While "progressive bluegrass" might sound like an oxymoron, it's a good description of this dynamic acoustic trio's approach. Fans of traditional string-band music might flinch at Nickel Creek's experimentation, but there is little doubt that the threesome has attracted the largest crossover audience to the genre since Jerry Garcia. Still, the rigors of working together since they were teens have prompted an open-ended sabbatical at the end of their 2007 tour. Cue the Christmas 2006 hits package--it's the perfect time to cash in on the catalog with the band still hot as an active unit. Since Nickel Creek has recorded just three albums for Sugar Hill, it does seem a bit premature for this recap. But the label has done an admirable job by adding a bonus DVD of the act's seven videos and arranging the audio tracks in non-chronological order to enhance the flow. If anyone had any doubts that these youngsters were the future of bluegrass, Reasons Why should erase them. They never let their instrumental virtuosity on guitar, fiddle, and mandolin get in the way of writing terrific material such as "When in Rome"--a should-have-been hit on the order of R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion"--and they also deliver the goods in concert. A nine-minute live version of "The Fox"--one of two previously unreleased performances that close this collection--proves they can mash up Bach, Bill Monroe, and Dylan with such cool aplomb, one can only imagine what the future holds. Until then, we have this compact reminder of Nickel Creek's strengths and potential--a superb collection that is as classy and challenging as the group itself, and leaves the listener wanting more. --Hal Horowitz

Saw this group at Stagecoach fest in Coachella, CA. The lyrical parts are sometimes thought provoking, but the music steals the show. These young musicians are amazing and truly goosebump material. Harmonies are dead on and whoever mixed this stuff should produce every known band! Even if you don't like country or bluegrass, this disc is a breath of FRESH AIR! The bonus DVD is a nice addition. Sara Watkins is cuter than a daisy. Too bad so many listen to the pre-packaged garbage on the radio today... These guys should be on top!

I am a huge fan of Nickel Creek, have enjoyed them live, and own all their albums. Because of this, I would buy this set just for the live versions of "move that mountain" and "the fox". I already owned all the other songs on various albums, and was hoping for more live material. However, the DVD music videos are just okay, and the lighthouse song is truncated severely in the video. I was hoping for concert footage here too, rather than VH1/CMT videos. Oh well. The smoothie song video is a fun idea...

This cd was defective. It was suppossed to have two cds but only one works and the other one is blank.
I have a very busy work schedule and it is a real hassle for me to take the time to return it so I have not even started the process.
This is why I hesitate to buy online for this very reason.

My wife found this group when she came across their song Robin & Marion. We fell in love with the music immediately. This is not you father's bluegrass band. They seem to draw from a myriad of influences and styles: a blend of bluegrass, Irish folk, DMB, and even some 60's American folk (think Simon and Garfunkel).
This particular collection, selected from all of their releases, is wonderful and serves as a good introduction to the trio and their music. The DVD portion of this only covers their music videos and I truly think they shine best in their live performances. I would have liked to have seen one or two of those included.

This CD/DVD set is the final chapter overview for Nickel Creek. Its members are now young adults. Of the 3, no doubt Chris Thile will forge a career, if he chooses, that will be as memorable as some of his mentors, viz Mike Marshall and Mark O'Connor.

This set is a great taste of a wonderful collective. God bless them all in future: good music, good souls and wonderful musical fellowship.

As a teacher of American History, I am always on the lookout for ways to inspire American allegiance in my fifth graders. My grown son told me about his own 5th grade teacher playing John Wayne's "America, Why I Love Her." Now that I have found and listened to the recording, I see why my son still remembers it (after 20 years!) This recording should be a part of every American History unit.

I bought this for my father, age 75, because I knew that his generation still appreciates a truly American perspective on things. The only negative is the description on the Amazon website that seems to almost apologize for selling this product due to its old fashioned content. The writer of that review is likely the type of bedwetting liberal that the Duke was talking about. Great product, timeless and true message.

Had this in LP. Lost it to hurricane Katrina. Now I have it in CD. Don't always agree with him but since he's gone I had to have it. To my knowledge the only recording he ever made. Worth owning just for that fact.

I'm not a huge fan of Fatboy Slim but this CD is great. Most of the songs you can hear all the time and there were a few I have not heard of at all. While most of these pay on commericals or in movies (mainstream) its good background music for parties.

