Album Description

This album was thought by many, at the time, to be the last Darkthrone would ever produce. Not so. As it stands, this is an exhaustive foray even further into the primitive black metal chaos that they had been exploring over the past five albums, and is actually considered by many to be their greatest work. As it stands, this is like a survey of the influences of the years that had come before, from Bathory to Celtic Frost, Hellhammer to Thorns and Mayhem. Excellent, well-defined, exquisitely engineered paens to blasphemy and the call of the dark, with lyrics written by some of the most notable musicians in the Norwegian scene, including Garm, Ihsahn, etc. Features members from Satyricon, Storm & Isengard.

5 out of 5 stars So underated.......2007-07-27

This is a very powerful release from Darkthrone. Most people that are new to black metal only hear Transilvanian Hunger, which is a good solid album, but there are so many better Darkthrone records. This is among the best releases by Darkthrone. Very Celtic Frost. This is a very dark album. This album is up there with Blaze in the Northern Sky, and this album is better than under a funeral moon. Great album. I recommend this album to fans of black metal.

3 out of 5 stars I don't get it........2007-04-15

I dont get why Darkthrone is really so popular.I mean their newest CD wasnt horrible and had a refreshing punk twist to it, but mostly their songs consist of the same riffs over and over again. This CD is more like a snooze-fest that I've listened to once. I dont recommend this CD.

2 out of 5 stars Simply Awful.......2007-05-30

Satanic Doom Metal at it's worst. Theres no rythm to their songs on this crap, drums suck badly, guitaring is doodoo if you can hear it,quality is off and just easily put,it is an embarassment (musically) overall. I gave it 2 stars because I love the lyrics. I wish Misanthrope was a religion instead of a feeling. Might I recommend: Sargeist - Satanic Black Devotion. Even if you don't agree with my opinion, whatever. Just like everyone else,I'm judging the album by my taste and standards.

5 out of 5 stars "Ugliest work of art and violence ever seen by mortal men".......2007-04-20

I played this record to a work acquaintance and he said that the drums sound like they were played by a three-year-old. He likes Mudvayne, though, so his critique is not what i would call "entirely credible". Total Soul Rape is a tr00 black metal record and should be assessed as such. Latecomers to the scene, in terms of recorded material anyway, Craft continue the tradition of primitive, ugly black metal, but bring to the genre considerable technical prowess, which, perhaps somewhat unconventionally, includes blazing guitar solos and occasional artificial harmonics. The drumming relies on the good old alternate-kick-and-snare-as-fast-as-you-can routine, which is all one requires, or in fact wants to hear when it comes to black metal. This record does not innovate black metal in any sense. That's what makes it such an awesome black metal record. ...The beginning of the title track reminds me a lot of Sonic Youth for some reason... but now I am rambling....

5 out of 5 stars All must hail Craft.......2005-11-02

Craft, with a simple name, a simple album cover, and a simple mission, to destroy planet earth and all the whiney ass people that inhabit this pathetic planet! Great Black f$cking metal here!!! No wussy keyboards, no crappy female vokills for "atmosphere", this is real, raw, true torturous blackened metal! The name Total Soul Rape says it all! For that's exactly what this album does to you! I love blistering speed, but what i love about this band is the music is a lot slower, but it's not b/s "groove-crap", it's just...just buy this album along with there other 2!!! Great Metal from Sweden here!

4 out of 5 stars .......2005-09-06

This has got to be one of the best black metal releases by Moribund Records. This is total, annihilating black metal of the highest order with absolutely no compromises, no melodies, no female singing and no keyboards. It's just pure, horrific in-your-face black metal that hasn't forgotten its roots. Craft is from Sweden, and their music brings to mind the raw compositions of Arckanum and the macabreistic atmospheres of Abruptum, who are also Swedish, while bringing to life the spirit of the early `90s Norwegian pioneers, namely Darkthrone. Is this a bad thing? Not at all, if most black metal bands knew where they stand they never would have evolved into pointless electronic pop acts, like it has happened with many bands. Craft is simply being passed the torch and I can only see them getting stronger and developing into a force to be reckoned with. The essence of Craft's music is awe-inspiring, their vision is black and white (and that includes the CD booklet!) and their hateful hymns are some of the most punishing ones I've heard in a while. Don't be afraid...be frightened of releases like this.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, This Is GOOD Black Metal!!!.......2005-04-24

Craft is a black metal band that truly stays true and Total Soul Rape proves it. The dark, chilling atmosphere of buzz saw guitars mixed with the awful screams, and howls defines black metal. This CD is pure blasphmey, this is TRUE black metal!!!

      Product Description

Hailing from Poland, Morbid Execution will take you back to when metal started to be come more extreme. These guys can be considered a collaboration of everything from back in the day. It depends on how you see it but its old school death metal or black metal that has the sound of roots like Hellhammer, Venom and Celtic Frost. Musically Total Devotion is kind of simplistic, riffing wise, but its also kind of catchy. The drums arent anymore complex than a simple beat too, which they use throughout. He does change it up, but the main body of each song is very similar to each other...it speeds up thats about it. Death growls are used for the main vocals for the five the tracks.

      4 out of 5 stars It took a while..........2005-07-17

...but I finally tracked down a Moonfog version of this mid-period Darkthrone album (after seeing a few bootlegged versions which included Transilvainian Hunger as a bonus). After recently acquiring and subsequently falling in love with Panzerfaust, the album previous to Total Death, I knew I had to have this one as well. The first thing I noticed was that Fenriz did not write ANY of the lyrics (I'm curious why)and that instead, he recruited the elite of the elite from Norway's fabled black metal scene to fill out the record (Nocturno Culto wrote three or four of the tracks' lyrics). So what you have is an "all-star" feeling to Total Death, with Garm(Ulver), Ihsahn(Emperor), and Satyr(Satyricon) all lending a bit of their blackened personas to the ultimate barbarian metal band in the world. For the most part, this is not a departure from the Panzerfaust style, although the pace is quicker. Every once in a while you get a low down and dirty Celtic Frost riff, and there's even a full-on thrash song here, but there's no mistaking it's Darkthrone. Not as good as Panzerfaust in my opinion, but definitely up there with the rest of the mid- to late-period releases by these misanthropists.
