content differences between this recording and the original. Several brief additions are made from elsewhere in the musical, and the new song "Something Just Broke" written for the Broadway revival is included on the recording. However, about half of the last act (which is included on the original) is cut out. Sadly, the material cut out is far more moving, unsettling and significant than the material added. Also, "Something Just Broke", while a fine song (and performed better than most of the rest of the material), unfortunately breaks up the natural link between the Kennedy assassination's triumphalist ending and the closing version of "Everybody's Got the Right".
I gave this three stars because I love Assassins. It is a brilliant and unnerving drama. But the Original Cast Recording is immensely superior to the Broadway Cast Recording in its ability to reveal this to the audience. I'm glad it was revived, and I'm glad it won three Tony awards--now it can get the recognition it deserves; but for me, I'll stick to the original version I fell in love with years ago. If only the Broadway recording has found a way to be "worthy of your love"...

On his second Philo release, singer-songwriter Slaid Cleaves builds a bridge between New England, where he grew up, and Texas, where he now lives. Cleaves's voice often affects a yearning quality reminiscent of traditional Irish music, and his songs are populated by the sort of tragic characters familiar to old folk ballads. In "Cold and Lonely," a poor farmer grieves for his dead wife and children, while the narrative "Breakfast in Hell" is a Canadian logger's answer to "John Henry." The suffering takes a more personal turn in "One Good Year," where Cleaves laments, "It's a bitter wind, in your face every day / It's the little sins, that wear your soul away." But just when the downcast mood begins to grow oppressive, Cleaves comes back with the defiant "Bring It On" and the redemptive "This Morning I Am Born Again," featuring Woody Guthrie's amazing lyrics set to new music. Austin-based producer Gurf Morlix , known for his long association with Lucinda Williams, contributes spare and evocative instrumental textures. --Rick Mitchell

Country Blues.......2007-06-23
Broke Down is a fine example of crossover country blues. It best tunes are haunting acoustic tracks and evocative vocals, such "this morning I am born again". It's hard to classify as just country, bluegrass or folk. Slaid Cleves voice is at his best in the low toned country gospel tracks on this album. It's his best work I think.

this was a gift for my husband and was greatly enjoyed. This is nice easy listening folk type music. It also caused some other friends to start listening to him.

...Slaid Cleaves "Broke Down" is such a good record! Slaid is in the vein of many a folk singer-songwriter, but this album stands out from the rest.
Slaid writes and sings songs that are very descriptive; it's like a story being told in front of you.
The music is very laid back and mellow with lots of acoustic guitar.
Also, it's solid throughout start to finish, no duds in there. Superb stuff.

This album is astonshingly good. The more I listen to it the more I am blown away.
McCabe's #6 - Slaid Cleaves 05-23-2004.......2004-05-24
This is a review of Slaid's concert at McCabe's in Santa Monica on Sunday 05-23-2004. He was simply incredible, playing his signature blend of Folk-rock & Alt/Country with his touring band (His fellow guitarist Michael O'Conner ROCKED!) He played most of this album along with songs from his latest album "Wishbone". My favorites of the night were the title track (Lots of airplay on Sirius Disorder // 24 satellite channel) and 'Bring It On' - also a staple of Sirius' and NPR radio. The encore brought Slaid alone with his guitar, playing a unplugged piece from his new album called 'New Year's Day'. After the concert - he signed my copy of "Broke Down" with his inscription "For Joe, Slaid Cleaves 2004". I told him he was the first artist that I heard over Sirius Satellite Radio, and he was happy to hear that. He told me he was 'thinking' of satellite radio, I told him to go "Sirius". He said he would look into it. Thanks Slaid!! JG