Well, I had NO IDEA who he was. Until I listened to this CD and recognized almost EVERY SINGLE ONE of the songs on it! These songs have been in TV commercials, movies, etc. We bought one for my brother in law for Christmas. EXCELLENT CD!!!! If you want to get a Fatboy Slim CD, this is the one to get.

This is what happens when you compile the best songs of one of the best DJs ever. If you're a big fan, there's not much new here, and those who collect many CDs probably have most if not all of these tracks already. I've been a casual fan of Fatboy Slim for years, but have never delved into their entire body of work. However, since I picked up this CD, I've become addicted. Why Try Harder is a great into to Fatboy Slim. Give it a try, and I'm sure you'll love it too. BTW - the new track "That Old Pair of Jeans" is the best FBS track yet.

If you want to hear, enjoy, and show off to others the genius that is Fatboy Slim, here you go.

As Matthew Blissmer said in his review, this is a GREAT CD to put on for friends that don't want to hear the (often excessively) long versions of each of the songs. I always ran into that problem... I loved the songs but they had awkward lead-in and lead-outs. In "Why Try Harder?", ALL the songs are beautifully edited, starting and stopping at exactly perfect times for the full effect of the song. No minute-long lead-out for "Going Out of My Head", and "Brimful of Asha" (one of my favorites) is cut perfectly down to size from the 7:30 full cut.

I can put this in a CD player and hit Shuffle and not be nervous about hitting an embarrassing song. They're all great.

If you're new to Fatboy Slim, or you've been following him for years, it doesn't matter, this is your CD. Clean up all those illegally-downloaded albums and mixes you were too hesitant to purchase, because this has it all in one neatly packaged, easily-purchasable CD! Time to pay your respects to the totally awesome Norman Cook in this totally awesome collection. Why look harder?

Why Should the Fire Die? is Nickel Creek's first album without Alison Krauss in the producer's chair, and on it, the trio's genre-expanding acoustic music has shifted even farther away from its bluegrass origins. The opening "When in Rome" perfectly encapsulates the aggressive approach the band favors, and features poetic lyrics far more obtuse than those of most groups with similar roots. The disc's first half stays rooted in a fairly conventional folk mode, with a lovely cover of Bob Dylan's "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" (one of the few solo vocal turns from fiddler Sara Watkins) and "Jealous of the Moon" (cowritten with the Jayhawks' Gary Louris) obvious highlights.

But the album gradually grows darker. The songs take unexpected twists that are challenging and unconventional, while still emphasizing those angelic vocal harmonies that float and sting. Chris Thile's peppy instrumental "Stumptown" leads into the menacing "Best of Luck," with its edgy minor-key chorus echoed by Watkins's deceptively sweet voice spitting out lyrics of an obsessive high-school love affair gone wrong. And the drums of "Helena," one of the group's most radical compositions, bring out Nickel Creek's inner Coldplay. Not a complete break with their bluegrass beginnings, Why Should the Fire Die? is certainly the trio's boldest and most creative album, albeit one that might not appeal to their earliest fans. --Hal Horowitz

The lyrical content of this album is definitly darker than the first two, but those songs are easily complimented by some lighter tunes as well. They never cease to amaze me. It took a while to let this album grow on me, but eventually it did and I can't get enough of it. Favorite song: Helena...although the guy in the song is a complete jerk, it's still such a great song.

I had the albums "Nickelcreek and "This Side" on an mp3 disc that I recently listened to, and it reminded me how much I like this group. I wanted more. So I ordered "Why Should The Fire Die". VERY disappointing. It's not at all pleasant to my ears. It brings to mind the worst of the real weird stuff the Beatles occasionally came up with. If Alison Krause's involvement made that much difference, then they need Alison back! I can only hope that this album is a total flop for Nickelcreek so they'll go back to making that fantastic music they're known for. After this album, who knows, maybe the fire will indeed die.

Why Should the Fire Die? was the first Nickel Creek CD that i bought, but i have them all. and love them all. I think everyone should own this CD. Nickel Creek is probably my favorite band, seriously. go see them in concert if you are able, you wont regret it.

I had lost track with Blue Grass for a while. Ran into a friend and he got to talking about this CD. So I had to pick it up. It is a good sound, not the greatest of their efforts -- but it still has a nice sound. Worth the money and a great entry to Nickel Creek to those that don't listen to them yet.

