Customer Reviews:
Great Movie...AMAZING SOUNDTRACK to match!!!.......2007-02-14
It's taken me a while to track down this SOUNDTRACK and I'm greatly pleased that it has been re-released in an EXPANDED version. Trying to locate an original version was geeting to be crazy, especially with the prices some folks were asking. OUTRAGES!!
I purchased this soundtrack over a week ago and it has not left my cd player in the car...never tiresome, NEVER BORING...I even find myself humming the tunes when there is no music what so ever. I've enjoyed listening to Basil Poledouris productions for many years, such as Lonesome Dove,Hunt for Red October, Free Willy among other noteables!
With Basil Poledouris' death, I believe we have lost a true "One of a kind composer". His powerful themes for many soundtracks will be greatly missed in the world of movies and music. I for one will miss his magic within the movie world!
Purchase the cd, YOU WON'T BE DISSAPOINTED!

Customer Reviews:
Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

While Hollywood franchises often stick to one composer as a way to establish continuity, the three X-Men movies have gone to three different musicians. And yet, the sound has remained remarkably homogenous; in other words, if you enjoyed Michael Kamen and John Ottway's scores for the first and second installments, respectively, you'll get a kick out of what John Powell has come up with for the third. Though he adopted a more contemporary, electronic-inflected sound on actioners The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy, here Powell goes for the full symphonic treatment. What's most interesting is his use of a 45-member chorus, which is surprisingly varied. On "Jean and Logan," the choir delicately hovers above the strings, almost out of reach, but on "Rejection Is Never Easy," it weaves in and out in a rather spooky manner, and it unleashes at full blast on the CD's climax, "Phoenix Rises," a six-minute-plus opus that at times sounds like a weird cross between sacred music and Philip Glass. This is one of the best big-budget scores of the year. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

X-travagant Score to the Third Installment.......2007-02-26
As Michael Kamen provided a rushed, unfocused score to the first X-Men film and John Ottman provided a much better and more thematic score to the second installment, John Powell continues along the same lines as Ottman did, only much larger in scope. For X3, Powell beefed up the brass and percussion sections, providing a dynamic, heroic sound.
This album neatly divides into 2 halves, with the first half consisting mostly of suspense and ominous music with some outstanding orchestral and choral outbursts and the second half consisting of non-stop action music that never lets up until the final note. The first two scores provided a main theme for the X-Men that sounded consistent throughout both scores, even though the themes were different and from different composers. Powell manages to do the same here, providing a powerful march, complete with your typical brass fanfares you would expect and can be found in "Bathroom Titles", "St. Lupus Day", "Attack on Alcatraz", and "The Last Stand." The percussion section is very reminiscent of John Williams' Superman theme here.
Dark Phoenix has a theme, performed mainly on the strings, which can be found in "Dark Phoenix's Tragedy", "The Battle of the Cure", and "Phoenix Rises". Angel has a theme too, which is found in a few sections in the score and is a heroic, uplifting motif for brass. The action music, which begins in "Cure Wars" and finishes out the album is an all-out, pounding, orchestral and choral battle. Here, the various sections of the orchestra compete with each other with several different motifs going on all at once, most likely draining the musicians' stamina, while the chorus wails throughout the orchestral frenzy. It is music that will definitely wear you out after a while.
All in all, a powerful score that in my opinion, is the best score of the X-Men franchise.
A good way to send off a great franchise!!.......2006-08-17
I've been a huge fan of the X-Men movies and their soundtracks ever since I saw the first movie. When I saw X-Men: The Last Stand I have to admit that I didn't like the music. I found it to be too loud. When I went to see the movie a second time I was able to appreciate it a bit more and I found some themes very good. Once I bought the CD I fell in love with it. I still find some parts a bit too loud but overall it's good. My favorite theme in the entier CD is the Phoenix theme. (Played best in #14. Dark Phoenix's Tragedy and #26. Phoenix Rises) It is one of the best themes I've heard in a long time. I still hold the soundtrack to X2: X-Men United as the best of the three films but this one is one of my favorite soundtracks I have.
