The Three Sounds were pianist Gene Harris, bassist Andy Simpkins, and drummer Bill Dowdy, and they swung in-the-pocket. Although they were not as acclaimed as the Modern Jazz Quartet, the Ramsey Lewis Trio, and other marquee combos, their streamlined sound bridged Count Basie and bebop into a modern yet grooving sensibility. This two-CD set features the trio's entire 1960 Blue Hour sessions with saxophonist Stanley Turrentine. With Turrentine's robust, storytelling tenor sound, these dates are no-nonsense straight-ahead numbers and ballads, including "Willow Weep for Me," Andy Razaf's "Gee Baby, Ain't I Been Good to You," and Oscar Pettiford's "Blues in the Closet." Harris's lyrical ivory ticklings, Dowdy's zesty drum work, and Simpkins's deep and delicious bass lines get Turrentine's driving tenor as a topping and show that this ensemble was the real deal. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Customer Reviews:
This is as blue as jazz gets........2007-05-18
This is in my top 10 favorite jazz albums. Turrentine's tone has got the perfect soulful sound for this recording. I believe that no other sax player could have done it better. This CD is perfect for just relaxin, smoking a cigar (or other types of smoking), just chilling out and drinking a beer after a long day at work, background music for a hip art/record store, or even making some sweet love. enjoy it for many many years to come. Also, the extra disc is great too, but not as mellow as the first one, its more upbeat and moving, but it's still awesome.
Turrentine with the the Gene Harris Trio - pure jazz magic.........2003-09-10
Gene Harris is one of the best piano players out there, and this pairing with Mr. T is a bona-fide 5 Star classic. Having not heard it for a long time due to a totally worn out LP, I can't remember it ever sounding better; on top of which, now, we get the entire session. More Soul, more swinging, grooving Tenor genius, and a whole lot more fun and enjoyment. Stan is one of the few players on his instrument that can blow the funkiest blues on one track, and then turn around and astound you with his technical (yet always groovy) prowess on the very next cut. Stanley Turrentine was SPECIAL, and he is missed - terribly so.
Sloooow burn.......2003-03-23
A low, slow, burn of a set with a late night smokin' feel unlike anything else. Such a naked noir soundtrack you'll want to light up a cigarette when it's done.
Some Sssmmmoooth Jazz Here!.......2001-07-13
Some friends gave me this 2 CD Set for my birthday last year, and it has become one of my favorites. It's such a relaxing blend of talent. Smooth jazz w/ Turrentine on tenor sax, Gene Harris on piano, Andrew Simpkins on bass and Bill Dowdy on drums. Orginally released in 1960, this is some of the best jazz I've ever heard! Stanley Turrentine may not be as well known as some other jazz greats like Miles Davis, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck or Charlie Parker, but that doesn't mean the talent isn't there...because it certainly is! He is a jazz legend in his own right, or so I feel. Afterall, he did play a gig in the early years w/ Ray Charles and he and trumpeter brother, Tommy Turrentine Jr, played a couple of years in the Max Roach quintet. His music is very underated in my opinon.
I liked the reviewers' comments from Oregon. Read it....it's exactly what you wanna do when listening to this set. Even if you aren't a big jazz fan, this is something that I think most anyone would enjoy listening to. It's that light and that smooth. Blue Hour stays in my CD player. These cd's are remastered for your ultimate audio pleasure. Also, the liner notes give detailed info on the recording of these sessions, which is really interesting. Kick back and relax to the ultimate max with Blue Hour.

Mrs Henderson Presents.......2007-05-16
A very enjoyable and at times funny movie. Judi Dench gives one of her best perfomances with excellent support from the other cast members. This is a movie one could watch several times and never tire of it. AAA+++
Absolutely infectious!!!.......2007-03-28
From start to finish, MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS is the finest collection of solid standards and George Fenton's own recreated time-period evocations, fully fleshed and skillfully performed and recorded. The talents of singer Will Young will not go unnoticed, especially in his heartbreaking rendition of ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE.Your toes will be tapping, your lips will be smiling and you will be glad that this soundtrack and wonderful film are yours! You will be transported to WW2 England and you will be humming these tunes day and night.
A Creation and Recreation of Nostalgia.......2006-04-23
George Fenton has put together a musical score for the completely delightful MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS that is a combination of original music deeply influenced by the time of the film (London during WW II) and some of the best 'old favorite songs' from that time. In the film the music is always present, whether in the performances on the Windmill Theater stage or in the lyricism of the acting by Judi Dench, Bob Hoskins and crew.
Fenton includes such terrific oldies as Johnny Mercer's 'Goody Goody', Charles Harris' 'After the Ball', Noel Gay's 'Letting in the Sunshine', Frank Loesser's 'Blue Nightfall', and Jerome Kern's 'All the things you are'. He segues these pieces with his own fine orchestrations and the result is a score that not only enhances the mood of the film, but one that stands alone as a recording. The various performers include Camille O'Sullivan, Charlene Ford, Ciaran Connolly, Elise Audeyev, Frances Garvey, Frank Lawson, Joseph McMurray, Kate Power, Matthew Hart, Melody Squire, Rachel Lawrence, Sir Thomas Allen!, Sophie Brown, The O'Brien Sisters, Vanessa Barmby, Vicki Davids, and Victoria Hay.
This is a recording to conjure up memories not only of a successful film but also of a time when music conveyed a lot of emotion during times of stress. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 06
Mrs. Henderson Presents.......2006-03-24
Met ALL my expectations, having seen/loved the film - especially the orchestration, arrangements, and vocals. Sound quality superb.
I've played this CD for others - of all age groups - all agree it's a defininte winner.
Upbeat and Fun!.......2006-03-22
Love this CD for the nostalgia! My favorite track is "All the Things You Are" by J.Kern and O.Hammerstein. This year's Oscar telecast produced a montage of film clips to this track including the last scene from "Mrs. Henderson Presents" and it was so emotion granting as is the song. Many of the other songs are from a time period right before WWII, but they are just fun and upbeat -- it was the depression, people needed to be uplifted with such such songs as "Letting in the Sunshine" and "Goody Goody." Judi Dench was asked by someone in the bleachers at the Oscars how it felt to be nominated this year for Mrs. Henderson, and she answered back, "just listen to the soundtrack darling!" How great is that???!!!!

