Heavy Metal at his best.......2007-02-05

This is a great heavy metal gem from the 80's. Don't be fooled by all the self called "true metalhead" that hate Ron Keel because his country phase. He was one of the greatest singers of the eighties, and this record proves it.
This band should have been big. Just listen the record and you will undertand my point.
The songs are great. This is straight heavy metal direct to your veins. The guitar riffs are amazing (great work Yngwie).
The Album is pure history, you gotta have it. Check out the song "no way out".

An early flex of the Yngwie stratocastor!.......2006-08-22

Lets state the bleeding obvious from the word go. Only two types of people are going to think of buying this. Yngwie fans and Ron Keel devotees and methinks there ain't many of the latter. Anyhow as a sort of archive document of the young Yngwies career this isn't a bad curio for fans to pick up. A few pertinent points would be:

There are a few awesome solos here, Yngwie being able to blow so many others off the stage at the drop of a hat, the instrumental track being a case in point, as is the solo of On the Rox.

The actual bulk of the album is fairly numbskull stuff - as one reviewer remarked 'Keel has little to say except how ready to rock he is'.

Malmsteen gets a writing credit on only two tracks; No Way Out and Abduction, most of the rest being written by Keel and drummer Mark Edwards (both of whom presumably get royalties to this day due to Yngwies devotees buying this album).

As for an album to buy for historical value for Yngwie fans, hey jump in as the material is more mainstream rock than most of Malsteens solo stuff so it's a little different. But as a general album of hard rock, well it's great for playing on you car stereo down the highway but in the cold hard light of day this is only an average album. Formative tunes for both Keel and Malmsteen.

Yngwie's first studio album.......2006-03-29

The bad: the songs on this album are the typical "C" class metal that was out in the Los Angeles club scene in the early 80's. Yngwie's solos don't even fit the songwriting style. The songs are based on the typical power chords with neo-classical solos blazing through the progressions. The album does encapsulate that period of time though, and that alone might be of some interest.

The good: Yngwie's first studio album. Yngwie's amazing guitar work on the intro to "Hot on Your Heels". Yngwie gives us a glimpse of the runs that we eventually hear on his later work as well as some great runs that we never hear again.

In short, buy it if you're big Yngwie fan. Otherwise, it's not worth the $$.

A Musical Inflection Point.......2005-10-30

If you're a fan of underground 80's metal or ever came to love the guitar mastery of Yngwie J. Malmsteen, then this is a must have. Although Ron Keel became comical (like many hairband musicians) later in his career, it all came together on this one. The songs are great, Keel's voice works, and Yngwie makes his world debut as a true musical phenom. I bought the vinyl when it was released and over 20 years later still can't forget the jaw dropping moment when I first heard Yngwie's solo leading into "Hot on Your Heels." Glad to see this is still available on CD....

To suggest that this is an awesome album begs the question: Have you heard any other albums before? This is 80s LA metal at its most embarrassing. Do your self a favor and pass on this one.

Axel Rudi Pell's 4th and last Steeler album!.......2004-07-24

Don't be mistaken! There were 2 Steeler's back in the day- the one from the States with Malmsteen and Keel and then this version from Germany with Ritchie Blackmore disciple Axel Rudi Pell manning the six strings. Undercover Animal is one molten beast of a record! I mean big stadium-sized guitar riffs and glorious hooks galore make for pure gladness, start to finish! Total 1988 personification of glamrock done up the way it should be- catchy, midpaced, with the requisite ballad, "The Deeper the Night." Gotta admit I had low expectations shelling out 20+ bucks for this used import but was overjoyed when I heard what Axel and the boyz had cooked up for us before he dropped the band like a bad habit and went solo (very successfully! I might add). This particular Steeler sounds a bit confused, trying to maintain it's heavy metal swagger while trying to attain the almighty stamp of commercial approval. Apparently this confusion led to Axel's departure not so soon after writing begin for a projected fifth Steeler album. I don't blame him as the idea of party metal can only go so far before it gets trite and played out. So our German Steeler goes kapoot on what I perceive as a high note, tracks such as "(I'll Be) Hunter or Hunted," "Rely on Rock," and the title track more than adequately carrying the banner for an era most people would rather bury than celebrate!-David J Newman 2004

This a great album with must have songs like Backseat Driver, Cold day in hell, On the Rox, and Out to get you. The bad news is that the live songs on this album are of poor sound quality.

Ok, this CD is a great archive of material of one of the most popular bands of the early 80's metal club circuit. It does fall short in a couple of areas though. The original single version of "Cold Day in Hell" is great, but it would have been better to have some of the songs from the original Steeler CD on this compliation just for the sound quality. What you get here are demo versions and live versions of the songs from the original release in sub par quality. The live versions are barely passable. You would need to be a serious Keel/Steeler/Yngwie Malmsteen to buy this CD.
