If you think you've heard Handel's "Ombra mai fu" (known as his "Largo") so often, and in so many different arrangements, and sung by so many different voices, that you can no longer be moved or surprised by it, think again. This CD of Handel arias, mostly from his Theodora or the cantata La Lucrezia, ends with "Ombra mai fu," and as sung by Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, it is so tender, so beautiful, so impeccably shaded, that you'll think you're hearing it for the first time. But that's only four of this disc's 67 minutes---a follow-up to Hunt Lieberson's extraordinarily successful CD of Bach cantatas. There's not a dull or disinterested moment to be heard anywhere. As the violated Lucrezia, Hunt Lieberson alternately rages against the man who raped her and turns her grief inward; the former is terrifying in its intensity, the latter makes us almost feel as if we're eavesdropping. The five arias for Irene, Theodora's friend, confidante, and the upholder of Christian beliefs are all magical prayers or statements of faith, and from Hunt Lieberson, they become real, with each word honestly conveyed and colored. The voice itself is unfailingly beautiful---warm, lush, never forced, agile when necessary---and her breath control is stunning. She is backed ideally by Harry Bicket and The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the string soloists in the ensemble---the viola da gamba player, lutenist, etc.---are as gifted as she is. If you want proof that Handel was a great dramatist with a special gift for communicating emotion, all while listening to sublime sounds, this CD is a must. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars A Legendary Singer........2007-03-07

I simply don't have the heart to review Mrs. Lieberson's works.
If we call Ms. Bartoli a 'great' singer, then the description of 'legendary' more aptly depicts Mrs. Lieberson.
If ever a truly good artist lived, Mrs. Lieberson is one such.
The only singer that could be recalled singing in such style is Teresa Berganza; but still, they are different.
This is one of my favourite interpretators of Haendel. Having been 'treated' by those coloraturas of arias of Haendel's period by Ms. Bartoli and others, I find the singing of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson a great relief - at last, this is what Haendel would want it to be. And I equally enjoy the singing of soprano arias by Mrs. Lieberson - the timbre is warmer, but still with all the shimmer - so different from the dark mushy tones of other celebrated 'lyrical soprano' around.
Don't want to say more. Mrs. Lieberson's leaving last year is too heavy a news for me.

5 out of 5 stars Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's Bach: The mind of God revealed!!.......2007-01-06

These deeply felt performances of two of Bach's most moving cantatas show this transcendent singer's combination of emotional honesty and profound musicality, all combined to reveal the very mind of God through divine redemption from suffering. The disc is to be treasured even more in light of the Ms. Lieberson's recent untimely death from cancer. I'm an agnostic, but this music makes me envious of those who can believe. 5 out of 5 stars Glorious singing to treasure for decades.......2006-07-11

By any measure, America's Lorraine Hunt Lieberson is at least the equal of Italy's premier diva, mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, although she does not have the same superstar status. It is difficult to recall past mezzos with clearer enunciation of English text, (as favoured in nine excerpts from Theodora), the richness of voice, displayed in full-throated fortissimo and sharply contrasted pianissimo of utmost delicacy, evokes fondest memories of the tragically doomed Kathleen Ferrier. Masterfully chosen to display every facet of Hunt Lieberson's consumate command of Handel's dauntingly difficult music, the disc's repertoire - recitatives and linkig arias from the operas Theodora and Serse, and the cantana La Lucrezia - is stunning. An unsung mezzo who makes the senses tingle!

5 out of 5 stars Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson (1954-2006), supreme Handelian.......2006-07-06

I have never heard a voice purer of tone, more flexible in phrasing, and so gorgeously produced in a homogeneous column of sound such as this artist in Handel's repertoire. It is very tastefully sung (unlike a certain person whose name begins with R and ends with enaaay Fleming) and so dramatically touching that one could not help but feel that this repertoire finally has found its instrument. And how sad it is to know that this instrument has passed away two days ago. Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson died two days ago in her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico of breast cancer. It is such a huge loss to the opera world, as she is an artist who is still experiencing the prime of her career. The voice is just so beautiful, the tone so pure, that I lament that we can no longer hear any great roles from this artist. She will be missed.

