Customer Reviews:
A fitting CD.......2004-04-26
With a number by Paul Gross, several wonderfully Celtic songs, a couple of moody numbers, and some fun fast songs, this CD takes the emotions of due South seasons 3&4 and puts them to disk. I loved every song, and couldn't sit still to most of them.
A Great Eclectic Sampler.......2003-10-29
This is a great CD if you like listening to a wide range of music on one CD. If not, it is also a good starting point for finding new CDs. I have CDs of a lot of the contributing artists, and these songs are representative of their music overall.
The first volume is also good. There is a bit lighter tone to it in my opinion. GREAT spectrum of some Canadian music, in my opinion.
Excellent Canadian fare!.......2001-10-02
I am a huge fan of Due South. Even if you're not, though, you need to give this album a listen. There are two tracks on this CD that I don't enjoy..."Take Me Out to the Ballgame" and "Slave to Your Love." That's it. I still cry when I listen to "Holy Tears," because of the emotional last episode. "32 Down on the Robert MacKenzie" is an excellent, catchy song; it belongs with Gordon Lightfoot's "Ballad of Yarmouth Castle" and "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," other excellent Canadian story-songs about shipwrecks. Speaking of Gordon Lightfoot, Sarah McLachlan's remake of his "Song for a Winter's Night" is excellent--how I would love to hear her and Gordon do a duet of this song! "Western End of the Trail" is another great song...I would love to get a Due South Score by Jay Semko. And the "Due South Theme '97" is great, the traditional theme with a soaring electric guitar line.
I highly recommend this album!
It's better than bark tea.......2000-07-31
Fan of Due South ? Buy this. Not a fan of Due South ? What the heck, buy it anyway, it's that good.
1. "Oh, what a feeling" You'll go around with the words "What a Russshhhhhh" in your head for ages. A catchy indie guitar song.
2. "Drunken Sailor" (from the ep. Mountie on the Bounty) Takes the well-known song and puts POWER into it, with a tin whistle floating over the melody. Avast ye scurvy sea-dogs !
3. "Robert MacKenzie" (from the ep. Mountie on the Bounty)
I love the beginning to this one. Starts off calm and serene... then POW, you're hit with a song sung by the Mountie himself all about the sinking of the Robert MacKenzie. You can nearly imagine that you're standing at the helm of the ship, mist weaving itself around you... a great track.
4. "Mind" This one's slightly surreal - a song you can listen to yet not be listening to - if that makes any sense.
5. "Mounty on the Bounty" (from the same-named ep) Music taken from the episode. A fiddle (I think it's a fiddle) leads the tune in a Riverdance-style piece. Very good.
6. "Song for a winter's night" The sea ballads have gone - this is a mellow, quiet song by Sarah McLachlan. It's a really lovely song - one of my favourite's.
7. "Slave to your love" This one's okay. Nothing special. A rhythm/blues type song.
8. "From a million miles" Sounds slightly "Dawson's Creek"ish but it's okay.
9. "Take me out to the ball game" (from Dr. Longball) A laid-back, casual sounding song from Trevor Hurst which is very singable. I like the way pauses in the beat are used. This one's cool.
10. "November" Again, a slighty surreal piece of music interuppted by the occasional singing-without-words. It's a nice, dreamy piece, and unlike MIND (track 4) it's powerful at the same time.
11. "Cubically Contained" (from Mountie and Soul) Another laid-back piece which doesn't really build up to anything. Some guy with a guitar doing a talk/singing thing. Doesn't really make a big impression.
12. "Nobody's Girl" (from Mountie sings the Blues) Whenever I hear this, I think of Fraser doing his "dancing like a stick" impression whilst Michelle Wright was singing this. A boppy, feel-good song - nothing too heavy.
13. "Sophia's Pipes" Sounds kinda similar to Mountie on the Bounty (track 5). Also in a Riverdance style. Good stuff.
