5 out of 5 stars Carnival of the Animals.......2007-01-10

The music is beautiful. I used it for a music lesson for Kindergarten on how to interpret animals using music. It is also very soothing in the background for working.

3 out of 5 stars Carnival..........2005-07-26

I found this disk to be "adequate." Other than The Swan, nothing really moved me. The swan rates five stars, the rest, four! You might like it more than I did...

5 out of 5 stars This is a Carnival of Fun.......2005-06-29

I had been a fan of this recording when it was first released. While looking for the recording for my daughter, I fell upon this release.
Sensational! Who can't love the Romantics?

5 out of 5 stars Musical Playfulness at it's finest.......2005-02-20

This CD is absolutely charming. The Carnival of the Animals is so full of different expressions- the majestic lion, the agonizingly slow tortoise, the free-flying birds, the dancing fossils, and the regal swan. Phaeton is amazing, as is le Rouet d'Omphale and the Danse Macabre. I wasn't into Saint-Saens before this CD, but now I'm hooked. For model romantic era music, buy this CD without delay :)

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2002-01-31

It's humourous, it's simple, it's great. Those three words best describe Carnvial of Animals. From the lovely and beautiful Aquarium and Aviary to the more serious, respectable March of the Royal Lion, this musical composistion goes everywhere and does everything in great strides. A must-have for any classical music fan

2 out of 5 stars Save your money and get the Levine / Preston recording.......2004-02-23

This is truly the worst recordings I've ever heard of the Saint-Saens 3rd symphony. It sounds like the orchestra and organ parts were recorded during different studio sessions and matched in post processing. The organ part was clearly recorded on a instrument of German influence and is all wrong for this French Romantic era symphony. Also its obvious that the organ part was boosted during post processing because there's no way that the registrations the organist is using in the recording would carry over a full orchestra in real life.

The Carnival of the animals is ok. Although at times the piano drowns out the other insturments. Again, bad post-processing.

I wonder how the people who produced this recording are able to sleep at night.

5 out of 5 stars A Sleeping Tiger Awakens!.......2003-12-10

This is a a truly remarkable recording of the Saint-Saens 3rd. It has been described that the organ's first appearance in this symphony, is of a quiet, behind the scenes, gently supportive, cat-napping tiger. Only after the increasingly rousing 2nd half, does the tiger fully awaken with a pounce that lands it directly front and center, and snarling! The tiger now leaps, blazing forth in great prominence, headlong into the finale. Man, that is one THUNDEROUS C major chord that opens the Maestoso-Allegro! You better be holding on to your hat! Really, though, I have heard maybe one other recording that tops this for having every bit just perfect--and that was Charles Munch in Boston, recorded in 1959. But Dutoit and Hurford should snag all the praise they can get for this sonically resplendent recording. Saint-Saens did some of his absolute best orchestral writing in this 3rd (his last) symphony. You will be moved by the quiet, poetic strings and soft, sustained organ pedal notes in the first half. You will be launched, with gooseflesh, right out of your chair during the finale, and you will be in love with this Gallic beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Grandeur.......2001-04-13

Saint-Saens' Symphony #3, especially the first four movements (op. 78), truly resounds the grandeur of France. The fourth piece, Sym No.3 in c, 'Organ' Op.78: Maestoso-Allegro, was played during London's grandest World's Exposition in 1900, complete with cathedral pipe organ and full grand paino. This was written at a time when Europe had not yet lost its wondrous magic to existentialism and the industrial machine. Its a beautiful composition that holds in it the glory and genius of the Fin de Siecle spirit. This recording on the London label is the best I've yet to hear, and its tenor recalls the age of giants- of Hugo, Napoleon, and Europe's great flowering World's Expostitions. So refreshing to hear in our troubling modern time. Ecoutez soigneusement, pour c'est le grandeur!

5 out of 5 stars An essential interpretation for lovers of this symphony . ........1999-08-09

On the whole, Dutoit's is a more satisfying performance than Levine's-- In Dutoit's hands, the slow movement, especially, is overpowering, like a gentle, cool wave of fresh water washing over the body, only this music reels in the spirit as well. Levine's charged approach in the outer movements works well-- the Berlin gets to unleash their brass to full effect-- but the slow movement lacks the magic present in the Dutoit. Dutoit's is a very French performance-- sparkling, smooth as silk, Romantic . . . And what attention to detail--what a glorious acoustic! I reveled in the cymbal crashes and piano flourishes, captured here with great clarity. The "Carnival of the Animals" is played with great charm, but there are better accounts, especially the Previn/ Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (Philips).

3 out of 5 stars Good, not great..........2007-01-03

It is a cut and paste job, and the overall result reflects that. Some of the pieces are rather good. Some are works that are not choral works, and do not lend themselves well to being morphed into a choral piece.

If you are looking for a musical experience, then pass on this one. If you are looking for pleasant music in the background that no one really listens too...then you may want to consider.

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Moved to tears.......2004-03-18

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

5 out of 5 stars Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

5 out of 5 stars Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02

This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

4 out of 5 stars Enchanting folk songs (taken a few at a time).......2006-06-24

Britten made numerous folksong arrangements over the years--the reviewer below summarizes them very well. Here are 52 for tenor voice accompanied by paino, harp, or guitar--there's also a Vol. 2 in addition to this double CD. Only a few items, like The Minstrel Boy and Greensleeves, are likely to sound familiar to American listeners unless they already know Britten's arrangements. He adds subversive harmonies that can be dissonant and distrubing; at other times the arrangements are a bit twee. Philip Langridge has a more mellifluous tone than Peter Pears, for whom almost all the songs were set. This makes the recital easy listening, but the simple tunes quickly become too much of a good thing--it's better to listen to a handful at a time.

