5 out of 5 stars "The Summer Smiles, The Summer Knows".......2006-01-07

"When Monica Mancini set out to record this retrospective of songs from films, she clearly had her passions in order. Monica comes by her affinity for the medium honestly, having grown up in a house permeated with some of the best film music in history, from the pen of her incredibly prolific father, Henry. So it is no surprise that this collection has all the artistry, pathos, and musicality that it so deserves." ~ Dave Grusin, Liner Notes - 2002 ~

Dave Grusin, an expert arranger, conductor, pianist, film scorer himself has described this album so perfectly. The choice of material in this CD is impeccable with Monica Mancini's graceful interpretations and not to mention the flawlessly beautiful arrangements by Torrie Zito, John Calandrelli, Michael Lang, Patrick Williams, George Doering, Ray Ellis, Harvey Cohen and John Frizzell. There are twelve theme songs from various remarkable films in this recording and most of the tracks were backed up by an orchestra with the exception of a few.

The theme song from the movie "Summer of '42" penned by the creative husband-and-wife-team of Alan & Marilyn Bergman and composer Michel Legrand "The Summer Knows" is one of my top choices from this collection. Splendidly arranged by Michael Lang and Harvey Cohen on string section, she renders this timeless song so true to its essence and making it the most beautiful version, bar none!

Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Alfie" (from the movie of the same title), is a moving song accompanied only by the sublime piano playing of Michael Lang. She has an exquisitely beautiful voice, the kind that still shines without the trimmings and backing up of an orchestra, (the kind that still glows even on A Cappella singing). Another affecting song and a favorite of mine is "Too Late Now," a Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner treasure and theme from the movie "Royal Wedding." The orchestral arrangement was done by Torrie Zito, a fine pianist/arranger/conductor who worked briefly with the legendary musical icon, Frank Sinatra. I loved the way he injected a classical touch on his arrangement, almost sounding like one of Claude Debussy's masterpieces. I would say that this is one of the best tracks. Ditto with another Torrie Zito arrangement, Johnny Mandel and Paul Webster's "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper." Ms. Mancini gave these classics the retire-the-trophy-treatments and made them her very own.

The lovely opener, Ennio Morricone and Gregg Field's "Cinema Paradiso," arranged by Jorge Calandrelli, is also one of the standouts. Another beauty is "I'll Never Say Goodbye" from the movie "The Promise" with piano accompaniment by Michael Lang. The finale "Over The Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz" is simply divine with orchestral arrangement by Ray Ellis.

This recording produced by Ms. Mancini's musician husband, Gregg Field, truly showed off not only the singer's vocal artistry, but her classy and elegant style of singing. Thank you Ms. Mancini for your wonderful gift of music. Music to enjoy forever!

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Monica!.......2004-06-28

My favorite song of all time is "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper". Until now, the 2 best versions of it were by Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett. By FAR, this is THE best version of that song. Pure, without "vocal gymnastics", screaming, yelping or other artificial "stylings".. here it is sung as it was written, perfectly performed with beautiful orchestration. The rest of the album is no less miraculous. It is stunning. "A Day in the Life of a Fool", "Cinema Paradiso" and the haunting and tender "Theme from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" are just as lavish and well-crafted. Okay Monica, now could you release one album a year instead of one album every 3 years? Pleeeeassee??

5 out of 5 stars She's chocolate and creme!.......2004-01-29

Seeing Monica Mancini on stage singing the theme from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, hearing Gregg Field's drums, seeing the multi-media film clip behind her... is like having chocolate and creme!

Monica does not belt you to death, she does not yell at you, she does not punch notes into your being... she soothes you to her, lures you, with a voice that has been hidden for years.

Her voice is perfect in pitch, tone, and her ability to hit every single note as if she were born to sing. Clearly having inherited talent from her mom Ginny and her dad Henry.

On this cd I love the way she embraces other composers songs..."Baby Mine" just one of them. I about melted when she sang that song.

She has a great sense of humor on stage, is spontaneous, and is herself.

She has a great secure personality and stage persona and she has the family roots to give you a chill in your bones when she shares them with you in stories and song.

Hearing her sing live is like being home!

