A new direction.......2007-06-25
Circa Survive's Juturna left a lot of people schocked because literally out of nowhere, one of today's most talented bands was born. Now, Circa Survive have released their eagerly-awaited follow-up to Juturna, and does it live up to the expectations?
The album starts off with one of Circa Survive's best tracks "Living Together" which showcases some nice guitar melodies and leads. Anthony Green still shows off his vocal talents in the same manner as the previous album, while still writing captivating lyrics. The drums are still as present as ever with the odd-time signatures that constitute Circa's trademark. The drummer especially stands out in the track "The difference between medicine and poison is in the dose" where he leads off in a 16th note beat on the hi-hat.
However, this release just doesn't have the same feeling as Juturna which had an overall mood and just flowed with not a false note. Here, the band tries out some different directions with songs like "mandala" or "Kicking Your Crosses Down" which are honestly skip tracks. We just feel in these songs that Circa isn't as confident as in their other songs. In Juturna, every song was a standout and every song had a different effect on the listener. For this release, all songs are good but only a few stand out as being classic Circa Survive tracks.
That is not to say the record is not good, obviously it is phenomenal and definitely refreshing due to its unequaled originality. It also has that unique atmosphere that makes Circa Survive so special.
The artwork of the album is also very original with very beautiful drawings and nice fold-out pages which definitely add on to the evasive mood that Circa create through their art.
Overall, I would definitely recommend all Circa Survive fans to get their hands on this new release. Indeed, I may have found this release weaker than Juturna but some people may like it more, it's up to you. But one thing is for sure, it's that Circa Survive are definitely a stand-out band who are gonna be here a long time and that it will take a long time before another band bursts out onto the scene and surprises thousands of listeners in the way this band did.
Standout tracks include: "Living Together" , "Carry Us Away" and "Your Friends Are Gone"

wow.......2007-06-21
You guys saying you didn't like mandala or kick your crosses down are insane. Crosses is probably my favorite song.
This record is epic, almost mars volta like. This is an experience. This band is so exciting to be a part of. I don't listen to much rock anymore but I was so happy when I heard this album last week. The vocals mesh SO WELL with the beautiful guitarwork. I just cannot say how impressed I am.
The album creates a very atmoshperic mood for me, and is very psychedelic (Green does a lot of drugs - I saw him play on mushrooms once), so the creativity just oozes out of every pore. Do yourself a favor and listen to this asap.
Juturna Still Owns This...But Good Nonetheless.......2007-06-13
This CD contains the greatest Circa song I've ever heard, "Living Together". Absolutely gorgeous tune.
This album really has a few standout tracks but some of them seem kind of repetitive (Tracks 2 and 3 especially).
Juturna was definitely a more solid album all the way through. I would not put this CD off nonetheless, it has some really solid tunes and Kicking Your Crosses Down has one of the prettiest hooks ever.
Worth the wait.......2007-05-31
It's been two years since "Juturna" and Circa Survive has been busy with tour after tour. I was nervous about this album because the guys haven't had much down time, but "On Letting Go" doesn't disappoint. Anthony Green's lyrics and vocals are as close to perfect as possible, and guitars and drums have improved greatly since their first record. "On Letting Go" is amazing from start to finish, and it's a welcome reminder that good music still exists.
pure art.......2007-05-30
ethereal. tragic. emotional. singular. philosophical. a waking dream-world. an experience. like a good drug, produces fledgling emotions of exuberance and melancholy. a perfect expansion of the mind and stirring of the heart. screams of loss while singing of hope. art.

I love this cd. It sort of sounds like Glassjaw if they were hurdling through space grasping desperately for footing. I love this cd.
Nothing to Sink Your Teeth Into!.......2007-01-19
Juturna, the debut album from Circa Survive is a bold attempt to push the musical envelope with a progressive take on the punk/emo sound. The problem is that while relatively creative and courageous, the album falls flat in most areas. It has virtually nothing for the listener to sink their teeth into. Just as soon the band finds a groove, they turn an about face and go off in a completely different sonic direction. The instrumentation, while bold, is so manic and impatient with itself that it is nearly impossible to feel any of the songs. In addition to that, the insanely high-pitched vocals of Anthony Greene quickly become more annoying than pleasing to the ear, especially when the guy refuses to sing anything resembling a catchy chorus. Being that this is supposed to be an experimental and progressive group, I'm sure all of these characteristics are purposeful, but in the end they make this effort sound confused, unfocused and utterly unmemorable. Check out Saosin's debut album instead.
average.......2006-10-06
What first brought me to the attention of this band is the obvious saosin who I found to be catchy and a pretty good listen but what stood out for me most of all was the vocals of Anthony Green. So looking at a lot of reviews on the high pitched, angelic vocalists new band circa survive made me eager to give them a listen. I heard a good three tracks including "the great golden baby" and was looking forward to purchasing the album. I thought the songs were sang beautify and the instruments were played well but something was missing, I just found the album repeating itself and every song sounding not dissimilar to the next. It lacked that little extra kick, I understand the idea genre of it but it just didn't seem to build up to anything. The songs are mono toned and the lyrics aren't anything special. In all honesty it was disappointing but there are a few gems on it having said this. I recommend you buy this album but don't expect to be blown away. Its nice easy listening but hardly tears into your emotions.