"How about a bad title?" wonders Spencer Kayden's Little Sally in "Too Much Exposition." "That could kill a show pretty good." It's a tribute to the skill deployed by the Urinetown creative team (Mark Hollman, music and lyrics; Greg Kotis, book and lyrics) that its title doesn't kill the show. Set in a near-future in which water depletion has led to a ban on private toilets, this may be the only musical in history in which one of the leads makes a fortune on pee. But the show (which originated Off-Broadway before graduating to the big league) limits its subversive intent to subject matter and is refreshingly classic in approach and structure--think Weill-meets-Lewis Carroll. Backed by a small ensemble, the cast (with John Cullum in a turn nothing short of brilliant as the evil urinal magnate) has a field day with Kotis and Hollman's frequently hilarious score. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I'd heard such rave reviews about this musical, but kept passing on chances to see it. I was turned off by the title -- and this is strange for me, a person not afraid of scatological humor. But maybe I knew something I could not say.

The funniest thing about the musical, I am now convinced, is the premise. Urinetown is a place where you have to pay to pee. A conglomerate has taken over all toilet facilities, and if you don't pay, you don't pee -- unless you go into the bushes, and risk getting arrested.

But it's just not funny. It's supposed to be a satire, but it just doesn't work. Why? I don't know. But I listened to many songs on the CD, and none of them had that true spark that makes you want to laugh. The opening number is "Too Much Exposition" making fun of musicals that open by explaining too much with words instead of action. And perhaps this song is in there to deflect criticism for the main reason this musical doesn't work -- it's too busy explaining, instead of getting on with the business of being funny.

My humor tastes: I watch the Daily Show, Colbert Report, South Park, Dave Chappelle, Dane Cook (so-so), Frasier reruns. Never watched Friends, or Everybody Loves Raymond, or Family Guy, but did watch Seinfeld (although it's not funny to me anymore). The two most recent things I saw that made me laugh out loud were 1) Larry Wilmore doing his n*gg*r skit on Daily Show and 2)an early Chappelle episode where Sesame Street characters talk about drug use

I just recently discovered this gem of a musical. It's a stand out show with a unique touch. If heard a few outside musicals (The Rocky Horror Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch...) but this one stands out from them. The music is amazing, the lyrics are creative, and the humor is ripe.

With a chamber music-esque overture, the tone is set. 'Too Much Exposition' is a great introduction to Urinetown (the musical). Officer Lockstock addresses the audience about what they should expect from the show. Little Sally wants to let the audience in on the water shortage but Lockstock stops her. ("You're too young to understand it now, but nothing can kill a show like too much exposition." "How 'bout bad subject matter? Or a bad title, even? That could kill a show pretty good.")

I've read what others have written: you don't get the whole humor of the show unless you've seen it. I haven't seen it, but this recording is enough to get me see it. (That is, if a production nearby, even a high school production, is put on.)

This musical is a great piece for the 21st century no doubt, that being said it takes some getting used to. The musical cannot be taken at face value, there are lots of things happening under the surface and it takes some bites at things musical theater doesn't usually take, like itself. On the surface it is strange, and not really something people would listen to over and over. However, once you figure it out, it's fun to listen to it again to find all the things that are really going on. It is very funny, and says some good things about the current state of the world. For musical theater fans this is questionable, if you just like the toe-tapping happy go lucky feel, this isn't it. But if you like the social commentary that goes along with that toe tapping, this is a must. NOT FOR FIRST TIME BROADWAY LISTNERS. Favorite Song: "Look at the Sky"

My son, a high school senior, told me his first show of this year's theatrical season was going to be "Urinetown". My response was something like ... No, really, what shows are you doing this year? Then he brought home a recording of it, and I was hooked right away by the lyrics. Over the years my son has been involved in many performances, but he and the rest of the cast had a real blast preparing for, and performing, this show! He wanted Lockstock, but was cast as Cladwell ... Owned it ... Loved it!
I am no Broadway expert by any stretch of the definition, but this show is wonderfully entertaining! You will see (and hear) snippets from other shows, you will pick up on some of even the more subtle stabs at musicals as a whole, you will groan, you will laugh and you will enjoy ... But only if you try not to take it too seriously.
Get past the title (in this case I certainly think it did not "...kill a show pretty good"), relax, and be entertained. And for goodness sake, if you have a chance to see it performed live, do so! A musical that pokes fun at itself? Yes, a refreshing departure from the norm, and worth the price of admission.

