Instant Meditation! .......2007-03-27

This cd is awesome! It is the first Ravi Shankar cd I've bought, and I was very happy with it. The first track starts out slow, and when the drums kick in it's like you are instantly transported into a deep meditative state. I'd highly recommend this cd for anyone interested in this genre of music!

All music is art. The feeling of this recording is one of happiness and playfulness. The interplay between sitar and tabla makes for an exciting listening experience. Truly a masterpiece by the master, Mr. Shankar and Mr. Rakha. Highly recommended for this genre.

Satisfying !.......2004-05-05

It is hard to select any particular CD from "The Ravi Shankar collection" so I've been buying all of them. Jogiya has a melancholic mood associated to it and is beatifully rendered here. One can find a lot of sad songs in Hindi movies based on this Raga.
While most of the Kauns' are among the heavier ragas this one (Madhu-Kauns) is exceptionally beautiful. Also, it is the most evenly paced recordings I've heard of this raga. It all happens in about 20 minutes! It starts with a slow, sad mood which keeps tugging at your heart. Once you are almost satisfied with the alaap, it gets into a medium paced momentum which gives a feeling of having a leisurely walk in a park with lots of little nooks with a variety of flowers. A little more that half way into the raga, it starts running, taking small flights at times, which give you brief flashes of even more beautiful scenes. One can feel the rhythm in the background, but the tabla is not playing yet ! Its an amazing feeling !
I usually stop at this point but to all the die-hard fans of tabla, there is still more. The last few minutes build up a dancing crescendo between the Sitar and the tablas which takes you to a climax.

P.S: Listen to it with no distractions, headphones preferred. Keep a cigarette ready just in case.

Incredible from every standpoint.......2000-07-19

The musicianship displayed by Ravi Shankar here is absolutely phenomenal! I am fairly new to the works of Shankar, this is only the 5th cd of his I've heard. By far though, it is the best. I am not 100% knowledgeble on the techniques and characteristics of Indian music yet as I am a novice, I am basing this review mostly on how the music makes me feel. The sound quality is incredibly crisp and life like; sounds just like it was recorded yesterday! Considering this was originally recorded in 1964 the sound here is very impressive, a very good remastering job! The liner notes are very informative, yet thankfully brief. They give a nice run down of ragas and so forth, in terminology that non-seasoned listeners like myself can comprehend. An excellent choice for the relatively low cost! I would definitely recommend this for newcomers to the wonderful world of sitar music.

I don't even own this cd but I can tell you all that the whole section of live tracks is from the very old and, according to the list here on Amazon, out of print(?) Talas - Live Speed on Ice. Now that its available for the first time since the mid-80's, I'm gonna buy it. Forget about being a Talas fan, just listen to the live stuff and you'll wander around your neighborhood stunned like you just smoked something bad!Only 4 stars given because of all the repeated tunes.

Yeah Buffalo's own Billy Sheehan. Boy can that guy make that bass sing, scream, and cry. He is definitely a bass player to admire. He even has captured guitar players. If you have only heard of Sheehan in Mr.Big, you have yet to taste the real deal. Check him out in TALAS and NIACIN, as well as his new solo. His in your face playing has given the spotlight to the once hidden bassist. So if you are a bass player come on out of the closet and Sink Your Teeth Into THIS!

High speed on ice is a great song. But if you want to hear the original version of shy boy (not David Lee Roths, or even Mr. Bigs version) here it is. If you are a bass player or a fan of raw edge rock with feel. Why have you not bought this c.d?

Sink Your Teeth Into This!.......1999-05-12

This CD was way cool. What an unbelievable trip back to the 80's to hear some real pioneers of rock. Hearing all the old tunes was just great and the performace was wonderful, you could even hear the guitar! I really wish these guys would stick together to give us some more Talas music. The set included both Talas releases and captures the essence of the original Talas. Dave Constatine's voice holds up nicely after all these years,the three part harmonies were great, Paul Vargas drumming was steady, and of course there's Billy.

The only thing missing was the long bass solo, but does Billy really need to do that to prove himself? No! He works his chops perfectly into the songs.