Not terrible, just forgettable.......2006-09-19
There's just nothing that stands out on this album--no catchy hooks or melodies, the guitar work is nothing amazing, the vocals have a certain sameness on all the songs--and to be honest, I find Anthony's high-pitched coo-to-screech vocal range rather grating and obnoxious.
The instrumentation isn't punchy or dynamic, it's just kind of...there. The songs aren't emo, alternative, indie, metal, or even rock really--and the lack of genre isn't really to the band's credit. I didn't hear any of your typical emo power chords on the CD, but maybe that would've helped cut through the sludge a bit and give the listener something familiar.
With "Act Appalled" (which recalls Quicksand to some extent) being one of the only exceptions, this CD just doesn't seem to have a pulse. None of it really stays with me, and I definitely can't distinguish one song from the next.
I do have to give Anthony Green kudos for leaving Saosin--without him they've signed a major label deal and if the tracks on their Myspace page are any indicator, we'll be hearing some incredible music from them.
creates some impossible hybrid bridging the gap between classic progressive rock and modern emo metalcore.......2006-09-17
We've been super into that new strain of epic, super complex emo prog lately, bands like Chiodos, Coheed And Cambria. Groups that combine killer metal riffing, super dense and complicated prog arrangements, with super emotive wailing vocals. Like a whole new breed of punk rockers re-discovered Yes and King Crimson and managed to create some impossible hybrid bridging the gap between classic progressive rock and modern emo metalcore.
There are about a million bands doing their own version these days, and admittedly most of them suck, but we'll still stick by Chiodos, and the first two Coheed records, and now we have the latest by Circa Survive, a dreamy, epic, psychedelic, dramatic emo prog outfit, who actually eschew the more metal elements that define most of their sonic brethren, focusing instead on texture and melody and mood. There is definitely a Mars Volta vibe, a lot of that has to do with the vocalist's impossibly high voice, on first listen it's hard to believe it's not actually a woman singing, clear and crystalline, a soaring near falsetto, the vocals drifting above dense harmonies, gorgeous melodies, a thick sonic tapestry of shoegazer guitars, angular riffs, complicated rhythms, all woven into haunting and strangely catchy mini epics.
None of the songs are outright 'pop song' catchy, but they all manage to suck you in and make it virtually impossible to avoid repeat listens. Heavy, but not in a metal way, just deep and emotional, darkly dramatic, with layers of sound that are continually shifting to reveal hidden parts and recombining into unexpected surprises. Probably won't be that much of a surprise, but this is one of my favorite records of the last few years. And actually, this came out last year, but who cares, here it is 2006 and we're still spinning it like crazy...

Los Lobos's ability to wade through disparate musical styles isn't the stuff of Elvis and the Beatles, but Los Lobos did it on their debut album. And, unlike much of the material Los Lobos cut their teeth on as a Los Angeles Top 40 cover band, there is nothing lowest-common-denominator about the band's original music. "Don't Worry Baby" is a blues rocker gritty enough for John Lee Hooker; rockabilly meets country, courtesy of David Hidalgo's lap steel, on "Our Last Night"; Cesar Rosas pays homage to the band's Mexican roots on the mariachi-style "Corrido #1"; and "Will the Wolf Survive?" is an infectious jangle rocker that became an early MTV hit. All-Time Classic!.......2006-09-22
I guess one of the main reasons you're reading the reviews is to try and gauge whether or not to buy the album so I'll try make this as brief as possible. THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS EVER MADE. Los Lobos cover many different styles with total excellence. The opener Don't Worry Baby is still probably my favourite Los Lobos track but the rest of the songs are magnificent and brilliantly played. Take the opening to Evangeline and the sax solo on the fantastic I Got Loaded - just great music. Buy this you will never regret it.
