Product Description

After The James Gang and before Rocky Mountain Way, Joe Walsh moved to Colorado and formed a short-lived group called Barnstorm with bassist Kenny Passarelli and drummer Joe Vitale. The result is this remarkable and intriguing 1972 album most often referred to as Walshs debut solo effort. What it truly is, though, is a richly textured acoustic/electric album that ebbs and flows with sounds and segues ranging from spooky to sweet, plaintive to psychedelic, from melodically enticing to ballbusting organ-guitar crunch rock. Its less than 40 minutes in length, but by its end the listener feels like he/she has been taken on a musical adventure of the best kind. The album didnt produce any hits per se, but charted in the Top 100, gave the world the first version of Turn To Stone, and resulted in a uniquely barnstorming national tour, wherein Joe Walsh reconfirmed if there ever was any doubt - his stature as a premiere musician. Joe Walsh next hit with Rocky Mountain Way and in 1975 added his unique energy to The Eagles, but this landmark early album is as good as anything the rocker did before or since. 1. Here We Go 2. 1 out of 5 stars "Creative" editing ruins this CD.......2006-05-16

This is one of my favorite records, and I've been trying for years to get it on CD. I have the original vinyl, but those Dunhill pressings were never much good. So, I was very happy to see that the record was reissued on CD. Unfortunately, there's some tape hiss, but most distressing, track 3, "One and One" has been edited to fade out with a long pause between it and the next tune "Giant Bohemoth". On the original vinyl, these two tunes seque into each with no fadeout of any kind. The edit on the reissue totally disrupts the "flow" of the album. Very, very disappointing.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE******************
Apparently this reissue was initially released using a set of incorrectly marked master tapes. The reissuing company has now found the correct masters, have cut a new digital remaster and is now circulating the corrected issue of this record.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrible sound quality!.......2006-04-15

I'm not sure which edition Wayne Klein is referring to in his review but it certainly wasn't this one. As noted by another reviewer, Hip-O Select completely dropped the ball on this one, using the wrong master tapes to produce this CD. It is LOADED with tape hiss, so much so that I could not get through the entire disc before turning it off. I have been in touch with Hip-O's parent company (Universal) and they acknowledged the mistake, saying that a vastly improved edition with the correct master tapes will soon be in stores, but after nearly a year it has yet to appear and when it does the consumer may not be able to distinguish between the two editions. It's hard to understand a mistake like this not being caught before production. But it's worse that a company would allow unsuspecting consumers to buy this garbage and then not rectify the matter after all this time. Great music, bad business practice. I'm keeping my vinyl!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Walsh album finally available on CD again.......2006-03-13

Atmospheric and fascinating Joe Walsh's Barnstorm (aptly named)brought forth this terrific album after Walsh left the James Gang. Everything from the inspired opener "Here We Go" to the unusual "Birdcall Morning". From the instrumental "Giant Bohemoth" which slides right into the stunning "Mother Says" the album doesn't miss a beat.

The biggest song here "Turn to Stone" would show up again in a slightly inferior version on "So What?" but the original primordial monster is here. Featuring crunchy a guitar lick and a stunning guitar solo Walsh never got this experimental again. The album closes out with the acoustic guitar/haronica driven "Comin' Down" which provides a tranquil close to a magical album.

Like the 2005 Japanese re-release the magical sound qualty of the original recording has been retained. This is, in fact, the best the album has ever sounded (although honestly I can't compare it to the original Mobile Fidelity release since I never had it but have had the other import versions). Walsh never got better as a songwriter than here (although he came close with another couple of strong albums such as "The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get"). A marvelous reissue, this classic album only lacks bonus tracks and outtakes which would have made this classy package complete.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2005-12-23

What a great line-up of singers on this disc! Although Campions' songs are written as solo songs he stated at the time that they may also be enjoyed as part songs. On this CD they are tastefully mixed both vocally and instrumentally. There are trios with soprano, tenor, baritone and lute where the lute is treated almost like another voice part. Each of the singers has a solo or two and Chance has several. It is also good to keep in mind that Thomas Campion (l567-l620) was a poet as well as a musician who had the capability of putting together the two art forms, words and music. As he says, "lovingly coupled together." From over 100 songs it was difficult to select only 25, but Campion helped us by placing his prize songs often at the beginning of a volume. And it is certainly appropriate to present these chosen songs with varied vocal combinations. My favorites are the last three on the album: "The Sypres curten of the night is spread" (Michael Chance); "Author of Light" (quartet:(Elliott-soprano;Chance-countertenor;Padmore-tenor;Harvey -baritone) and "Never weather-beaten Saile" (Chance).

4 out of 5 stars Rock N' Rollish Heavy Metal.......2003-02-07

Well, these guys were picked up by Peaceville in the 80's, but actually their career goes back to the early seventies, a time when many bands weren't even imagined or think about. Pentagram possess a sound which characterises an epoch, much alike Black Sabbath, these guys have a real gift to come up with harmonic passages and some fantastic catchy melodies. When compared with many bands from nowadays, this is of course easy-listening, and this sort of Rock N' Rollish Heavy Metal isn't produced anymore at all, so specially to me it is true bliss to put this record spinning and listen to the mid-paced tempos, the harmonic guitars & the exceptional dark feel this band emanates. It brings me back a lot of memories from stuff I listened on vinyl when I was kid, and perhaps for that particular reason I think the music on this album sounds very gloomy and the overall atmosphere adds up a strong doom edge to the all piece. In fact, "Turn to Stone", is almost like a classic album, Peaceville compiled an anthology of tracks taken from 3 Pentagram releases (all 3 released by Peaceville), "Relentless", "Be Forewarned" and "Day of Reckoning", among these albums some absolute classics can be found, case of "All your Sins", "Death Row", "Relentless", etc.
I feel many people who listen to Heavy Metal these days don't actually have a background on all these great bands, I also have my doubts if people realise that bands like Cream, Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath had a huge blues influence, the songs are of course all dominated by the truly killer riffs and of course by the other vital element, the rhyme-singing lyrics (that seem more to float like a poem) uttered by vocalist Bobby Liebling, which to be honest has many things in common with Ozzy himself.
There is no questioning that Pentagram are a band everyone should acquaint themselves with, whether you're a fan of Heavy Metal or not, the music is very enjoyable and you'll have a lot of quality minutes of music ahead.

    5 out of 5 stars Pentagram = TRUE Metal.......2003-01-09

Children, once again, it is time to trash all of your media hyped, watered down, pop-poser metal/mallcore cds and pick up a truly worthy Heavy Metal release. First of all, Pentagram are veterans. They've been doing this allmost as long as Black Sabbath. They are considered the very first American Doom Metal band. Now about this disk... It's basically a "best of" containing songs from their first 3 albums. The music is rock & roll from the deepest pits. Dark, brooding, angry at times, depressive at others, with a strong blues/jazz influence in the songwriting. The sound comes very close at times to Black Sabbath's first 4 albums. Guitarist Victor Griffin was and still is heavily inspired by Sabbath's Tony Iommi. Not a Black Sabbath rip-off by any means, more like very Sabbath influenced. That means HEAVY, dark, bluesy, and even quite evil sounding. True Heavy Metal in it's purest form. This is where it's at. Real songwriting. Real substance. Real METAL! True Metal is almost dead in the mainstream which has been literally FLOODED with Korn ripoffs, (c)rap-metal, and other watered down, hollow forms of hard pop music. Support real Metal and get this cd!
