Customer Reviews:
Great Sounds.......2007-07-18
If you like soft sounds from the 60's and 70's, this is THE album for you. Memories flooded over me in wondrous waves when I listened to this CD.
Bert's best.......2007-04-10
CD is very soothing. I listen to it when I need a calming influence. Wonderland By Night is awesome.
I'm A Kid Again.......2007-02-23
Like everyone else, I know Bert Kaempfert's music from watching Sandy Becker. I smile every time I hear it. I'm sorry that "Echo In The Night" is not on this CD, though. It was one of my favorite songs to listen to on the radio when I was a kid. It's amazing how the music stays with you after all these years.
The Very Best of Bert Kaempfert.......2007-01-12
I am old enough to remember the Sandy Becker Show, the Match Game and several other shows that used Mr. Kaempfert's music as a theme or sound logo. The music on this CD is carefully re-mastered and sounds as fresh as it did in 1966.
If you remember my above references, too, then pay extra attention to Afrikaan Beat, That Happy Feeling and A Swingin' Safari.
Great Artist, Great Music.......2006-11-03
This cd really exemplifies the composing and conducting talents of Bert Kaempfert. This album is cheerful with a wonderful blend of winds and strings....simply the BEST!!!

Customer Reviews:
Irish balladeer better remembered as TV host.......2004-09-27
Everybody who was around in the sixties, seventies and eighties in the UK remembers who Val Doonican was - he was a regular on TV, usually hosting his own show in which he would always sing at least one song, often sitting in a rocking chair. But before he established himself as a TV host, he was a singer with a string of UK hits - three top three hits, two other top ten hits, three that came close to the top ten and six minor hits. Ballads were his stock-in-trade but he was not limited to them as he sometimes recorded up-tempo or mid-tempo songs. In the main, he recorded easy listening pop music or covers of soul, country and folk songs adapted to an easy listening pop style but he also recorded some Irish songs too. This compilation, the most comprehensive yet released on CD, covers all aspects of his music.
His five big hits were Walk tall (one of his more upbeat songs), The special years, Elusive butterfly (a cover of the Bob Lind classic - both Val and Bob peaked at number five in the UK charts), What would I be (his biggest hit) and If the whole world stopped loving. The three hits that didn't quite make the UK top ten were Memories are made of this (a cover of Dean Martin's fifties classic), If I knew then what I know now and Morning. All these hits, together with the minor hits, can be found on this collection.
This collection largely avoids his recordings of Irish songs although there are some, notably Delaney's donkey. If you are keen on this aspect of his career, it is possible to find his Irish songs elsewhere. The majority of the tracks here are covers, some of which are of songs that are very familiar and others less so. Among these, my favorite is Me and the elephant, a song that never charted in Britain for anybody but which was played a lot on some radio stations.
This is a great collection of Val's music. If you enjoy the music of Andy Williams, Dean Martin and Perry Como, give Val a listen. You will probably enjoy what you hear.
A voice that heals.......2001-07-23
Val Doonican is not that well known in America but deserves to be. He is rather like an Irish Perry Como with the same soothing relaxing balm of a voice. I first heard of him when living in England and his RING OF BRIGHT WATER still thrills me. Get this CD and listen to it -- you will not regret it believe me friends.

More of John Miles. Please help me........2003-08-16
I agree with the other gentleman. John Miles is hard to find.
One of the best rock singles I have ever heard is with John Miles.
It's called "Hollywood Queen" and not available anywhere or in any form.
I lost the vinyl single 30 years ago.
what can I do??????????
Please help me. You cant expect us Icelander only to produce rock music; you must supply us with raw material too.

Wanted: More John Miles........2001-05-16
For those that don't have turntables anymore, this is about the only thing by John Miles you can get on CD. This and his first album "Rebel". Will the powers that be ever re-release his best albums "Zaragon" and "More Miles Per Hour"? Meanwhile, my 20 year old tape of these two albums just broke. I need to find someone with an operational turntable who can re-record my vinyl copies for me.