All Time Classic.......2005-12-26
I bought this on vinyl in 1985 and it was an instant classic , one of the best albums i'd ever heard. That slab of plastic soon wore out and i've bought it again three times on CD ( friends who loved it got two of them as gifts ).The reason i'm writing this however is to appeal to whoever owns the rights to get this superb album re -released. It's a disgrace that such a brilliant classic has not been Remastered and put out with new sleevenotes , extra tracks etc and given the respect that so many inferior releases by other artists seem to get. Someone sort it out and let this wondrous release have a new lease of life , please !
SIMPLY AMAZING!!!.......2002-06-09
HOW WILL THE WOLF SURIVE? is the full length debut by LOS LOBOS and boy did they hit the mark here. This album has a full range of music which helps to showcase the bands amazing talents. DONT WORRY BABY and I GOT LOADED have that R&B, slightly bluesy sound to them that makes these some rocking songs. CORRIDO #1 and SERENATA NORTENA have that Tex-Mex rhythms to them that help to showcase the bands Mexican roots. I also suggest that you give a listen to A MATTER OF TIME, WILL THE WOLF SURVIE?, OUR LAST NIGHT, and THE BREAKDOWN. I am really hard pressed to find any weak spots on this album. This is a truly amazing debut album for any type of band, and LOS LOBOS has continued to this day to make great music, which might not sound like what is popular at anytime, but it blows everything else out of the water. I highly suggest to any serious music fan to buy this album. I dont think you will be disappointed, I wasnt. I also recommend that you pick up GOOD MORNING AZTLAN, and THIS TIME. PEACE ESE!!
Straight from the soul.......2001-03-20
This terrific mid-80s release is a great place to start if you have not sampled the work of Los Lobos, one of this country's most essential bands. From traditional Mexican folk music to straight-ahead rockers, to outright country the band sounds fresh and free of musical preconceptions.
One of the attractions of "How Will the Wolf Survive" is that it keeps the listener pleasantly off balance throughout. In the first three cuts, for example, they deliver a steaming rocker ("Don't Worry Baby"), a poigant but topical ballad on the hopes and dreams of migrant workers ("Matter of Time") and the Hispanic roots piece "Corrido #1."
Los Lobos pulls off this musical diversity because whatever the play, they remain true to the spirit of the tune. For example, when they take on the C&W tune "Our Last Night," they take you back to the honkey tonk, but they are not mocking the song.
Best of all, the band just sounds like they are having a great time playing. Listen to the sly rocker "The Breakdown" (complete with accordian breaks) and the drinking tune "I Got Loaded" for examples of their exuberant tone and attitude.
Los Lobos continues to this day to show that when you remain open to the musical sources and ideas, you never lack for inspiration. Messrs. Hidalgo, Rosas and company deserve a big round of applause for the tasty smorgasbord they offer up on "How Will the Wolf Survive?"
A Landmark Album.......2001-02-22
I became aware of Los Lobos during the early 1980s with the release of their EP "...And a Time To Dance" and made sure I saw them live when they were doing the promotional tour for this album. They have since become a national act but How Will The Wolf Survives stands as one of the most enduring albums of its day. With the airwaves awash in glamrock and corporate-rock powerhouse groups, Los Lobos was a breath of fresh air. Its infectious mix of hard-driving roots rock, country, and blues judiciously tinged with the pulsing accordion of David Hidalgo provided an antidote to the stale pap being cranked out in the top-40 and AOR formats. My favorites are the irresistable Don't Worry Baby, I Got Loaded, the country-ish Our Last Night and, arguably the best song on the album, the accordion-driven The Breakdown. I think the title cut and the two Norteno songs are mediocre but the quality of the rest of the music gives it the five stars. How Will the Wolf Survive stands as the best mostly English-language album issued by Los Lobos. It is a landmark album that has yet to be matched by any of the band's subsequent releases except for the fabulous La Pistola y El Corazon. If your tastes run to the eclectic with a strong leaning toward the southwest, then this comes highly recommended. And by the way, the accordion is an important component of the music, so if you don't like accordions, you are not going to like this.

Irresistible.......2005-07-29
From beginning to end this CD is pure delight. A great recording has great music, a great performance, and great sound; this one scores on all three counts.
Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals dominated Broadway in the 1940s and 1950s, and American musical theater has produced no more consistently eloquent and durable voice than Richard Rodgers. From his fertile genius flowed a surprising number of memorable songs, many of which have passed into and become an accepted and beloved part of modern American culture.
This well-filled CD (77:36) features symphonic arrangements (all but two by Robert Russell Bennett) of the music from Oklahoma (1943), Carousel (1945), State Fair (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Flower Drum Song (1958), and The Sound of Music (1959). All the great tunes are here in suites from each musical that average 10-12 minutes in length. The arrangements are expert: rich, varied, and colorful. The performances are polished, idiomatic, and irresistible; Kunzel and this orchestra are thorough masters of this kind of material. And Telarc's sound (recorded 1991) is state-of-the-art (engineer Michael Bishop deserves to take a bow).
