4 out of 5 stars Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14

I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.

Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.

The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)

The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.

"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.

"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.

"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.

When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.

To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it

5 out of 5 stars The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05

I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection, A LIttle Too Eclectic.......2003-08-19

You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.

5 out of 5 stars What Great Music.......2003-05-11

I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.

5 out of 5 stars super.......2003-04-17

What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

5 out of 5 stars What happened.......2006-09-03

I loved this album as a teenager. Very few people know that it is a story. Charlotte came to LA to be a star and her boyfriend back home was Michael. Michael followed her there to find her and bring her home to make money he started singing on street corners and got discovered. In the meantime she had met Waldo Roderick DeHammersmith who was a pimp. He made her promises of getting her name up in lights but instead got her hooked on dope and working the ho strolls of Hollywood. Michael still loved her and searched for her. Alas it was too late she had O'Ded and he and Roederick shook hands over her grave. Some of these songs were on the original album but I want the first one with the songs Charlotte and Waldo Roderick Dehammersmith on it. If anyone has it please contact me or if you know a way that I can get it. Thank you and enjoy this compilation it is worth spending ones money on I did.

5 out of 5 stars THE MIRACLES....MOTOWN'S GREATEST GROUP...PERIOD!!.......2006-06-11

I dont care what others say about The Supremes,Temptations, or other Motown groups, the MIRACLES were the greatest group to ever come out of Motown.PERIOD!! Why ? for one thing, they were the FIRST MOTOWN GROUP.It was their success that paved the way for all the others. Had they not been successful, there would have been NO MOTOWN,and none of those other groups would have been found fame ,or at least not to the extent which they did. They also had Motown's first million-selling record "Shop Around".THE MIRACLES put MOTOWN on the map. During the company's critical early years- 1959-1964- they were BY FAR Motowns TOP GROUP,(despite what certain reviewers have written}with Top 10 pop hits in 1961,'62,'AND'63,the star atraction of the legendary MOTORTOWN REVUES,and the only group that was bringing any serious money into the company!!Yet,while all the others were inducted,AS GROUPS,into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME,THE MIRACLES were ignored. They chose to induct only SMOKEY.What a shame and insult to Motown's legendary First Group. The TEMPTATIONS ? great singers and dancers to be sure, but what most Temptations fans won't tell you is that 9 of their first 12 hits were actually written by The MIRACLES !! not just Smokey,THE WHOLE GROUP !! Don't believe it ? just look at the writing credits on the Tempts GREATEST HITS album !(How many MIRACLES songs did the TEMPTATIONS write ? Think about it.)THE SUPREMES ? They wouldn't have even GOTTEN on Motown if not for Smokey !!Stevie Wonder? He was discovered by Miracles member RONNIE WHITE !! MARVIN GAYE,THE MARVELLETTES AND MARY WELLS ?Yeah they wrote their stuff too. THE MIRACLES were responsible, either directly or indirectly, for the success of just about EVERY EARLY ARTIST on the MOTOWN LABEL!! In fact ,of the five leading Motown groups ( Supremes, Temptations,4 tops,Miracles,J-5 }The MIRACLES were the ONLY ones that wrote their own material. Hopefully one day ,the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME will induct them ALL, including MARV & CLAUDETTE ,not just SMOKEY , as they did.Want to know why they deserve it? Just listen to this CD.Then read the writing credits. It will prove that SMOKEY wasn't the ONLY serious talent in this group !!

5 out of 5 stars The Miracles: Music you never grow tired of.......2004-08-08

This album is a great collection of classic " Miracles" tunes
after the Smokey era. It still proves that this is music that
you can never outgrow or leave behind. I would highly recommend
it to any diehard "Miracles" fan even if you loved this group
before Smokey left. Billy, Pete, Bobby and Ronnie still carry
on the Motown magic, 1970's style.

4 out of 5 stars LIKE ALBUM.......2004-04-30

4 out of 5 stars really good complialtion.......2004-02-02

5 out of 5 stars Sir Charles Jones strikes a chord.......2004-12-10

I first heard of Sir Charles about 2 years ago. Everybody in Memphis and Mississippi was talking about "Is Anybody Lonely". I got the album and fell in love with it. I've seen him in concert 3 times and he puts on an excellent show. The most amazing part is his age. Who would have thought a man so young could really sing the blues. The album is a masterpiece and I can't wait for the next one.

