5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and unique.......2005-12-19

I would like to compliment Alison on her beautiful playing and Dave cooke for his unique and complimentary arrangement of this album. This album brought John Field into the present age and transformed it without destroying it. I am not a clasical boffin but this has sparked my interest.

5 out of 5 stars Artistic perfection.......2005-09-01

Alison Hood plays the nocturnes of Irish composer John Field with a soft, gentle perfection; never jarring or heavy, even in the most difficult pieces. The softly played whistles and pipes lend interest and an Irish touch to several of the selections. Delightful to listen to at the end of a stressful day.

5 out of 5 stars still a great album.......2003-10-14

just played this lovely album after losing it for more than a year and it is still a pleasure to listen to... reminds me of some great times and of a special birthday this month... it will always be special. r

5 out of 5 stars wonderful artist.......2001-01-09

i had the pleasure of meeting this artist recently, and she is just as special in real life as she is on cd. her beautiful playing is only enhanced by her personality which has made listening to this album even more of a pleasure since meeting her. her skill as a pianist is obvious on every track but really comes into its own on 'around the fairy tree', 'a love is lost but not forgotten' and, my favourite by a long way, 'o'er the moor o'er the mountains'. i will continue to listen to this album daily as i have done since last may, and enjoy the memories.

5 out of 5 stars music fan from dublin.......2000-10-16

oh my god...what a lucky day for me when i read the reviews on this album and decided to check it out. this young irish pianist plays the music of field in a arranged in a unique and wonderful way by the well known composer and arranger phil coulter...i'm quite sure the classical snobs will have a "field" day with this one but i hope they have the foresight to look deeper into the beautiful playing on this album and realise that this is the perfect way to bring the music of one of irelands best kept secrets, john field, to a new audience. i look forward to the next album from alison hood. not only does she look wonderful, but she plays like an angel.

5 out of 5 stars Maximum bang for the buck.......2004-03-03

As UFO twofer's go, you just can't beat this one. Two of their most accomplished albums back to back on the same disc. Obsession is an album that even the casual UFO fan will be familiar with, but the surprising "No Place To Run" should not be overlooked. Obsession is notable as Michael Schenker's final UFO album and the song lineup is impressive. UFO classics Only You Can Rock Me, Pack It Up And Go, Hot N Ready and Cherry all resided on the album, and while it wasn't quite as good as previous effort Lights Out, it's pretty close. What makes this twofer better than the No Heavy Petting/Lights Out album is No Place To Run's superiority over No Heavy Petting. Despite the fact that UFO was not anywhere near as influential or popular by the time No Place To Run was released, the album is a scorcher. Paul Chapman's guitar playing allowed them to keep the legend alive when Michael left without so much as a hiccup. This isn't to say that the No Heavy Petting/Lights Out twofer isn't a vital disc in it's own right. As a matter of fact, owning these two UFO twofer's could conceivably be considered an ultimate UFO collection. There would be a few gaps, but nothing that Essential couldn't fill, and lately it comes cheap.

5 out of 5 stars A Pure Classic produced by the Beatles' George Martin.......2001-11-11

This album shows how some decent material can be elevated by a great producer; even w/out guitar-wiz Schenker, UFO manages to put out one of its best albums, with tight melodies and songwriting, Phil Mogg's pinnacle as a vocalist, and Chapman doing an admirable and inspired job taking over for Schenker. It's unfortunate it was all downhill for the band after this release. Buy it, let it soak in, and you'll be pleasantly surprised. The mix is a bit dry and flat for the bass, but it's punchy nonetheless. Letting Go, Mystery Train, This Fire Burns Tonight, No Place to Run, and the powerful Anyday are all standouts.

      4 out of 5 stars Unfairly Slated.......2007-03-12

Imagine my disappointment. My favourite band had just peaked with "Obsession" and produced the best live album ever. Then you hear that the guitar player has left. Yes I was one of the Schenker fanatics. He practiced for hours each day, his playing was fast and melodic, he reproduced the same licks as on the record or better and he never made any mistakes. Absolutely gutted!
I was therefore very disappointed when I saw the replacement Chapman on tour. Here was this chubby English guy with a stupid banana like guitar who didn't play the old tunes well and had a very different style. Not a good image, not impressed.
Paul Chapman got slated back in 1980 when UFO released "No Place To Run" yet it was still a good album. I remember first hearing "Mystery Train" playing in Sundown records in Wolverhampton and thinking "that sounds like UFO?" I immediately bought it (I originally owned the "green" album cover version on vinyl) but still had a fairly blinkered view back then that UFO were rubbish without the Kraut. I like it more now than back then obviously as I am now not so brain dead. Even if the Schenker stuff is better this is a trademark UFO sounding album and you can't say that Chapman doesn't do a good job. It has a heavier more basic rock `n' roll sound with the engine room of Way, Parker and Raymond still superb. Phil Mogg is Phil Mogg, a great rock singer and one of the most under rated in the world. His song writing in conjunction with Pete Way
makes up for the lack of Schenker but I can't help but always think how wonderful would it have been with Schenker's riffs on top. "Lettin' Go", "No Place To Run", "Money Money" and "Anyday" are classic Mogg/Way/UFO tracks and "Mystery Train" is possibly one of the best cover versions of any song I have ever heard. What a superb guitar intro! Well done fat boy!
"No Place To Run" and "TWTWATI" were in my opinion the best Chapman era releases. After these releases the band line up changed like the English weather and the quality of music started to deteriorate fast.