In short, there's nothing here to cloud your listening pleasure (the only quibble I can imagine is that some of your favorites may not last long enough), so it's hard for me to envision anyone with ears and a taste for music who wouldn't enjoy this CD. Warmly recommended. Finally, if you like this one as much as I do, you might want to know that the same team has produced a companion volume, the Lerner & Lowe Songbook for Orchestra.
"Some Enchanted Evening" with Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops.......2003-12-26
Erich Kunzel's Rodgers and Hammerstein anthology with the Cincinatti Pops Orchestra is one of the best and most ravishing instrumental Rodgers and Hammerstein albums of all time. With sumptuous arrangements and warm, natural Telarc recording, this glorious 77-minute CD presents sweeping, melodic arrangements of over 60 Rodgers and Hammerstein selections, spanning eight scores, and Kunzel allows the Pops to play with a characterful and polished understanding of the Rodgers and Hammerstein idiom. The disc is enough to cheer you up on a dull day and make you smile, and it might even want to make you feel like a convert to Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals.
This CD has all the scores arranged chronologically. The OKLAHOMA! suite that opens this disc promises a feast for the senses, Kunzel ably evokes the territory's "bright, golden haze" in the way he conducts the various excerpts, until you feel the atmosphere of the country charm of the show, and the love-affair between Curly and Laurey. Then, in CAROUSEL, he ably evokes the pathos of this tragic R&H masterwork, especially in the truncated Waltz, but he leads a wonderfully melodic "June is Bustin' Out All Over" and a devotional "You'll Never Walk Alone." Although this suite does not include Billy's pivotal Soliloquy, it includes "If I Loved You" as an expression of his love for Julie, and within minutes you could be soaked in the ups and downs of the show's mood.
After a brief STATE FAIR suite, with sweeping renditions of "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "It's a Grand Night for Singing", we are brought into the disc's showstopping highlights. These highlights are the excerpts from SOUTH PACIFIC, THE KING AND I, and THE SOUND OF MUSIC. But yet Kunzel conducts the rest of the disc until the various suites amount to a series of showstoppers. These three suites present wonderfully-arranged versions of their many familiar classic songs, with well-played solos. The SOUTH PACIFIC suite presents the songs in chronological order, yet preserves the atmosphere of the show at the same time. Kunzel ably brings out the romance in "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Younger than Springtime," and contrasts it with the exotic and dreamlike "Bali Hai'i" and the comic "There is Nothing like a Dame" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair". Although the suite ends quietly with a reprise of "Dites-Moi" rather than the reprise of "Some Enchanted Evening," within minutes we are swept into the KING AND I suite. Kunzel ably brings out the Oriental pathos in this score, and he captures the warmth of Anna's rapport with the King's Siamese children in "Getting to Know You", and with the King himself in "Shall We Dance." There is also romance in the love ballads "I Have Dreamed" and "We Kiss in a Shadow." Similarly, in the selection from THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Kunzel conducts this until the orchestra soaks itself in the atmosphere of this Austrian R&H score. This SOUND OF MUSIC suite has more of a feel of the score compared to the bonus track on Sony's reissued version of the Broadway recording. You can almost feel as if you are following the progress of the Trapp family and how it lifts its spirits with the joy of music. Kunzel gives us a soaring version of the title song, and spirited versions of "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favourite Things." He balances it with the open-air quality of "Edelweiss" and "The Lonely Goatherd." Although this suite could have included "Something Good," the love ballad written for the film, the three recollections of the songs that were cut from the movie only last for a while. And, the towering version of "Climb Every Mountain" crowns this portion of the disc, and this sumptuously-produced recording. But, I should also mention the infectuous FLOWER DRUM SONG medley, where Kunzel turns this underrated score into a work of art, until it convinces you to buy the cast recording. And, don't forget about the brief CINDERELLA WALTZ, too, when Kunzel conducts it magically, until you feel like you are in the company of Cinderella and the Prince. He is able to show how this R&H score marked a comeback for R&H after the failiures of Me and Juliet, and Pipe Dream.