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing.......2003-09-04

I sample A LOT of jazz vocalists (for some reason most contemporary jazz vocalists seem to be female) but initially dismissed Monica Mancici because she's the child of a famous father. Henry was very classy and as accomplished as musicians get, and such qualities rarely get passed down the line. What a mistake. I only heard her Mercer album because it was -- thankfully -- being played in a store I was visiting. I bought it, loved it, and was primed for this collection. A solid Five Stars. There's new stuff here (for me) and old songs done splendidly. Over The Rainbow, aside from its original iconic take by "Judy," has been covered hundreds of times. And Monica's take? Quite simply as good as any. With this release I've recognized what I love about Monica's voice: Aside from being simply perfect technically, her voice glows like a crackling fireplace! I mourned the recent passing of Rosemary Clooney, and now feel that there's a relatively new vocalist who I can follow for many years. Live or recorded, I'll be there ...

5 out of 5 stars Monica's Latest is the best yet.......2003-06-04

Sorry, but I don't worry about the nuts and bolts of every particular detail of an album. I play what I enjoy and Monica's albums bring me that enjoyment. Cinema Paradiso has rarely left my CD Player. I'm only sorry she appears not to have a web page. Where someone like Michael Jackson or Dixie Chicks are all over the Internet, virtually no information is available concerning Monica Mancini. It's impossible to find a concert schedule. I hope she produces another album soon, I've worn out her others.

    Product Description

With the demise of Headbangers Ball and the continuing wussification of American radio, metal rock has been shunted to the side of the great musical spotlight. Not that it needed much pushing; metal had long been the Rodney Dangerfield of rock, either ignored or openly scorned by critics. Hip-O Select proudly dons its spandex and breaks out the mousse to issue our first foray into the heshers world. Y&T was first known as Yesterday & Today (yes, it was taken from the Beatles album title), but when they signed to A&M, they must have recognized the power of initials separated by an ampersand, and they changed their name to Y&T, replete with a cool logo. Like a fair number of bands in rock history, they never quite seemed to be able to capture their on-stage luster in the studio, and while they were able to build a significant fan base, it was largely on the strength of their touring. In 1985, they finally got to take a whack at a live record, and they got it mostly right. For some inexplicable reason, side two of the original album starts off with a studio track. Its a pretty great tune, though. Summertime Girls might have been influenced in some small, tiny, nearly infinitesimal way by Van Halens Jump, and it seemed to get a good reaction on the tour, so perhaps a studio version was readied for a radio release before the live album came out. Who knows? In any event, weve got both versions on this release of Open Fire. Theres also a previously-unreleased version of Black Tiger. Should you have the urge to crank your stereo up to eleven, you might want to pop in this fondly-remembered gem from 1985.

Awesome to say the least. To this very day, he still rocks the bay area when he wants to. Still sounds good. In fact, Dave Meniketti is my personal choice to be Van Halen's Lead Singer! Are you out there Eddie? Give Dave a call, he plays a wicked guitar and can sing like there is no tomorrow.....he never ever lost that powerful voice of his......Earthshaker and Mean Streak are my other faves in that order.......Thank you for these albums. If you like rock and roll, on the heavy side....do yourself a favor, replace the vinyl, or cd that you wore out......Get these first 3 releases, you'll be glad you did.

      5 out of 5 stars THE HEAVIEST Y&T ALBUM.......2005-06-02

BY FAR THE HEAVIEST Y&T ALBUM.SOME REALLY GREAT SONGS ON THIS ONE."FROM THE MOON" SETS THE STAGE FOR THE GREAT "OPEN FIRE", AND FROM THERE ON IT ONLY GETS BETTER.THIS ALBUM HAS SO MUCH ENERGY,THERE WAS NOBODY THAT COULD TOUCH THEM AT THIS TIME.THE GUITARS SOUND CRUNCHY,GREAT RHYTHMS,GREAT VOCALS,YOU SIMPLY CANT'T LISTEN TO THIS AND NOT REALISE THAT Y&T WAS THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD AT THEIR PRIME.THIS ONE AND "MEANSTREAK" ARE THE BEST. A&M RECORDS WERE SO LAME IN NOT TREATING THIS BAND RIGHT,HOW UNFARE IS THAT 99.9 OF THE BANDS THAT MADE IT BIGGER THAN THEY DID,WERE NOT EVEN HALF AS GOOD AS THESE GUYS WERE.WELL,THAT'S THE MUSIC INDUSTRY FOR YOU.BUT FOR THOSE OF US WHO KNOW THE LEGACY OF THIS GREAT BAND,HAIL TO THE GREAT Y&T.

