4 out of 5 stars A Fine Example of Excellent Live Guitar Rock.......2007-05-30

Live and Dangerous was a revelation for me; although I have always enjoyed Thin Lizzy's studio recordings, I never appreciated how powerful a band they were until hearing them live. The twin guitar attack led by Scott Gorham really shines on these tracks, and Phil Lynot's voice is in fine form. This album definitely ranks high on my list of the greatest live rock albums of all time. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is due to the poor sound quality of the CD, which was disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Great live album from underrated band.......2007-05-13

I had this album on vinyl as a teenager. Bought it for a trip down memory lane - not always a good idea. Unlike other youthful memories, this stands the test of time. Thin Lizzy were a great band - huge in the UK, not so in the US. This album shows them at their peak and what a talent Phil Lynott was - albeit a wasted one.

If you like "Boys are Back in Town" and want to try Thin Lizzy, this album is a better way to go than any Greatest Hits collection.

5 out of 5 stars classic live album.......2007-05-12

Like Made in Japan of Deep purple, this live and dangerous is one of the most important albums of all times

5 out of 5 stars The poop on the Thin (1976-79).......2007-02-21

In a rash of live rock albums of the late '70s, this was one of the most fun. The selections and performances are excellent.

The Thin had been on tour in '76/'77 as opener for Queen during the 'News of the World' tour and had been pictured with Roger Taylor's huge Chinese gong ('Tie Your Mother Down') behind Downey's drums (note the photo on the cover of 'LAD'). Needless to say the first note on the subsequent Bad Reputation album was the same gong in G for 'Soldier of Fortune'. I really did see that coming!

As a cover band in Surf City we got into the Thin VERY EARLY in the rise of 'Boys Are Back' (itself a sort of theme song for us) and we did something from every Thin album from Jailbreak through Black Rose. Our favorite and best had to have been 'Dancin' in the Moonlight', in fact a very un-Thin-like song that they did live with the help of the sax player from the Graham Parsons Band, who were Thin's opening act on the '77/'78 tour from which LAD is taken. Memory recalls that of these two tours the earlier one was better, and some of LAD was reportedly taken from it. Once Garry Moore rejoined Thin Lizzy in '79 (for Black Rose and the dreadful Chinatown) the magic was gone. I wholeheartedly agree with other reviewers that THIS is the definitive live Thin Lizzy collection-- it is infinitely to be preferred to any later 'greatest hits' or 'live' compliations.

The original cassette/vinyl release was plagued by exquisitely bad mixing-- my copy sounded like the stereo effect was achieved only by someone panning the whole thing left-to-right ad infinitum (and ad nauseum; in headphones it was enough to make you dizzy and sick). The 'remastered' CD is supposedly better, albeit with probably too much studio 'fixing'. Listen to it for the songs and performances and don't expect too much stage-environment authenticity. If you have to have only ONE Thin Lizzy album, this is the one with their best done best.

'Is there anyone out there with a little Irish in them? Are there any of the ladies who'd like a little MORE Irish in them? Here's a tune called "Emerald".' --PL live.
Phil, we hardly knew ye!

5 out of 5 stars Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous.......2007-01-29

This item is great to have on CD... I've been wearing it out on my old 8 Track player. I was afraid that it might break. This item brings back so many great memories. It is one of the best tracks that I have ever heard (start to finish)...

5 out of 5 stars Great Singing, Great Songwriting - A Classic.......2001-04-24

This CD is a showcase for a great singer-songwriter. Many of the songs on this CD are highlights from her two earlier Hightone releases as well as a preview of songs on Highways and Honky Tonks (a future release at the time of the recording). In addition, Heather does cover a few older songs. Not only does Heather have a great Bakersfield sound; her songwriting has the intelligence of a Mary Chapin Carpenter. For someone looking for an introduction to a great performer, this CD serves as a greatest hits primer. Fortunately, there will be many more hits in the future.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous live document.......2007-02-01

I have a couple of Tosh shows live on CD; they are pretty tough to come by, at least in terms of concert bootlegs. I think I have one from '74, '78 and now this, which might be the best of the lot.

Tosh's Word, Sound and Power band must have been a helluva group to listen to live, and that comes across very well in this recording. Along the lines of a fellow reviewer, you really can almost see the herbsmoke wafting through the air and being pushed around by the fat thump of Robbie Shakespeare's bass.

The band feels very loose-but-tight on this record, as they skank through an instrumental intro and settle into the hypnotic groove of 'Igziabeher.' Using two lead guitars and two keyboards (unheard of at the time) allowed the band to enter a number of different moods when it suited them: full-on rock, with the guitars swirling around one another, heavy, heavy dub, with Robbie and the percussion taking over, as well as just plain old roots reggae, sending home Tosh's messages of African consciousness and equal rights as only one of the most powerful collections of musicians could.

I also enjoy this one because it's got some different songs than the usual Tosh set (you know, 'Legalize It,' 'Ketchy Shuby' ... they're great, but they're on EVERY live album). No 'Legalize It' here, and there is the addition of 'Mark of the Beast' and 'Babylon Queendom,' along with slower, more-psychedelic versions of my favorite Tosh anthems, 'Stepping Razor' and 'Burial.'