Overall, this glorious Rodgers and Hammerstein recording is guarunteed to make you want to pucker your lips out for a whistle or sing along (to paraphrase another revew for Kunzel's Disney Spectacular disc) - even if this recording is music only, and as long as you know the words to the songs (and you might know a large handful of them already.) There is always a certain magic in this fine CD that makes you feel like you're sitting in the theatre watching these musicals, until it makes you feel like it is truly, to borrow two R&H song titles, "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Something Wonderful" to be in Kunzel's company for this R&H offering. It would certainly be one recording that could make you feel willing to buy the complete cast recordings of the shows. And I guaruntee that it will make you feel willing to pull out your existing copies of the cast recordings to listen to them again. I also guaruntee that it will be a cornerstone in any Rodgers and Hammerstein collection, just as it is in mine. Recommended heartily to any Rodgers and Hammerstein enthusiast and to fans of Erich Kunzel's work. And, you can play it while reading the Richard Rodgers biography, Musical Stages, until Rodgers himself would count this as his favourite disc in the afterlife.
By the way, most of the arrangements for the suites on this CD were done by the veteran R&H orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett, and it surely adds to the appeal of this recording. This itself is enough to amount to the icing on the cake, since Kunzel conducts them well on here, and since this recording still allows the suites to have the original theatrical atmosphere. And, although this recording is like the Mauceri collection of the Rodgers & Hammerstein overtures in compiling orchestral suites of Rodgers & Hammerstein, I think that I like the Kunzel recording even more because Kunzel has more magic in his conducting of these suites.
Excellent!.......2003-04-08
This is one of the best Erich Kunzel/Cincinnati Pops collections we own! A must for Rodgers and Hammerstein fans, too.
Great Arrangments.......2001-09-02
This is a first rate album with great arrangments and orchestrations. If you're a Rodgers and Hammerstein fan, you can't afford to miss this specatacular album

First Day Of The Rest Of My Life.......2005-11-07
This song has taught me a hard lesson. I am going to stop pining over a 34-year-old relationship. Today while feeling sorry for myself I too realized "I will survive." Walking in and out of my life for the past few months, today I finally reached the point where I just won't take it anymore. If you are feeling sorry for yourself, play this song over and over, you will feel much stronger and will stop crying and pitying yourself, I did.....

ok, so it's really bad when there are people out there who pretend to be so educated about music, but are actually just rambling retards... an undergraduate @ the Eastman School of Music, I am taking a theory class in which we are studying this song. there's nothing wrong with it, and if nothing else, it's a great way to remember the descending fifths sequence... Although I am an 80s child born in the late 70s, I think this is one of the best songs I've heard. For any woman who knows what it's like to be put down or walked on by someone (which is all of us), this is the perfect song for you. It tells the story of a woman who's had enough and she's not going to take it anymore. She's moving on and she's ready to show the world what she's made of. A true, innovative "girl power" song.
Great song but..........2003-07-27
I have to sorta agree with hankaaron. Don't get me wrong I listen to this song at least 3 times a week. The words are very meaningful and emotional! Flame on Gloria!
But, from a musical stand point it is a boring song. First off, the song has no chorus. It follows a simple circle of 5ths chord progression until it hits a B diminished chord instead of the B-flat so it can jump to E major then back to the home key of A minor....then the same sequence is repeated for an additional 8 minutes. There is no breakdown into other keys. It wouldn't have hurt for it to play around in the relative major key of C for a few bars, then return back to A minor.
The strings and horns add musical color to the repetition. And Gloria's voice and the meaning of the words ensured it's success.
But, not all people listen to music for the value of the words, or the beat. Some people are not tone deaf and expect good musical creativity from artists in addition to great lyrics.

Two CDs' worth of Gaynor is, frankly, a lot: Beyond her two classics (the brilliant, cyclically relentless title track and "Never Can Say Goodbye"), there's not much that made it above the dustier reaches of the charts, and not much that deserved to. Gaynor was a disco diva by the numbers, and her career lived and died with the style--her records are generic in the sense that they were absolutely of their genre. So I Will Survive is programmed for discophiles more than for Gaynorphiles--the real star here is the production. The set includes three medleys that occupied full sides of her first three disco albums, as well as tracks from her '74-'81 albums that show off what her arrangers could do. --Douglas Wolk

one of the best Gloria compilations.......2004-04-24
However, like a few other people, I am disapointed a few key tracks like Substitute is missing. I think the song selections showcase Gloria's diversity in song selections and let's people know that she is a lot more than the singer that sang "I will survive". Hopefully Universal will reissue her "Love tracks" album on a double cd set with bonus cuts on cd #2, like the original I will survive in Spanish and the 12 inch mix of Substitute as well as the radio edits of I will survive and Substitute. Just a thought anyways. Peace out.