Persoally, I like the Irish and Scottish folksongs the best, because of their haunting modal harmonies, and the harpist Ossian Ellis is a marvelous accompanist for several of them, but there's lots to choose form here. The chief drawbacks are two: Langridge was a bit too old by 1995 to keep an unpleasant wobble out of his tone at loud volume, not to mention that he is peculiarly humorless in the comic songs. Second, Graham Johnson is an unimginative accompanist without rhythmic vigor, which compares unfavorably to Britten's own classic recordings, in both mono and stereo, with Pears. Yet for all that, there are many lovely songs here, and they are now available, transferred from the Collins Classics label to Naxos at bargain price.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For All Britten Admirers.......2005-04-09

Many lovers of Benjamin Britten's music have no idea that he made extraordinary arrangements of many folksongs. And although this 2CD set is part of Naxos's 'English Song Series' and although it mainly contains songs from the Britain (and Ireland), Britten also set French and American folksongs and they are included here as this issue comprises all his voice-and-piano folksong settings. (He also made voice-and-orchestra versions of some of the songs here but they are not included.) His interest in poetry was intense, and as a friend has commented, 'Britten's knowledge of the obscure corners of English poetry would have put many a professor of English to shame.' His interest in making these settings lasted his entire composing life. Over the years he made six numbered collections: Vols 1, 3, 5 & 6 are primarily British (and some American) folksongs; Vol. 2 French; Vol. 4 Moore's Irish Songs. Also included here are several scattered single songs and songs published posthumously for a total of 52 songs in all. They are parceled out between two of the greatest English singers of the day: soprano Dame Felicity Lott and tenor Philip Langridge. They are mostly accompanied by the best English accompanist since Gerald Moore, pianist Graham Johnson. (One group are accompanied by guitarist Carlos Bonell, and a couple feature cellist Christopher van Kampen.)

The piano accompaniments are generally rather spare, tending not to call attention to themselves, but on closer listening one realizes that Britten has used his own easily identifiable harmonic and structural sense (not surprisingly, one of Britten's favorite devices, the canon, occurs repeatedly), always in pursuit of bringing out the literal meaning and, even more so, the psychology of the song at hand. For instance, he mimics the harp in 'Dear Harp of our Country' and 'The Last Rose of Summer' and the spinning of the mill-wheel in 'The Miller of Dee' or of the spinning wheel in 'Fileuse.' There is the yearning upward interval used to accompany the girl's name in 'Sally in Our Alley.' There is the sad tolling of the bell in 'At the mid hour of the night,' the indecisive alternating chords in 'O Waly, Waly.' Many of these songs are familiar, but many are obscure, at least to this writer. Each is so aptly set that one discovers new things on each listening. Some old favorites, like 'Sail On, Sail On' and 'The Ash Grove' are given fresh colorings. I was amused to realize that that silly Monty Python send-up, 'The Lumberjack Song,' uses (approximately) the tune of 'The Foggy, Foggy Dew' (set here to a melody different than the one I know from my youth).

The performances, not surprisingly, are about as good as they get. I cannot forget the sound of Janet Baker's voice in 'O Waly, Waly,' but this is no criticism of Lott's version, which is also touchingly effective. Langridge, whose diction is a marvel, is similarly effective in such favorites as 'The Plough Boy,' 'The Foggy, Foggy Dew,' and 'The Minstrel Boy.' Is there a more sensitive accompanist than Graham Johnson? I don't think so. I will admit that am not fond of the guitar (clearly my own idiosyncratic taste) but Carlos Bonell is effective in his accompaniment of Vol. 6, which includes 'I will give my love an apple' and 'Bonny at Morn' among others. At the end of CD2 is a song with cello obbligato played by Christopher van Kampen, and an unknown folksong that, in the absence of text, is given to the cello. The texts, too, are worth studying for their folk-wisdom. I was particularly struck by this line from 'Pray Goody': "Remember when the judgement's weak, the prejudice is strong." ('Pray Goody' also has an especially effective piano accompaniment that requires virtuosic control by the pianist.)

Anyone interested in the music of Britten really ought to own this set. It is an aspect of his art that should not be missed.

This is a very generous collection of the chamber works of Arnold Bax (1883-1953), one of the 20th century favorites of Anglophile music lovers. If you like Bax's late-impressionist style, it's a very attractive collection indeed. The performances are all extremely well played, and the musicians sound as though they had been playing these pieces for years instead of having learned them for a recording session. Hyperion's recording is typically vivid as well. In sum, presuming the music appeals, this is a flawless disc. --Leslie Gerber

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the gentle side of Arnold Bax.......2007-01-16

The lyrical intimacy of these chamber works of Arnold Bax are quite a contrast from his massive symphonies & tone poems. In fact, if I'd listened to this disc in a blindfold test I'm not sure I would have guessed who the composer was. Despite the fact that most of the music has an elegiac quality to it - from the haunting opening of the Nonet, to the Harp Quintet - the writing & instrumentation results in a disc of refreshing variety & inspiration. In short, there is plenty of substance to these pieces; & while things never get too relaxed, the overall atmosphere is one of peace & contentment. The programming is exceptional as the compositions work very well together; their order of placement was also well thought out as each flows very well with the next.

The Nash Ensemble is a first rate group that has made many recordings & Hyperion has provided excellent sound. It's hard to believe that this is the first Amazon review of this exceptional release, which Grammophone's reviewer considered nominating for a "Critic's Choice" award in 1995. I put this at the top of my English chamber music cd's.