Despite your album title not everybody was trying to imitate 10,000 Maniacs in 1993, and so therefore the title doesn't apply to you. If you wanted to just say you were recording an album then that's fine, but don't say you are doing this because everyone else is SO THERE!!!!!! Now that my venting over the title is over now onto serious business: "Linger" is my first introduction of the Cranberries, and let's just say that it was as bad as getting a manly handshake from a woman. The melody is despicable, and the lyrics are too, and it was one of the bad memories of the first months in FL. That's where I was first introduced to this, so I feel that if everyone was rocketing to the moon in their underpants would you?

I think this is a good album in the whole. Most of the songs are well written and well performed. The lead vocals do sound a bit the same after a while, but she has a nice voice so I don't mind hearing it over and over. I think this album still sounds good, it's better than most of the stuff out today.

In lieu of all of the recent negative reviews I've read, I feel this weird need to defend The Cranberries, and I don't know why.

So The Cranberries were a 90s band, sorry to all of you who think it's cool to rebel against gen x and hate the 90s. This cd doesn't sound dated really, just take a look at any given current 'indie' band, and you'll get pretty much a similar, softer sound to it. And even if one were able to identify this as a 90s band, this isn't horribly dependant on the age in which it was written like oh so many 80s pop/synth/rock acts.

I don't think anyone is going to accuse The Cranberries of being the most innovative, intelligent band ever, but they weren't trying to be. They made pop tunes and actually put a little heart into them, and thats a rare thing, I think. This is a very gorgeous, yet subtle cd; nothing is really going to jump out at you, and it may take more than one listen to really appreciate it.

I originally purchased this album over nine years ago and, although I liked the songs and Dolores O'Riordan's voice, I find myself rarely listening to it now. For me, the excessive radio airplay of the songs "Dreams" and "Linger" killed the longevity of the album as a whole. It seemed as though throughout most of the nineties a person couldn't listen to the radio, walk around in a shopping mall, or watch TV without hearing "Dreams" or "Linger" at least once, if not more than once. I must have heard those songs a hundred times at least. Now I groan internally whenever I hear them. To me, this album will always sound like the nineties, and, unfortunately, the nineties haven't been gone long enough to make me want to reminisce. The Cranberries were a great band and it is a shame that much of their subsequent output wasn't as good. This is not a terrible album by any means, it has just been, to use a photographic term, overexposed.

Yes, Dolores O'Riordan has a beautiful voice. Yes, many of the tunes here waft delicately and create a slightly melancholy ambiance.

The problem is that the songs rest TOO heavily on her voice without the songwriting to carry it. Too few of these tunes have solid bankable hooks that draw you back to them again and again and that counts against the longevity of this in the end.

In addition, the lilting quality of O'Riordan's voice takes on a near yodel affectation at times that means her singing style may take some getting used to. That's not to say this album is "bad"..just that much of it possesses a tendency to bleed into the background.

HIGHLIGHTS:
Driving drums and shimering guitar made "Dreams" a big hit as was the string-kissed "Linger". Outside of those, "Still Can't.." and "How" with its "Never before and never again" chorus settle in with repeated listening. It closes on a nice note with the otherworldly soaring backing vocals on "Put Me Down".

LOWS:
"I Still Do" is a prime example of a tune that I just can't recall once it stops playing and it was allowed to set the stage for the disc. While that's truth in advertising at its most extreme, it certainly doesn't start the CD to best advantage.

BOTTOM LINE:
A great voice can't carry songs on its own and this album is hit and miss but the best bits are majestic. Definitely one I'd borrow from a friend first before buying, though.

Cosby sounds fired up on this live one. "Kindergarten" kicks off the disc in fine fashion with the soon-to-be TV star's spot-on and kid-centered description of early grammar school. Cosby accurately captures the strangeness of a time when a lot of things don't quite make sense and you are constantly being told what to do. "Personal Hygiene" and "Shop" take us through junior high before we arrive at the comedian's tales of young adulthood on the disc's last five tracks. "Hofstra" closes the CD with an eight-minute depiction of a very bad college football team before and during another humiliating game. Cosby manages to turn the awful team's terror and suffering into an occasion for laughs. Like other Cosby albums from the '60s, Why Is There Air? is full of the comic's highly effective sound effects. --Fred Cisterna

My sister and brothers enjoyed this album (yes, it was an LP then) for the first time in the '60's. We have such fond memories of it that we still quote it at each other. ("Yeah, your mother must be pretty low-down. . . ." "Thank God for this break.") So my sister and I were overjoyed to find that somebody had put Bill Cosby's classic stand-up on CD.