Never Can Say Goodbye.......2004-02-19
To date this is the best Gloria Gaynor Collection out there. If I was a first time Gloria Gaynor buyer this would be the cd to buy. As well as the usual songs, there are some never before released tracks. I was pleased with the sound quality but not too happy with the order they were placed in. However there were a few tracks still absent like: TOUCH OF LIGHTNING , WE JUST CAN'T MAKE IT, SEARCHIN', FALSE ALARM, and YO VIVIRE (I will survive in Spanish) original extended version. Not one of the numerous remixes of the same title.
The almost-definitive collection.......2001-11-10
Great collection ! Everything is here -including the fantastic « Anybody wanna party » in its 12" remix. Well, almost everything is here... Still missing : « Substitute » (the 8:30 version) and « Sobreviviré » (« I will survive » in spanish). And why « I kinda like me » is edited ? Anyway, this is the best Gaynor's collection available.
The definite Gloria Gaynor compilation.......2000-03-17
This 2CD-set is the definite Gloria Gaynor-compilation. Although Gloria Gaynor has always been referred to as "The Queen of Disco", she actually only had a limited handful of hits, and her albums were - with a few exceptions - never as memorable, magical and coherent as Donna Summer's albums, so far they haven't been released on CD either but with this set, there really is no need for it either. The full-length 8-min. recording of ... yes ... "I Will Survive" opens the ball, and it strucks me every time I hear it what an all-time classic this song really is! Next is of course Gloria's ground-breaking side-long medley of "Honey Bee", "Never Can Say Goodbye" and "Reach Out I'll Be There" from her first LP, and Meco Monardo's tight production and Tom Moulton's excellent mix is still outstanding. Her two subsequent LP's "Experience Gloria Gaynor" & "I've Got You" followed the same concept, and both 18-min. medleys are also included here, and although the songs didn't make the same impact on the singles charts, "Casanova Brown", "(If You Want It) Do It Yourself", "Let's Make A Deal" and "Be Mine" are brilliant. For her fourth album, "Glorious", miss Gaynor teamed up with disco maestro Gregg Diamond, the slow jamming 9-min. dance delight "Most Of All" is included here. At this time, Gloria Gaynor was however having a hard time regaining the disco throne, and her "Park Avenue Sound" album from 1978 didn't help her much. The two tracks included: "This Love Affair" and "You're All I Need To Get By" are pleasant but forgettable, but then came "I Will Survive" from her "Love Tracks" album which is also represented here by a funky 12" mix of "Anybody Wanna Party". Following up such an enormeous success is definitely an ungrateful task, Gloria and the Dino Fekaris/Freddie Perren-team did try with "Let Me Know (I Have A Right)", a strong song in itself but too much a plagiate of "I Will Survive" and from then on it went downhill with her two last albums on Polydor, "Stories" (1980) and "I Kinda Like Me" (1981), although the title track of the latter is quite enjoyable. There's a couple of competent adult ballads on the set's second disc as well as her terrific disco version of "Walk On By" from her second album. The only thing, Polydor really didn't have to include is the 1993 remix of "I Will Survive" with Gloria sounding like Minnie Mouse, the original mix stands as strong now as it did then. Gloria's Hi-NRG version of "I Am What I Am" from 1983 (which made the UK Top 20) would have been a more essential inclusion but it wasn't released on Polydor. Still, this is a masterpiece compilation, the impeccable design + booklet with extensive liner notes and pictures and credits of all the albums.

Album Description
Murder By Death fluidly orchestrates a sonic boom that is part horror movie climax, part western barroom brawl and a gloss of wintry distortion. Their new album delivered follow up to their debut, "Like the Exorcist, But More Breakdancing" (EB021).

Like whiskey?.......2007-06-07
These guys are simply AWESOME! I saw them in concert with HeavyHeavyLowLow, Fear Before The March Of Flames, and Thursday, and I was stunned. Live, they are a elegantly sloppy band. This cd is Murder By Death at their height. "Until Morale Improves, The Beatings Will Continue" is by far my favorite song on this cd. So, in the end, if you've never heard Murder By Death before, purchase this cd now. You will not be disapointed!
Amazing, Buy this CD now!.......2006-03-30
I had been a fan of Murder By Death for about a year before this CD was released. I picked it up the day it came out and was instantly blown away. The songs on this CD flow perfectly together and songs themselves are amazing as well. Murder By Death is one of the most musically talented bands that I have ever heard, and they are by far my favorite. This CD is amazing, buy it now.
This album is incredible.......2005-10-29
I first heard this band a few months ago when a member of my tapers group told me about them and asked me to tape them when they came to my town. I was completely blown away by this album. It has not left my car cd player since. This album is nothing short of brilliant and I cannot believe these guys have been over looked. Buy this album, hell buy 12, this band is way more worthy of your support than 99.9% of the bands out there.
