This ablum is great all the way around from the tempo, lyrics and instramentals to the tone and depth of each successive track. I definitely reccomend this to anyone who is a fan of The Rolling Stones, White Stripes or The Black Keys.

Heartbroken Smiles.......2007-06-21

This is, in my opinion, the best album put out by the Kings of Leon so far. It's right in the sweet spot between their early, gritty, garage rock days and their current, polished, art rock style. The songs have a strange poetic truth to them, going between stories of growing up, breaking up, incest, and even erectile disfunciton with grace and a unique, catchy sound.

If you're interested in the Kings of Leon, but don't know which album to pick, this is the one. I recommend all of their albums, but this is far and away their most inspired record to date.

KOL's Best.......2007-05-12

This album didn't grab me right away, but I liked it more and more as I listened to it. Now I consider it one of the rare albums that really does deserve 5 stars. For the full 5 I think every song should be good, and several of them should be great and that's the case here. I'm not all that fond of KOL's 1st or 3rd albums, but all the planets aligned for this one and they do their own unique thing just right.

How good is this album????

I heard Youth and Young Manhood at my local coffee shop a few years ago and went out and bought it straight away. I liked it, but this is better...way better. I love listening to a band that perfectly mixes lyrics, music and attitude.

To the reviewers who gave this 1 star because Caleb's voice is crap....get a life....if you place that as one of your criteria go and listen to Mariah Carey....his vocals and the raw guitar sound are one of the best musical matches I have heard in a long time and more power to these guys for keeping it real...

Now the tracks....Slow Night So Long, Taper Jean Girl, Milk, King of the Rodeo are all fantasic songs but pound for pound "The Bucket" is their best song recorded to date. The rattling drum beat in the chorus makes this one of my fav tracks.

Really there are no weak songs, it is just one of those rare albums that hits the mark in so many ways. My only regret is that I missed seeing them when the toured last year especially considering they held an impromptu gig at my local.....Oh well next time around...

If any album set Cinderella apart from the legions of good-time pop metal bands that cluttered the rock landscape in the late '80s, this one was it. Giving full weight to the blues-inflected hard rock of the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith, they turned out what was probably their finest effort, with catchy songs like "The More Things Change" (the video featured appearances by personalities as diverse as Little Richard and Shelley Duvall) and "Shelter Me." While Tom Keifer's screeching, nails-on-blackboard voice doesn't appeal to all tastes, it doesn't overshadow the quality of the material or the band's overall performance. --Genevieve Williams

Third Time Certainly Not A Charm........2007-07-16

I was sadly dissappointed with this album and only give it 3 stars. Perhaps it was the fact that I've listened to their first 2 albums for so long, but overall this album just doesn't get it done in my opinion. Give me the hard rocking Cinderella of old any day vs. this lightweight version. The title track, Heartbreak Station is indeed a great song but other than that the rest of the album just didn't do much for this hard rock fan. Many of the songs vocals are also very muffled and aren't nearly as clear as Cinderella's previous 2 albums. Here's hoping "Still Climbing" is much better. Despite the fact that it was a letdown, it's still much better than anything being released in today's hip-hop, bubble gum pop, whiny world of music.

2.5 stars, didn't get them to the next level, but interesting stuff........2007-03-07

Another solid effort by Cinderella that once again failed to raise them to the level of their buddies Bon Jovi. And that is in some ways unfair as their debut and it's follow up had more honest grit than just about all of Bon Jovis albums combined. Not that they were great by any means but they were from a beer swillin' heavy rocker headspace, even if the image was that of a shameless hair metal band in search of cash and girls.

Heartbreak Station sees a considerable shift for the boys (now looking more like boys with each album) and this is portrayed upfront with The More Things Change. In with the blues, in with a less hysterical image, in with some slide guitar and honky tonk stylings. Each track feels totally as if it came from a different band to that which gave us the first two Cinderalla albums with the possible exception of the aforementioned track. A lot of jangly guitars, a more rustic feel and year another simplistic production job aid the band in this, what amounted to an effort by the band to be taken more seriously. The same trick was tried, with varying degrees of success, by a number of bands in the late 80's/early90's and given their musical track record Cinderella were perhaps more deserving of success. What shouldn't be forgotten is that this shift to more blues/country songs with open structures happened prior to grung. It came out in 1990 so this album deserves credit for NOT being a change in direction due to panic at impending oblivion.