For his debut on this label, Wynton Marsalis gets back to basics with a small combo. Taking a break from his large-ensemble works like Blood on the Fields and All Rise, the trumpeter leads a quartet consisting of bassist Carlos Henriquez, pianist Eric Lewis, and drummer Ali Jackson. Labelmates Bobby McFerrin (who recorded with the trumpeter on the early '80s LP, The Young Lions) and Dianne Reeves join Marsalis on "Baby, I Love You" and "Feeling of Jazz." "Big Fat Hen" is peppered by a New Orleans-meets-Brazil second-line samba, while "Skippin'" is a Monkish riff tune with stop time. The title track, dedicated to the time when kids go to sleep, includes a melodic nod to "The Flight of the Bumblebee," a mid-tempo groove, a ballad and the Cuban clave. With the sterling production by younger brother Delfeayo, Wynton Marsalis starts off on a good foot. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
Album Description
Wynton Marsalis has compiled a remarkable track record as a jazz trumpeter, bandleader and composer. He has become the most recognized jazz artist in the world today. He serves as Artistic Director of the prestigious Jazz at Lincoln Center and is renowned as a jazz statesman-a role officially recognized in 2001 when United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan proclaimed him an international ambassador of goodwill and appointed him a UN Messenger of Peace. Marsalis has won nine Grammy Awards and is the first jazz musician ever to be honored with the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in Music (for his epic 1997 recording Blood on the Fields). Wynton Marsalis has produced 33 jazz and 11 classical records, including three certified gold records.
Now Wynton Marsalis has joined the roster of legendary jazz label Blue Note Records, reuniting with Blue Note president and music industry veteran Bruce Lundvall, who signed Wynton to his very first record deal in 1980. Marsalis makes his label debut with The Magic Hour, an upbeat, lyrical eight-song outing featuring his remarkable quartet-pianist Eric Lewis, bassist Carlos Henriquez and drummer Ali Jackson -and two special guests, Blue Note label mates Dianne Reeves and Bobby McFerrin.
The Magic Hour is Marsalis' first jazz ensemble studio recording since 1999's Marciac Suite. His last album was All Rise, an extended composition for big band, gospel choir and symphony orchestra. "All Rise was such a huge piece involving over two hundred people. I wanted to produce my next recording with a smaller group," says the trumpeter, who settled into Right Track Studios in New York for two days last June to record the new album. "I wanted to restate my basic love of jazz music in a quartet format," says Marsalis.
Wynton Marsalis: Trumpet
Eric Lewis: Piano, Carlos Henriquez: Bass, Ali Jackson: Drums
Dianne Reeves vocals on Feeling of Jazz
Bobby McFerrin vocals on Baby, I Love You
Customer Reviews:
Simply brilliant.......2006-01-05
Sure, I am no expert on Wynton Marsalis as this is only the 3rd CD of Wynton's I have owned (I picked it up cuz it's only AUS$17). Sure, the music is a bit light and isn't as advanturous as some of the fans would expect. Sure, the music may sound simple, but man, THEY REALLY SWING!
I really dig this 'less is more' approach the musicians have adopted on this CD. The sound is raw and soulful. The phrasings are beautiful and delicate. And the New Orlean drum beats (and the hand clappings) are deliciously funky.
No Magic at all !!!!.......2005-10-18
Let me preface this review by stating that I am a huge Wynton Marsalis fan. This recording simply has no magic. After coming to Blue Note I ahd an expectation Wynton coming out with a classic Jazz CD. While he is without question a very brilliant Jazz Musician who definitely respects and preserves the art form. He simply does not deliver or demonstrate that abibilty on this recording.
Not too much magic.......2005-05-16
This is a somewhat disappointing CD although good to hear Wynton again in a small group format - the CD, however, is not on par with his recordings of 15 years ago. Sounds like a rhythm section that doesn't play together all the time. Some nice moments but the magic is missing.
Where's the magic?.......2004-12-05
Wynton is a great trumpetplayer but this cd is very dissapointing. When you compare it to his work on columbia (standards, live at Blues Alley) this is a very moderate recording. The rhythmsection is not up to it and the material is very weak.
Buy the cd's mentioned above, they are much more rewarding.
great album - recorded very well........2004-05-26
This album took a couple of listens and then it happened... I was hooked... It's recorded very well and it even sounds like Cakewalk or Pro-Tools were used in the process... Marvelous! When is the next one like this?
Branford's latest is really great too...