14. "Western end of the trail" (from Mountie on the Bounty) How much do I love this piece of piano and guitar music ? Your typical Due South tune - okay, so it's played nearly every episode, but it's still really, really good. I only wish it could go on for longer.
15. "Holy Tears" (from Call of the Wild) This track just blows me away every time i hear it. It's so moving. If you remember, it's played at the end of "Call of the Wild part 2. I guess you're just gonna have to hear this yourself. This track stood out from the very first time I heard the CD.
16. "Due South theme '97" The theme music which features at the beginning of every episode. I bought this CD mainly because of this.
Highlights - basically all of it.
Lowlights - there are a couple of weak tracks on here, but overall it's a very well-put-together album.
2 critisism though - 1. I was expecting the theme tune with words to be on here
2. "Northwest Passage" (The Hand of Franklin song) really really really should have featured on the CD, with it being the last thing you here on the last ever episode.
Thankyou kindly for reading this.
Lo mejor.......2000-05-10
Hay temas preciosos en este CD, tan bonitos como la serie de la que es banda sonora.

The River/The Plow that Broke the Plains.......2007-05-17
This performance is excellent it is a worthy addition to your collection. It is an exciting performance by the Philharmonic Virtuosi under the direction of Richard Kapp. Both the Plow that Broke the Plains and the River (complete scores here) are a part of American History. The music woven through out these scores should be very familiar as they represent part of Americana.

Background:
Many years ago, I have purchases these two compositions in Vinal. As I recall the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority*) was commissioned by the federal government (FDR's New deal in the 1930's) to solve the growing electrical shortage in the southern states while attempting to redress the damage done to the Mississippi by man or visa versa. After years of study and hearings they decided to damn the Tennessee River and build a hydro electric plant. The problem was that this would resultant in flooding many would displace many people, and whole towns had to be moved to new locations. Virgil Thomson was commissioned to prepare a score for a documentary that would be prepared to present the project to the communities. It was elegant in its execution and masterfully integrated with the film.
* Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is a federally owned corporation in the United States created in May 1933 to provide navigation, flood control, electricity generation, fertilizer manufacturing, and economic development in the Tennessee Valley, a region particularly hard hit by the Great Depression. The TVA was envisioned not only as an electricity provider, but also as a regional economic development agency that would use federal experts and electricity to rapidly modernize the region's economy and society. The TVA's jurisdiction covers most of Tennessee, parts of Alabama, Mississippi, and Kentucky, and small slices of Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia.
I you want to move beyond Copeland. Virgil Thompson has 2 classics.......2007-04-06
Having accidentally taped a Neville Marriner selection of the River, I wanted the entire composition. This is an excellent rendition of very attractive American works. If you like Appalachian Spring and Rodeo, you will love these works and the recording does them justice.

One and own..........2001-02-04
Hancock is one the best songwriters to come out of Austin and since the 70's has built a body of songs only Bob Dylan can match in a good day. It's true that his songwriting and voice reminds of Dylan, but only Dylan at his best. Sometimes Hancock is even better. In the Texan tradition Hancock is a kind of outlaw, not willing to work with the big labels, and going his own way, recording either in small labels or in his own label. Many people would like to hear on cd his tape collection, NO 2 ALIKE, a live 10 days recording of 140 songs. The conclusion from all this, is that you should buy any cd of Butch hancock whenever it's available, maybe tomorrow it won't be here. Any fan of Dylan has no excuses not to hear this guy, any fan of great songwriting would go the right way by listening to Hancock. The real thing!

Can I get an A-MEN?.......2001-06-08
Welcome brothers and sisters to the First Church of Polyester....... If y'all haven't heard the Rev (or better yet SEEN the Rev).... WHAT ARE Y'all waiting for? This was my first "Rev" cd; it wasn't and isn't my last. This is a wonderful mix of the fantastic musical talent as well as the pure comedy style that is sure to bring on tears and that hacking cough you get when you laugh so hard you can't get your breath! "Waffle House Fire", "Just Friends" and "Surf Party" are pure comedy classic; as well as politically incorrect, they have a pure insanity that transcends the Manson Nixon line; this is not just Southern Humor ala Foxorthy. Be forwarned; this is like eating home fries scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, topped diced and peppered; highly addictive! You won't be able to stop with just one CD: just a shame the 8-tracks are all sold out! Money WELL spent!