5 out of 5 stars The Stellar Hunt Lieberson.......2006-03-19

Simply put, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson is one of the very best classical singers alive. She combines vocal elegance and purity with an emotional delivery that raises her above the crowd of technically proficient singers who just don't possess her depth of musical understanding or emotional commitment. Hunt Lieberson is a true artist who resists easy classfication except to say she is perfect in what she does.

If all Sonic Youth albums pretty much sound alike, as skeptics grumble, some Sonic Youth albums definitely sound more alike than others. And Sonic Nurse is one of those. Practically Sonic Youth concentrate, the disc manages to sound like a distillation of the band's career and a promise that they can keep doing this forever. Sonic Youth has trimmed away its more direct hooks, while also curbing its artier indulgences. That isn't to say that melody or noise is absent--especially when it's Kim Gordon's turn to rant on cuts such as "Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream"--but that these elements are carefully balanced and defer to an overall sound that's richer than ever now that newest member Jim O'Rourke has fully integrated himself into the band's gestalt. The mood may be pastoral and domestic, but often, as on "Peace Attack," it's grounded in an undercurrent of concern. --Keith Harris

5 out of 5 stars Gave up, but this renews my faith in good music!.......2006-05-26

I wasn't a huge fan of Murray Street, but this album blows me away. After Murray Street, I thought maybe they had lost their touch and weren't going to retire with a kick. Well I was proven wrong. I was really surprised that they came out with this, I had kind of given up on them since they came out with Murray Street (Sorry Murray Street fans), and then I just looked them up for old times sake, and whadya know - an awesome album. This is as good as it gets as far as good music is concerned. I can't wait for their new album to come out!

5 out of 5 stars Sonic Youth Progressing .......2006-03-18

Another album, experimental as always, but at the same time it is listenable.....The melodies are obscure, consisting of harmonics, and sound manipulation with the effects.deep bass ..the drums are used in complex time signatures, making it stand out and has a new approach making it different than the other albums......chaotic noize and complex melodies... the sound goes on........

5 out of 5 stars A tribute to the electric guitar.......2006-01-27

I liked 2000's "MURRAY STREET" a lot, and was interested to see what direction they would take this one in. I wasn't sure I would like it. I was not disappointed though, and now i think of the two albums as companion pieces, not sure which i like more, though certainly this is a more lengthy, and probably developed record.
PATTERN RECOGNITION - this song just kicks ass, no way around that. i love the riff, the lyrics, kim's vocals, everything.
UNMADE BED - this might be my favorite song on the album, but that would be hard to say for sure. not too much noise or experimentation here, just a very poignant song that is sonically blistering and beautiful, and has excellent arrangement, touching vocals, and amazing feeling. the guitars are just unbelievably great. short, but packs so much into it.
DRIPPING DREAM - i've heard a lot of good things about this song, and i think it was one of the first ones i liked when i first heard this album, but now it doesn't seem as good as i thought. it's good, just.. it gets better.
MARIAH CAREY AND THE ARTHUR DOYLE HAND CREAM - oh, wait.. did they change the name? oh, i see. it's now KIM GORDON. probably afraid of offending ole' miss carey. not a bad song, they played this when i saw them on tour for murray street. it's enjoyable, but nothing amazing.
STONES - this would have to rival UNMADE BED for favorite on the album. the guitar work here just blows my mind, and the bridge and climax of this song just send me into sonic ecstasy. due to misfortunate events, i didn't get to see them tour on this album, but i had REALLY wanted to hear this song live. there is so much intensity in the playing.
DUDE RANCH NURSE - this song is really good as well. i mostly like it for its lyrics, and thought the album should have been called this instead of sonic nurse. kim really grabs you with her vocals in this song, "Let nurse give you a shot!".. it's very erotic in some weird way that only some of us could understand, haha.
NEW HAMPSHIRE - a good song, somewhat autobiographical for thurston, i gather. good lyrics, good vocal, great guitar work once again.
PAPER CUP EXIT - another high point of the album, but i'm not sure what to say about it. love the lyrics, love the guitar work, yadda yadda. i sound like a broken record. this is a lee vocal, and one of his best ones. one of the more political songs on the album, and a bit less obnoxiously so than the last track..
I LOVE YOU GOLDEN BLUE - somewhat in the vein of 'SYMPATHY FOR THE STRAWBERRY,' and although i like the other better, this does a good job. starts out with the noisy part like 'sympathy,' and then goes into a sultry kim vocal. very haunting, beautiful. but also, somewhat hopeful at moments. very good song.
PEACE ATTACK - i really liked this song when i first got the album, and i still think it definitely has a good point, and the climax of the guitars is pretty kickass. it just seems a bit kitsch now.
so overall, this is one of the best albums, like, ever. buy it. steal it. whatever you have to do, if you're a fan of the guitar, get this album.