5 out of 5 stars best of best.......2003-10-15

5 out of 5 stars On the real.......2003-04-24

Sir Charles is the best blues singer I heard. I went to one of his concert and let me tell you the brotha got skills. If you listen to his songs, you can relate to them. I know I can. I'm so happy to see somebody from Mississippi do something positive with his life, he not letting his talent go a waste, he using what God gave him. Sir Charles I hope him the best in his music. Just Keep God first and don't forget where you come from.

5 out of 5 stars "Falling in Love" is a classic!.......2007-07-04

I bought this album for "Falling in Love" alone, and I give it 5 stars accordingly. To the other reviewer (L.A. Scene) who spent paragraphs telling us he is not a fan of Estefan, I say: If you cannot find a latin influence in a song like "Conga", then you need to keep your opinions to yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Primitive Love CD.......2006-11-05

I have all of the cassette tape of Gloria &Miami sound Machine. I love there music. I decide to purchase the CD's when one of my tapes broke. I am very happy with the cd just has I am happy with my tape.

2 out of 5 stars This Album Misses the Mark.......2005-10-22

The Miami Sound Machine originally started out as a band that did their recordings in Spanish. It would not be until the 1980s when the group would officially "crossover" into English Speaking albums. Their first attempt at crossover was the 1984 album "Eyes of Innocence" that produced a song called "Dr. Beat" that gained some notoriety in Europe. It would really be their 1986 follow-up album, "Primitive Love" that would propel the group, and most notably their lead singer Gloria Estefan to superstardom. I can't say that I am a fan of the Miami Sound Machine or Gloria Estefan - because I'm not. However, I do like a Latin influence in pop music, so I figured I would go deeper into this album and see if there was anything that would change my mind. With a couple of exceptions, there was little that changed my mind.

The overall problem I have with this album is that I really don't get a good sense for the Latin influence on this album. Perhaps I am being hard on the Miami Sound Machine because it's quite possible that they didn't intend to make an English Speaking album with a Latin influence. However, even if "Primitive Love" was an album done by a non-crossover artist, I think I would still be quite disappointed with this album. I found this album to be reminiscent of early 80s pop with plenty of synthetic "early 80s" style music as a major element.

I also must admit that I am not a huge Gloria Estefan fan. Today the term "Diva" is used to describe a great female vocalist. While I do think Estefan does an admirable job on vocals, outside of a couple of songs ("Words Get in the Way" and "Surrender Paradise") - there really isn't much that makes me consider Estefan a true "Diva". And while I'm still not a fan, I think the argument can certainly be made that Estefan's later work may have put her into the "Diva" category. It's just that I don't feel that this album contributes to help her elevate to that level.

I must admit, looking at the timeframe of the release of "Primitive Love", the success of this album really surprises me. It was in the mid-1980s, that the pop music landscape was beginning to move to a more "natural" guitar-laden sound. Many artists that recorded Synth-Pop songs in the mid 1980s soon began to struggle maintaining commercial success in this timeframe. Yet, somehow the Miami Sound Machine did manage to succeed and overcome this. The only reason I can think of is that CBS Records was smart in how they released the singles - they focused on the singles that did not seem to fit the early 1980s mold.

The song that propelled the Miami Sound Machine to pop stars would be the song "Conga". When this was released as a single, I wasn't too impressed with this song. Sometimes a song will grow on me the more I listen to it. Unfortunately this was not the case with "Conga". Yes this song has a Latin influence, but to me it really doesn't capture me. I guess the bottom line is I feel that this is an overrated track.

As for the other singles that were released I actually found them much more enjoyable. "Bad Boy" is probably my favorite of these tracks. I wouldn't say that "Bad Boy" is a total Latin song. In this song, I hear Latin elements mixed with some conventional pop elements. I happen to like the way that the horns are used in this song. I also think that that there is some creative use of percussion and guitar work in this song. "Words Get in the Way" is one of the tracks where I do think Gloria Estefan's vocals dominate the song. This is the one song on the album written by Gloria Estefan - and it's really well-written. The song deals with a woman singing about the end of a long-term relationship. This is a soft melody - not much of a Latin influence and it's really carried by the vocals. Vocals also play a nice role on "Falling in Love". This song has more of a conventional pop-feel. On this particular song it isn't really Estefan's vocals, but some of the outstanding background vocal harmonies on the chorus that give this song a good feel.