"Powell versus K-Men": The Last Stand !.......2006-08-07
What else is left to say about this big great soundtrack album? An outstanding emotional score composed by one of the biggest in this business - John Powell. I agree with an earlier reviewer who said that all the action and emotion of the third movie installment of this Marvel series has been captured marvellous good in this play of violins and other great instruments on CD. The orchestral arrangements are the most powerful on this third score. While Michael Kamen still made a very good job and owns all of my respect as my favorite composer, this third release still has its very own big ones: "The Funeral" track is my favorite on this whole album, not to mention the main theme "The Last Stand", which both play very well eventhough they ain't as much dramatic as the score tracks for the high action sequences. Also I think we all loved the "Jean and Logan" part that reminded me personally a lot of K-Men's last track for X-Men "Logan and Rogue", which still is the most loved and most harmonic arrangement of violins I've ever heard yet! And no, I'm not kidding!
Powell still made a good job though (watch my rating for this album), and yet it doesn't ecstasize me as much as the K-Men score did with its last track "Logan & Rogue"! Some scores go well with the film, but completely fail at listening when heard by themselves. I think at K-Men's position we had the perfect precedent for exactly the other way around: K-Men's score flew over the top as it was too good for X-Men 1 or in other words: X-Men 1 wasn't worth a score like the one K-Men finally delivered it! The problem with the first installment of the X-Men series was that most of the budget has been focussed at effects and characters only. The filmmakers spared a lot at the script conception and focussed only on the events that lead up to the romance or to what we call a father-daughter-relationship between Logan/Wolverine and Marie/Rogue. That's exactly where K-Men marched in with a whole orchestra and dramatized the emotional scenes which even the actors could not do better; e.g. when Wolverine rescues Rogue on the top of the Statue of Liberty and saves her life. I know it must be scathing for a director to hear that the only thing useful in his movie was the soundtrack, but it's possibly more ecstatic for the very composer to hear that his score pushes the action back into background and takes on the actual leading role of the movie!
With X-Men 3: The Last Stand all that has changed: We have action sequences as big as the expenditure for making the score. That's also the reason why Powell's work fits so well at this point. I'm glad he signed in to made this score, as much as I am excited to hear some more from this great composer. For me it truly is a work of art, flawless...but never as sublime as K-Men's masterpiece for the first installment, that one was a gift!!! At this point I should depart with the words: Sometimes the fine nuance that makes the difference "between as..." better or "not better as..." is bound to ones taste. And that is what makes us humane, isn't it?! At least the mutants of the X-Men circle will know what I mean. ;)
One of the Best Superhero Scores of All Time!.......2006-07-07
I am ecstatic about this score. Powell has done some good ones, but this is his forte, (no pun intended.) I listen to this while I'm working out, while I'm reading, while I'm playing video games, while I'm in the car... It truly is a masterpiece. I place this on the same level as the Elfman hero scores, and ABOVE Ottman's recent efforts, (Which were actually quite impressive as well.) I cannot really compare it to Batman Begins, as the genres are very different.
Buy this today! you will be amazed.
A music to think about Chris Claremont stories.......2006-07-04
Better than the film itself, this soundtrack is a good performance with several and different theme. "The last stand" theme, seems to transport you in the Chris Claremont Comics: yous are in the middle of the battle, with Cyclops shouting out "X-men, Go on !".

One of the best All-Around Rap teams Eva!.......2007-05-12
Production doesn't disappoint on this one. It's clear that this is New York emcee audio product right here. Here We Come is a great lead track. Yeah is grimy, appropriately jumped off by Tek. Sean P is as sharp as he's ever been, and Buck never slipped-he's still a leader 4 reel. The only reason why I didn't give it five stars is because I don't think every BCC soldier had to be on every song, though it worked pretty well. I swear, I'm gonna get my own little internet radio station to play real Hip-Hop like this for a couple hours a week.
Here We Come-5/5
Let's Go-3/5-Nothing new here
Yeah-4/5-threats over 90-something flavored beat
Hate All You Want- 3/5-Who can fail over that beat?!
Don't You Cross that Line-3/5-unremarkable
1,2,3-3/5-Not so exciting, but P rips it
Take A Look-3.75/5- reality rap
He Gave His Life-4/5-cold hook, passionate threats/story
Trading Places-5/5-BCC at their best
But the Game is...- 5/5- hard robbery track, irresistable beat
So Focused- 2.8/5- 2nd of two chick-targeted songs, a little limp.