5 out of 5 stars This nurse can take my temperature anytime!.......2006-01-13

This would be album 13 by the greatest rock band of the last 25 years (that is, "major" albums, as opposed to EPs, live albums, best-of's, SYR releases, side/solo projects and various other sonic effluvia). The band will be eligible for Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame membership in about 2007 (don't start writing that speech yet, Thurston; if Patti Smith and Iggy can't make the cut yet, the Hall is useless anyway) and by now their name can apply more to their actual kids. Normally this means that it would be time to bland out and gently jam their way into senescence. For Our Heroes, this is fortunately not the case.

Upon intitial listenings to "Sonic Nurse," one can be forgiven for thinking otherwise. The songs are generally long (only two clock in under 5 minutes) and some have relatively little--or none--of the free form sonic freakouts that are supposed to be the band's stock in trade. Heck, some of Thurston's offerings here have more than a little of a certain hippy-ish vibe. On "Stones" he even sings "the dead are alright with me." Wait, is that as in the Grateful freakin' Dead? The full lyrics are of course too eliptical to tell for sure, although they seem to be about endurance in the face of adversity and death, so there's a definite acknowledgement of getting older, anyway. Mind you, song titles like "Peace Attack" with its "nature sex" refrain (at first I thought it was the more punkish "nature sucks") can worry even hard-core SY fans. Thurston has described "Sonic Nurse" as a cross between Black Flag's "Damaged" and Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors," and one can argue that it's too much of the latter, but give this one a chance to sink in and you'll be hooked.

Not everything is peace n' love, thankfully. Kim Gordon has turned out to be the band's edgiest songwriter (check out her SYR project with Ikue Mori and DJ Olive), and her contributions kick those jams out the door, down the street, into your house and knock you over but good. The album's opening salvo "Pattern Recognition," about pro corporate trendspotters, buzzes and screams like some of the primo "Dirty" material, and what can be said about the puckishly titled "Kim Gordon and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream"? It's a gossipy, hilarious take on recent events in the life of Mariah Carey ("how was your date with Eminem?/Did he bake you and then forsake you?") with the album's stormiest musical backing that is, in a word, fierce. Kudos also for name-checking free jazz great Doyle as well.

It should also be noted that despite the softer moments, the album is still loads more dissonant than most of what passes for "alt rock" these days. Sure, I love the Arcade Fire as much as anyone, but it's great to have a group that combines that level of songwriting prowess with the musical un-orthodoxy bred of punk, free jazz and experimental musics. Sonic Youth are still more than relevant, my friend--they're necessary. No Wave? Try Now Wave.