5 out of 5 stars Simply put, the most underrated band in Metal history.......2005-01-08

This album is one of the lesser-know musical accomplishments of the 1980s. I agree with those before me -- this album (and "Mean Streak," which followed) are, in my opinion, the bands best album(s), but I'm also fond of several cuts from their other A&M studio albums -- "Earthshaker," "In Rock We Trust" and "Down For The Count."

"Black Tiger," though, shows an exuberant, powerful rock that is melodic as well. No slashing though chords, no half-baked attempts at solos, no incoherant additional noises -- just a superb rock experience. "From The Moon" and "Open Fire" are a classic lead-off, the title track has to be one of their best rockers, "Barroom Boogie" is a Y&T live standby but is nonetheless great in studio, and "Forever" and "Winds Of Change" close out each side of the album versions to near perfection.

Fans of 80's Metal should have embraced this band years ago. A $33 price tag doesn't help, although that's no fault of Amazon.com or the band -- imports are generally this costly, especially for a band whose American releases have bee discontinued. Hopefully, the Y&T catalog will be re-released in the U.S. and everyone will get a chance to realized just what they are missing.

5 out of 5 stars started it all.......2004-08-28

She has worked with the Harlem disco wizard Patrick Adams and with the groups Igongito, Musique, and has recorded with Inner Life with the hit "I'm Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair). She has release mutiple albums with the groups and currently retired from the music scene. This is the one-hit wonder diva that we've been looking for.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it is that good!.......2003-05-15

"Black tiger" from 1982 is (together with the following "Mean streak") Y&T's finest effort. After an instrumental tune/intro "From the moon" the action really begin, and "Open fire" is a typical up tempo song by Y&T, similar to "Mean streak". The material is rather diverse and there's lighter and melodic tunes like "Don't wanna lose" (a real gem!) as well as fast rockers in the shape of "Black tiger". The bass driven "Barroom boogie" gives the album character and the captivating fan favourite "Forever" gives an example of a classic Y&T formula used on previous as well as following songs. "Hell or high water" shows Y&T's ability to be slow but still groovy and heavy without ending up like Dio on "Strange highway". The closing "Winds of change" is a ballad and `tho I'm not crazy about Y&T's ballads in general it's quite good. Highly recommended!

            5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Musicianship!.......2002-10-06

One of the greatest yet underrated rock albums of all time, Y&T's "Black Tiger" was a prodigious effort. Dave Meniketti's writing, vocals, and guitar virtuosity were at a world class level to say the least. Truly remarkable...

            5 out of 5 stars From a 20 year Y&T fan.......2001-06-06

I was introduced to Y&T by a fellow soldier from California when I was in the Army in 1982.It was the greatest favor anyone ever did for me ! Black Tiger is the first Y&T album I ever heard and remains one of my top ten favorites to this day. They are absolutely the most underated rock band of the 80's.Dave Meniketti is the best Lead Guitar/Lead Vocalist that I know of,performing each with an extreme amount of skill and feeling.A wonderful bluesy soulfulness.I can't say enough great things about this guy.Every song on this disc is great.I have a particular fondness for "Black Tiger","Open Fire"and "Don't Wanna Loose".I strongly suggest that everyone buy this.It is an absolute must for any rock/metal collection.(All Y&T's are a must in my opinion). If you are a metal fan from way back in the 80's or a younger person checking out some older rock,I truly believe you will love this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Classic San Francisco frash.......2001-01-12

Maybe not as good as their debut (as the abridged Y&T anyways), Earthshaker, but a must have for any self-respecting metalhead (they don't make 'em like this any more). Great songs, production, and vocals from Dave Meniketti. Classics include the title track, Forever and Open Fire. Some amusing lyrics on Barroom Boogie (i.e. Frankenstein's daughter all curled up on me)and a great soft/hard ballad in Wind of Change (not to be confused with that Gorky Park nonsense from the Scorpions). There's not really a bad cut on here. This album should have propelled the San Francisco boys to loftier heights, but alas it did not. Unfortunately, their next album, Mean Streak, was a little lighter affair, but still decent.

This album was, and still is, one of Y&T's best. I was fortunate enough to have seen them in Hawaii during their short 2 month shows @ Lil'Orphan Annie's, and they were great then, and it's good that they were able to capture some of their excitement on tape.