The quality of the recording is wonderful: we can hear Cosby's masterful use of his microphones, the response of the audience and, of course, our own laughter. Among my favorite sketches is the last one (I think): "Hofstra," the story about the televised college football game. When I was a kid, I thought this was a name Cosby had made up! Another is the very brief description of Lombard Street, the treacherous road in San Francisco. But what made me laugh till tears ran down my cheeks was the description of kindergarten and [...]. (I thought about Cosby, giggling, the last time I entered a school-supply store for parents and teachers.)

If you liked any of the Cosby shows, this recording is a must-hear --a must-OWN, in fact.

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Bill Cosby: Cosby's First Tour de Force.......2007-03-01

Bill Cosby's third attempt, WHY IS THERE AIR?, is a true comedy gem. Jerry Seinfeld attributes his desire to go into comedy as largely stemming from listening to this album. Perhaps what I enjoy the most about this third attempt is that it is the first album in which we get to hear Bill develop his bits for several minutes. With more room to work (almost forty minutes on this album), Cosby chooses to develop only eight bits. (Compare that to his second album, "I STARTED OUT AS A CHILD," in which Cosby squeezes an amazing 15 tracks into thirty minutes). Given the expanded length of the tracks, we get to hear Cosby develop his routines and his storytelling style really begins to take shape. Cosby simply can't be enjoyed in one minute segments. The power of his later albums is his ability to build you up across several routines to the point where you are rolling in the aisles.

In Cosby's second album, "I STARTED OUT AS A CHILD," only the first few tracks explored Bill Cosby's childhood. The rest of the album was still dedicated to the kind of observational comedy that defined his first album BILL COSBY IS A VERY FUNNY FELLOW RIGHT?. In this third album, Cosby begins to fully explore the themes that would define the rest of his comedic life. Almost the entire album is dedicated to Cosby's humorous and universal stories. Where we do find observational comedy, it is always placed in the context of Bill's life.

"Kindergarten" is an oft-forgotten piece about, well, you guessed it: Kindergarten. I recently listened to it and was instantly reminded of several episodes of the THE COSBY SHOW, since much of the material was used in Rudy's school experiences. My favorite line is when Cosby remarks on how difficult it was to go to school the first day, but by the second day he was totally cool: "Goodbye, Mother. Take care of yourself, won't you dear? I should be home...oh...12:30...quarter to one...somewhere around there. I might be late...I may have a little milk with the boys, you know what I mean? Tell Dad I'll see him around dinnertime."

"Shop" is a classic routine found on a few other collections in which Cosby reflects on his horrible performance in shop class, a practical joke, and a shop teacher who likes to get personal with personal insults. "Baby" is a hilarious piece about having children and the different perspectives men and women have on the subject of being pregnant. "Driving in San Francisco" is another classic routine in which Cosby pokes fun at the ridiculous hills in San Francisco.

"Hofstra" is a very interesting piece in virtue of the fact that it appeared, in a less developed version, on Cosby's second album. That track, titled "TV Football," is good, but lacks the development and polish that "Hofstra" shows. By listening to both and comparing, you can tell how much Cosby has worked the bit (in live performances) and developed it into an eight minute routine. It is fantastic and an interesting window into Cosby's comedic development.

In sum, Cosby is in complete control in WHY IS THERE AIR?. This album is a comedy classic and, together with REVENGE and WONDERFULNESS, is perhaps Cosby's best work. I highly recommend it for all ages.

Long before the Cosby show, and even before "Bill Cosby, Myself" there were the LP recordings of the 60's. Excerpts were played on the radio and we were rolling in stitches then. If you missed it, or even if you remember them -- these recordings are essential in your humor library. If you enjoy zany "self-inflicted" humor, you might also try Ken Nordine's "Word Jazz" collection.

All stand up comedy should be this funny. Cosby reminds us that comedy does not have to be turned off when young children enter the room. This recording will entertain even the most stubborn middle school kid. It is a reflection of Bill in his early teens in health class then moves to playing football on the losing team and onto his famous description of his wife's labor pains.

This is classic Cosby stand-up. Highly recommended.

Bill Cosby exists to entertain. From his "discovery" on I, Spy, which broke ground on tv and in the real world establishing the fact that, yes, white can be friends with black, and THEN, establishing that, hey, that guy's funny no matter what color he is! 'Why is there Air?' is another trip down memory lane for Cosby, regaling us with his hilarious reminiscences of 'Kindergarten' and 'Shop' and 'Driving in San Francisco.'

