The Classic Line Up Begins Here.......2006-12-19
"Armed & Dangerous" was ANTHRAX's second release, a mini album of 5 songs. It marked the debut of singer Joey belladonna and Bassist Frank Bello. This was supposed to be a taster of the second full length album that was to follow, "Spreading The Disease". With Belladonna on board, the band had a REAL singer, something that fellow thrashers SLAYER and even the mighty METALLICA did NOT have. This guy could sing classic metal a la PRIEST and MAIDEN in his sleep, but the music was 100% high octane thrash, although some of the songs here might sound a bit dated in that they tend to sound more akin to conventional metal.
The EP kicks off with "Armed & Dangerous". A different mix than the one that appears on "Spreading...", this song has that galloping thrash beat reminiscent of "The Four Horsemen" by METALLICA, but the song has a more melodic quality to it, not only from Belladonna's singing, but from the rest of the band as well. I prefer this mix over the "Spreading's...". The overall sound is much heavier and the sound is much more spacier. Next is "Raise Hell", a song that was supposed to be included on "Spreading..." but never made it. It's a catchy, mid tempo metal song that has more in common with an ACCEPT or JUDAS PRIEST song than with METALLICA or SLAYER. Some fans even complained that this track was "too commercial". I think it's a great song and one of the band's "lost gems". They have never played it live as far as I know and it's a real shame. Great vocal from Joey!
Next is "God Save The Queen", a cover of the SEX PISTOLS classic. At this point on the EP, it seems awkward that ANTHRAX chose this song, because none of the band's future "hardcore" tendencies were very evident at this stage. Nevertheless, the cover is played pretty much without any drastic changes over the original and I'm inclined to say this is the EP's weakest song, although it's not bad.
The original EP closes with two, live in the studio tracks. It is here that we truly get the ANTHRAX to come: Loud, fast and uncompromisingly brutal. First is "Metal Thrashing Mad", a rehash from their first album (Fistful Of Metal), this new version breathes new life and totally crushes the original. Charlie Benante's hyper drumming is a highlight and the insane guitar thrashing of Scott Ian and Dan Spitz are a force to be reckon with. All this leads up to the album's closer, "Panic". Again, a rehash from the first album, this sounds like a totally new song. It is played with such an unbridled fury and speed that it can make SLAYER sound tame in comparison. If there's a definition of the genre "THRASH", then this is it: a barrage of drum brutality courtesy of Mr. Benante and lunatic riffing from Ian and Spitz, plus Bello's tight bass, all topped off with Belladonna's supersonic wailing, this must be one of the genre's highlights, along with "Angel Of Death" by SLAYER, "Battery" by METALLICA or "Darkness Descends" by DARK ANGEL. The first time I heard this song, I thought my turntable was playing it at tha wrong speed!!! For a song that was recorded live at a studio, this sounds impressively tight and extremely well produced. Ironically, their follow up album (Spreading) sported a less intense production. This song alone is worth the price of the EP.
The CD version includes 2 demo version songs featured on their debut album and feature ANTHRAX's first vocalist, Neil Turbin. They are good for historical reasons, but the real deal are the previous 5 songs.
For fans of ANTHRAX and true THRASH metal in general!!!
A TRUE GEM.......2002-02-20
ARMED AND DANGEROUS is the first time that we get to hear ANTHRAX with Joey Belladonna on lead vocals, and it is a preview of what is to come. Yes the album sounds dated by todays standards, but this album is almost 20 years old what do u expect. The songs have killer riffs, combined with Joey's almost opera sounding voice, show why ANTHRAX is a metal band that sound be mentioned in the same breath as METALLICA or SLAYER, and MEGADETH. SOLDIERS OF METAL is a great song full of energy, and GOD SAVE THE QUEEN is a great cover of the SEX PISTOLS classic song. After this album the band would continue to polish their sound, but this album is a must for REAL metal fans. Buy it while u can, when its gone, you will regret not buying it.
So what if they're called Anthrax.......2001-11-04
Long before suspicious letters were in the mail, this metal five was probably the next biggest band to Metallica in the mid 1980's. The nice thing about Armed & Dangerous are the rare tracks of the 1983 demos that were eventually re-recorded on Fistful of Metal. The B-sides of Raise Hell and God Save the Queen were fun to listen to also. Too bad Anthrax will never be re-united with Joey Belladona, but albums like this will remind us of the old 'thrax. Don't change your name to be PC!