Of course that doesn't make the music great. Whether you but into the new Cinderella will depend on how receptive you are to an ex-glam/hair rawk rock band suddenly "getting" a more laid back style of the blues and going into a studio where the radio was glued onto an alt-country station. And then a few months later coming out with this album.

This album scored OK with a bunch of critics at the time (Kerrang magazine etc) but the bands fan base either weren't up to the change in direction or had grown up and gotten jobs by 1990. Which is a pity as the band pulled off the change fairly well, even if by halfway through the album your hankering after a numbskull rocker like Hell on Wheels or Somebody Save Me. Which is probably why the album stiffed so badly - fans of their previous genre are more likely to slit their wrists listening to this maudlin stuff than tell their friends to go out and buy it.

One of the best rock albums ever!.......2007-03-05

Cinderella, is in my own opinion top 1 or 2 of the very best 80's hard rock bands ever, they rank right behind Poison and just a tad better than Bon Jovi, Skid Row and Ratt. These guys came out of Philadelphia in 1986, with their first effort, Night songs, then 2 years later came, Long Cold Winter. Then in early 1990 Cinderella decided to change their sound a little bit, adding more blues and a little less pop to the mix, the result is, Heartbreak Station, their best effort to date.

The More Things Change 10-10 This song really gets the album off to a rockin' start one of their very best.

Love's Got Me Doin' Time 10-10 This track has kind of a funky vibe to it, it has to grow on you, but after it does its a one of a kind.

Shelter Me 10-10 This is my very favorite Cinderella song. I really can't say why, it is just an up-tempo rocker with kind of a 70's rock vibe.

Heartbreak Station 10-10 This is a pretty good power ballad, one of the best out of the pop metal scene. It's slow and very catchy, no disappointment here.

Sick For The Cure 8-10 Now I am not really sure why, but this song is not one of my favorites on the album. I gave it an 8 out of 10 because it's a pretty decent rocker. Who knows you might love it.

One For Rock & Roll 10-10 Awesome song all the way around, another one of my favorites off the album.

Dead Man's Road 10-10 This song reminds me alot of Bon Jovi's Blaze of Glory. Sounds like something you would see on a cowboy movie.

Maker Your Own Way 8-10 Another song thats not great, but not bad.

Electric Love 8-10 Good, but not great.

Love Gone Bad 8-10 9-10 Pretty good song, typical 80's rock song.

Winds Of Change 10-10 Last, but not least, very good track.

Overall one of the best cd's of the era, if you like 80's pop metal and don't already have this album, get it you will not be disappointed.

Tom Keifer, very good songwriter and performer.......2006-12-13

This album has a very good songwriting like Long Cold Winter, maybe a little step behind at some points but even higher in some others. Personally I find that "Heartbreak Station" is a very touching ballad, a simple song that is just that perfect song everyone dream to write once in his life. I'm happy for this album even only for this song, but it is not the only good one for sure here! Cinderella has been a very talented but unlucky band just like all the one from that era .. you know how the story went. Grunge killed a lot of them. Hair years saw a lot of wonderful bands and musicians instead and Cinderella made no exception, they had their own personality cut out from their influences (Aereosmith, Bon Jovi and Stones), very good songwriting skills and musicianships that found their full expression in Long Cold Winter and in this album. I loved Cinderella for Long Cold Winter mainly because I had those first two albums when I was a kid in the eighties, then I discovered this album in a used cds shop the other day and I did buy it. I can say it is the perfect follow to LCW and a very good rock album. There are the trademark Keifer's power ballads and very memorable rock blues anthems. Labels are really something stupid. Today hair metal bands are considered untrendy and dated.. bah. I still love them and consider them (some of them like Winger, White Lion, Ratt, Rough Cutt, Bon Jovi, Dokken, Harem Scarem, Guns & Roses, Def Leppard, Danger Danger, Tesla, Firehouse, Stryper, David Lee Roth band and many more) some of the best bands USA produced in rock territories (they were "Van Halen sons" in the end). Think about the music not about how long were the hair of the guys in those days ... Tom is a very good songwriter at heart. I know and I knew it in the eighties. Thanks for the music Tom I really appreciate it! Sorry for what you went through in the past with your voice! Rock on!