Poetry and Tone.......2005-09-05
I was introduced to this album by a friend who said, "I don't know what it is, you'd just like it." That explanation coming from a music major who usually has a lot to say on the matter.
I'm not a big fan of either music or poetry, but this has good aspects of both. Great music founds a base for the lyrics, which is described often as the story of the Devil in a western setting, but then again, there seems to be a lot of political meaning to it. You know, Texas, oil, nuclear war, all that wonderful imagery. In fact I'm rather surprised at the other reviews of this album that neglect to mention this aspect, but I think that's more a power of poetry: double-meanings, the literal and the abstract. That's the way poetry should be, but modern poetry tends to throw that out in favor of simplistic blank-verse.
The tone of this music, though, is usually what predominates. As much as I like the vocals, I like most to just sit back and let the music take me along on its own power. I don't know, I'm a post-rock fan, apocalyptic songs are my thing.

i wrote this over a year ago, but it still holds true........2005-05-20
this entire record is a elegant masterpiece. it begins with "devil in mexico", a prelude of things to come. this record is actually a storybook about western towns in Mexico and America being attacked by the devil. it seems strange how you can link a classy masterpiece with such an abstract, gloomy, even eccentric topic like that. but murder by death does it, and they produce a beautiful album. it is like nothing i have ever heard.
"killbot2000" is an interesting, sort-of-upbeat song, yet... not. since this record supposedly takes place in the west, it reminds me of a lecture or prayer after a gunfight, especially toward the end where Adam is chanting.
"until morale improves, the beatings will continue" made me laugh at first. just the title alone is worth questioning. this was the first track on the album that i listened to repeatedly, mainly to hear the bridge, because it is perfectly executed... even as short as it is. the chorus is catchy. i suppose i would select this to be a single, because of its immediate appeal.
i feel that "three men hanging" is the weakest song on the album. because it's one of the softest? maybe. i think it's the weakest, because it lacks the speed and emotional intricacy of the other tracks. this has steel guitar, cello, and light snare and cymbals. i still found it enjoyable and it captures the "western" feel very well. it's just not up to par with the rest.
the record really takes form after the intermission, track number five. "a master's in reverse psychology" is brilliant from the beginning. it's exciting and doesn't let up, even after it's finished. i particularly enjoyed the piano in the pre-chorus sections. to keep the album flowing perfectly, "the desert is on fire" is an upbeat song with a allegro-like tempo.
my personal favorite song on the album is "that crown don't make you a prince". this is an amazing composition. it is the most emotional and suspenseful song. although somewhat melancholy in nature, it has a beautiful mix of guitar, piano, and cello. the best on the album, i feel. the song has many peaks and slopes but is concluded without any loose ends. i consider this song the climax of the story.
another melancholy tune follows. this time it's of slower tempo. "pillars of salt" takes me back to the days of playing final fantasy ix with its soft piano and cello. i am just reminded of game music by the very nature of this piece. beautifully done, and probably my second favorite track.
"end of the line" is brilliant its own way. while slow to pick up, it builds to a very powerful singing performance from Adam and perfect correspondence from the instruments in the band. after the song concludes, there's a two minute instrumental. i'm not entirely sure if it was meant to be part of the song, but i felt that it was connected, like a final farewell as the album and story close.
buy this album now. find it and hold onto it. if you don't, and the devil doesn't make you, i'll have to.

Nostalgia can be as onerous as it is seductive. The remembrances of things past often sacrifices hard truths for emotional reassurance. While this filmed love letter to '60s soul by producer Roger Friedman, legendary documentary filmmakers D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus (Dylan's Don't Look Back and Monterrey Pop) sometimes glosses over the hardscrabble roots (and sometimes fate) of its subjects, it's hard not to like a soundtrack that simply showcases the likes of Wilson Pickett, Ann Peebles, and Jerry Butler onstage. If Wilson Pickett's maniacal energy has mellowed somewhat with age, the passing years have only refined Jerry Butler's magic voice (showcased here on his hits "Your Precious Love" and "Only the Strong Survive") like a Stradivarius. But there's some justice to be found here as well. The undersung Ann Peebles gets her due on a strong performance of "Breaking Up Somebody's Home," while original Supreme Mary Wilson rewrites some difficult history with a take on "Someday We'll Be Together," a Supremes session from which she she was originally excluded. And the project's devotion to sweet soul music is almost religious, the fervor Rufus and Carla Thomas bring to their "Nightime is the Right Time" is as good as gospel. --Jerry McCulley

A hard-to-find, but very good thrash record.......2006-08-03
Only true classics deserve 5 stars, whereas only corporate drivel deserves 1 star, like a Britney Spears album. The highly sought after 'Survive' by thrash also-rans Nuclear Assault is a very good thrash record. Three and a half stars.
