ON THE ROCKS ROCKS & PROUD WORDS SING.......2007-01-24
URIAH HEEP'S SINGER DAVID BYRON AND KEYBOARD/GUITAR
AND SONGWRITER KEN HENSLEY RELEASED THESE TWO SOLO
EFFORTS AND AS A HEEP FAN I WAS QUITE SUPRISED
BY JUST HOW GOOD THEY ARE. BYRON'S BAND HAS THAT
BRITISH STONES/FACES FEEL. SONGS LIKE REBECCA,
LITTLE BY LITTLE AND START BELIEVING ALL COULD'VE
BEEN RADIO HITS. TOO BAD. KEN HENSLEY HAS A SLOWER
FEEL LIKE HE DID WITH HEEP. THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF
RAIN THAT WAS ON MAGICIAN'S BIRTHDAY IS HERE AND HE
SOUNDS LIKE BYRON SINGING IT. BUT OTHER SONGS LIKE
FROM TIME TO TIME, KING WITHOUT A THRONE AND THE
COUNTY SOUNDING LAST TIME MAKE IT WORTH A LISTEN
OF ANY FAN. I'VE HAVEN'T TAKEN IT OUT OF MY PLAYER
SINCE I GOT IT. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ANY HEEP FAN.

Classic "URIAH HEEP" LIVES ON !!!.......2004-12-27
I became aquainted with the "Heep" back in 1973. A friend stationed in Germany came home with a copy of "Salisbury". After ONLY ONE listening session, I was hooked. This album was more addictive than any drug !!! My musical tastes were never the same. For twenty five years I was aware of only the first seven albums (thanks to non-existent promotion from U.S. record execs). So...I was somewhat surprised to see "Proud Words" for sale. I took a chance and bought this cd (based on the other reviewer's opinions) and received not only "Proud Words" but also "Eager to Please" on the same disc....Now I was really skeptical !!! It's gotta' be a filler. MAN, WAS I WRONG !!!
Both albums are "ABSOLUTE ESSENTIALS" if you are a fan to early "Heep".
I now understand who was truly the driving force behind UH in the early days. It was without a doubt KEN HENSLEY and to some extent Mick Box with his rich, note sounding guitar (who appears on these albums from time to time).
All I can say from this point on: I scored by getting both albums for the price of one. If you don't have these albums in your collection, too bad !!!
Top of the Heep!.......2002-11-15
Uriah Heep's organist/guitarist/vocalist/songwriter/resident genius sets out to do a solo project (OK, it was more like a Heep album without lead singer David Byron and lead guitarist Mick Box, given that Gary Thain and Lee Kerslake played bass and drums on it) and winds up with a more subdued album than most Heep efforts, but one that rewards the listener more and more with each subsequent hearing. Some of Ken's most moving compositions can be found here; particular standouts are "Black Hearted Lady", "Go Down", "The Last Time", "When Evening Comes", "Cold Autumn Sunday", "From Time To Time", and the title track, not to mention a nice rendition of "Rain" from Heep's "The Magician's Birthday". A must-have for fans of Uriah Heep, or just of good songwriting and impassioned performances.
And as far as any other reviewers have commented on the feasibility of Ken filling in for David Byron full-time as Heep lead vocalist, I can only mention that Ken sang lead with Heep extremely well on such classics as "Lady in Black", "High Priestess", most of "Paradise/The Spell", "Firefly", and parts of "The Magician's Birthday"...
...Oh, and also on what's possibly the best lead vocal, and probably the absolute heaviest track Heep ever did: "Look at Yourself" (sounding so much like Byron that a *lot* of Heepsters don't realize it's Ken, not David!). In any case, buy this album! You'll thank me, you'll thank Ken Hensley, and you'll thank yourself.
What a gem!!.......2002-01-26
Simply one of the best albums or cd's that I own. My favourites are Go Down, When Evening Comes,Cold Autumn Sunday and King Without A Throne. The song Rain is almost as good as the version on Uriah Heep's 'The Magician's Birthday' album. I've been listening to Proud Words for 29 years and I never tire of it. That's how good this cd is!!! You will not be disappointed!
Mr.Heep, Mr.Humble!.......2001-08-21
Ken really was the man behind Heep! A very quiet, understated musician, who i believe, really was the main force in their writing! Granted , during their heyday, they truly were a 'Band' (1972-75) and all seemed headed in the right direction - which went all over the place since then (i daren't even listen to them now!!) but, 'Proud Words' holds a banner of identity which 'Heep' never found again. This album could have been released amoung their greats...'Demons And Wizards', 'Magician', 'Sweet Freedom' and would have been a classic! It also truly shows Ken's talents as a writer/musician/and singer...probably better than Dave Byron who relied on a dreadful signature scream!!! to prabably sound like Ian Gillan of 'Purple'! Although this album, like most Heep, sounds dated (very 70's), it is from the heart and honest. If you like the 70's Heep, you'll love this! If you like them in later years, you'll think it too soft! It , anyway, is the true sound of the original band and a very good album that he only managed to touch on in small amounts on later releases. Definitely his best work! Great tracks: From Time to Time, Rain, King Without a Throne, Black Hearted Lady.
Honest songs........2001-04-22
When I bought "Proud Words On A Dusty Shelf" I was very much into Uriah Heep and Mr. Hensley was my man. I simply loved his songwriting in Uriah Heep. so when he made a solo album I was deligheted and surprised at the same time because the songwriting on "Proud Words On A Dusty Shelf" was so different form the stuff he was doing with Uriah Heep. I simply fell in love with this album because of it's honesty and simplicity. This album is my all time favorite. I'm actually lost for words here. "THANK YOU VERY MUCH MR. KEN HENSLEY"