Musically, Their Best Album.......2006-01-03

Cinderella started as a hair band, then became more blues/rock oriented, but this album is the final step to blues/rock kings. This album is great. This is definately a step up from Long Cold Winter. If you enjoyed Long Cold Winter, you will love this album.

A great introduction to Laurie Anderson.......2006-02-05

I think this is probably Laurie Anderson's single best work, although there are some great songs and stories on her other albums. But there's usually something on one of those other albums that I'm quick to hit the next button with, whereas every song on Mister Heartbreak is fascinating and interesting. Anderson's music is quite experimental, from the noises used in the production to the structure of the "songs," and there are a fair number of failures in her recorded output which makes the lack of the same on this album unusual.

I inevitably connect Anderson's sound to the minimalists of classical music, for at the same time I discovered Anderson I was also immersed in Philip Glass, an avid experimentalist in his own right. Both composures use repetitive structures upon which they overlay new sounds or slowly modify from the repeating pattern to discover a melody. However, Anderson's repetition is mostly through rhythmic patterns rather than repeated melodic passages. To break up the repetition are unusual sounds wrung out of Adrian Belew's guitar and the off-kilter percussion of David van Tiegham.

But the real reason I enjoy this album is for the lyrics, which were repeated constantly by my circle of friends in college so much that they quicklyl became catch phrases, were you only had to start a passage and everyone knew what you were referring to. Anderson's skill with language is that she is able to distill a phrase out of its common usage and make it sound new and fresh, partly through the phrasing, akin to how William Shatner would make each word a separate sentence. In "Blue Lagoon," it's the simple passage of "I got your letter. Thanks. A lot." By breaking the phrase in this way, you start focusing on each word until it becomes unfamiliar, like when you stare at a word so long that it ceases to look like that word or seems to be misspelled.

The themes here range from the literary (from the lifting of passages from Herman Melville's Moby Dick in Blue Lagoon to the Pynchonian "Gravity's Angel") to the mythological ("Kokoku" and "Langue D'Amour"). My favorites have to be the bracketing songs, "Sharkey's Day" and "Sharkey's Night," the latter with a guest vocal by William S. Burroughs, whose gravelly-voiced delivery is a perfect counterpoint to Anderson's silkier tones.

I can't necessarily recommend Laurie Anderson, because like most experimental artists, she's one that takes quite some time to get used to. However, as an introduction to her work, Mister Heartbreak is likely the most accessible and repeatedly listenable.

This, along with Home of the Brave, is probably my favorite Laurie Anderson cd. Using state-of-the-art sythesizers and sonic technology she manages to create an amazing collage of images and scenes which treat the mind to its own image scene. Sharkey's Day, Blue Lagoon, Kokoku and all the songs infact work together to take the listener to a place which is regal in its sight and pungent with its scene.

Until I arrived here, I had almost forgot about this album.
Unbelieveable. Nightmares of having to suddenly pack-up and leave the dream called California in a really bad time and suddenly go to Mom's (If I can make it here, I'll make it anywhere). I lost that album somwhere.
It lives, it breathes, it's alive and William S. Burroughs is also. I moved to FLA but now I'm here, and the sun is going down like a big bald head, in Redondo Beach, LA and living in that dream which is this masterful little piece.

Still kicking after all these years.......2001-08-29

Laurie Anderson's work has ranged from the tired to the sublime. Mr. Heartbreak is a collection of 7 of her best works on one album and the whole is mesmerizing. Laurie's staccato enunciation of prose is at times punctuated by Adrian Belew's guitar, at others softened by Peter Gabriel's warm tones. Excellent Birds, which features Gabriel, remains one of my favorite songs by either artist. Laurie Anderson has often blazed new trails, but as others have trod in her footsteps some of her efforts have been rendered a bit cliched. More than 15 years after its original release, Mr. Heartbreak is still so fresh and vibrant that it remains in my regular rotation.