HIGH PRAISE FOR THE FATHER OF BLUEGRASS.......2005-08-26
THIS C.D. IS A GREAT COLLECTION OF THE FATHER OF BLUEGRASS'S WORK. HIS STYLE WILL NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE.
Be Adventerous!.......2004-01-04
Bill Monroe of Rosine, Kentucky (pop. 200) had just 9 charted Billboard hits from 1946-1959. There is vastly more to his career than that statistic. It certainly lasted longer! He is the designated Father of Bluegrass music and if anyone is a legend in his time, it is he. "The Very Best of Bill Monroe" is a sharply produced CD with excellent, almost piercing sound. The harmony and diction by Monroe and his backups are tops. Do we remember that line from "The One On the Left"? A very informative insert accompanies the CD. (Serious country fans should ALWAYS read those inserts). We learn for example that Monroe was a stern taskmaster, who encouraged "turnover" in his bands and made them dress in suits for concerts! Just like Willie Nelson! Of the 21 tracks, only the overplayed "Mule Skinner Blues" and "Gotta Travel On" disappoint. This CD is virtually educational. The time span here covers 34 years-from "Kentucky Waltz (1946) to the haunting instrumental "My Last Days on Earth". Bill wrote that one lying in a hospital bed in 1980-afraid he was dying of colon cancer. This reviewer would urge serious country listeners to be adventurous by trying a Monroe album , expanding their musical horizons and rounding out their collections. Sometimes that advice appears trite but not in this case.
An outstanding introduction to the father of Bluegrass Music.......2003-07-13
This is a generously programmed, slam-bang collection of the best songs recorded by Bill Monroe and his band (in its various early incarnations) on the Decca/MCA label. With 22-tracks total, this is perhaps the ideal album to pick up if you only want to get a single disc of Monroe's work... and it's all really great stuff. Kudos to MCA/Universal for doing such a good job on this well-made, thoughtful reissue!
Word to the wise: Although this best-of is really good, keep in mind that all the songs on here are *also* included on the equally fab 50 track, 2-CD "Anthology" collection, which cam out a year later, in 2003. Either way you go, though, this stuff is the very definition of "high lonesome," super-authentic bluegrass music. Highly recommended!!

The best? I think not........2004-01-11
This disc includes some songs that, while I like them, are not what people might consider the "best" of G&S. Of course, anything by G&S is good, it's still not the "best of the best."
There has got to be something that better represents the G&S canon.
can't understand the words.......2004-01-08
Don't know about those other reviewers, but I just can't make out very much of the lyrics. Maybe those folk have better CD players or better hearing, but it's pretty much a blur to me. I strongly recommend "The Ultimate Gilbert and Sullivan" instead.