Hallaluja Rev Billy.......2001-03-11
I have a confession to make brothers and sister, I, am a comedy snob. Yes friend I refuse to partake of substandard comedy and shun the auditory companionship of funny stuff that just ain't funny.
Well gang we are blessed at this moment with the company of none other than the Reverend Billy C. Wirtz. Not only is the good Rev. one of the funniest men to crack a joke or tell a story while preformin' music, He is also one of the most musically gifted fellas to ever shoot out a tune whist crackin' a joke or tellin' a story. (the rest of you folks run along and listen to a coupla samples while the college boys & girls do the math on that last sentence then they can go listen when you get back). Just to add to the fun the CD is set up to continue the story through each cut as The Rev., Purvis and the rest of the gang at the First Church of Polyester Worship etc,.etc. wander their way through your cd player.
Go have a listen. I suspect you to will be saved.

Tractor-'Before,During And After The Dandelion Years'(Ozit).......2003-12-16
Very nice compilation release of tunes from a long-running talented UK underground psychedelic band.'Before,During...' includes rare and unreleased material.According to my sources,Tractor originally existed from 1969-1991.Recently they've reunited for various gigs around their home turf.Tracks I was most impressed with were "Jester",the Floyd-ish "Circuits Drawn","Steve's Hungarian Novel",Watching White Stars",the freak flag anthem "About Yourself",and "It's Got To Be Right".The folkish "Who Am I" isn't bad either. There's a good four song segment that was recorded at one of the big outdoor festivals in which they played."Bring What You Expect To Find","Drilling Hundreds",the jamming "Little Girl In Yellow" and "Sarcastic Bastard" rounds out this truly fantastic introduction(to me,at least) of a great psych ensemble.Should appeal to fans of the Deviants,Hawkwind, and Monster Magnet.Highly recommended.

Tractor - self-titled (Ozit) - 30th Anniversary Special Edition+6 bonus tracks.......2006-11-25
Originally released in 1972, as this is Ozit's CD reissue of their self-titled lp's 30th anniversary 'special edition'. Tractor,is of course the duo of players Jim Milne-guitar,bass&vocals and Steve Clayton on drums. Every bit as outstanding as their '...Dandelion Years' compilation(see my review). Superb British psychedelia, here JUST waiting to be fully experienced. About every track on this disc wails, but here's my run down of it all - absolute best tunes here are "Little Girl In Yellow", the trippy "Shubunkin" and the brilliantly done piece "Make The Journey" (almost worth the price of admission alone). Other notable tunes are "All Ends Up",the awesome-sounding "Watcher", the boogie rocker "Ravenscroft's 13 Bar" and the most beautifully done ballad I believe I may have ever heard "Everytime It Happens". Comes with six bonus tracks, including demos and a good 2001-02 studio session with Thomas Hewitt (Chris's son)and Nik Turner. Comes with a lavishly assembled twelve-page CD booklet, packed with info, memorbilia and newspaper reviews(great reproduction work, there). Straight and TO the point, a must-have.

Fantastic.......2007-07-17
On first hearing the title track in 1981, I started to weep - and I still do feel tearful every time I hear it 25 years later. Larry's reading of this beautiful song reflects the sorrow of the lyric perfectly. It's a masterful showcase of how powerful an instrument of expression the human voice can be. In an age when clowns like Morrissey are feted as great vocalists by clueless critics, then you should make sure you own this if you want to hear how soulfully a white guy really can sing!
a masterpiece.......2006-01-15
Larry Sparks is, I believe, the greatest living bluegrass singer (it's now 2006), with the possible exception of Ralph Stanley, if it is correct to call the latter a "bluegrass singer." This was probably already true in 198o. This is probably his best album.