If you like 80's rock with the spirit of the 60's and 70's captured in it, Get This CD!

The Boys from Buffalo are back and better than ever........1998-12-24

It was a long time coming in making this CD. Fourteen years to be exact. That is how long it has been since Talas has performed together. The power-trio that once ruled the bar scene in Buffalo were hailed as superstars in the Western New York area. People came from near and far to catch a glimpse of the band which would soon become a Buffalo icon. Talas was always ready to give the people exactly what they wanted and the people loved it. Billy Sheehan (bass,vocals) soon became recognized for his ability to bend and mold the notes into his own style of playing. His "lead playing" technique soon gained him world-wide attention and eventually he left Talas to join David Lee Roth and from there he helped to form Mr. Big. Dave Constantino(guitar,vocals) and Paul Varga (drums,vocals) continued their musical quest in various projects. Rock 'n roll was in their soul and they couldn't resist the temptation to experiment with their own style of playing. There is an old saying that says, "You can always go home." And home is where they went. For one magical night, the boys got back together and we as listeners are fortunate enough to be able to relive what many of us thought would never ever happen again. A Talas reunion. Billy Sheehan's musical abilities seem endless. As producer of this CD he has been able to seize this moment in time and bring it straight to the listener. The music pours out of the speakers and takes on a life of it's own. Every note (and believe me, there are a lot of them) is captured and delivered in the manner in which it was intended, live and loud. And once again Talas gives the people what they want. Songs like "See Saw" and "Thick Head" from Talas' first album became regional favorites and quickly got added to the rotation of local radio stations. Their second release spawned such hits as "Sink Your Teeth Into That", "High Speed On Ice" and the song "Shy Boy" in it's original form. "Tell Me True" makes it's debut onto the CD. What makes this, and many other songs, so unique is the way Dave and Paul take turns singing the lead. In fact all three of the boys take on the role of lead singer as well as their respective instrument. The result is a blend of three part harmonies that will have you singing along in no time. While listening to King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man", you can't help but think, "How did they do that?" The trademark Billy Sheehan solo leads you into a cover of "Battle Scar" a well known favorite from the Canadian-based band Max Webster. It may have been fourteen years but you would never know it. These three talented musicians took on what may seem to many as an impossible task and have risen to the occasion. "If We Only Knew Then What We Know Now" surpasses any and all expectations and stands on it's own making it the best Talas CD so far. Many of us were lucky enough to see Talas in their heyday and we always knew then what we know now... Talas is the King of the World!

Sure, everyone knows Billy can play the bass. But take a listen to Dave and Paul. These guys can put 95% of todays players to shame. I just got a copy of the SHYBOY demo CD, (SHYBOY - the band, is Dave and Paul's current band) these guys can still play. If your ever in Buffalo catch thier show!

Humble beginnings..........2001-12-18

This CD can only scratch the surface of the shear POWER this band had! I was fortunate enough to grow up in upstate NY and witness these guys LIVE! I don't mean once or twice, I mean any weekend that they were playing in the area! I've collected original club(signed)posters,picks and other assorted stuff!I understand that the "live" energy can't be completely relayed through this CD but, if given the chance, this will grow on you! My own personal copy(on vinyl)has long since went to the big turn-table in the sky but,the CD is a MUST-HAVE whether your a Talas or SHEEHAN fan! In my opinion, the intensity of this band has NEVER been matched!!! If you've ever seen them, you'll know that this CD is NOT "sugar-coated" in any way!!!!!!!

Who was Talas?.......2000-12-01

Friend of mine called me on the horn and was all excited: he'd found "Talas" at a half price book store in the used CD rack. I never heard of a Talas. He told me, 'you think Mel Schacher (of Grand Funk Railroad) played a mean bass? You NEED to hear THIS!!'

Now I've held Mel and his buffalo f@rt bass as an idol for 25 years. He was an ex-banjo player of all things. Grand Funk was a power 3 piece band and two of them played lead, one of them on bass: Mel.