Album Description
A Cincinnati vocal group, Otis Williams & the Charms landed a #1 R&B hit for almost ten weeks in 1954 (also hitting #15 on the Pop charts) with "Hearts of Stone," a song which has become a "standard" of the Doo Wop genre. Otis Williams continued to record for King until 1963, after which he recorded country tunes as Otis Williams & The Midnight Cowboys until the late 1960s.
Album Description
One of the best known classic Doo Wop songs of all-time 'Hearts Of Stone' was recorded by Cincinnati vocal group, Otis Williams & The Charms in 1954. The group was a mainstay on the R&B charts in the 1950s. Otis Williams continues to perform and as a deserving true pioneer of R&B, was inducted into the United Group In Harmony Hall Of Fame in 2000. 'Ling, Ting, Tong', 'Two Hearts' and 'Ivory Tower', included in this collection, were all top ten hits for Otis Williams & The Charms. 25 tracks. Collectables 2003.
Customer Reviews:
Finally A Charming Collection.......2004-01-28
Collectables Records rather dramatic recent improvement over past years when it was the low-rent district of re-issue labels still has a ways to go (is it really necessary to have their website prominently placed four times in this package, including on the disc itself???), but they've finally gotten their act together as far as remastering, hiring the great Little Walter DeVenne, increasing the amount of songs per disc and upgrading their packaging to respectable levels. They still don't include a discography, recording and release dates, or sidemen which is vital to this era of music, and while the two pages of liner notes by Victor Pearlin attempt to fill in the blanks, an extra page with the necessary recording info would've been easy to compile and include - hence the one star deduction.
That said, this is the first Charms collection that legitimately qualifies as a Greatest Hits disc and for that fans have to be grateful. You get a full twenty-five songs, from their somewhat ragged beginnings in '53, when the group is woefully out of tune behind then-16 year old lead Otis Williams (who even then sounds fully confident) to the dawn of the next decade, a period in which vocal groups reigned thanks in part to their contributions including the massive 1954 hit "Hearts Of Stone" which made them stars.
Because Otis Williams was always the focale point of the act, the Charms actually went through many incarnations through years, most of which are addressed here in chronological order. Only two latter year minor hits from the early 60's aren't included, which is strange considering they too were cut for King Records (the rest these came out on DeLuxe, a King subsidiary). But otherwise this disc is the most in-depth look into the career of the Charms and has a great cross-section of material that was their trademark, as they hit with everything from the pop balladry of "Ivory Tower" to the uptempo "Two Hearts" in mid-decade when white America was turned on to these sounds.
The Charms were unique among R&B vocal groups however in that while they found themselves frequently covered by white pop acts, as was the practice of the day and looked back upon with disdain today for "stealing" the thunder of the black originals, the Charms actually were often found covering other artists themselves. Their biggest hit came from the Jewels (a looser, rougher, but more atmospheric version), and the Charms smoother, polished style plus greater distribution made it, not the original, the crossover hit. They also snatched half the action on the Five Keys novelty "Ling Ting Tong", swiped "Bazoom" from Leiber & Stoller's studio group The Cheers, and even cut a version of Patsy Cline's country hit "Walkin' After Midnight", doing uniformly good jobs on all of them, but perhaps detracting from their legacy amongst R&B purists.
By the end of the disc they show that while they might not have been the most groundbreaking group they were always very capable and had many equally stellar originals that went unheard by most. The great "Don't Wake Up The Kids" shows them goofing on an adult party like junior league Coasters, while "My Prayer Tonight" is a startlingly good sophisticated ballad that still has firm roots in R&B. Overall this collection is quite thorough and consistantly entertaining with some nice lost gems amongst the hits - the group singing on "Blues Stay Away From Me" is a thrilling highlight to discover for example. Far more than just a group that attained lasting notice from one huge smash and nothing more, this is irrefutable proof the Charms were rock solid for a long stretch of time when the sounds of rhythm and blues vocal harmony was dominant.
Considering how long it took for someone to put out a comprehensive Charms CD, and considering it comes from a company with a history of doing a shaky job on these things, this is uniformly classly and (pardon the pun) a charming surprise.

The man who brought rock'n'roll to the world.......2005-07-30
People will forever argue about when rock'n'roll really began and of course there is no clear answer to that question. What is not in dispute is that Bill Haley and the Comets had the first major international hit with a rock'n'roll record - the simple but immortal Rock around the clock. It wasn't actually his first big hit but its success in 1955 is generally regarded as officially marking the start of the rock'n'roll era.
Bill Haley's roots were in country music and he began his career as a country singer - however, he experimented in various ways, taking ideas from R+B music to make his music a little different. By the time he secured a recording contract, his style had evolved into what we now know as rock'n'roll. Bill was hugely popular for a brief period in 1955 and 1956, but as Elvis took over as the leading star of rock'n'roll, record buyers quickly lost interest in Bill's music.
Rock around the clock was the first record that Bill recorded but made little impact when first released. The follow-up, Shake rattle and roll, did much better (a top five UK hit in 1954). Subsequently, Rock around the clock was featured in the soundtrack of Blackboard jungle and was re-issued, this time becoming a number one hit in Britain and America. Bill had further international hits with Rock-a-beating boogie, See you later alligator, The saints rock'n'roll, Rocking through the rye, Rip it up and Don't knock the rock, though these records were generally more popular in Britain (where there was no obvious competitor) than in America (where there were plenty of other rock'n'roll acts emerging).
This compilation includes all of Bill's classic hits and the best of his other recordings.

Beautiful Victor Herbert.......1999-05-19
This recording (Arabesque Z6561) is one of three CD recordings of Victor Herbert's music by Don Hunsberger and the Eastman School of music produced in the early 1980's. (The others are Arabesque Z6529 and Z6547) All are superbly recorded using the original orchestra arrangements from a composer who was gifted in the art of orchestration. We get a sampling of marches, selections from operettas, humor songs, and a selection from his opera Natoma. Teresa Ringholt sings with the orchestra on a few songs and her sweet soprano voice is perfect for the part. We need more of Victor Herbert's beautiful music to be discovered and performed in the way Herbert intended it to be performed. The authenic Victor Herbert may be the next discovery in the same way the authenic Scott Joplin has been discovered by the public.