Much has been made in Sinead O'Connor fan circles and the pop music press about the controversy-courting singer's decision to revive her self-shelved career with a disc of reggae covers. After the critical breakthrough that was 2002's Sean-Nos Nua, an album of traditional Irish tunes artfully reimagined, a jaunt through Jamaica carried the whiff of a stunt--there she goes banging the drum of defiance again, went the popular gripe, just when the world had widely concurred it liked her riffling through the dustbins of her own musical roots. On closer inspection, though, O'Connor's sabbatical to Burning Spear country makes a lot of sense: rewind to 1992, when she famously ripped a picture of the Pope on "Saturday Night Live," and the memory that it was Bob Marley's "War" that struck her as suitable tearing music clicks into place. What Throw Down Your Arms reveals more than anything is that the rasta spirit has never fully left O'Connor. Separating "religious music" from "music about God," O'Connor gracefully insinuates herself into each of these songs, imbuing some (the sparsely done "Jah Nuh Dead," "Marcus Garvey," "War") with characteristic fire and indignation and others, including the title track and the charming "Curly Locks," with a fully realized and oddly audible sense of enlightenment. Significantly, her signature Irish lilt is fully tact here; it's her sole white-girl spin on a series of universally appealing, otherwise untouched songs. Groundbreaking producers Sly & Robbie and a real-deal reggae backing band lively up the proceedings without peeling away the message. --Tammy La Gorce

This is a great reggae album by Sinead, who shines at pretty much everything she does. I don't know if this is true for all copies of this CD, but mine came copy-protected, meaning that it can only be played... and not installed into iTunes etc. to be part of your collection. Great album though... and great artist!

It seems that I am in the opposite boat to most of the reviewers here: I am actually not a big fan of Sinead O'Connor. I heard her sing The Foggy Dew with the chieftans and loved it, but was disappointed with Sean Nos Nua because it was filled with computerized pop reworkings of traditional Irish songs. I thought my 12 seconds of fandom were over. Then I heard her singing Downpressor Man on an independent radio station and was blown away. She drives home all of her classic reggae covers and takes you down to the roots. It is produced by the legendary riddum section Sly Dunbar (drums) and Robbie Shakespeare (bass) both of whom played with Peter Tosh and Bob Marley as well as many other artists. The songs are sung with a powerfull conviction that can only come from a true respect for reggae/rastas. The expertise of Sly and Robbie cement Sinead's talent in a bedrock history. Hypnotic, chilling, and at other times warm and inviting, Sinead's voice is stellar and completely unaffected. If you like classic reggae this album is worth listening to.

I am a HUGE Sinéad O'Connor fan, and I think she's one of the most underrated performers of my generation (probably due to her political/social views, which conflict with much of intolerant America). Plus--she has been a little flaky--lesbian today, pastor tomorrow, etc. Still, this album leaves me lukewarm. There are some catchy tunes like "Vampire," but in general the songs sound like a singer outside her element.

Sinéad's hook for me has been her ability to elicit strong emotions: pain, injustice, love, longing. This collection doesn't do this much for me.

Respect to Sinead O'connor everytime. This CD is great, the selections of songs are some of my favorites. Her remake of Door Peep, Y mas Gan, and Prophet has Arise are amazing. I defenitly recommend this CD

No one can ever accuse O'Connor of being an insincere artist. She took what (for most anyone else) would be a "you gotta be kidding me" concept and made a drop-dead serious effort. Only someone with buckets of talent could pull such a thing off.

Luckily, O'Connor has never lacked for talent, though she may have lacked for timing. The woman is indeed, as most critics and All Music Guide note, one of the greatest "born" singers to emerge in 20th century pop. She's also had extensive experience with reggae fusions to great success in her strong back-catalogue. People apparently forget that she's still sold 20 million records in spite of the "Pope thing." Her ability to successfully fuse styles was outright pioneering in the late 80s and beyond.