The two worst songs on the collection happen to be the first two songs. "Body to Body" is one of those songs that has an early 1980s feel. However, it's not even a good early 80s song - it is very synthesizer-heavy and way overmixed. I also didn't hear much of a Latin influence in that song. While the next song, "Primitive Love" has a slight Latin influence, I still found this another song with an early 80s feel that was overmixed. The bottom line is that the title-track isn't a very good song either.

There are some other songs with an early 80s feel that are better. "Mucho Money" is also a song with an early 80s feel. "Mucho Money" also does a better job at integrating the Latin influence with the 80s sound. "Movies" is a song that has less of a Latin feel, but still maintains that 80s influence. The chorus almost reminds me a bit of Dan Hartman's "Instant Replay". Next to "Bad Boy", perhaps the best track on this collection is "Surrender Paradise". In a way, this song almost has more of a South Pacific feel to it. Yes there is a Synthesizer element in this slow song, but this is one of the tracks whether Estefan's voice really shines. I'm surprised this song didn't get more airplay - it is very good.

Overall, the poor early 80s style music and not the depth of the Latin influence were too much for me to overcome. This album has its moments, but overall is a disappointing.

1 out of 5 stars OMG THIS IS CHEAP MUSIC.......2005-03-06

CONGA is now a classic latino crossover, but do not represent the entire hispanic comunitty. This sophomore album by the Miami Sound Machine, was like a rehearsel one. The tracks that didn't hit the top 10 a pure fillers, and the ones that did like BAD BOYS(the most digeastable one) and WORDS GET IN THE WAY( a ballad that falls into the oblivion) are so dated, is most be said that DR. BEAT was more clever than any of the songs feauture here. Not worth it. Buy the best album of Gloria wich is in fact 1998's Gloria!.

5 out of 5 stars Primitive Love (1985) Miami Sound Machine.......2004-07-16

After the failed success of their 1984 album, Eyes Of Innocence, Miami Sound Machine went back into the studio one year later and released their 1985 album, Primitive Love. This was the album that got them the stardom they were longing for. And this is the album that is my favorite. There are so many great songs on this album, that every Gloria Estefan fan should listen to it constantly.

BODY TO BODY
A song that I could listen to, but not constantly.

PRIMITIVE LOVE
This is much better than Body To Body. Great arrangements, great vocals. It's just great all around.

WORDS GET IN THE WAY
The first single from the album. This song is what made the band famous and is one of my favorites. The song is also my mother's favorite. This one just take me back to my childhood days.

BAD BOY
The second single from the album. I love this one because of it's catchy lyrics, it's catchy harmonies and melodies, and it's catchy beats and arrangements. This one should sound familiar to everyone if you all saw the hit film, Three Men And A Baby.

FALLING IN LOVE (UH-OH)
The third single from the album. This yet another one of my absolute favorites. I can't turn on off this album without listening to this song.

CONGA
The fourth and final single from the album. This song will remain a classic song for all eternity. It has been doing so ever since its release. It has appeared in many films over the years, but the only movie I know this song appeared in was The Birdcage.

MUCHO MONEY
I get a kick out of this one because of it's lyrics and it's sound. My favorite part of the song is when you hear Gloria sing, 'E-bah, E-bah, E-bah'!

YOU MADE A FOOL OF ME
I love this one because of how soothing it sounds.

MOVIES
Not bad.

SURRENDER PARADISE
Not bad.

This is one of the best albums ever made and if you are a Gloria fan, then you should have this album.

4 out of 5 stars Solid disc.......2007-01-10

So far from what I've seen the Genitorturers have yet to equal their first great album, though some tracks off Sin City were pretty strong. This is a solid disc, and if you generally like what Gen and the boys do, you'll like this; it won't convert any who don't like them in the first place, but it will please fans of the group.

4 out of 5 stars good but...........2006-09-04

it will never top 120 days, their first release. the only song i listen to is touch myself. it sound a little too electronic for my taste. kinda like a lords of acid/republica sound. you can't beat the first release.