So its not a classic. So what!.......2001-04-20
D'you wanna know how much I paid for this? £5!! Or about $8 for all you Americans. This is one good little CD, and considering the price I got it for, this was a bargain. It's nice to see that not all 80s bands are charging ridiculously high prices for thier CDs (eh, Metallica?) and bands like Anthrax who don't enjoy the success that other bands have need to charge more, if anything. I give em my respect.
If you want music that slightly resembles that of Metallica or Testament except with Iron Maiden style vocals, this will not let you down. Not as fast paced as some thrash metal bands, Anthrax developed a more mature sound and were blessed with a singer that could actually sing. I only have one complaint - thier cover of God Save The Queen. It's a punk song written by the Sex Pistols, so giving it slick vocals completely defys the object of it and I'd rather listen to the original. Still, considering the rest of the CD and the price I got it for, I don't care. God knows why this band aren't now enjoying the success of Metallica, Slayer or Iron Maiden coz if this CD (which is meant to be one of their worst) is anything to go by, they deserve it.
Dated, but still very good.......1999-04-08
Although the songs sound dated compared to today's music, there is no denying that this is one good album. Granted, some of the lyrics are a little weak compared to Anthrax's newer stuff, but that is to be expected since this is their second release. Armed and Dangerous and Metal Thrashin' Mad are two classic Anthrax songs that never lose their intensity. The last two songs are weak (lyrically), but they are even older than the songs on this release. These two songs are where it all began for Anthrax because these songs made up their limited edition demo. I recommend newer Anthrax, but fans should definitely get this album because it shows the development of the thrash style that Anthrax helped to start, and it includes their very first songs. (It's almost impossible to find their demo tape now.) Armed and Dangerous is a must-have for any real Anthrax fan.

Great Music, Horrible Disc Quality.......2007-01-26
This is the simple review: the music is killer. Neil Turbin is great.
Music is 5 stars. Disc quality and editing is - 2 stars.
Here are the problems: The disc sounds bad. Also, there is an unforgiveable 2 second gap between each song. The gaps exists even when the song is supposed to blend into the following tune. It was so annoying that I put my CD on Ebay.
BLOW UP THE VAULTS!!!!!!.......2006-01-21
YES! Here's what I was hoping to find! FISTFUL OF METAL and ARMED AND DANGEROUS together on one release. This, my friends, is the ANTHRAX story chapters ONE and TWO together on one KILLER compilation.
Now, I am here to tell you not to listen to ANYBODY but me on this one. FISTFUL is such a cool record, I can't believe how many people are knocking it. NEIL TURBIN only sang vocals on the one album, and yeah, they are a bit outrageously high pitched, but the speed and killer licks will whip yo' hide. No joke. It sounds like it was recorded inside of a trash can, but man can it rock... Play loudly.
Keep the volume as loud for ARMED AND DANGEROUS. This record introduces a young sounding JOEY BELLADONNA before he really claimed his sound. Here we get him covering some TURBIN material, and we get him on a couple early live outings. I love early THRAX, SPREADING THE DISEASE is probably the best album, but I get all jazzed up when I hear a real classic early eighties metal track that was recorded on zero budget. This is underground New York Garage sh*t and it is wicked f'in awesome. If you are an ANTHRAX fan and have never heard these albums.. do yourself a favor and pick this up!
Exellent reissue.......2005-07-21
Don't be fooled by the moron below me, this is the exact same sound qaulity as the original 'Fistful of Metal' CD that came out in the early 90's. I bought this to replace my old scratched up copy and it sounds great. It is definatly worth it, now even more because it includes the 'Armed & Dangerous' EP as well. For some reason, these two Anthrax releases were very hard to find, and i always thought 'Fistful' was greatly overlooked and neglected, so i am glad Scott Ian and crew have not forgotten their awesome debut album and decided to reissue it for the 20th anniversary.
It is a short album, only around 35 minutes or so, but the EP included makes it longer. 'Fistful of Metal' is probably the most brutal Anthrax album, for one thing, they had this guy called Neil Turbin who could scream his head off. It is very raw sounding and sounds nothing like any of their later albums, in fact you might think it is a completely differant band. Of the big four debut albums (the others being Kill Em All, Show No Mercy and Killing is my Buissness) this is my favorite. My favorite cuts are DEATHRIDER, METAL THRASHING MAD, SOILDERS OF METAL, SUBJUGATOR, ANTHRAX, DEATH FROM ABOVE and the cool Alice Cooper cover I'M EIGHTEEN. What ever happened to Neil Turbin? i think they should of held on to him, i like Joey too, but why would you just kick out some one that talented? Oh yeah, the drumming on this album is insane, just listen to Charlie on this thing with his double bass pedals, he was all about speed back then i guess, but he would become better and more inovative. Scott Ian is the best here though, he came up with the best riffage back then (still does) and this album showcases it perfectly. I would say that you should definatly give this a try if you harbor any interest at all in early 80's thrash or even metal in general, it is such a fun record. Keep in mind that it was 1984 and they were still an underground band back then, so the production is kind of horrible, but the music is so good that you will get over that, come to think of it, what thrash album ever had GOOD production anyway? remember that this was a gendre noted for its attacks on any kind of commercial "polished" form of metal.
