5 out of 5 stars A great album.......2002-03-04

I recently fell head over heels in love with the music of the Canadian band "The Headstones" after seeing "Hard Core Logo" (the lead singer, Hugh Dillon, starred in that movie). Their music can best be described as hard rock with a shot of punk and pop thrown in. This is my current favorite of their albums, it is dark, dreary, morbid crunchy and catchy. The music is beautiful and the lyrics are insightful, I can just sit there with headphones and bliss out to the music. This is a CD that I can listen to over and over again and not get sick of it, I just want to listen to it more. Go. Buy. Now.

5 out of 5 stars Rock and roll at it's best.......2000-08-25

This is the album that brought the Headstones into the Canadian spotlight. Great songs (many became hits) from a great band. In my opinion the Headstones are better than the 'Hip (you have to be Canadian to understand). If you like the Stone Temple pilots or Pearl Jam, you'll love this album.

3 out of 5 stars I wish I had a nickel..........2003-04-20

It's my opinion that Headstones is Grant Lee Buffalo's successor. I have thought about it for a while, and the closest sounding to Headstones I found is Grant Lee Buffalo. That's not a bad thing... well maybe it's bad if you didn't like Grant Lee Buffalo. I think it's nice. And I think it's sad, too. It's nice because Headstones can rock big time when they want to. It's sad at the same time because they didn't manage to rock all over Nickels for Your Nightmares.

The first 2 song, Downtown and Pinned You Down, are probably the hardest ones (with the exception maybe of F*** You). Settle, the first single, is a slower rock song reminiscent of Grant Lee Buffalo's Jubilee. Then there's Above Ground Swimming Pools, my favorite song on the album. It has a nice melody and shows what the lead singer is capable of. I mentionned it earlier, my second favorite song here, F*** You ! This is the song you want someone you don't like to listen to : "F*** you ! F*** you ! I will get over you !" It worked for me ;) !

The rest of the songs are average rock songs (I sometimes detect a little southern influence), they aren't groundbreaking but they work. I recommand a listen before buying. Headstones' is a nice band but they're not for everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Great 90s Canadian Garage Rock.......2005-05-06

This album drags a little bit in the middle, but the first 5 tracks could have easily been radio singles. It also picks up a little bit with tracks 8, 11 and 13. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Smile and (almost) Rave.......2002-10-09

Other than a truly irritating arrangement of song lyrics in the packaging, this is a wickedly good CD with excellent vocals, sharp as a knife lyrics and a refreshingly un-pretentious self-awareness. I bought this after seeing Hard Core Logo and finding Hugh Dillon a very charismatic screen presence; on this CD his charisma is evident in his writing (and he sounds good, too). Some of the tracks sounded a bit too similar (hence the four, not five stars) but there are nice melodic moments hidden among the headbanging kickass stuff. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful album of pretty little death songs..........2001-03-05

I seem to have this habit of finding obscure (obscure in the US, that is) Canadian bands and raving about them. Normally this does not result in me special-ordering all four of their albums from Canada, but it did this time. The Headstones are worth it, believe me.

"Smile and Wave," the Headstones' third album, continues their trend of being grim and darkly humorous rock, but there's some optimism in it -- the hidden track after "Physics" is a sweet acoustic love song, "Anything," followed by a jam with the defiant lyrics, "My addictions have failed to fail me." Oh, and then there's insane ranting by Bruce McDonald (the director of Hard Core Logo, in which singer Hugh Dillon starred). If you choose to analyze Headstones albums as the progression of Hugh Dillon's drug habit, you can tell he's beaten it by here, and the lyrics reflect that.

The intelligent, bitter, yet somehow funny cynicism is in full force on catchy rock songs like "Smile and Wave," "And," "Picture Frame of Rage," "Cubically Contained" (as Due South fans will recognize), "Do That Thing," "Supersmart," and "Nerve." Astute readers will note that I've named a large portion of the album. If you like this sort of humorously morbid tone in your rock, this is the band for you. How can you not resist a line like the opening of "Without a Sound": "She wore a beautiful dress to her own death, and everyone agreed it was tasteful"?

No review of this album would be complete without mentioning the self-referential "Pretty Little Death Song," in which Dillon takes on all those who dislike his pretty little death songs, and vows not to stop writing them. It's great. Fun game for listeners: note that the lyrics as sung include the song descriptions "Necrophilia, addiction, and insanity." Can you guess which songs he means? Read the liner notes -- it's "Cemetery," "Heart of Darkness," and "Unsound."