Finally I got "Talas". This album grows on you. First time I heard it reminded me of a second rate Night Ranger or something. The lyrics aren't that great, but that bass! I'll have to admit it, Mel could NEVER sustain the effort like Billy does! Now I'm on the hunt for more of Talas.

If you are into bass guitar, you ought to give this a listen. The sound clips on amazon don't give you any real idea of the bass riffs Billy pulls off (except the very last of 'She Don't Know' which fades out in the last seconds).

Sugar Coated - Pop Metal.......2000-02-10

This Cd is a real sleeper. Boring sugar coated pop metal with a lack of substance. A talas cd to get your hands on is "High Speed On Ice" for a better showcase of the talent this band could of had.

Talas: The Early Years.......1998-12-25

Talas was and still is the world's most underrated rock 'n roll band. Their live shows and state of the art lighting, in the late 70's and 80's, catapulted them into the local limelight creating a cult of die-hard Talas followers. The power-trio consisted of Billy Sheehan (bass, vocals), Paul Varga (drums, vocals) and Dave Constantino (guitar, vocals). Each member had conquered his instrument with expertise and soon became "gods" in the eyes of all local musicians. Talas had the abililty to take any cover song and make it their own. Their stage show was mesmerizing, their energy seemed limitless and when they played, they played loud. The louder, the better. Talas was a force to be reckoned with. They were unstoppable and untouchable. They left audiences stunned and amazed. Talas gradually introduced their own songs into the set list and before long they were recording what would be the first Talas album. It was to be the most eagerly awaited album of the year. Fans waited patiently for the release of the album (which has been conveniently remastered to CD) and the wait was well worth it. The album features songs written by every band member. Each member of Talas has the knack of focusing in on the melody, an art which some bands choose to ignore. The words and music prepare the listener for the ultimate hooks. Talas created their own style and sound. Dave Constantino's proficient guitar work let's him roll off riffs and leads that are reminiscent to the great guitar heroes. Paul Varga is an accomplished drummer who confronts his craft head on and whose sound is the blueprint for Talas. Billy Sheehan, the bass virtuoso, has gone on to become one of the world's most recognized players. Listeners overwhelmed local radio stations with calls requesting songs from the new album. "See Saw" was added to the station's play list and soon became an anthem for the band. Talas' popularity grew and local appearances resulted in long lines of fans each trying to experience the Talas phenomenon. Other songs like "Thick Head" and "My Little Girl" were requested nightly. Resurrection of Lou Gramm.......2006-10-08

It's tough to discover gems (of any kind) these days because there is so much out there! How did I come across this CD? Well, I live in a suburb of Rochester, NY and I was trying to find out whatever happened to Lou Gramm, no foreigner to anyone from Rochester, NY. As I journeyed through piles of bytes of information in the Internet, learning that he had had a brain surgery for a benign tumor in his brain, and how all that recovery had affected him vocally, and how the founder of his previous band parted ways with him due to differences in musical taste (bs!) I found Lou Gramm in one of the songs in this CD called "You're Never Alone". And Gramm is not alone in this CD, he is with another Rochesterean, Don Mancuso.

Great CD! Excellent lyrics. (Not all love songs..) Real world stuff. Great music and a unique sound. Sounds classic hard rock, but fresh. Lou proved he's still got it on this one for sure.
Phil Naro is awesome! And that drumer Joe Llama.. is incredible!!
Heard that Kivel records has abandon the artist and he's on his own. Typical of record companies. Stiff and run..

Great CD by Don featuring Lou Gramm & Phil Naro!.......2004-12-31

Very strong release by Rochester,NY. guitarist Don Mancuso. Most tracks written by Don & buddy Phil Naro (Talas,24K,solo),with Naro singing lead on majority of the tunes. Also features long-time associate & former bandmate(Black Sheep) Lou Gramm on several tracks. Gramm shines as well-great to hear him singing again! Overall, a disc chock full of very melodic,hard-edged rockers with Don's signature guitarwork in the forefront-very tasteful soloing as well.There's even a funky jazzed-up track with horns and a cover of one of my fav. Beatle songs-'Hey Bulldog' to round out the affair. Highly recommended!!