Anyway, this album is worth finding if you like thrash in the vein of early Metallica, Exodus, Slayer or even Metal Church.
Great Albums, Horrible Release.......2005-06-15
Fistful of Metal is one of the all time great metal albums. Unfortunately, this release sounds like it was sourced from 96 kbps mp3s. Buyer beware. Buy the original releases instead. You'll be more satisfied with them.
I don't know what band that is, but it's not Anthrax.......2005-03-07
Man, most bands have got weird sounding debuts, but Anthrax really takes it to another level. This is nothing like 'Spreading the Disease', even though it was only a year earlier, and has very little thrash in it. This is pretty much pure speed metal from beginning to end, mostly Judas Priest worship type stuff. It's pretty entertaining, though certainly not all that hot, so I only really recommend this to very, very serious Anthrax fans. If it weren't a historic curiosity, 'Fistful of Metal' would still be kinda amusing, but not enough so to make it worth having. Same goes with the 'Armed & Dangerous' ep, which comes along with it.
'Fistful of Metal' has probably the crappiest production I've ever heard on a metal album outside of Black Metal. Not very loud, lots a static at times, no real depth or thickness. Too bad they didn't remaster it. Turbin is quite an amusing vocalist. He's about as over the top as they come, with a rather unbelievable amount of shrieking. As with most of this album, he's fairly entertaining, if not exactly very good. Everything on 'Fistful' sounds pretty much the same, with the exception of the cover, 'Eighteen', which still has much the same tone and feeling, it's just slower, mid-paced hard rock rather than speed metal. The songs they'd later do for 'Greater of Two Evils' are the best ones here. 'Death Rider' and 'Metal Thrashing Mad' are both total stompers, lots of fun and energy, and 'Panic' isn't too far off, with a particularly nice little lead section. Everything else on here at least sounds pretty good while it's on, even if it isn't all that memorable.
'Armed & Dangerous' hasn't got much new material, but it's still kinda interesting. The title track is the same as on 'Spreading...' and other than that we've got a buncha Turbin songs with Joey on the vox, a song called 'Raise Hell' and a cover of 'God Save the Queen'. The re-done Tubin songs are pretty decent. Live in the studio, but they actually tend to have better production than on the debut, and Joey does some shriekier, vox than he'd typical do, kinda mixing his own style with Turbin's. 'Raise Hell' is kinda blah, just sorta a more primitive version of the stuff they'd do on the next album. It's alright, but not up to Anthrax's standards. I've never been a Sex Pistols fan, so the 'God Save the Queen' cover doesn't interest me too much, though it is pretty funny to hear Joey try and sing a punk song.
Well, that's it. Not very good, but still sorta fun and interesting, and worth a look for serious Anthrax fans. No one else need bother with it.

Funked Out Rock with a Touch of Majesty.......2007-03-16
Matthew Ward has one of the all-time great vocal instruments in any style of music. His pure and distinctly soulful sound is instantly recognizable. This album, released in 1986, was a personal landmark for me. Prior to this album, my view of the "Contemporary Christian" music scene was that it was well intentioned second rate artistry.
Here, the songwriting, the lyrical depth, and the vocal and instrumental virtuosity come together in a powerful, high energy musical statement. Matthew's vocal soar, Dan Huff plays a power guitar as only he can do, Lee Jones' bass work is VERY funky, and Jim Tenneboe's 80's period keyboard work is very tasty!
"Red and Yellow, Black and White" is a funky re-make based on the children's song of the same name, celebrating the ethnic diversity of God's people. "Armed and Dangerous", and "Put on the Armor" with their metaphorical references to warfare are based on Ephesians 6:10-18, where we are encouraged to "Put on the full armor of God.." so we can "stand firm..." in the faith. "Glory to God" is a majestic anthem to the God who rescues us in times of doubt and fear. "Love" is a passionate tear jerker for anyone who's ever had a child of their own to pray over. This is perhaps the biggest "hit" from this album, as Matthew prays for his daughter to someday see that "Love is calling out her name", just as his own mother once prayed over him. The chorus expresses the often forgotten Christian reversal of the world's principles, in the idea that "Love has the power to make the weakest man tower, to make the strongest man cower..." There is not a weak song on this album.