5 out of 5 stars Sonic Youth keeps it going........2005-09-08

Wow. Sonic Youth is indeed a band that has racked up the years as they continue to throw out album after album. And still, their magic hasn't faded a bit with Sonic Nurse. Starting off with "Pattern Recognition", this album is loaded with catchy noise songs, an array of sounds accompanied by the amazing vocals of Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon. Despite not having the mainstream, `normal' sound of most music nowadays, the songs on this album, such as "Pattern Recognition", "Unmade Bed", and "Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream", and the like, are, dare I say, catchier than anything you can find on Top 40 radio.

So as a whole, this album really is a pleasure to the ears. If you like noise rock, Sonic Youth, or just good music at all, I strongly recommend "Sonic Nurse". It's one of, if not the best, album of 2004.

2 out of 5 stars Decent interpretation marred by terrible intonation.......2007-04-06

I had great difficulty restraining myself from turning this off when listening to it for the first time, because London does such a terrible job of being anywhere near in tune for much of it. Combined with many missed notes in the brass, messy passagework in the strings, and woodwind playing that seems intent on doing anything BUT creating any sort of phrase, it's doubtful this is worth even the small price Amazon has it listed for.

For a budget recording of this that's actually decent, I'd be much more inclined to buy Naxos' release of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine's version under Andrew Mogrelia.

5 out of 5 stars excellent choice for Romeo & Juliet.......2006-04-14

I am writing mainly in response to Sarman (Sweden). I own the fforte edition and have played this many years on several systems. On Onkyo DR-UN7 dvd receiver driving Epos 22's, the sound is excellent, as it was using Panasonic dvd player, NAD amplifier, and Epos 11's. Previn is one of best interpreters of Prokofiev--after all, he is a Russian born in Berlin. I don't know who could call either the playing or the re-mastering "dull". The natural alternative is Gergiev, re-issued on Philips great 50 recordings at medium price. That is also quite good. I would avoid the others.

Always a reggae classic ... Night Nurse. This CD still manages to deliver surprises. Unhappy Departure Dub is worth a listen. If you like Gregory Isaacs and don't have THIS CD, you must get it.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Roots Reggae.......2007-04-21

The classic from Gregory and a must have for any roots reggae lover.

5 out of 5 stars Cool, Cool Gregory.......2006-12-16

This is the classic 1982 album from the king of cool dub, Gregory Isaacs, remastered and reissued. Backed by the Roots Radics, including Wally Badarou on synthesizers, there's not a tune to dislike on here. Personal standouts though, have always been "Night Nurse", "Cool Down The Pace" and "Sad To Know (You're Leaving)".

There are four bonus tracks added on to the original eight. I don't usually like bonus tracks but these - dub versions of my favourite tracks mentioned above and a 10" mix of "Cool Down..." - work very well and add new value to an already very valuable old classic. Great stuff. I doubt there's anyone out there who's into old-school reggae who doesn't know about Gregory Isaacs or this particular album but just in case...

4 out of 5 stars Reissue of a much-praised MTT debut.......2006-06-26

At 78 min., this is much more generous than other collections that pair Prokofiev's two Suites from Romeo and Juliet. The angry reviewer below is mistaken to accuse Tilson Thomas of composing any transitions of his own devising--he only placed portions of the ballet in dramatic sequence (Prokofiev's suites are in no particular order). This was MTT's first recording with RCA as music director in San Francisco, and when it was released in 1996, the U.S. reviews were rapturous.

Not so the British. The Gramophone grumbled about 'slick efficiency' and 'stickiness.' I think that's not true. The only problems that keep this recording from the highest rank, as far as my ears tell me, are first, the recorded sound. Though wide-ranging and dynamic, the original release tended to be coarse and thuddy (I don't own the reissue at mid-price, but perhaps something has been done to correct this).