My advice is start with anything Schenker because then you hear the true UFO sound and have a benchmark to compare with. This is highly recommended but you might find it off putting because of the expense. It is not so easy to get a good copy these days without spending a fortune!

5 out of 5 stars The Best UFO album?..........2007-03-03

The NO PLACE TO RUN (1980) shows a positive evolutive step inside the process of the UFO's history band, just because two things: The quality of the global studio sound where it was recorded (diferent of the classic sound of seventies recordings), and the adition of the guitarist PAUL CHAPMAN an englisman who owed to his creative flashy licks, his controled and depured hands technic gave UFO's music a new breath to begin the eighties.

The task wasn't easy, the recording of STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT two years before left really a hard job to do (personally, I like very much the long versions of "Lights Out" and "Rock Bottom"). Following the almost same old formula: heavy drums with Hard Rock electric and acoustic guitar formats, bluesy licks and riffs plus an unusual stronger voice within very powerfull creative songs. A clear example of this, are the tracks "Lettin' Go", "Mistery Train" (with an amazing flashy acoustic Blues lick), "This Fire Will Burn Tonight", "Any Day" (with an incredible bass line) or the enigmatic main theme "No Place To Run". Plus an Interesting instrumental track like "Alpha Centaury" (¿Do You remember the "Unidentificated Flying Object" track from first UFO album?); the Heavy Pop tunes like "Young blood", "Take It Or Leave It" or "Money Money"; and the misterious ballad "Gone In The Night"...

Owed to a almost inexistent media publicity worldwide and the departure of Michael Shenker, the NO PLACE TO RUN recording was a hard attemp to maintain the interest for the band's music in eighties but as years have gone by, the UFO fan will appreciate under another light this remastered masterwork now...

Another extraordinary recordings with guitarist Paul Chapman are: THE WILD THE WILLING AND THE INNOCENT (1981), MECHANIX (1983); and MAKING CONTACT (1984). This guitar man, Paul Chapman, really was at the level of the best England guitarrists, and he helped develop the UFO's music one step ahead to consolidated the name UFO between the respected groups of the rock scene. So Good Luck!...

1 out of 5 stars Why so expensive?.......2006-06-09

How do they expect anyone to buy some of these UFO albums when they are so god damd expensive? C'mon, who the hell is going to pay 60 bucks for one CD with maybe about 35 minutes of music on it? Only goes to show you how greed will keep people away from discoving some of this band's good works, like this. Someone lower this down to 10 bucks, then i will buy. $60 for one CD is the biggest ripp off i'v ever seen in my life. No wonder people are downloading music these days.

      5 out of 5 stars Schenker Who????.......2006-03-09

What has he done since he left? Seems to me UFO and the Scorpions have done just fine without him. I saw MSG in Germany in 83 at the monsters of rock concert. We went to get get beer. Yes he is great, but can you really name a song that he has done since, that compares with any of the stuff he did with UFO or Scorpions? Please UFO kills on this CD. I bought it when it first came out, I discover Micheal much later. MOGG and WAY make this band. Please check out then new DVD Showtime. Vinnie Moore makes it look easy. I love UFO and relize Micheal made his impression, but with Mogg and Way this UFO. BUY THIS CD YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!

No Place To Run (1980.) UFO's eighth album.

Late in the seventies, following the release of the Strangers In The Night live album, UFO faced an uncertain future - the group had just lost guitar virtuoso Michael Schenker, arguably their most important member. Schenker had gone off in his own direction to form a new band. UFO decided NOT to call it a day, and instead got a replacement guitarst named Paul Chapman. Chapman would have some pretty big shoes to fill, rather obviously. Would the group crash and burn without the virtuoso in their arsenal, or would Chapman wow audiences with his own variety of guitar skills? Read on for my review of No Place To Run.

When I heard this album, I was shocked at what I was hearing - and I mean in a GOOD way! A common concensus among many people is that UFO died when Michael Schenker left. I think those people are narrow-minded fools! I'm not going to lie and say that Chapman is better than Schenker (he isn't), but he more than holds his own. He fills Schenker's shoes rather nicely. One listen to this album and I couldn't believe how many people had rejected it simply because Michael didn't play on it. In my opinion, this record is BETTER than some of the Schenker-era albums (not all of them, though.) It's not good enough to be Obsession Part Two, but it's still damn good. UFO albums are often good at showing you the band's diversity and different musical interests, and No Place To Run is no different. From the opening instrumental Alpha Centauri to the American southern-style rock of Mystery Train, the album spares no expense at shelling out rockers that are both diverse and excellent. In the end I think this album is one of the shining jewels in the UFO crown. Give Paul Chapman a chance, people.

UFO's catalogue is NOT readily available in America, which is a shame because they were so much better than most of the other rock bands of their era. Fortunately, there is a British twofer available, which combines this album with its predecessor, the classic Obsession. If you're gonna get this album, get THAT version. You'll get this album (one of UFO's finest) alone with another great one (which IS UFO's finest overall.)

No Place To Run is a GREAT album! I simply can't believe how many people refuse to give UFO recordings a chance if they don't have Michael Schenker playing on them. He was only one member of the band, and his departure didn't hurt them as bad as people say (the band would never be the same, but they'd maintain their overall quality in other ways.) Get this album if you're a fan of the band.