Yep, the Headstones sure do write some pretty little death songs, and they know how to rock. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to go listen to this album again. Hope you'll do the same.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing but the Best..........2005-01-15

Simply one of the best, if not the best CD I've ever bought. I'd also recommend their cd Smile and Wave, or the Greatest Fits cd. One of the best, or in my view the best Canadian band that ever existed.

5 out of 5 stars Hugh Dillon Rules.......2002-02-16

I love it when I seen a band play live and it sounds just like the CD. That's exactly the case with Picture of Health. Lead singer Hugh Dillon's snarl and ferocity come through completely intact on this album. The music is dark, sad, fast and very agressive. The cover of Tweeter and the Monkeyman is fantastic. This is one of the hardest working bands in Canada and it shows in their albums and in their live shows.

4 out of 5 stars Wake up U.S.A!.......2001-01-14

This is the debut CD of (I feel) Canada's premier Rock Band. They're a band that can ROCK, but after you listen to their music, you catch yourself thinking about the lyrics. I know, I know, the words thinking and rock band don't usually belong in the same sentence, but these guys are the exception to that rule. Hugh Dillon is a lyric writing genius. He's also a neurosis filled, authority hating, terminally depressed rebel that we'd all like to be in our rock and roll dreams. Buy this CD, listen to "When Something stands for Nothing" and "Cemetary" and pretend you're on that stage...all your dreams will come true.

4 out of 5 stars Giving the middle finger to convention.......2003-11-06

The first time I ever seen the Headstones was back in 1993 at a big outdoor music festival, and I loved the show. For over 10 years now, this band has been delivering their own brand of rock and literally giving the middle finger to convention.

At the head of the group is Hugh Dillon, a trash-mouthed, chain-smoking, former heroin addict that may be one of the most individual and recognizable icons in the Canadian Music scene. He was the star of the indie classic film Hard Core Logo and was also excellent in the movie Dance Me Outside.

Now on this album, The Oracle of Hi-Fi, the Headstones once again deliver a solid performance, perhaps the best yet. The guitars a harder than the last couple albums and the tunes are more raw. It just feels as though they have realized that they don't need to be friendly to the radio, but to their fan, the people that have stuck with them since the beginning.

This is a definite must-have for any hard rock collection, and in the spirit of the Headstones: I f*cking love these guys, and to hell with anyone who doesn't.

5 out of 5 stars Back to form.......2002-11-04

It can be said that the headstones are one of the best canadian rock bands out there. There music is loud hard and fast. Their last new album, "nickels for you nightmares" was not some of their best work. However "Oracle of Hi-Fi" is a return to what the headstones do best, ROCK AND ROLL. The album is reminiscent of the hard rock tunes found on "Picture of Health" and "Teeth and Tissue". "Oracle of Hi-Fi" is a one of the best headstones albums to date. I recommend it for any true headstones fan.

This is Lake of Tears second album, and my personal favorite. This album has the underground doom feel of the first one, with a much more polished feel to it. The title track and the last track, Upon the Highest Mountain Part 2 are definitely the two best songs on the album, but there are other highlights in RavenLand and Sweet Water are great tracks. A must for fans of all metal. This is their best album to date.

5 out of 5 stars A very `deep' record.......1999-04-08

Headstones is the best of Lake of tears records , because it's a deeper meaning in the text and a better sound more àction'. Raven land and sweet water are the best songs on this album i think anyway. They are the greatest of all the swedish groups. They have their own sound and style. if you haven't heard them you should!!!

4 out of 5 stars Local band feeling but good.......1998-08-31

Well, as all swedes know (or should know) this is a classic when it comes to metal. nicely composed album with both relativly fast and slow songs. Since it's doom it's not really really fast ever. Or maybe it is, kinda hard to tell for me that usualy listen to blackmetal hehe Well, well worth the money anyway!

The Headstones are a very tight band. If you like good old rock & roll, and a little melody than you best pick up this album. With great tunes as: Three angels, It's all over, & Cemetery. You will want to "crank it up" trust me. Also check out Smile & wave & Teeth & Tissue.

4 out of 5 stars Quite the debut.......1999-04-22

The headstones are a good, but not great band. If it wasn't for the lead singer, Hugh Dillon, I don't think I'd own any own their CD's. As it is, I have all three. This is their best. While most have heard "Something Stands for Nothing", a solid song in its own right, the landmark cut from the album has to be their cover of the Travelling Wilbury's "Tweeter and the Monkey Man". If you are interested in this band, start with this album over the others.