The second and more important reservation isn't MTT's fault. Great conductors have already preceded him. Ancerl, Mravinsky, and Mitropoulos are among the old maestros who made outstanding versions of excerpts from the ballet. Among moderns we have had sonic blockbusters from Salonen and Abbado, both of whom dig into the score as MTT does not, and both of whom benefit from the astounding viruosity of the Berlin Phil. As for the complete ballet, versions by Lorin Maazel with the Cleveland Orch. on Decca and Gergiev with the Kirov Orch. on Philips stand out. MTT has a lighter touch than all of the above, which isn't necessarily a bad thing--his avoidance of shmaltz is admirable to me.

In fact, there are stretches here that sound just as good as the best. I can see why other listeners give this recording five stars; in light of so many great ones, I settled for four.

5 out of 5 stars The best available version of this music, hands down........2005-05-19

When Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony released their version of Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet" a decade ago, critics hailed it as the gold standard among all recorded versions of this music. Even now, there seems no reason to revise that opinion. Choosing from among several available suites prepared by Prokofiev himself, Tilson Thomas shaped a version that is both dramatically and musically complete. He and his orchestra do full justice to the bittersweet lyricism and astonishing emotional range of Prokofiev's music. Especially at its mid-range price, this CD is a must for anyone who loves Prokofiev.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2004-08-04

Michael Tilson Thomas is truly one of the great living conductors. The things he has been doing with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra for a decade now have been wonderful. This is one of the conductor's earliest collaborations with RCA Victor in selections from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. Although other reviews have summed up most of my feelings on this CD, I do just want to emphasize MTT's musical vision in creating his own suite. The performance is incisive, dramatic, forceful, and thoroughly pleasing. As always, the SFSO plays with totally conviction and total faith in their music director. As one of the leading Russian experts of today, MTT has created here a fantastic disc.

5 out of 5 stars Diamond Jubilee.......2002-06-24

At last, David Diamond is coming into his own. Diamond has always been one of the finest composers of his generation but, perhaps because he is more austere, he never caught on in the same way that Copland or Barber did. This disc shows what a shame that is. Spanning most of Diamond's career, this CD is a beautifully performed sampling of the range of Diamond's orchestral style. The Psalm shows Diamond in his early modernist mode. Romeo and Juliet and the Symphony are modal in character and beautiful pieces to listen to. They are deeply felt and yet assessible to anyone. Kaddish is more representative of later Diamond works, twelve note without being twelve tone.

I am gratful that Delos has issued these CDs though I am disappointed that the planned entire cycle of Diamond symphonies has seemed to stall. Diamond is a marvelous composer and his cycle is perhaps one of the most important and extensive of American symphony cycles. It would be ashame not to issue them all while Diamond is still alive to enjoy them.

5 out of 5 stars Undeniably American in beauty and spirit, Diamond delivers........2000-03-08

If not for Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony's five volume series of the orchestral magic of David Diamond, close to nothing from Diamond's catalogue in the orchestral genre would appear on compact disc. The performances on this disc and the other Diamond discs are nothing short of phenomenal and capture exactly what his music should be about. However modern-sounding the "Psalm" from 1936 for the "Kaddish" from 1987-88 are, there is a certain fresh tonality and a gift of brilliant orchestration that accompany Diamond's core of music from the late 1930s and the entire 1940s, which includes his Symphony No. 3 (1945) and his incidental music to "Romeo and Juliet" (1947). It is a sound and style all his own, a style genuinely and wonderfully American. Not only should you explore the greatness of David Diamond with this disc, do yourself a favor and purchase the entire five volumes - and don't regret the investment. These terrific performances from the Seattle Symphony are essential to the American classical library.

5 out of 5 stars Abbado's best Prokofiev in great sound.......2005-09-24

I am usually not a particular fan of Abbado in Prokofiev, finding him unsympathetic in the piano concertos with Kissin and a bit tame in Alexander Nevsky. But this relatively generous (68 min.) collection of the best excerpts from Romeo and Juliet is stunning. The viruosity of the Berlin Phil. is astonishing, even for them, and the sound is detailed and altogehter spectcular in its impact. This CD goes right to the head of the list, along with Salonen (also recorded with the Berliners), Gergiev, and Dorati.