This one is crucial, crucial roots.

5 out of 5 stars Reggae at its best.......2005-03-06

Marley may hold the crown, but Peter Tosh was a king in his own right. Many have argued that Tosh represented the grittier, rougher side of the music, in contrast to Marley's more accessible sound, and this is not far from he truth. But Tosh had plenty of catchy melodies to offer as well.

As live documents go, you don't get any better than this: the sound makes you feel like you are really there in the club... you can almost smell ganja smoke coming out of your speakers! And the songs, a little slowed down from the studio versions, lose none of their vibrancy. In fact, some of them benefit from the slower, longer delivery.

As an overall aural picture of the reggae sound, this is a fantastic example for neophytes and devotees alike. It is also a phenomenal live recording of a rebel in his prime.

5 out of 5 stars Recognize this classic... audience with a prophet.......2004-03-04

First, the band. Word, Sound, and Power is the name and that's exactly what they bring. With Sly and Robbie as the best ryhthm section in reggae, 3 guitars, and 2 keyboards, the sound is so full and powerful that I struggle to find a comparison. The are technically magnificent and the simmering fury that they play with comes right through the speakers.
Next, the vocals. Do not believe they are inferior. Tosh is singing with emotion, conviction of his beliefs, and power. He is singing for an audience, not the studio, so the vocals won't be "perfect". Forget it. The pure power of the performance more than makes up for it.

A must buy for hardcore fans. A should buy for those interested in hearing great live music that will move you.

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs Performed By A Great Band.......2003-05-31

In my view, though Peter Tosh composed some great songs, they don't seem to be captured well enough on his studio recordings, even "Equal Rights". When I want to enjoy Tosh at his best, I turn to "Captured Live" and to this recording. Instrumentally, this is simply amazing- great songs performed by a great band. The only slighty weak point here is the vocals- Tosh's own vocals are quite good, but the backing vocals don't match the harmonies of the Wailers (before or after Tosh's departure).

5 out of 5 stars Peter Tosh the Great.......2002-01-30

This is a must have live cd. If you like live music you will love this cd!!!!! As you listen to the cd, you can imagine yourself in the concert. You can hear the crowd cheering in the background after the songs. This version of "whatcha gonna do" is the best version of that song I heard so far. This is a must have cd regardless if you like bob marley or peter tosh.

"Live" music sometimes disappoints. This recording featuring Bryan Lee captures an amazing amount of the joyful intensity of his actual stage presence. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Satisfyingly LIVE!.......2007-01-17

Great voice, songs, guitar and band--special kudos to Mark Katz on organ. This cd was my intro to Bryan Lee, and it told me everything I needed to know about Bryan Lee's music. He absolutely loves to play and is quite good at it. This remains one of my favorite live cds. Lots of energy, great change of pace, and all of this in front of a very appreciative crowd. Highly recommended indeed!

4 out of 5 stars Grossly under-estimated blues performer.......2005-10-16

I first saw Bryan Lee performing at the 2000 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and was left wondering why I hadn't heard of him before. He's obviously been around for a while and can play the blues in a unique style that's his own. I recommend any CD's of his and this latest one has him playing & singing even better than before.

2 out of 5 stars Bryan Lee, Live and Dangerous.......2005-07-02

Although I am a big Bryan Lee fan, this is not his best work. The "Friday Night" and "Saturday Night" as still his best live CD's.

4 out of 5 stars The Braille Blues Daddy!.......2005-05-26

I didn't really know Bryan Lee before this album. Amazon just kept his name in front of me till I gave in and bought it. I guess suggestive selling really does work. Born in Wisconsin, Lee lives in New Orleans and has recorded for the past 14 years. for a Montreal label. No one can say he doesn't get around. Recorded in Montreal, "Live and Dangerous" is a smokin set from a talented blues singer and guitarist who flew under my radar for far too long. By the way, I liked the album well enough to buy two more of his. Just thought you should know. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Funked Out Rock with a Touch of Majesty.......2007-03-16

Matthew Ward has one of the all-time great vocal instruments in any style of music. His pure and distinctly soulful sound is instantly recognizable. This album, released in 1986, was a personal landmark for me. Prior to this album, my view of the "Contemporary Christian" music scene was that it was well intentioned second rate artistry.

Here, the songwriting, the lyrical depth, and the vocal and instrumental virtuosity come together in a powerful, high energy musical statement. Matthew's vocal soar, Dan Huff plays a power guitar as only he can do, Lee Jones' bass work is VERY funky, and Jim Tenneboe's 80's period keyboard work is very tasty!

"Red and Yellow, Black and White" is a funky re-make based on the children's song of the same name, celebrating the ethnic diversity of God's people. "Armed and Dangerous", and "Put on the Armor" with their metaphorical references to warfare are based on Ephesians 6:10-18, where we are encouraged to "Put on the full armor of God.." so we can "stand firm..." in the faith. "Glory to God" is a majestic anthem to the God who rescues us in times of doubt and fear. "Love" is a passionate tear jerker for anyone who's ever had a child of their own to pray over. This is perhaps the biggest "hit" from this album, as Matthew prays for his daughter to someday see that "Love is calling out her name", just as his own mother once prayed over him. The chorus expresses the often forgotten Christian reversal of the world's principles, in the idea that "Love has the power to make the weakest man tower, to make the strongest man cower..." There is not a weak song on this album.