Everybody-3/5-starts a little flat but picks up slightly
World Wide-5/5-tight
Soul Jah-5/5-Ride-out track

If you've enjoyed heltah skeltah, buckshot, smif n wesson, and of course OGC...can't even buy "M-pire strikez back" cause it's out of print...In any case, theses guys are good as hell...and Buckshot got it on point...
can't take this CD outta my dash...it's hot...don't think just cop it..
Lace up your boots!!!.......2006-11-21
These are the best rappers of all time! I remember being in US Army bootcamp with my OGC and Heltah Skeltah tapes hidden away from the Drill Sergeants as I listened to these guys spit some of the illest ryhmes ever. The whole military theme motivated me to continue my 6 years of service. So I'm glad they came back and dropped some real skillz in this commercial world of hip pop. Thx you Buckshot and all the BCC.
My 2 cents.......2006-11-10
This album gets 4 stars in my book. I thought it was definately worth the buy but it's not as good as I thought it would be. I rated 4 stars more because this is the kind of Hip-Hop I grew up with and love and we need to see much more of it these days. Kids growing up now will unfortunately never know and understand what true Hip-Hop is thanks to the radio and it's brainwashing. Buy this album, support the real!
BCC is back to teach the posers a lesson........2006-10-21
Sometimes you question why you follow certain groups in hip-hop; why you're dedicated to them through the thick and thin, and cop everything they release, or everything you can afford(in the case of the Wu-Tang Clan in the mid-nineties.. picking up their core 9 albums was a chore in itself, but with dozens of affiliates, it came down to picking the cream of the crop). Is it because of your undying loyalty to the group? Is it because they consistently release dope music? Is it because you've been mindwashed by a marketing strategy? Or are you simply a completist, who feels awkward owning a majority of a group's material, but missing some odd ends?
For me, in the case of the Boot Camp Clik, it's the second option. In the early nineties, you couldn't be a hip-hop head without owning Black Moon's Enta Da Stage, Smif-N-Wessun's Dah Shinin', Heltah Skeltah's Nocturnal, or O.G.C.'s Da Storm. All four of those Duckdown releases were underground staples, and some of the best albums to come out of that era of hip-hop. Unfortunately, when they dumped Da Beatminerz on their first official group album, For The People, their music really took a dive in terms of quality.
8 years after their initial falling off, and after a slew of mediocre releases later, the Boot Camp Clik returned in 2005 with a bang; perfectly represented by the extremely dope solo debut of Sean Price. While Buckshot's album with 9th Wonder and Smif-N-Wessun's releases were also essential in BCC's resurgence, Sean Price led the way in 2005, and in 2006, the group returned as a complete collective to release this fine effort here; Last Stand. Hopefully this isn't the last stand for BCC as a group, because this is most definitely their finest album as an entire 8-piece, and one of the best albums to come from the BCC as a whole.
The production on this album is strictly underground, and that's perfect for the Clik. 9th Wonder provides two standout tracks in "Take A Look(In The Mirror" and "Here We Come," while his effort on "So Focused" is also good, although not one of the better beats on the album. Pete Rock's "1-2-3" is everything you'd come to expect from Pete; just beautiful. Marco Polo's "He Gave His Life" sets a nice dramatic atmosphere, and the Large Prof's "World Wide" shows the Professor still has it; my favorite beat on the album, though, would have to be from Ken Ring and Rune Rotter on "Trading Places." It's unlike anything I've heard in awhile, and the production alone makes this my favorite track on the album.
Lyrically, the BCC is still one of the illest cliques you'll find in hip-hop. Sean Price, Buckshot, and Tek are absolutely dope on this album, while the rest of the members are dope as well, if not quite as spectacular. The chemistry that these eight men share is really unbelievable; never once do they sound awkward together, nor do they appear to be competing with eachother lyrically. They come together in perfect unity.
While it isn't a perfect release, BCC's album is definitely one of the strongest releases of the year, and a must for any true hip-hop head. Dope flows, dope beats, dope tracks; what more could you want?

Depth and Tragedy.......2005-04-15
This recording embodies everything I love about Furtwangler's artistry with great clarity. If I had to pick two words to describe it, I would choose honesty and strength. Furtwangler's interpretation of the St. Matthew Passion (a work he dearly loved ever since his childhood) is nothing if not honest. He doesn't stop at rendering the score with beauty and pathos (as, for example, Karajan does), he dwells on each and every word of the Passion story, expressing them with incredible power. Furtwangler leaves nothing to chance: it is clear that over the decades he thought deeply over even the smallest details. This is another thing I love about his artistry: he was never satisfied with just achieving moments of inspiration, he demanded from himself that every moment have integral significance within the whole. The sense of architecture here is overpowering; for example, after the chorale wenn ich einmal so scheiden (delivered with a radiance that has to be heard to be believed) comes a moment that has to stand as one of the greatest in recorded music, when the chorus says "truly, he was the Son of God". The expression achieved cannot be put into words, it has such a powerful effect.