An altogether fantastic and overlooked recording. Definitely on my alltime top 100.

"Choice" First Choice.......2004-07-04
Although I disagree with Mr. Pacheco's comparison of First Choice to The Hues Corporation, this CD is very nice. This is the entire "Armed & Extremely Dangerous" lp (although not sequenced the same) as it was released in 1973 with some extras. First Choice fans will know the obvious extra is the inclusion of "The Player", from their 1974 lp of the same name. What isn't obvious is that Unidisc has the two early hits, "Smarty Pants" and "Armed & Extremely Dangerous", presented in the 'extended' versions, not the original lp lengths. Nice surprise, letting you hear that young 'Philly Machine' in action before it's later, almost universal disco presence.
TRACK LIST:
1. LOVE & HAPPINESS 6:58
2. SMARTY PANTS 5:17
3. NEWSEY NEIGHBORS 6:08
4. ARMED & EXTREMELY DANGEROUS 4:58
5. ONE STEP AWAY 3:12
6. THE PLAYER 7:15
7. RUNNIN' OUT OF FOOLS 3:34
8. THIS IS THE HOUSE 3:00
9. A BOY NAMED JUNIOR 3:44
10. WAKE UP TO ME 3:48
11. THIS LITTLE WOMAN 3:51
My reason for only 4 Stars: "Guilty", in it's vocal and instrumental versions should have, could have been included in this pre-Salsoul label compilation. Why are we always short-changed?
Early disco music doesn't get any better than this.......2003-10-16
This album was originally released in 1973. There is something about early 70's disco music that makes it special. Perhaps it is the very fact that the term "disco" wasn't being widely used yet. This was still a danceable and enjoyable brand of soul music, but without the cliches that eventually made it all sound alike. First Choice is best remembered for upbeat numbers like "Smarty Pants", "Newsy Neighbors" and the title track. But you should also check the lovely ballads "A Boy Named Junior" and "Wake Up To Me". This is a beautiful album as a whole. In a way, First Choice reminds me of the Hues Corporation (check my reviews for their albums), another band in a similar style that also released its debut album in 1973 and had far more good songs than it is remembered for.

Could've been better.........2005-10-05
This is a tight mixtape, but as my title says,"it could've..."; about 25% of the album contains songs off his other albums, with i believe 2 off his latest. The album also gives air time to the rest of the S.A.S crew, Mitchy Slick( Big Ups to SD619!)& Phil tha Agony are off the chain as lyricists, Krondon's aight, and Xzibit, well it's X to tha MUTHAPHUKKIN Z. Peep this album out.
Also just know that throughout the album, theirs an annoying ass promoter saying " Weapons of mass destruction, from Xzibit coming Dec.2004!", in my opinion it kills the song when you're playing it loud, think DJ Clue.

This should be called Big Noyd's greatest features All the best tracks is all the Mobb Deep collabos. Basically the whole album is hot if you a Mobb fan. If you like that gangsta sh*t this is for you.
If you like this I also recommend these;
Cormega; The realness & true meaning
Mobb deep; Shook ones & hell on earth
Queens Bridge finest
Prodigy; HNIC
Tragedy Khadafhi; any of his s***
Kool G. Rap; any of his s*** too.
4.5 star - .......2005-02-24
Why it is called a best of album I don't know, since at the time of its release he only put out one 8 song CD. It still is a good album. A lot of tracks are off Mobb Deep albums and a few off Cormega, Infamous Mobb, and other Big Noyd albums. A few of the songs are just Big Noyd's verses off of songs he was on, but a few rare songs are on here as well such as:
Downfall, Facts of Life, That's Me, Where Do We Go (off a J Love mixtape from '97), Armed & Dangerous, Shit That He Said (off "Violator" album), Don't Get Blow, the classic "Grimy Way" (off "Lyricist Lounge Vol. 2"), Hoodlum (off "Hoodlum soundtrack"), The Professional (off DJ Clue's "The Professional"), and Claim To Be.
It is a 27 song 80 minute album so fans of Noyd or QB rap should definitely get a copy, J Love does ad-libs over the songs on a few of them and it gets a little annoying but still a must have album