An altogether fantastic and overlooked recording. Definitely on my alltime top 100.

4 out of 5 stars Just the Theme Song, please........2001-06-22

This is a great albumn if you like 50's & 60's movie classics like Ben Hur, Exodus, Dr Zhivago and Laura. While the entire soundtrack from those movies would be enjoyed, sometimes you want just the main Theme Song. This is great encapsulation of the favorites from that time period.

4 out of 5 stars For fans only, but there is nothing wrong with that.......2005-09-14

After ten years together, Dangerous Toys released this (their first) live album in 1999. The full title is 'Vitamins and Crash Helmets Tour: Greatest Hits Live.' This disc is chock full of Dangerous Toys classics and some little-heard gems. Deadline Records, who doesn't have the greatest of reputations, did a truly outstanding job here. Hats off to the label and band for producing this compilation.

The liner notes and cover art are both great, both of which have come to be expected from Dangerous Toys over the years. It is explained where and when these tracks were recorded, which is a plus. These live recordings are taken from all over the place, between 1989 and 1995. For the most part, the tracks go in chronological order.

The track listing here is a good representation of the Dangerous Toys catalog and then some. You may find at least a couple songs that you had forgotten about. All four studio albums are represented with the bulk of the material being taken from the first two releases ('s/t' and 'Hellacious Acres'). It was nice to see two tracks each from the lesser known independent releases, 'Pissed' (1994) and 'R-Tist 4-Merly Known As Dangerous Toys' (1995). The song "Dangerous Toys", which closes the album is a previously unreleased track, done live, and serves as a nice treat for the diehard fan. Rumor has it that the song "Dangerous Toys", which had been lying around unused, was later adapted into the song "Demon Bell" for the 1989 movie soundtrack of 'Shocker.'

Soundwise, the recordings are a mixed bag. The later day recordings actually sound very good, but many of the earlier tracks don't have the same sound quality. Some of you may remember that this same live version of "Scared" (from Boston) was widely used on a nationally syndicated rock/metal radio show many years ago. Regardless of the sound, which delves into bootleg quality at times, the band sounds like a well-oiled machine and generally delivers with each and every song they perform. While I hate to do it, it is necessary to remove a star from the final score because this is from scattered shows and not one live set. It also doesn't help that some tracks were not mixed very well, not the fault of the band. The best way to listen to this album is on a stereo or some good headphones.

This isn't something that will serve as an introduction to the band. A new listener will want to start with one of the studio albums, preferably the self-titled debut. However, if you've already been a loyal member of the Dangerous Toys fanbase, you can't afford to pass this one up.

4 out of 5 stars Very good release of live Toys! A nice treat!.......2005-04-07

If you were there in the crowd (at the Back Room in Austin, Tx.)as many times as I was then this is music to your ears. I'm just now getting this and it's making a nice addition to my Toys collection. The first 7 songs are from the Boston show in Novemember 1989. Is this all from one tour? No, ofcourse not. The songs span all 4 albums from 1989 - 1995. Sound quality varies throughout. The track from the first 7 I enjoyed the most was Scared. That one felt the most like the good ol' days. They're not kidding about some songs sounding very 'bootleg'(Best of Friends for example). But it's still enjoyable and kind've like a mini-box set. And as time goes on the band seems to get more seasoned and polished (in a good way). Bootleg song or not you can tell they just kept getting better and better. Practice makes perfect. Overall, the album's quality is pretty good though.

Whether you're a fan who has some or all the studio stuff and just wants more or someone who's just getting into the band and want to check this out, you're going to be pleased. I do wish there were more songs from the 4th album :) Minor quibble. I think it's great that there's something from all 4 albums.

3 out of 5 stars Raw live album.......2004-03-15

This one is for the fans. I love it, but wouldn't recommend it to anyone but those who already love DT. This is like a collection of good quality bootlegs. Alot of good songs here. A back from the grave release. Let's hope the Toys will record again.

      3 out of 5 stars Live Toyz.......2000-06-22

Great cd, although I have always thought that they are never captured well live.

4 out of 5 stars Dangerous Toys Live - Rock-N-Raw.......2000-01-19

I am a big fan of Dangerous Toys since the release of their first album in 1989. I really enjoy their music because they seem to incorporate other styles of music that I like, for example Alice Cooper. This album includes the majority of their hits, but of course live. The live audio is raw and captures a true product of a live performance. There are no touch ups such as overdubs or what nots. The CD sleeve makes notes that the album is very raw and you get what you hear. The live recording song selections varies from approximately 1989 to 1996. I think they sound as good as any live band that I have ever heard because you get the rawness of the performance. I think they pulled off "Gimme No Lip" very well. Dangerous Toys stayed true to the recorded versions of the songs for the most part. All-in-all I think it is a kickin album that any Dangerous Toys fan would appreciate. Ckeck it out.
