The unknown classic, now remastered.......2006-07-03
One of the greatest albums for kids and adults alike. It was written by Deep Purple bassist/composer Roger Glover. The songs are all wonderful and the remastered sound quality is top notch. Buy it now and your kid will thank you later.
80;s big hair? NOT HERE!.......2005-12-22
this is a fantastic album dawn and watch out for the bat are my favorites. dont look for heavy metalcovers of mott the hoople here just great music.
The Best Children's album you've probably never heard of........2004-11-08
This album was inspired by the picture book of the same name. The project to put music to this book was offered to Roger Glover (of Deep Purple fame) after Jon Lord (also of Deep Purple fame) turned it down. Roger Glover asked some of his musical friends as well as his girlfriend to participate. He even asked his replacement in Deep Purple, bass player Glen Hughes as well as the new Deep Purple vocalist David Coverdale to contribute. Ronnie James Dio and his piano playing partner Mickey Lee Soule from Elf (Deep Purple's opening act for many years) made contributions to six of the twenty songs. They helped cowrite Harlequin Hare and Together Again. Mickey Lee Soule sang on No Solution and Ronnie sang on Sitting in a Dream, Love is All (an intended Beatles rip off) and Homeward. Ronnie's singing on Sitting in a Dream is nothing short of breathtaking. His vocals on Homeward are almost Karen Carpenter like, they are astonishing. What's really funny about this album is that so many of the guys that participated on it became famous metalheads. Ronnie of course formed his own band Dio in the 80's, David Coverdale went on to form Whitesnake, Les Binks went on to become the drummer for Judas Priest in the late 70's, and Glen Hughes sang for Tony Iommi's solo project. The enhanced version of the CD has a video for Love is All. The video features Dio as a singing frog with a three string guitar! It is hysterical. There are other standouts on this album as well. Old Blind Mole, Aranea, Waiting, and Little Chalk Blue. This is a CD you and your family can treasure for years. You can also find the book that inspired the music on Amazon as well. And for the fanatic, there is a video of the actual concert (which includes everybody from the album except for Dio) that Roger Glover did to promote the album.
Bizarre genius.......2004-02-28
I discovered a cassette recording of this album in my parents' collection one day. I was baffled and transfixed. It makes earnest use of its singers in a variety of simple but beautiful musical styles. It was halfway through the tape that I started making a connection between it and a certain picture book I'd leafed through once years before... it was an amazing discovery to me that the two were indeed connected. Only a creative genius would think to make music out of a picture book about an animals' feast, and the quality shines through.
Wish they had released the animated musical........2003-11-17
Good album... 5 stars?I think not. Glen Hughes screaches too much as always. He hits the soul once in a while but misses too often. The Dio closing should have been more Elf or Rainbow oriented instead of Beatlesque.Worth getting for Jimmy Helms alone on Waiting.

Tantalizing tidbits.......2000-06-14
You may not love Paul Sperry's voice, but you gotta love his wide-ranging interests and his obvious joy in performing American music. Singers exploring the contemporary American art song will note numerous composers' dedications to this quirky tenor, and listening to his recordings, you quickly understand why. His interpretations go right to the heart of the matter, and proceed right over the top only when it's rigorously demanded in the music. Singers looking for new repertoire will also appreciate the extensive liner notes, in which Mr. Sperry explains where he found the songs.
The range of composers, beyond Billings and Bolcom to Weill and Weisgall, is maddening, giving a tantalizing taste of the diverse flavors of American song in the 20th century. The songs run the gamut of emotions, too, from Ben Weber's powerful 'Mourn, Mourn' to Cowell's sarcastic 'Who Wrote This Fiendish Rite of Spring?' to the loving memory of 'George.'
I highly recommend this accessible and communicative Sampler, and would also suggest that listeners try Mr. Sperry's more tightly focussed collection, Romantic American Songs.