Good bargain........2004-08-25
The performances are good--this is the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, after all--and you get 2 full CDs, with 2 selections from "Trial by Jury", 5 from "HMS Pinafore", 9 from "The Pirates of Penzance", 9 from "Iolanthe", 12 from "The Mikado", 6 from "The Yeomen of the Guard", and 13 from "The Gondoliers". The booklet is a bit skimpy, and only lists recording dates for the first CD (1929-1949). But the sound is good, and the music is great, and at this price it's a great "greatest hits" collection.

It's easy to understand why Joe Lovano is the most admired tenor saxophonist under the age of 50 in jazz today. The 43-year-old Cleveland native has the thick, burnished tone of swing giants such as Ben Webster and Lester Young, yet he is completely comfortable with the open structures and radical harmonics of such members of the vanguard as David Murray and Bill Frisell. In Lovano's playing, you can hear the essential unity of the jazz tradition. Seldom has that unity been illustrated with as much lucidity or feeling as on Lovano's Rush Hour, a brilliant album which should expand his following from critics and fellow musicians to a much wider audience. Rush Hour is an unusual album, for nine of the 13 tracks were arranged and conducted by Pulitzer Prize-winning classical composer Gunther Schuller. For four ballads, including Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss," Schuller backs Lovano with a jazz combo and a string orchestra which thickens the atmosphere without sweetening it. For four more vigorous works--including two extended Schuller compositions plus a movement from the Charles Mingus "Epitaph" symphony which Schuller resurrected--the conductor backs the saxophonist with a brass, reed, and woodwind orchestra which features some dazzling clusters of low-pitched clarinets and high-pitched saxophones. Coleman's ballad "Kathline Gray" is arranged as a jazz chamber piece for soprano sax, cello, harp, guitar, bass, and drums with gorgeous results. Lovano completed the album with three of his own compositions plus Billy Strayhorn's "Chelsea Bridge;" on these he multi-tracked various reeds and drums himself and added some truly adventurous scat singing by his wife Judy Silvano. In its perfect pairing of a major jazz voice and an uncommonly imaginative orchestrator, Rush Hour reminds one of nothing so much as Miles Davis's collaborations with Gil Evans. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorites.......2001-05-23
When it comes to jazz cds my collection heavily favors the classic artists like Miles, Trane, Monk, and Mingus. But I would put this recording right up there with any of the heavyweights. Lovano's technique is superb and his range is impressive. Schuller's arrangements of some classic as well as original material is on a par with Gil Evans' collaborations with Miles. Particular favorites here are some of the ballads (Angel Eyes, a great Lovano tenor solo on Chelsea Bridge), and Schuller's "Lament for M" a poignant ode to his late wife. Superb.
Eclectic mix of tunes, great orchestrations.......2000-08-18
There is a great deal of variety on this album, with tunes from Monk, Mingus, Ellington, Coleman and a few standards and originals by Gunther Schuller and Lovano. The settings range from lush scoring for band and strings to Lovano alone. Gunther Schuller's "Rush Hour" is for me the highlight of this set- it's a frantic, 12-tone bop line with some fairly free solos. Also outstanding is the arrangement of Monk's "Crepuscule With Nellie" which manages to capture something of Monk's original quirkiness while still sounding new. This album has a lot to offer, and while some of the tracks are more accessible than others, all are worth repeated listenings.

MANERD G. KREBS 'B-DENVER WASWRIGHT AND A #1 KOOL CAT THUMBSUP ON THE MONK..........
Live Monk from the mid sixties.......2000-12-05
This album was recorded around 1964 at a live date in California. The personnel features Monk's quartet of the time consisting of the underrated Charlie Rouse on tenor, Larry Giles on bass, and Ben Riley on drums. This is a solid live date that features some spirited soloing from Rouse, (check out his solo on "Hackensack"), as well as Monk's classic off center sense of harmony, and his jagged, angular soloing ("Light Blue" is fine example). Gales and Riley each produce not only as rock solid rythm section but with their capable soloing throughout. As a unit the band is seamless, familiar with each other and the material. At times the sound quality suffers from source degredation and occational hissing and popping, but nothing too excessive. Overall this is a good live performance by Monk and his quartet, worth the investment in musical quality as well as quantity, (only "Ruby, My Dear" is under 10 minutes). A gem for Monk fans hungry for more.