Great CD from a great band.......2007-01-05
New Bluegrass with a classic sound. Great new sound without departing too far from the standard.
Good First Effort.......2005-02-02
I found this CD after hearing a song that King Wilkie had on an Americana compilation and decided to give them a chance. I was not disappointed.
The covered material on this CD is solid, particularly Blue Yodel # 7 by Jimmie Rodgers and Where the Old Red River Flows by Jimmie Davis.
The new efforts, by Ted Pitney and Reid Burgess of the group seem fresh, but maintain a definite connection to their Bluegrass forerunners. Broke Down and Lonesome and Goodby So Long are two excellent new songs.
Craftmanship is evident from every member of King Wilkie, and they weave their talents into a pleasing blanket of good ole mountain music.
Highly recommended.
King Wilkie - traditional bluegrass - alive and kickin'.......2004-09-18
I just saw King Wilkie at the Wheatland Music Festival in Michigan where they made a ton of new fans. The crowds really loved the energy and enthusiasm they bring to traditional bluegrass. I got the feeling that the band really appreciates and respects its bluegrass musical roots but still feels free to explore and create new, original material.
King Wilkie's lineup features a mandolin, fiddle, banjo, two guitars, and a bass. Their playing is very clean and tight and their harmonies nice and smooth. The band has a nice, relaxed, unpretentious style that makes them a pleasure to watch and to hear. Whenever they got going on a hard-drivin', fast tempo tune, it was a real kick to see them smile and lean into each other as if they were just really enjoying playing music together.
I've just been listening this afternoon to their CD, Broke. I had to borrow a friend's since they immediately sold out at Wheatland before I could get one. The CD does a great job of capturing their sound and, in some ways, almost has the feel of a live performance. It contains a nice variety of traditional tunes as well as some very strong, original material.
I have a feeling that we'll be hearing a lot more from King Wilkie. If you ever have a chance to see them in person, do it. You're in for a treat and I guarantee that you won't be disappointed.
The closest to the masters yet..........2004-06-13
Amidst a glut of bluegrass King Wilkie's ancient sound stays close to the twangy Appalachian drone that banjo purists strive for. King Wilkie is six young cats doing traditional old-time and bluegrass tunes. Named after Bill Monroe's favorite horse, they do mostly originals (This flipped me out; I thought I was listening to a 1940's Pete Seeger record) and pay homage to the music's forefathers. "Broke," features 13 tracks of acoustic old-time that will leave you yearning for yet another trancelike ballad. There is a lesson to be learned for their grasp of a dying art. The group consists of Drew Breakley on bass, Reid Burgess on mandolin, John McDonald on guitar and vocals, Ted Pickney on lead guitar, Nick Reeb on fiddle, and Abe Spear on banjo. Their name inspired by Bill Monroe's Tennessee walking horse, King Wilkie is a Virginia-based band that plays bluegrass that really gallops. While only in their twenties, their high-stepping traditional approach to the music illustrates the horsesense that often only comes with years of experience. King Wilkie's first album, "True Songs," was an independent release in 2003. Now, with their sophomore release, they have the support of the reputable Rebel Records label. The band plays well together with a feisty energy full of bluegrass oats, and their lively set on "Broke" offers plenty to enthuse fans of all ages.
Just as they might open a bluegrass festival set, they blaze from the chute with a one-minute version of Ralph Lewis' "40 West." Tapping material from the backroads of the genre, they give us snappy renditions of the traditional "Little Birdie," Jimmie Davis' "Where the Old Red River Flows," and Jimmie Rodgers' "Blue Yodel #7." They cover Bill Cox's "Sparkling Brown Eyes" and Will Ramsey's "Some Glad Day." Between band members Ted Pitney (lead guitar) and Reid Burgess (mandolin), the CD also includes six original tunes that offer some memorable lines such as Pitney's "drifting away into loneliness," and Burgess' sentiments to "head down south to that old abode." These are very common themes in bluegrass music and the subject matter for traditional music lovers. With their songwriting, I would encourage them to respect these traditional themes but to also strive for new inspiration messages that tell us things that haven't been heard before. Pitney, for example, gives us a sad and tragic ballad with a new interpretive twist called "Lee and Paige," about a young loving couple's encounter with a train. "Broke Down and Lonesome" is getting some good airplay as a result of being featured on Prime Cuts of Bluegrass, Volume 68.
Pitney and Burgess met at college in Ohio in 2000. After graduating in 2001, they moved to a Charlottesville farmhouse and got the band together that now also includes Drew Breakey (bass), John McDonald (guitar), Nick Reeb (fiddle), and Abe Spear (banjo). Pitney, Burgess and McDonald are the sextet's vocalists. King Wilkie is a band with a lot of horsepower. Galloping in a traditional groove, they will go far on the bluegrass festival and concert circuit. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

From a band worthy of worship by Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Papa Roach fans, (hed)'s second album is a dozen-song collection that's personal, versatile, and eminently listenable. Much of Broke's dark yet surprisingly melodic and memorable charm lies in the portentous and chaotic musical climate the band creates. The well-crafted tunes explore a gamut of styles within the loosely defined hip-hop/metal genre, moving from the primal groove of "Killing Time" to the lively, Van Halen-inspired "Feel Good." The sextet includes a turntablist in DJ Product c. 1969, plus two guitarists, allowing the lineup to create a massive sound rife with subtle textures. From the psychotic vocals of "Pac Bell" to the epic rock chorus and hip-hop verses of "Bartender," (hed) seamlessly weave close-to-the-bone angst with commensurate musicality. This on-the-rise Orange Country band have definitely delivered the goods with this one. --Katherine Turman