"John Deere Tractor" is a take on the most classic bluegrass theme there is: the loss of home, and the sense of displacement felt by a "country boy" living in the city. It's also the only non-bluegrass song on the album, and a ballad to boot. Thus, it's an odd choice for the first song, but in practice it's perfect.
"Girl at the Crossroads Bar" is the definitive reading of a Bluegrass Cardinals song.
"Hot Sauce" is an instrumental that sounds a lot like "Ragtime Annie."
"I'd Rather be Alone" is a Flatt and Scruggs standard that here sounds like it was written for Sparks.
"Great High Mountain," written by Keith Whitley, gets its definitive reading here.
"Love of the Mountains" is a song by an obscure band called Lost and Found that Sparks here turns into a standard.
"Making Believe" is a slow and powerful country song.
"Nobody's Business" is a quick take on an old standard.
"When I Lay My Burdens Down" is a gospel with near-acapella singing by Sparks that is bluesy and moving.
And the final instrumental, "Carter's Blues," rounds out the album with a smooth, rolling rhythm and an immediately accessible melody.
This is a bluegrass classic that many non-bluegrass fans can appreciate, due to material like the title track, "Great High Mountain," and "When I Lay my Burdens Down" which depart from the usual bluegrass style.
on a great high mountain.......2002-11-02
To some critics and fans (I am one), Larry Sparks's John Deere Tractor, originally issued in 1980 and available now in CD for the first time, is among the greatest bluegrass albums ever recorded. Hearing it again for the first time in a long while, I am struck anew by its grace and beauty. Sparks has done many worthy recordings since, but none to match this one.
The music is superb, but never flashy, the emphasis always on Sparks's voice -- sort of like Carter Stanley's but with a pronounced blues edge -- and on the perfectly selected songs and instrumentals. The title track, a Lawrence Hammond composition telling yet again the eternal tale of the homesick country boy trapped in the big city, takes on an almost epic quality in Sparks's deceptively laconic reading. Through restraint and understatement he manages to speak to the authentic pain behind a real experience -- the real world is full of homesick country boys -- that, in less capable hands, would sound sappy and cliched.
Beyond this opening track, Sparks explores sorrow and hope moving comfortably through gospel, country, and folk, always within an assured, distinctive bluegrass sensibility. "Great High Mountain" sounds like an ancient Appalachian hymn but was actually written by a very young Keith Whitley. "Making Believe," the country heart song memorably covered by Buck Owens and, later, Emmylou Harris, here gets a near-definitive reading. "Carter's Blues," a haunting Anglo-American folk song from the Carter Family repertoire, is reimagined as a spare, contemplative instrumental, with Sparks displaying his extraordinary guitar-picking skills without ever showing off.
The air is sweet and pure on this great high mountain.

Album Description
The Love Tractor boys have done it again! This is the second record in less than a year from the Athens, GA band. "Black Hole" was released in April 2005, and a third title will be released on the heels of this one to finish the trilogy. (That title will possibly feature Dave Schools of Widespread Panic, Mike Mills of REM, and other guests). Musically Green Winter is very different from 2005's Black Hole. Gone are the harsh tones needed for "Black Hole". On first listen "Green Winter" has a much warmer sound. The song "Wrong Turn" is reminiscent of the Allman Brothers and contains impressive guitar and organ solos. "Inventor of Worlds" sounds like Piper at the Gates of Dawn era Pink Floyd and "Turquoise and Yellow" harkens back to the Love Tractor power pop of the late 80's. There are also elements of Funk, Reggae and T.Rex inspired groove, all brought together in LT's original brand of Psychedelia. The band even does a cover version of the Roxy Music song "Three and Nine" from the Country Life record.