1st solo album.......2001-02-17
Made in GER in 1995, Serial# REP-4567-WY, Playing Time 69:37
When the original version of this album came out (remember vinyl?), it had 19 tracks.
This CD version is NOT the one with the video of "Love Is All", but features 10 tracks not on the vinyl: track 17 "Little Chalk Blue", which features the great voice of John Lawton, who unfortunately does not appear anywhere in the credits, as well as a demo of "Love Is All" featuring many singers on the album each taking turns at singing a few lines, plus 8 alternate mixes of some tracks, some quite similar to the "original".
The music is festive, and bears no resemblance to Deep Purple's rock style. The melodies are simple, but the arrangements are quite original. The cast of singers and musicians is quite extensive (too long to mention here), making this album a pleasant diversion from the usual path involving Glover.
It's not really a solo album: it's an album written by Glover, with contributions from a lot of known people, and constitues my favorite one: completely different from his other albums outside of Deep Purple.
The music was intended as a project for an animated movie, which, to this date, was never made.
A stellar musical you`ve probably never heard.......2000-09-04
It`s safe to say you if you live in america you probably never heard this enchanting musical by Roger Glover (Bass player of Deep Purple). what you are missing are stellar perfomances by David Coverdale, Ronnie James Dio, and a who`s who list of british rock vocalists of the late seventies. While I am NOT a fan of whitesnake's David Coverdale, I had no idea this guy could actually sing! His baritone in "Behind the smile" totally steals the show. The same can be said of Ronnie James Dio, Whose vocals on "Sitting in a dream" literaly made me want to take vocal lessons. I could go on forever about great individual performances, but as a whole this album really stands the test of time. It is, however, at some points rather playful but bare in mind it was considered to be a musical for children (I consider it more of an alice in wonderland). If you are a fan of great rock music, musicals, deep purple, or even just the multi-talented Roger Glover, you owe it to yourself to check out this album. In one word..................MASTERPIECE
a must have.......1999-09-25
I have the vinyl. This is an alblum of all the creatures of the forest preparing for - attending - and going home from the "Butterfly Ball and the Grasshoppers feast. It is truly a tragedy that this alblum is no longer available. There is also an video for this alblum. If either becomes available please notify me.

Magical Musical Journey Into Fairytale Land!.......2002-04-07
If there is one word to describe this album, it is MAGICAL! The music and lyrics are woven together to create a musical journey into a magical fairytale land. The listener drifts away to another time and place, a place on animals and insects in the forests and meadows all preparing for the grand ball. Conceived, written, and directed by Roger Glover of Deep Purple fame, this is brilliant stuff. There are 20 short songs which flow together perfectly to tell the hopes, dreams, desires, and feelings of the various characters as they approach the grand event. One might think that on such a massive project with so many artists involved, that too many cooks might spoil the soup. This is definitely NOT the case. For example, each vocalist is perfectly suited to the type of song he/she is singing and to the character he/she represents. And althiugh numerous various instruments are employed, they are never employed so indulgently that they get in the way of each other or clutter up the total sound. The production quality is very good and for the most part the mix of instruments is just about right. This is a far cry from the hard rock of Deep Purple, but it is a refreshing change and definite "classic" that should find a comfortable home in anyone's CD collection, whether you are a fan of Barry Manilow or Led Zeppelin. (Do yourself a favor and shell get this enhanced version with the cartoon video you can view right through your computer - the artwork has an Alice-in-Wonderland quality and helps the listener visualize the images being portrayed by the music. The few extra bucks are well worth it!)

Take This for a Spin!.......2001-03-31
I got the some 25 years ago as an LP, and I have enjoyed listing to this ever since. This takes your through a very special day in the life of the woodland creatures, as indicated by the title of the songs. I am a bass singer and I especially enjoy singing along with the track "Old Blind Mole". I also enjoy the mental picture that is created when listing to the track "Homeward": it is about a couple of drunk salamanders. The songs were originally written to go along with a cartoon version of the book that the BBC put together. This is one of my top 10 albums; I could listen to the everyday and not tire of it.
Great replayable album.......2000-08-05
I don't have the video version, but these songs are great. I put this in my car CD changer 8 months ago and it's still there. I admit, I'm a Glover fan-- always liked "Mask" and his contributions to Purple and Rainbow. This collection is varied, from ballads like "Sitting on a Dream" (you won't recognize Dio on this one!) to the hard rock "Watch Out for the Bat." It's fun listening to the various vocalists, and Glover's lyrics are always a blast.