I can feel my spirit leaving.......2006-08-04
If ever there was such a thing as a perfect union between hard rock and rap, (hed) PE surely discovered the perfect balance.
I actually found out about (hed) PE from the song Feel Good with Serj of SOAD and Morgan Lander of Kittie. I loved Serj and Morgan's parts but wasn't entirely sure about Jahred's. The rapping eventually grew on me so I decided to pick up Broke purely on a hunch. Turns out that I really do enjoy this CD, much to my surprise.
If the topic of sex is taboo for you, definitely look elsewhere, (hed) PE doesn't shy away from that topic. Other than that, if you like rock beats and you like rap, Broke just might be exactly what you're looking for. For the majority of this CD it really is just rapping, but Pac Bell is a little more than that. A lot of the time the songs on here are just fun, but Pac Bell seems, I don't know, real. The intensity in Jahred's voice is incredible towards the end of the track. Other than that, Bartender is a great song with excellent verses and an extremely memorable chorus. Jesus (Of Nazareth) has some pretty honest lyrics and yet another great chorus. The Meadow is a nice closing track, with almost a Sublime-esque quality. Not the best song, but it seems a fitting end.
My favorite songs are Killing Time, Feel Good, Bartender, Pac Bell, and Jesus (Of Nazareth). Broke isn't a groundbreaking CD, just a solid listen. However, if you're a band wanting to infuse both rock and rap together and avoid being completely cliche, you might want to listen to a few (hed) PE CDs. Each song has a solid beat and, the majority of the time, good rapping. A worthy addition for any music library.
Best Hed P.E. CD.......2006-05-04
The title says it all. Even though I like all their cds they have yet to top this one and that will be hard to do. These guys know how to make good music and they prove it with this cd.
If it ain't BROKE then don't buy it!.......2006-03-09
Broke is by far the best CD ever put out by (hed)PE...from 'KILLING TIME' to 'THE MEADOW' this CD is worth every second. 'KILLING TIME' opens with a great song to get you into the CD...not the best song on the CD but one of the most 'fan-friendly' songs showing the rap and rock side of the CD. Great track. 'WAITING TO DIE' is one of my favorite tracks ever done by (hed)PE...the screaming is great. As a huge fan of Kittie and System of a Down, the next track 'FEEL GOOD' is just a blessing. The verse is great, I just love the monotone rapping done 'I'm ready n****, slice like a macheti n****'. Morgan is awsome, great screaming voice, but it's Serj's bridge that makes this song kick@$$! 'BARTENDER' was the first single. It's decent, reminds me of a Sublime song...not bad. 'I GOT YOU' and 'BOOM' are kicking songs, especially 'BOOM' it's just so freaking awsome and in your face "how you like that!" The start of 'I GOT YOU' reminds me of a KoRn song, the way he sings is like Jonothan Davis. 'SWANDIVE' is one of my favorite songs here, different, more mellow, melodic and slower paced with piano and a great verse...the chorus is heavier, but it's the verse that I really like. 'THE MEADOW' is a great closer, much like 'SWANDIVE' great great way to go out. I just wish every (hed)PE CD would be this good.
This is a really good CD!.......2005-11-07
This CD has alot of really good songs on it, like Bartender which was played on the radio alot a few years ago, and The Meadow which is another awesome song. I also really liked Pac Bell. This is one of those CD's that you can listen to over and over because all of the songs are really good. You should get it.
A flash of brilliance.......2005-10-12
Oh yes - this is the good stuff! A much more focused effort compared to their debut with some great arrangements, terrific sounds, excellent vocals and unique beats - what else could a white, middle-class, self-confessed metal-head want?! (hed) really came into their own with this album. What I particularly like are the computerised beats and sudden flourishes of human drumming over the top - really creative and, if I can get away with saying this, showing something akin to what Peter Gabriel did live with Manu Katche on the Secret World Tour. The two songs on Broke I'm referring to here are `Pac Bell' and `Jesus (of Nazareth)'. Everyone goes on about the song `Bartender', but I don't rate it as high as some other stuff on here. I can't really fault any of the tunes on `Broke' but I do particularly like `Killing Time', `Boom', `Swan Dive', `Stevie' and `Jesus'. The thing I've learned most to admire about this band is Mawk's sparse basslines. Most players would lace these songs with monstrous riffs, but his playing shows some damn fine maturity. I'd recommend this album to anyone because it's not overly obtuse, and it showcases a band that is top of their tree. To be honest, I don't think much else compares in this genre.