RHYTHM, BEAT AND LOGIC.......2001-08-03

African rhythms and percussions predominate Laurie Anderson's "Mister Heartbreak", an urban spiritual odyssey through a 'West Side Story'-like cityscape that recalls Brian Eno and David Byrne's "My Life In The Bush of Ghosts", and Peter Gabriel's (he guests and produces on the album) "Security" as Congo conscious Western music. The African instrumental intro to the opening track, "Sharkey's Day" sounds just like the opening, rallying whistles of street gangs 'The Sharks' and 'The Jets' in the Broadway musical, "West Side Story" and the album seems to use that Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim score as a blueprint for a radical musical concept of city sidewalks and African pathways cutting across the imagination like a shark on the beach. In other words, it's got a great beat, you can slow-dance to it and it's way cool.

Epitome Of Emo... Bwahaha!.......2007-02-20

This is Lori here, not mein fazhah. Okay, so everyone here's been saying that Frank Iero has a great voice. Now, I love Frankles as much as the rest of you, but let's get serious-- the sweetie's better at screaming than singing. His voice is super-whiny, and he just sounds like my nine-year-old brother. Despite that fact, I love the album so much! I'm always telling my friends who think they know emo to go check out Pencey Prep, cause they're the EPITOME OF EMO. But in a good way. And besides, what other band could get away with a song called 'Fat and Alone'?

I am a huge My Chemical Romance fan and when I found out that Frank Iero used to be in a band, I immediatley went to Google. I searched for it and listened to it and wanted it right away. Frank Iero's voice isn't any Gerard Way, but it's something and I love it!!!

If you've finally figured out that rhythm guitarist 4 MCR Frank Iero used to front a band called Pencey Prep and want to know what they sounded like, buy Heartbreak in Stereo. Once you get over the initial shock that it's Frank singing and not Gerard, you'll get into the strange lyrics and the screaming in almost evry song.!

In their inimitable 1958 Wayne touring bus, stuffed with flea-market couches and a propane stove, Fred Eaglesmith and the Flying Squirrels have spent the last decade descending from Canada to play any venue that will have them. These two discs generously capture the fury and fun of their live gigs, despite the track fade-outs and the absence of Eaglesmith's hilarious between-song storytelling. The set includes the previously unrecorded (for good reason) novelty tunes "White Trash," "Big Hair," and "How's Ernie?" yet another car song "Benchseat Baby," but also "John Deere" and "Carmelita," rare gems that stand with the best of Eaglesmith's working-class portraits. He growls and snarls through every line, while his cohorts--including human salvage yard Washboard Hank, distortion-pedal-loving mandolinist Willie P. Just what you probably think you don't need--yet another two-disc thematic song suite on an indie label. "Ralph's Last Show" (named for the bandmate whose green card has since expired) sounds like the worst sort of treacle in theory--songs about trains, old cars, old loves, even, so help me, one about an old dog. In reality these are beautifully observed, sometimes sweet, often hilarious songs written by a journeyman Canadian folkie whose voice has just the right amount of road- (if not world-)weariness in it. All that and an Appalachian murder ballad that sounds more authentic than anything Gillian Welch has come up with. Docked a notch only for spreading two 40 min. sets across two cds when both would've easily fit on one.

Torn between 4 and 5 stars........2001-09-09

FOUR car songs, three train songs, a tractor song, and a bunch of awesome non-machinery songs too... I'd label it country/folk with an edge, with tons of fiddling in the background. Unless you hate that kind of music, what's not to like?

Well, it comes in a cardboard sleeve with no lyric sheets, and parts of it wouldn't play in my finicky old CD player, probably because the CDs got a little warped in transit because of the cheesy packaging. (The lyrics are pretty clear in the songs, so not having a lyric sheet isn't a crisis. The songs I could play on the old player were good enough to justify purchasing a new CD/DVD player the day after I got the CD, which plays both disks just fine.) "Flowers in the Dell" is a little creepy. And after a while the album's overall vocal and musical roughness got on my nerves, so I had to play something else for a bit.