5 out of 5 stars This cd rocks.......2006-02-24

This cd has the cover "Touch Myself" on it as well as other songs remixed with the help of such bands as K.M.F.D.M. and Razed in Black. All the songs on here are hard core. My only complaint is that there are only 8 songs on here.

5 out of 5 stars Machine Love Indeed.......2005-08-23

I love this album the minute I listened to it. Of course, that was two years ago, but still one of my favorites that I miss dearly. I like music like this that'll let you get your freak on as well as seeing girls getting freaky with it too. If you can, when you buy this get Sin City too. And while you're at it, buy the upcoming DVD of the same title. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm sure I won't be disappointed when I do. Jessica Alba, need I say more?

5 out of 5 stars Machine Love.......2004-08-17

Another fabulous release from Gen & crew. I've seen these guys live & there really is no comparison. A change from 120 days, but still a super album that can be listened to over & over (it's on my hard drive so when I ruin one copy, I can make another).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Gene Eoddenberry's Andromeda is sirie and OST is the best and took that why is my favorite soundtrack from faverite scifi sirie

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2005-08-23

If you like TV/movie soundtracks, and Andromeda, you should like this. Good Andromeda music, also contains the two different opening themes. (Remember, it is a TV soundtrack so it contains synthesized music.) I enjoy listening to it, and can have it playing in the background at work too without it being bothersome.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Soundtrack.......2005-02-01

The soundtrack to Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda is one of the best sci-fi soundtracks to come out in quite a while. I found the music exciting, interesting and intriguing, and on several tracks simply exhilarating; composer Matthew McCauley really does take you on a musical roller-coaster, from the stately High Guard Theme to Dylan's theme to Trance's and Beka's themes to the Nietzschean Attack theme. McCauley musically explores each character, underscoring and enhancing their unique personality. The album has kind of a New Age-ish sound to it on several tracks which gives it a mysterious ethereal quality. A great score for a great series. Composer Matthew McCauley certainly knows his stuff. This is just great music whether or not you're a fan of the show!

5 out of 5 stars love it.......2003-08-08

Great presentation of soundtrack. Interesting instrumentals for even those who are not familiar with the show. I listen to it practically all the time!

5 out of 5 stars A great television score!.......2002-03-27

First off, this is a television soundtrack, not a movie soundtrack-- many of the "instruments" are synthesized. Okay, that aside, this is a great album! It's been a long time since I've heard so many different character themes on a tv soundtrack. From the Heroic "Dylan Hunt", to the brooding "Rev Bem and Magog" music, to the outright ominious "Neitzscheans" themes, this album is a winner. It's nice that the producers also included Alex Lifeson's "March of the High Guard" theme from season 1, which is regrettably no longer used on the show. The music on this album takes you on a emotional roller coaster-- from mysterious, to brooding, to heroic and back again. High recommended for fans of both scores and the television series alike!

5 out of 5 stars Good single, even better B-side! .......2004-11-29

Girls Aloud have been on a roll this year. Earlier this year, the electro-pop "The Show" captivated (or at least got the attention of) nonfans, and fans alike. Months later, they released "Love Machine" a concoction of retro, 60's style music blended with a pop sensibility.

Unlike their previous single, "The Show", which sounds like pop music from the future, "Love Machine" seems to have went back in time. With it's retro-60's style music, "Love Machine" is a catchy and infectious tune that can easily be stuck in people's heads.

That is not to say however, that it's for everybody. If you're looking for modern pop music with a sleek sound, then "Love Machine" isn't for you. However, it is for those who are looking for good pop music, that sounds like it went back in time. Or if you're looking for good pop music in general.

Gravitas' remixes haven't really impressed me. "Love Machine" is no exception. It takes a new twist on the song into a "disco" style, however, it doesn't do the song justice. It's not a club stomper however, the remix does give the song a different style after hearing the original so many times.

The real gem of the single is surprisingly, the b-side "Androgynous Girls." It has the sleek sensibility of "The Show" however, it still sounds retro and "groovy" like "Love Machine." It's catchy, infectious, and has warranted more plays than "Love Machine."

Included are the video, and the karaoke video in which you can sing along with the video on your PC.

Overall, it's a good single, and it's worth it mainly because of "Androgynous Girls" and this b-side isn't included on their full length album that is released on November 29th.