5 out of 5 stars I agree 100 %.......2000-08-07

Abbado is a fine conductor, and he excels with Prokofiev's music. I've heard a few others, but this is easily the best.

5 out of 5 stars The best version available.......1999-10-15

Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic's version of Prokofiev's great work outshines any other available version. The sound is clear and the musicality brilliant. The demonstrate that overplayed hits like the Montagues and the Capulets march can be played beautifully, as if one hears it for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction To NWW.......2007-05-18

For those new to Nurse With Wound "Livin' Fear Of James Last or... Joy in the House of Dada!!!" is a great way to get to know the NWW sound.
This compilation gives you a nice over view of their work from 79' to 05'. What I feel is best about this compilation is not only do you get 19 great NWW tracks most of them are over 7 minutes long. Although that isn't uncommon with NWW.

The comp also has a nice variety of tracks.
Such tracks as "Die, Flip or go to India" and "Home is where the heart is/Monument for Perez Prado" are some nice chill-out ambient. "Optical Illusion Pad" and "Intravenous(edit)" have a psychedelic edge and of course there are some great noise tracks like "Cold(edit)" and "The six buttons of sex appeal" and there is even "Subterranean Zappa Blues" which stands out as the most structured track on the comp that seems to scream "Industrial".
Last of all there is the track "I was no longer his dominant(remix)" which I believe is the only unique track on the album. It's a ambient like track with spoken word throughout and last over 11 minutes.

The price is right for the album but I believe new fans will benefit from it more than collectors unless you absolutely gotta have everything NWW.

It's hard to go wrong with the "Cool Ruler." Isaacs's buttery vocals seem to glide over any tune he's handed. When teamed with an all-star reggae band, he's dangerous! Recorded at Bob Marley's legendary Tuff Gong studio, 1982's Night Nurse boasts Wally Badarou and Steely on the keys, Style on drums, Bingy and D. Pinkney on guitar. Flabba handles the bass. The title track, "Material Man," and "Hot Stepper" are some of the sweet and heavy highlights that will please reggae aficionados. --Shane Hunt

5 out of 5 stars Lovers Rock Reggae Classic.......2004-01-07

if you do not have this album buy it immediatly, this is Gregory at his best, an absolute must have classic.
The songs on this album were written while Gregory Isaacs was wrestling with his cocoaine addiction and the passion that you can hear and feel in every song is evident. This album is one of his true masterpieces, each song glides into another and the emotion is each song is truly beyond measure, put this album on with a bottle of wine an fireplace and your girl, say no more.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Roots.......2003-05-24

This CD is a reggae classic and should be a part of any true roots reggae listener's collection. It continues to be his best album since it's original release.

    4 out of 5 stars Smoothness.......2002-12-16

Go to the club and pick up a nice honey. Take her home, light some candles, break out the wine, and slide this album in you CD player. Mr. Isaacs smooth flava will keep the mood right.

This sounds like a nice plan, but if your like me, it will probably never happen. The title track is classic, I can listen to that song every day...staring into space aimlessly, dreaming about that romantic night.

5 out of 5 stars Best Gregory Issacs Album.......2002-03-20

I have Best of Vol's 1 and 2, Call Me Collect, and at least 3 others, this is the best. I first heard it in High School in 93, it was in then, and continues to be one of his best albums. Must bye for the serious Reggae consumer.

IM a huge roots reggae as well as a sublime fan. I listened to the reviews and picked this up. They are correct when it comes to sayin this cat can sing...he can. And although it is an ok album (decent melodies) the cd's music is that high twanged casio keyboard sound. Its recorded at tough gong so the only thing I can think of was that it was his personal taste...in 1982 miami vice mode... do yourself a favor and buy Barrinton Levy's teach me some culture (1983) or Bunny Wailer's blachearted man (1976). put your shades on and dont check the time, cus it's 4:20.