That said, this is a flat-out "religious-experience" record. O'Connor fakes nothing here, from the non-mainstream (but *choice*) reggae/rasta tunes she is covering, to the classic line-up of authentic studio players (recorded with Sly & Robbie at Tuff Gong, for heaven's sake). O'Connor has always been able to throw darts at God and spiritual themes...this album lets her go full-throttle. The opening rendition of "Jah Nuh Dead" is creepy in the best way you could imagine. It's her statement that she means every word she sings. Her soul and passion on every song is the ticket here: sensuous on a great "Curly Locks," firing on Babylon with "Downpressor Man." The title track is, again, spotlessly sung, produced, rendered, you-name-it.

The downside? You have to either really like Sinead O'Connor or really like reggae music and its message. The sounds alone are great for any ear, but at heart (on sleeve) this is a serious work, and not for the casual listener at all. I champion O'Connor's bold talent and, some day, in a rational world, this woman will be given the major props she has earned.

Also, I'm really disappointed that O'Connor is allowing cigarettes to start hacking away at that unbelievable voice. It's evident on virtually every song. Her timbre and resilience has suffered, and it's a crying shame, given that her calling card has always been the pristine, multi-octave tone of her vocal instrument. It's also clearly the cigs that are doing it. But she hasn't lost a shred of soul. This very good, very worthy album is proof. Buy it as an O'Coonor fan or a fan of REAL reggae, and you'll be utterly thrilled. There's no middle ground... otherwise it's a complete novelty.

Rent is usually treated as Jonathan Larson's one and only show, but the truth is that he had a career--albeit a hitless one--before that blockbuster. There was a musical titled JP Morgan Saves the Nation with lyrics by Jeffrey M. Jones and music by Larson. And there was Tick, Tick... Boom!, an autobiographical piece that Larson workshopped for a while before setting it aside and finishing Rent.

In 2001, Tick, Tick is getting a full off-Broadway production, and it's a rather endearing one. Lyrics have never been Larson's strong point, but he was a hell of a melodic composer--and the score here is even poppier than that of Rent (think Top 40 rather than Sondheim). It's hard to pick favorite songs: "Green Green Dress" is built on a rollicking piano boogie, for instance, and "Real Life" and "See Her Smile" are the kind of elegiac ballad that Larson would later perfect with "Seasons of Love." 5 out of 5 stars A Vocally Dazzling Esparza Rides High on an Exuberant Pre-"Rent" Larson Score.......2007-06-16

Perhaps it's a coincidence that the immensely talented Raúl Esparza plays a character dreading his 30th birthday in this 2001 recording of the hit off-Broadway show by the late Jonathan Larson, while five years later, he would play the elliptical Bobby dreading his 35th birthday in the enthralling 2006 Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Company. In both performances, Esparza shows a true affinity for capturing the angst of men undergoing transitional points in their lives which render them emotionally paralyzed. At first glance, Sondheim and Larson would not seem like kindred spirits, but both share a gift for sophisticated lyrics in an unmistakable musical style defined by their oeuvres. Larson even pays tribute to Sondheim in the story's climax and with the sardonic, work-is-hell "Sunday", a take-off of the song with the same name in Sunday in the Park with George.

However, it is the familiar Larson sound of Rent that is heard most in this score - driving, rock-out rhythms with unavoidable pop hooks and yearning, piano-driven ballads. Even the opener, "30/90", is a virtual sound-alike of the bigger show's title tune. If the songs are not quite as polished or even memorable as those in Rent, they feel more personal because the autobiographical story is far more intimate in scale. Set in 1990 in the same SoHo neighborhood as Rent, it's a simple three-character piece about Jon, an aspiring composer who considers giving up his dreams on the verge of his 30th birthday. With charismatic fire, Esparza is equally adept using his beautifully expressive voice in a rock milieu as in a Sondheim character study. He brings energetic brio to finger-snapping rockers like the Twinkie-induced "Sugar" and especially shines on the ballads, "See Her Smile" and the revelatory "Why".

With a slightly pinched voice that reminds me a bit of the Bangles' Susanna Hoffs, Amy Spanger as girlfriend Susan duets nicely with Esparza on the touching "Johnny Can't Decide", the rocking "Green Green Dress", and the comical self-help wordplay of "Therapy". Her shining solo moment comes with the knockout ballad, "Come to Your Senses". As Jon's embattled pal Michael, Jerry Dixon provides powerful vocals, bringing particular warmth to "Real Life" and grit to the fed-up rave "No More". The trio closes the show powerfully with the anthem-like "Louder Than Words". The overall score is a bit derivative and a tad too earnest, but the youthful zest of the cast and Larson's pop craftsmanship more than compensate. Two bonus tracks are offered at the end - an instrumental replay of the opener, "30/90 Playout" and a rare recording of Larson singing "Boho Days" a capella with propulsive hand claps.