Customer Reviews:
Steve in GA.......2006-10-08
Continued evolution and development of one of Athens, GA's greatest bands. Songwriting continues to be highly creative and the musical chops are at a level never seen in the early L.T. days. This disk is true "fusion" (perhaps a bad choice of words!) in that it captures the myriad musical influences that have touched the band members over the years....from prog to rock to punk to dance....they perhaps have invented their own format. It will be interesting to see where these guys continue to go, given the talent and the no-holds-barred approach to exploration of new terrain. One of the more creative disks you're likely to purchase. Highly recommended.
dont call it Love Tractor.......2006-08-14
Decent enough tunes, but without the two crucial founding members who co-created the first five Love Tractor albums, (over a twenty year period no less), the magic of previous era is certainly missing. A Mike Richmond project does not a Love Tractor album make. Check out 'Sky at Night' or previous works instead to see what this once awesome group really sounded like.
Best LT ever ! Absolutely fantastic !.......2006-06-29
I got all Love Tractor's stuff. Every single bit.
This is the best record they've ever done, hands down!
Mike's vocals are up front, the drums are big but don't have that cliche' eighties sound.
The songs are smart. It has a variety of cool grooves, and it totally flows from beginning to end. I have it on
" repeat ", and have been chillin' by the pool to it.
"Saturn Rings" is a fave,"Turquoise" and "Pain" are great too. And I cn start 2 see where the story is going. It was hard to see after not having a record for several years and then just hearing "Black Hole" alone( which was kind of a hard rock extention of "Sky at Night")w/ no explanation that it was the turbulent dark beginning of a 'space trilogy' concept thing. With Green Winter, its starting to make sense. ( Those clever fellows r messing with us ! )
The best thing is that along w/ totally new directions, ("Wrong Turn" is a Derek Trucksish jazzy hippie jam w/ flute) its got elements of all the earlier CDs in it too:
"Turquoise" ( Venus and Spaceship ), "Slow Down" (LT, Cows)Inventor"(Black Hole), "Green Winter" (Sky atNight )
LT has come out of the black hole and have come around the bend...again.
No doubt. This one is destined to be a rock classic.
PART 2.......2006-06-28
This is the second installment in the LT trilogy that started with Black Hole, and you can kind of see the bridge that Mike Richmond and Co. are building here. Green Winter still has the prog touches that were all over Black Hole, but it seems like the band might be sneaking in a bit of the old LT twang. It might be a while before we find out, but here's to hoping that part 3 will be a re-birth of the LT and an advancement at the same time.
great work.......2006-06-28
Though I liked 2005's Black Hole a lot, it is easy to hear that Mike Richmond's new lineup is getting better and better at playing together. This album takes you on a trip, drifting effortlessly through the realms of the earthly and the ethereal, floating through the upper atmosphere and into space with such songs as Saturn Rings, and pulling you back down to earth with such songs as Turqoise and Yellow. I also like the cover of 3 and 9 better than the orginial Roxy Music version. Definitely worth a buy.

Mastered from vinyl?????.......2007-01-09
Listen carefully to the first song, "Buy Me A Million Dollars," and I'm pretty sure you can hear the surface noise of a needle on vinyl. Which you can also hear, almost as clearly, on many of the other songs. The label credits say "Tape transfers by Barry Piacente and Peter Dyer," and maybe Mr. Piacente or Mr. Dyer will read this review. Or maybe Bruce Baxter or Danny Beard can answer this question: Was this record mastered from vinyl? Or is there another reason for the distracting crackles?
Love Tractor were a terrific band. But their longtime label, DB Recs, hasn't done much to honor or sustain the band's music.
It's actually the debut album "Love Tractor" plus the "Cows" EP.......2005-08-19
The instrumental beginnings of Athens, Georgia quirky pop band Love Tractor.
Though the title on Amazon implies this is only the "Cows" EP, it is actually a two-fer reissure combining the Love Tractor debut album "Love Tractor" (1982) with the "Cows" EP.
16 tracks.