Even if the execution and the recording were poor, this would be worth buying for Furtwangler's visionary way with the score; thankfully though, both are on the whole excellent. The only minor quibbles one could have might be the audience noise (noticeable, but not overwhelming) and some of the vocalists (I have never been a great fan of Hoffgen (she seems so wobbly to me), and sometimes the choir is a little on the hazy side). Other than these truly minor points, the only situation I could imagine a person not liking this performance is if they had certain preconceived notions about what Bach is supposed to sound like, rather than taking this on its own terms. However, I feel that the greatness of a performance should stand on its own, and not rely on anything else (for example, on historical research). I would venture to say Furtwangler's recording of the St. Matthew Passion amply meets this requirement.
Bring back the passion.......2005-03-12
Oh, my God. Literally. If you are wondering what happened to the passion of Bach's Passions, try this recording. The opening chorus, which Klemperer treats with such magisterial beauty, here will rip you to shreds. The orchestral phrasing, perhaps especially in the woodwinds, is stunning throughout and seems to want to walk right out of the CD and embrace the listener with sorrow and grace. As a bonus, the sound quality is quite a bit better than on the Maestro's other recordings.
For personal reasons..........2004-05-15
.... I give this 5 stars. If you are primarily interested in period performance Bach, this is not for you. If you are interested in modern instrument Bach with reduced forces and a strong sense of baroque style (Woldike, Richter), this is also not for you.
This is in the romantic tradition of the 19th century, and it is not a complete performance -- there are cuts -- but I think it must approach what Mendelsohn offered his audience when he performed this work, and launched a Bach revival that continues to this day. (There is, in fact, a modern recording of the version used by Mendlesohn, but I have yet to hear it.)
This is a broadly paced, reverential performance, beautifully performed. It is not in the hyper-inflated style of Beecham's MESSIAH out of Berlioz, but one does sense that Bruckner would have approved of this performance: sehr feierlich.
Purists will be offended; they usually are. If Gardiner is far to the left of Klemperer, Furtwangler is far to the right. So, be warned. Personally, I love this recording, and probably for all the wrong reasons. Evidently love is not only blind, but deaf as well.

Music you want to hear as the sun sets and you stoke a fire.......2005-10-29
That "Last Stand in Open Country," the first of a pair of CDs from the band Farm Dogs, seems to have inexplicably gone largely unnoticed is mystifying given the credentials of the band members, their skills as musicians, and the craftsmanship conveyed in these songs.
The band comprises Bernie Taupin on vocals (yes, that guy); Jim Cregan on guitars and vocals (Family, Rod Stewart to name just two of his affiliations); Robin Le Mesurier on guitars and dobro (also Rod Stewart); and Dennis Tufano on harp and vocals (remember the Buckinghams---if you do, you are telling your age!) (Tony Brock, the drummer, gets full membership standing on the next Farm Dog's CD.)
This collection of largely acoustic songs, deeply influenced by the Americana/roots movement, details the hard lives, romances, and episodic adventures of outlaws and outsiders, eccentrics, and a pair of silver screen legends, Dennis Hooper and Harry Dean. The vocal harmonies ring clear and strong, often in three or four parts, and the lyrics reveal a level of wordsmithing that's pretty atypical these days (think the antithesis of the mindless word games of rap and hip-hop). There is plenty of smooth, acoustic guitar picking and enough harmonica and to infuse some atmosphere without becoming tiresome or trite.
The songwriting credits go to the whole band, though one suspects Mr. Taupin crafted many of the lyrics. Regardless, "Last Stand in Open Country" is a gem, the kind of music you want to hear as the sun sets and you stoke a fire and keep good company with friends and dogs.