If you are a fan of the late great Mr. Larson you will love this music. Okay, I have seen the play a couple of times so I know what happens between the songs but this, his autobiography, really moved me. Even my kids like the Green Dress Song.

I hope you like it... The theme is "Actions Speak Louder Than Words" rings true today as the day he wrote it.

I saw this play a few weeks ago, and really enjoyed the music, so I got the CD. The voices, and lyrics are amazing! However, as I often find with CDs of musicals, there wasn't always the right feeling in the voice, particularly in "Therapy" where couple ought to be angry at each other, and it seems more cute on the CD.

I love Tick, Tick... Boom! The show is quite refreshing. The show works so well with three actors. I LOVE "30/90" and "Louder Than Words." Both speak really strongly to the audience because they both are really relatable to anyone's life. Admittedly the middle of the show drags a little, and Spangler's voice can be chipmunkish at times. However those are minor detractions when it comes to this show. It is especially moving if you know Jonathan's story. It is no Rent, but the short piece is really moving

I was soo soo very pleased with the music from "Tick...Tick..BOOM!". Rock Operas are my favorite type of musical theatre, and i must say this is one of the best. The storyline, however, although dealing with bohemian problems like AIDS, rehersals, love, didnt meet the power of the music. It was taken from Johnathans original one-man show and made into a three-man show. This was the only way possible to make this conversion, but still it was a dull storyline only going over the time period of one day in the day in the life of Johnathan Larson. Yes, it was an important day, his thirtieth birthday and his friend annoucing that he is HIV positive, but none of this happens until the end. The show lacks obsession, and in order to make a good musical storyline there has to be an obsession. Luckily, the weak storyline is backed with fantastic music, perhaps even better than Rent. 30/90 is my all time favorite song EVER i have listened to it over and over and still am not sick of it. other favorite tracks include:

Kristin Chenoweth won a Tony for the supporting role of Sally Brown in the 1999 revival of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, made a memorably vampy Lily in the 1999 television film of Annie, and had an NBC sitcom created for her, Kristin! Now she grabs the spotlight in Let Yourself Go, her first solo recording. She mixes torchy standards ("My Funny Valentine," "How Long Has This Been Going On?") with Faith Prince-style sauciness ("If"), gets to show off her operatic and scat chops in the miniplay "The Girl in 14G," and shares a light duet with Jason Alexander (reviving his musical theater career post-Seinfeld). Perhaps her "Stranger Here Myself" isn't the weightiest you've ever heard, but this is an enjoyable album with a good deal of old-fashioned class, expertly accompanied by Rob Fisher and the Coffee Club Orchestra. --David Horiuchi

Do I mean the best album or the best singer? You are correct if you said both! I saw Kristin Chenoweth on a PBS show "Broadway's Best at the Pops," (though it was not the first time I had heard her) and decided to check out the offerings here. This is a collection of the kind of music and performances I love. She has a great range, a precise pitch, and a great style that is at the same time true to the music and to herself. In an era when singers try to outdo each other re-interpreting the composer's original work, not usually with great success, she is a blessing!

After watching Candide endlessly and going to see Ms. Chenoweth in The Apple Tree, I was hungry for something more portable to listen to. At times this fits the bill, but what surprised me the most is how thin her voice comes across on this recording. Perhaps it was the joy of seeing her live that has ruined this listener; perhaps I need to upgrade my aging music system. Then again, maybe the recording is just not as good as Ms. C singing Bernstein or as good as staring at Ms. C command a Broadway stage.

I truly enjoy listening to this CD. Kristin Chenoweth's vocal style and abilities are very well-matched to the songs selected for this album. If you enjoy classic, older-style Broadway/popular tunes, I would highly recommend this CD. Ms. Chenoweth has a bright, expressive voice and does a fantastic job with this material.

As with any full-length CD, there are a couple of songs I am not as crazy about, but that has to do with the songs themselves, not Ms. Chenoweth's vocal performance. Overall, I love this album and have listened to it several times now, since receiving it as a Christmas gift last month.

Kristin Chenoweth brings new life to some timeless Broadways tunes while introducing a few wonderful new ones. This high pitched vocal goddess effortlessly provides for a nearly flawless and easy listening experience. I definitly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys jazz vocals, showtunes, or just a new spin on some old classics.