One thing that may have held back Nuclear Assault is that they never had any "catchy" hit, perhaps because John Connelly's scratchy vocals just aren't good enough for most people. I happen to like them and they are certainly a cut above most thrash bands (he doesn't growl or anything), but I realize they are an acquired taste.
My favorite track on the album, which was also released with a video, is 'Brainwashed'. It has a really cool riff and great, unrelenting energy. I even like the lyrics, LOL! Funny, most reviewers here don't seem to like this song that much. This is a classic thrash anthem. The record has other highlights: 'Rise from the Ashes', 'Great Depression', and even 'Survive', 'Fight to be Free' and 'F#' are pretty good. There are some soft spots: 'Human Rights' is pure speed metal but with an average riff and completely incomprehensible singing. 'Wired' and 'Technology' are unremarkable.
Overall the record is a solid listening experience, where even the weaker songs are decent. It has some pretty killer solos and impressive rhythm section. Another plus is that the tunes don't all sound the same; there are a lot of different song structures. This record is 31 minutes long, but I'd say this quick turnover is desirable because, save for 'Rise from the Ashes' and 'Brainwashed', there's nothing really catchy here. The album requires a lot of repeated listens to pick up all the melodies.
Due to the general high quality of songs here this is a must buy for thrash fans. One can get this CD for about $25 on eBay, if you are patient. But this is no 'Ride the Lightning' and should be treated as such. Casual metal listeners and general music fans should probably borrow it from a friend first and listen to it for a while to see if they like it.
One of the most overlooked metal albums of all time........2006-06-23
Nuclear Assault's "Survive" is the one of the most underated and overlooked metal albums of all time. During the late 1980's it got lost in the glut of all these wanna be poser hair bands as well as being overshadowed by the likes of Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth. From listening to it is like getting hit over the head with a sledgehammer. It's too bad it's still out of print and costs an arm and a leg for a used copy. I've bought my out of print copy off here for $60.00 and to me it's worth every penny. I keep my copy of Survive in a secret place under lock and key (he! he!)! I've seen Nuclear Assault live 3x when they got back together at various metalfests and let me tell you they blew the roof off the goddamn place! NA falls into the same category as Sacred Reich as one of the most overlooked and underated metal bands of all time. Both bands are similar with similar subject material and now have CDs that are out of print with their used ones costing an arm and a leg. Happy Hunting Folks!
Very ambitious!!!!.......2006-03-31
Nuclear Assault's best along with "Handle with care". Back in a day i get this gem on cassette, but now is out of print and the only copies around expense your wallet. This group shows their talent here, with chaotic thrashing riffs, with the characterictic hardcore influence. The vocals are impresive. So this record is history, get it!!
One of the best metal albums of 1988!.......2005-09-07
It's sad that the kids these days grow up thinking that Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer was where all the good Thrash was back in the good old days. If you take the best of all the out of print Thrash there is, it easily overwhelms these four bands careers by several fold. Enter: Nuclear Assault. One of the forgotten (not here) East Coast giants of metal.
Having already the successful '85 demo "Back With a Vengeance", 1986's full length album "Game Over" and The '87 EP "The Plague", Nuclear Assault was off to the races. 1988 and 1989 would mark the two most sucessful years of their career.
"Survive" has the classic N.A. Thrash/Hardcore sound produced very well by famed Randy Burns. Every song on here that is a serious song is great (there are some silly interludes as with any Assault record). The guitars of Bramante and Connelly are excellent with some great riffs and some dual solo work which works well (see the solo on F-Sharp). The drumming of Glenn Evans is as brutal as ever and is probably the best drumming on any Nuclear Assault album. The bass is mixed in well so you can always hear it well...and it is thunderous and fat sounding. Would you expect anything less from Lilker?
The one draw back is Connelly's vocals sound very much like a rabid hyenia on this record; his vocals go from a clean mid-range hollering to a piercing high of "AHHHHHHH!!!!" Sounded better on "Game Over".
You don't know jack about Thrash if you don't own this album. Think it ends at Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Overkill, Exodus, or Testament? Think again. Best songs: Rise from the Ashes, F-Sharp, Fight to Be Free, and Equal Rights. To top it all off, there is a cover of Led Zepplin's "Good Times Bad Times" -worth the price of admission alone.
Pretty powerful sh*t.......2005-08-11
This band never got due credit for their material. This album is tight and aggressive. The singer's voice is plaintive and strong. The lyrics aren't bad either.