It's another great one.......1999-12-02
If you haven't heard "Fun to be Happy" you've really missed out; It's worth purchasing this just for that song. The band The Feelies played it as a cover in some of their shows I caught years ago and it's just as good as the instrumental and up- beat tune "Rudolph Nureyev" from "This ain't no outerspace ship. The rest of the album is also quite good and I believe Bill Berry of REM wrote the song motorcade. And the last song on this cd is an absolutely amazing and good-feeling instrumental that is so awesome -it's hard to describe. Berry probably learned a thing or two from this quartet - that didn't rise all the way to maximum u.s. popularity because they focused on creating the most excellent music not being popular and image-conscious. This band was and still is better than REM- sorry to break the news to you.

Yule Tractor.......2007-03-24
This is a tour de force of an album. Love Tractor presents their own seasonal songs, plus everything from Vince Guaraldi to the Residents(!). Conceptually, it's brilliant--and almost seamless. Keyboard man Billy Holmes more than pulls his weight, showing a jazz sophistication I'd not suspected. He's the dominant instrumentalist a lot of the time. Guitarist/bandleader Mike Richmond doesn't hog the show here, as he lets it be a group effort. I'm a huge Guaraldi fan, so that medley alone was worth the price of admission. In my opinion, the CD is the best of the three recently-issued LT albums. It's a delight in any season. I greatly look forward to "White Mountain," the forthcoming record.
"Greedy dog, gonna have my fun, with a Cadillac and a homemade gun."
Another Green Christmas.......2006-12-01
What makes a Christmas Classic? How many new Christmas albums come out each year? The number is unimportant. Virtually all are given a cursory listen or two, filed away, never to see the light of day until they make the trip to Goodwill. We all turn to the classics for comfort, or to get the spiritual lift of Christmas.
A Love Tractor Christmas album is a surprise, and it's amazingly good. A fantastic song cycle that mixes LT originals with holiday favorites. It's unmistakably a Love Tractor album, but it's appeal is universal. It captures all the joy, excitement, fear and fun of Christmas. It's full of pop culture references. It brings back the memories of Christmas, while it brings a smile to your face.
I've got it in heavy rotation with Mahailia Jackson and Johnny Mathis Merry Christmas. Those albums have been on the Christmas playlist for 40 years
A Love Tractor Christmas.......2006-11-27
As a huge Love Tractor fan since 1989, it's always wonderful to see Mike and the boys releasing new material. This Christmas album, recorded in the middle of their work on their upcoming cd "White Mountain", is a true gift to LT fans everywhere.
Love Tractor's previous two albums, "Black Hole" & "Green Winter" (the first two of a sonic trilogy, with the final installment being the previously mentioned "White Mountain") have been somewhat experimental, and a bit of a departure from the normal Love Tractor sound. Also, the theme of both cd's have been , for the most part, darker and more serious then previous albums. And while i have been enjoying their new sound, it's wonderful to see them going into a decidedly happier direction with this album of 24 Christmas songs. Listening to "Before & After Christmas", the one word that comes to mind, is Joyful. While there are a couple of darker moments ("Toys That Kill", "Jessica"...), the main vibe is all silliness and cheer. Mike Richmond channels Alvin Chipmonk in "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas", and with that song, as with most of the others on the record, you can hear how much fun it must have been to be in that recording studio while they were making it.
The highlight, for me is the "Seven Pieces Of Peanuts Candy" medley, where LT bring back the magic of "A Charlie Brown Christmas". It takes me back to my childhood, and makes me stop and remember Christmas' past.
With "Before & After Christmas", Love Tractor have created a modern day Christmas classic that my family and I will return to, year after year.
More great Love Tractor.......2006-11-17
Love Tractor once again reveals their virtuosity and creative musical talents in this departure from previous Love Tractor recordings. Blending traditional and new, unique creations they show their versatility in sharing their impressions of the holiday season. Serious concerns vie with humorous insights into this season's musical offerings. Definitely worth adding to your Love Tractor collection!
