    Album Description

Amon Düül II's 6th album Vive La Trance was originally released in 1973. The group experimented with world music rhythms on compositions such as Mozambique, risked unusual piano dissonances on Jalousie, proved their distinct feel for haunting rock songs on Trap, Dr. Jeckyll and Pig Man and allowing tracks such as Fly United to gleam with thoroughly strange organ sounds.

The result even pleased German press, who otherwise tended to treat comparable acts from other parts of Germany with a certain skepticism and arrogance. Germany's most critical music publication, Sounds, mused on the release of Vive La Trance: "The grating, grasping electronics have become even denser, more variable and dominant since Wolf City, lending Düül's sound a somewhat lighter, hovering element as an antithesis to the complicated, drum-driven rhythms." Beyond that, the musicians experimented - in the journalists opinion - with `bubbling, airy-spooky sounds that I'd love to fill my bathtub with.'

The songs on this recording tend to be shorter (averaging around 3 1/2 minutes), and more conventional in structure and subject matter, but there is an overlay of electronics and psychedelic effects that definitely keeps the music within the progressive realm.

Amon Düül II, the second formation of this now legendary band, are one of the earliest and best known of the German experimental (Krautrock) bands. For the complete re-issue series of the Amon Düül II catalogue, the CDs will be released as remastered deluxe editions, with enhanced booklets, featuring new liner notes and photos.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2005-08-06

This album would have to be on my top 5 'desert island discs' collection.
Kraut rock (which this album represents most honourably)wasn't influenced by jazz and blues traditions in the way that American and British bands were. And that makes Amon Duul all the more exciting in that their music springs from the Teutonic/Gothic subconscious. Mix in a healthy dose of hallucigens, and Bob's your uncle! There's something for the whole family here. Each track is a gem. Ach so!

everybody always prattles on about yeti, wolf city, tanz der lemminge etc ad nauseum---and so do I. This one however----leaves me gasping at the sheer pop majesty!!! But this is not doing this record justice!!!! What can one say except that Vive la Trance is universal. It covers everything---and it is hilarious to boot!!! Beautiful

5 out of 5 stars Love them all !.......2003-03-26

'Vive la trance' was a slight dissapointment for me the first time I played it, because it was immediately after I got totaly hooked on 'Wolf City', for me the One and only. But it was back in '74, I was 17 and very rebelious and not into compromising. Few years later, in the age of Punk movement, I realised how 'Trance' was way ahead of its time and I got back to it With more enthusiasm. I'm talking about a row of firecrackers,
5 crazy short songs at the end of the record. Today, after decades of being into music I still find 'Amon Duul II' incredibly fresh, inovative and
magical. I love them all and have all their records, but for new enthusiasts I'd like to make list of the best 'Duul' records (my opinion of
course):-Wolf City, Yeti, Tanz der Lemminge, Vive la trance, Hi-jack,
Carnival in Babylon,Made in Germany, Nada moonshine, Only human.
That's it. And they cover any niche in contemporary rock, from experimental to pop, and you don't need much more if you have this ultimate collection. And most important, 'Duul' is a group of people with
a lot of sense of humour. Zappa, hope you have fun wherever you are!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-09-07

This was my first Amon Duul album years ago. Excellent.

3 out of 5 stars Solid Kraut - very 'full' album.......2000-07-21

Good quality German Prog. Rises above most of the releases of its time. Amon Duul were around the best of the genre. Rockin, pshychadelic, lots of diversity between the tracks. This can be listened to for a long time. Demonstrates theior skill and versatiliy. Way ahead of its time. A little poppy for Amon Duul and in comparison with other krautrock, but dont let that scare you.

Sounds german. Fun. The leadin tracks are perhaps the best.Actually, as I run through side A, it is very good.

3.5 stars. But when comparing to german prog, perhaps its a 4.

4 out of 5 stars German psych-masters visit Planet Earth for a bit.......1999-10-13

Less lysergic but most lovely album, with Renate Knaup's vocals making their presence known, and the band working to make a slightly more "accessible" and "commercial" sound. Of course it was neither, but as a result the compositions are more organized and only hover a bit above the ground, as opposed to previous albums where they were bound for distant reaches of the universe. A good introduction to Amon Duul II, and a nice in-between stop for Duulians who have already taken the big mystical interstellar journeys, i.e. "Yeti," "Phallus Dei," and "Tanz Der Lemminge" with them.

5 out of 5 stars Phoenix rising out of the ash..............1999-09-01

After YETI and DANCE OF THE LEMMINGS, two out-of-body albums that contain some of the wildest music ever made, Amon Duul II took a slight breather with this album. More structured than it's two predecessors, it plays kind of like a slightly wilder Jefferson Airplane circa AFTER BATHING AT BAXTERS. Renate Knaup and Chris Karrer's heavily-accented English gives everything a odd cast, but songs like "Tables Are Turned" and "All The Years Round" are charming and pretty. "Hawknose Harliquin" is the only one that goes back deep into freak-out land, with a heavy nod to early Floyd and Dead. If you want to give these German psychedelic warlords a try, get this first, then try YETI or LEMMINGS----and wave that freak flag!

5 out of 5 stars Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite.......2006-12-14

Back in my college days I was a huge Pink Floyd fan. I couldn't get enough of "Dark Side of the Moon," "Wish You Were Here," "Meddle" and "Piper At The Gates of Dawn."

Later, a friend with an exhaustive knowledge of music turned me on to this album. It instantly became one of my favorites.

Amon Duul II's "Vive La Trance" is a multitextured, psychedelic gem that condenses the lush production of '70s prog rock with the wild experimentation of '60s psychedelia. The tracks (for the most part) range from 3 1/2 to 4 minutes. Amon Duul II had the good sense to avoid self-indulgent 20-minute jams, packing this release with 11 top-notch songs.

In any form, this album makes a worthy addition to the serious music fan's collection. If you can score the Repertoire Records re-issue from 2002, you'll experience the best sound quality and get a bonus track - "Mozambique" (single version).