He's a pretty good guy.. with a great cd.......2001-08-30

I've seen quite a few live Fred shows, and this cd captures the band at its musical peak. Included are some very new songs, some standards, and some revived classics. The best news is that you can really hear Washboard Hank, who's been a major force in the live shows but sadly missing from the recordings. Pay close attention to Hank's excellent dobro work!
On the down side, the cd doesn't include the between-songs stories, quips, and banter that make a Fred Eaglesmith show a truly a wonderful experience.

TOP TEN FOR YEAR 2001.......2001-06-19

This is cd is more acoustic than his last cd's, you'll have to go back to "Paradise Motel" for the same feeling. The cd is full of raw energy, and Eaglesmith as always is amazing. It's his best cd (from the ones I've heard) and one of the best cd's this year.

Just one problem, at close to 82 minutes it's too short for 2 cd's, it could have fit into one (- some applause and maybe one track less). It's yr money so you better know it before you order.

Pop punk so sweet it's bad for your health! If your not a fan of pop punk stay clear of this. This is bubble gum pop punk to the core and makes no apologizes for it. The songs are so fast, short, catchy they'll stay in your head for days. And if you're a straight guy I dare you to try and not fall in love with Hallie or Chelsea. I don't think there are any tracks that stick out in my mind as being the best songs on the album because the CD just flows together so well. Put it in and you'll be having so much fun you'll never stop to notice. The only bad thing I might say about this album is Hallie kind of makes up words to make lyrics sound a like, like what the hell is a cell phona? However this just adds to the cuteness of it so it's not really a big deal at all. So buy this album before you die! And if you like this I also recomment Mikey Erg's (the drummer) other band The Ergs or just about anything on Whoa Oh Records is worth checking out.

What was Century Media/Nuclear Blast thinking!!???.......2007-02-22

They signed a sissy pop/rock/glam band along with some severe heavy metal bands. Known for having bands like Dimmu Borgir, Gorgoroth, Behemoth, Despised Icon, In Flames, Arch Enemy, well the list goes on people. I didn't know of these wussies until I bought Metal for the Masses Part V. It kind of aggravted the crap out of me that they even put this bands music video along with videos from, All Shall Perish, Celtic Frost, Scar Symmetry, God Forbid, and Fireball Ministry on the DVD to that compilation. I really wish I could rate this a negative 5 stars because it's that cheesy and stupid. I can only see this band as just another pop group trying to be teen hearthrob icons for bubble gum yuppies! Hell, my wife thought this band was stupid and she loves dance music(Christina Aguilera, Ace of base) and mainstream rock (Oleander, Stone Sour). I recommend boycotting all of American Heartbreak's work because it's just not worth even a second of time. This would make a great soundtrack in a torture chamber along with Kid Rock, and boy bands! I'm glad I could save a few lives!

I always say if there are at least three songs on a CD that I like then I feel like I got my moneys worth. This album is the opposite. I have a hard time finding 3 songs I don't like. This is just a great rock album, no question. I bought this album after hearing Michael Butler and the Rock and Roll Geek Show podcast.

The fifth collection culled from the annual VH1 Divas specials is a little too genteel. Maybe because the producers are now old hands at pairing up pop's biggest female singers, and they know how to avoid potential fireworks. But it's the fireworks that make these records sizzle. Who can forget Elton John's rendition of "The Bitch Is Back" on the 1999 edition? Except for the rendition of AC/DC's "You Shook Me," inexplicably assigned to Celine Dion and disco revivalist Anastacia, which features blistering guitar by Meredith ("Bitch") Brooks, none of the cuts crackle. Cher's dance floor hit "I Believe" sounds canned and forced, and Latin firecracker Shakira goes low-key with an acoustic version of her soft-focus "Underneath Your Clothes." Really enjoyable special.
The highlights would have to be Cher's and Celine Dions performances.
Cher performs Believe and A Song for the Lonely and knocks them dead.
Celine performs Im Alive and A New Day Has Come and practically brings the house down. She was superb.
Other artist were good also, in particular Anastacia.
Very interesting to watch and great to own.
