Customer Reviews:
Look..... in...... the..... mirror!!!!!.......2005-08-22
I think of this record like I do the original records from the Misfits, raw, independent, wild and wonderful. You don't get this kind of thing from a record label and in fact the second dead horse record was much different.
I do think most people get past the poor production after the first lyrics "Look..... in...... the..... mirror!!!!!", even now I don't expect it to be so intense, so in your face and down right scary. On this album they were very serious about being fast, in fact much of the record was originally written at a slower speed and eventually sped up to a break-neck pace. In 1989 there were many other bands with super fast drummers yet Ronny Guyote's style is much different probably from lack of training but that's what makes it great. When the drums kick in to follow those first lyrics it sounds like shredding paper, imagine if you will Animal of the Muppets with 50 arms and somehow it wasn't overkill, the speed seems to make sense for these songs.
How many other thrash metal singers were compared to Jim Morrison or Kurt Cobian when reviewed in the Metal Press? Not even Metallica can claim that. Lyrically something brilliant was forming in this unsigned band from Houston. From religious remorse "Dear God Accept My Apology, I never believed in You, I only Believed in Me" to vague horror-core " I touched your lips, your eyes fell out, on to the floor behind the door". A brutal poet was born. Michael Haaga continues to write and perform with a new solo record, The Plus And Minus Show (already hailed as album of the year by The Houston Press 2005).
Other things that make this a unique and interesting record are tracks like "Hank" a tribute to the mythical Texan lifestyle. It's humor gives way to a blistering guitar solo from Greg Martin in the vain of early Slayer complete with out of key riffs that sound completely impossible, yet planned, it's really quite remarkable.
Performance, Performance, Performance... It could have been recorded on a jam box, when the performances are this good, when there is this much heart involved, the magic will shine through. But then again, it is a Thrash Metal record, dude!
Although I think it is out of print again, I'm certain this record will continue to find an audience, wherever there are people who appreciate loud, free spirited music.
die!
Sometimes the past is best left in the past........2001-04-10
I'd heard good things about Dead Horse, and was expecting more. You know how you grow up on certain records, and at the time you think they're the best ever, and then five years later you listen to them again and you think, "Huh. What was that all about?" That's this record. Average sound, average songs, weak '80s underground metal production. I can see digging it as a nostalgia trip, but it's hard to see anyone in 2001 really being blown away by this.
But Scottish Hell does kick.

one of the best texas bands ever.......1999-06-08
dead horse is one of the best live texas bands i've ever seen. if you caught on when they made their major label debeut with peaceful death then you have to get horsecore its classic. this was their first album aside from demos. the only place you could get this was at the shows and only on tape i think. be forewarned this album is raw but it f*ckin rocks!!!
Very great first album.......1999-06-02
I first got this back in 1991. At that time it was only available on cassette locally here in the state of Texas. I am very excited to see that this local band from Houston has finally got the recogintion that they deserve. This is an awesome album. The quality is not the best, but if you have heard any of their other stuff, this album is a must. I give it a VERY high rating. Songs like "HANK" and "Scottish Hell" will keep you in stiches.