Another Awesome CD!.......2007-06-17
Caught The Mother Truckers at The Continental Club in Austin, Texas. I have never been a great country fan other than Johnny Cash and a few others, but TMT became one of my favorite bands in a span of an hour and a half. Both Josh Zee and Teal Collins sing and play guitar. Zee is a "man's man" and Teal Collins was a woman I wanted to marry on the spot. Both have so much appeal and chemistry. Still today I don't know if I prefer the lyrics or the music. How they are not bigger than the world is beyond me. A great CD!!
Nothing short of amazing.......2007-05-24
First I would like to say that I saw this band at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle, and even though I knew how good they would be I was still blown away.
I stumbled across these folks looking for more stuff from Josh Zee's old band Protein. I agree with the 3 previous reviewers that this is a solid album, as is their last one "Something Worth Dying For".
Gram Parsons for the 21st Century.......2007-01-09
Teal Collins and Josh Zee are engaging and smart writers and singers. After seeing this group live at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, TX, I bought the CD immediately. You know how the great feeling you have when you see live music generates such enthusiasm that you just can't resist buying the CD? Then, the CD is disapppointing. Something is always missing. You can't quite put your finger on it, but it's not the same. Well, this CD does not disappoint. Whatever it is that generates that great feeling when you see these guys live is captured on this CD and I'm sure it has something to do with both the quality of writing and musicianship. These musicians are accomplished. Their lyrics are smart and insightful, the music is soulful, the harmonies are tight. I couldn't help but think of Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris when I heard Collins and Zee harmonizing.
Then, Collins belts the Chris Smithers written "Love Me Like a Man" Bonnie Raitt classic done in a great Josh Zee guitar slinging arrangement. Their influences are right, and they take the genre to a new level. This is one of the best CDs I've heard in a long while. These folks deserve support.
Awesome Sound.......2006-10-21
I saw the Mother Truckers live in Austin and believe me they light up the stage. Their music never gets old no matter how many times you listen. Check out their first album as well titled Something Worth Dying For. A little rougher but so enjoyable. There's even a hidden song that will blow you away. The singing on both albums great and the guitar work is out of this world.
If you're tired of the same old pop country, this is for you!.......2006-07-27
The Mother Truckers' "Broke, Not Broken" is a mixture of blues, country, and rock that is different than anything out there. Quirky clever original lyrics, spine tingling vocals, and stunning guitar riffs differentiate BNB from the pack. You won't be dissapointed!

never disregard history!.......2006-08-25
This album was the first I ever heard that combined Heavy Metal with killer Keyboards. Wonderful rhythms. I first listened to this on 8-track in a friends nasty car for 4 hours while I waited for him to finish waiting on tables in 1974. Of course, anyone who's ever heard of Gary Wright will recognise the roots. I'm so glad I ordered this cd. It's still fabulous, maybe even more so than it was then. Especially if you love Bass. Real Bass. This is such good stuff. This album is sooo worth the price!

Buried Treasure.......2006-01-07
I was originally introduced to this band in the mid 70's as a member of the RCA (now BMG) record club. I guess I was about 14 years old. During that time their album "You Broke My Heart, So I Busted Your Jaw" was offered as a selection in my preferred genre (Hard Rock of course)...and I simply could not escape the title...I had to have it! I had no idea what to expect, but fortunately it turned out to contain some great songs such as: "Cotton Growing Man", "Old As I Was Born" and "Self Seeking Man". Actually, the music on this album was endearing enough for me to develop an affinity for this band, and as a result I began to dig deeper into their substantial...yet elusive back catalog which contains riches far beyond the splendor of these. Certainly, "You Broke My Heart..." is a solid effort (especially by today's standards). ...Is it is a classic? Not in the same since as "Spooky Two". I would recommend instead "That Was Only Yesterday". Though not as complete as a "Best Of" should be (it has nothing from "Witness" or "The Mirror"), still it contains most of "Spooky Two" (excluding only "I've Got Enough Heartaches") and all the highlights from "It's All About", and "The Last Puff". It also includes (an edited) "Prayer" which is a snippet from "Ceremony" (and probably all you need) and last but not least: "Cotton Growing Man".

Truly Beautiful Americana.......2007-04-08
The four stars are only because the dynamic range seems a bit off - I had to crank up my sound system to double its usual setting to really enjoy this (and then a few crashing chords were through the roof). However, this was a "must own" for me if only for the first section from "Louisiana Story," which is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever... it makes me shut my eyes and smile for pure bliss. A friend made a tape of it for me years ago, and I had never forgotten it. Recently, I finally put "Louisiana Story" on my NetFlix queue and could hardly send it back for the photography/music of the opening sequence. The CD recording isn't quite the same, but it's only off by a little (and has the advantage of not being interrupted by the film's narrative), but then, this is a suite, and not a soundtrack. The other works are also compelling, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear a theme I had always loved in Copeland's "Rodeo," assuming the tune to be original with him. Especially considering the low price, this is a great addition to your musical library.