Customer Reviews:
At last, some REAL Bjorling rarities!.......2000-12-26
I often go into a record store and see a `new' recording of Jussi Bjorling material, usually on a very small and not terribly reputable label, that proclaims `The Greatest Rarities of Jussi Bjorling!', or something like that, and I grab the CD with great eagerness only to find that this is yet another transfer of the same Bjorling recordings from the late 1930s which have been put on CD hundreds of times already. No doubt the people putting out these records think that everything Jussi did before the LP era began is `rare'. While Bjorling fanatics like me may be perfectly happy to own 20 DIFFERENT versions of this great tenor singing, for example, `Che gelida manina' , we don't want 20 of the exact same recording! So I am delighted to report that this isn't yet another collection of the same old stuff, and indeed contains several songs and sacred arias he never recorded anywhere else.
This collection was put together by Cantor Don Goldberg, probably the foremost Bjorling authority in the United States - and I say `probably' only because Jussi's son Anders lives in Minnesota. In addition to presumably providing the original recordings, he has also written some excellent and perceptive notes on Bjorling's career as a recitalist and radio artist, which actually took up much more of Bjorling's time than his work on the opera stage.
Of the 21 selections on this CD, 5 have never been released in any form, an additional 9 have never been released on CD to the best of my knowledge, and all but one of the rest of the offerings are on CDs that are now out of print. This `not really rare' selection is a `Flower Song' that also appears on the Bluebell CD `Jussi Bjorling Live in Holland and Norway'. All these tracks are originally from radio broadcasts, mostly from the Bell Telephone Hour and the Voice of Firestone. The operatic selections are familiar (i.e `Nessun Dorma', and arias from Manon, Carmen, etc), although occasionally in unfamiliar form, such as a Swedish language `Salut, demeure', and the songs tend to be those `chestnuts' well liked by American radio audiences of the time, such as `A Dream' by James Caroll Bartlett, and `The Rose of Tralee'. He throws in a few Italian songs as well, such as `Funiculi Funicula' and `La Danza', although the last is sung in Swedish as well.
Of course, the singing is uniformly marvelous. Few would deny that Bjorling was, if not the greatest tenor of the twentieth century, at least in the top 5, and I, of course, would put him at number 1. Some highlights are `Nessun Dorma' sung by someone who actually understands that it's not a soccer anthem but the dreamy rapture of a man in love, a gorgeous rendition of `The Rose of Tralee' with superb feeling and legato, his marvelous English diction and facility with runs in `Clorinda', a superb `La Reve' from Manon, and, no great surprise from this master of Gounod's Romeo et Juliette and Faust, a deeply moving `O Divine Redeemer' by the same composer. There is a marvelous moment in the aforementioned `Funiculi Funicula' while the chorus is singing the words where he sings 4 notes ascending the scale of such beauty and power it makes one shiver. He also has marvelous soprano partners Grace Moore and Eleanor Steber in scenes from `Faust' and `Il Trovatore', and a very decent baritone partner, Donald Dickson, in a scene from `La Forza Del Destino', a pre-echo of the same duet recorded 12 years later with Robert Merrill.
Why, then, only 4 stars, or more accurately, 3 1/2? Either I have better sounding LP originals than Cantor Goldberg does, which I think is highly unlikely, or the remastering had some problems. Some of the selections, notably `Funiculi Funicula' and `O Divine Redeemer', simply do not sound as good as they do on my LPs. It is possible this is due to my hearing the LPs and this CD on different systems, and also I have not listened to the LPs in some time and may be remembering incorrectly. In general, I get the impression that the process used was something similar to the Ambisonic Process used by Nimbus Records - both give Bjorling a faraway sound, sometimes almost like he is underwater. One thing I think was a very bad idea was that in virtually every case applause was cut off, making the ends of songs seem very abrupt and in some cases taking away from the impact of Bjorling's final (occasionally high) notes. To be even more picky, I think I would have also preferred the French language Gounod `Sanctus' he sang on the same broadcast as `O divine redeemer', because I don't think it's a terribly good English translation and it sounds better in Latin anyway. Still, I understand that Cantor Goldberg wanted to give us the rarest items possible.
Though Jussi Bjorling impresses under almost any circumstances, I think this is a CD less for people who are comparatively new to his voice than for committed collectors, for whom this disc will be essential. And of course, I hope for Volume II and III and IV, or even more, even if they might need to change engineers. There's still quite a few more Bjorling rarities out there...

Singing with presence.......2007-06-18
The piano part is not without bad moments, the recording is quite bright, but yet there is not a unpleasant hard edge in singers voice one might imagine. Instead there is a lot of presence and maturity of great artist that made me stop and listen wonderful interpretation of familiar songs. If artists like Seefried and Jurinac are your favorites, I bet you'll appreciate Grümmer as well - try Abendempfindung to start. Quality/price ratio is exceptional.
Disappointed by first listening.......2003-08-04
After reading the rapturous reviews of this 2 CD album, I purchased it last week. There is a lot of music for the price, and the recording quality it good considering the age of the recordings. But I found myself less than enthusiastic about Elisabeth Grümmer's singing. I was particularly interested in the Schubert lieder. What I value most in lieder singing is naturalness and a certain pleasingness to the ear - lieder is after all song, not opera. Grümmer's voice seems to me more suited to the latter. I can think of a dozen or two contemporary lieder singers who I would much prefer over Grummer. Of the rest of the music on the album, I can't venture to say anything as I have only begun to explore this CD. But for Schubert lieder, stick with Fischer-Dieskau, Brigitte Fassbaender, Ian Bostridge, Sarah Walker,Richard Jackson, Janet Baker, Felicity Lott, Barbara Bonney,Elly Ameling, Stephen Varcoe (a remarkable voice - his version of Am Bach im Fruhling and Auf der Donau, cannot be beaten), Matthias Gorne, Cheryl Studer (her versions of I'm Fruhling, Der FluB, and Am See are wonderful) and innumerable others - in no particular order. While I'm at it, I have also listened to Bryn Turfel's recent recording of Schubert lieder. It has been highly reviewed in many quarters, but none of his performances would be my first choice.
An Answer To a Prayer........2001-01-05
It's amazing what treasures one can discover when browsing around Amazon.com! Discovering this 2 CD set, and quickly receiving it in the post soon after seemed like the answer to a prayer.
Here's more than two hours of lieder recital items compiled from broadcasts dating from 1948 to 1970. No allowances need be made for changes of acoustic or recording quality. One can listen entranced and undisturbed until, after the last track, applause breaks out after the last of Richard Strauss' "Four Last Songs".
If there is a welcome disturbance, it is the appearance of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and a chorus, joining the singer in a Schubert setting of a song from Goethe's "Faust". In his autobiography, Fischer-Dieskau provides a wondrous appreciation of Elisabeth Grümmer, allocating more space to it than to comments about all his other colleagues put together.
I shall not attempt anything similar, adding only that a reminder of the extremely low price should be enough to urge all lovers of German lieder to add this to the trolley.
Beauty Pure!.......1999-09-04
Grümmer's voice was probably the sweetest voice ever recorded.
She bares her soul in each and every recording and makes you gasp at the sheer beauty and urgency of what she sings; She simply bares her soul. This 2-CD together with her recording of Humperdinck's "Hänsel & Gretel" recently re-issued under EMI's "Great Recordings of the Century" MUST move you to tears!
I am really at a loss for words here - just get it, sit back and listen to the greatest voice of the century!!!!
One of the great singers of the 20th century.......1999-04-20
This is a fantastic recording at an unbelieveable price. Two live recordings of concerts given by this great spinto soprano who was never truly appreciated by the music-buying public. The voice retained its freshness until she retired, and this collection of lieder makes one weep at the sheer beauty of her voice. A great bargain!!!

Opera in English.......2007-03-19
Barry Banks is certainly a contender for one of the best tenors around. THis is a great example of coloratura and legato line which is very well executed in a rather booming tenor voice. I just saw Mr. Banks in "The Elixer of Love" and he was stupendous. This is a large tenor voce in the theatre which alas is difficult to capture in a studio recording...you have to take my word. THe translations are often odd as they generally are, but this recording is certainly worth having. (although I prefer in the original language)
4 1/2Stars...exciting voice and singing.......2004-12-02
Mr. Banks has a "heroic lyric tenor" if there is such a category. His fast vibrato and power lend the voice excitement and attention getting presence. I was intrigued by him in his stunning appearance in the Rimsky-Korsakov "Le'Coq d'Or" DVD (a not-to-be-missed experience)-- he was a stand-out there there and I went looking for other things by him. This CD is treasurable in many ways. The repertoire is interesting and the duets add flavor to the whole. The only small complaint I have is that perhaps Mr. Banks lacks just the last bit of emotional connection in his singing. You won't go wrong getting this excellent CD.
