Director Mark Pellington hewed close to journalist John A. Keel's unsettling account of a West Virginia town besieged by strange, paranormal events and found his efforts dubbed "The X-Files on Prozac" in some quarters. But as others have pointed out, otherworldly events often have a troubling habit of not adhering to Hollywood formula. Thankfully, the film's ambitious, double-CD soundtrack also breaks with convention. Disc 1 compiles tracks by Minnesota slowcore trio Low and Oregon's neo-psych King Black Acid into a hypnotic, almost seamless song collage of near Floyd-ian scale. It's a rewarding experiment that eschews musical histrionics for a mood-evoking axis of subtle dynamics and dreamy vocal intrigue. The second disc features the brooding score-proper of techno artists/sound designers/film scorers Tomandandy (Tom Hajdu and Andy Milburn), who further explore the same sample-rich, industrial-creepy atmospherics they did on Pellington's previous Arlington Road. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2006-04-10

Even though disc 1 is decent in it's own right it is the score provided by Tomandandy on Disc 2 that is the revelation. This is the most eerie and strange mix of sounds your ears will have probably heard. A perfect accompaniment to a great film.

4 out of 5 stars The Mothman Prophecies.......2004-05-20

Defenetly you are "in" for a surprise. I like both CD's. You can closed your eyes and be transported to another world.

3 out of 5 stars Too much music!.......2003-12-02

I love THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES movie. I have both DVD editions and I decided to buy the soundtrack because the music (and fantastic soundscape) were really effective. Well, two disks was overkill. They should have just released one CD with HALF LIGHT and the music from entire second disk. On the first disk, except for GREAT SPACES, I don't like any of the songs by KING BLACK ACID, which sound just too much like some PINK FLOYD wannabe. This is why I give this double CD only 3 stars. I give 5 BIG STARS for HALF LIGHT by Low & Tomandandy and the entire second CD. HALF LIGHT sounds like a song by that overlooked Brit band LUSH.

5 out of 5 stars Cohesive Scoring and Vocal Performances!.......2003-10-21

Having been a fan of the John A. Keel book since a child, I had anticipated the release of the film since I heard it was in production. The one thing I really didn't give much thought to (strangely, as I am a musician) was the music for the film. I have to admit that I didn't really notice much of the music upon the first viewing of the film. This is a good thing. The music is so woven into the narrative and visual content of the film that it all becomes one. Subsequent viewings of the film on DVD exposed the truly brilliant work of the musicians/composers of the work contained within this disc.

The first track and lead "single", "Half Light" by the indie outfit, Low, and score composers, tomandandy, set the mood for the rest of the disc. The song is hypnotic and etheral... and oddly beautiful. The song is reprised at the end of CD1 in a slightly longer mix.

The bulk of the material on CD1 is written and performed by King Black Acid. The name screams "thrashcore death metal" to me but is, instead, a band whose sound is akin to Portishead merged with Pink Floyd. The languid guitars, muted drums and atmospheric vibe of their songs just evokes "dark", "cold" and even "peaceful" to a certain degree. I don't know what the rest of their material sounds like but this is just amazing. Oh, there is one jarring moment during "One and Only" so be ready for it.

CD2 is comprised of various montages of tomandandy's score. I'd have to say that they are pretty much in the order in which they appear in the film. The score perfectly matches the vocal performances on CD1 in total mood. tomandandy score with this score! Some of the music reminds me of the music Mark Snow had written during his tenure with "The X-Files."

I don't feel that you actually need to see the film in order to appreciate the music on CD1. The performances are solid as are the songs. CD2 may have limited appeal but that is something you need to judge for yourself. Overall, you really can't go wrong with such a low-priced double disc set even if only one of the discs appeals to you. I just picked this up at Borders a couple nights ago and can't stop tuning in.

5 out of 5 stars The Creep who came in from the cold..........2003-09-19

This disc is awesome. Unlike most soundtracks, it can be listened to without any prior knowledge of the film. The music on disc one is very haunting while having some great rock feel. The second disc features the score by tomandandy. I just recently reviewed the last Midnight Syndicate CD and gave it a rather poor rating. The music on disc two is where they should be headed but they seem stuck inthis perpetual rut. If the guys in that band see my review on this album- PLEASE take note. The music is atmospheric and chilling. It is a little reminiscent of the the music produced for the X-Files but with a little more of an edge. tomandandy are a very underrated composing team. I wish they would get a little more credit as they can really convey mood and emotion very well in their scores.

Album Description

"Words like breathtaking, introspective, graceful, and powerful all describe their music aptly. It's for people who like their music to take them places, even within themselves, that they hadn't dared before. It's music to help you realize the beauty of a broken world around you." - INDIEWORKSHOP

"I still hear a band of ragtag improvisers, engaged in a heavy channeling of Americana that fuses Henry Flynt or Tony Conrad with the smoldering remains of Black Sabbath. Who can't dig that?" - DUSTED

At the start of 2005, Grails returned to the U.S. from a month-long European tour. Stepping off the plane, most of the band walked in one direction and the violinist strayed off in another. It ended up being the last time most anyone would see or talk to him again. A bandmate of five years had vanished, existing thereafter only in the form of vague rumors. As the varied reports of brief encounters and sightings grew stranger and darker, the band started a series of recordings called Black Tar Prophecies. The remaining members had particular dissatisfactions with how the band had been grouped into the innocuous, contemporary post-rock movement. This frustration, combined with newly liberated instrumental roles, introduced new possibilities for their sound.

In this way, the collected Black Tar Prophecies ends up being a more idiosyncratic mission statement for future Grails recordings, revealing their fondness for the groundfloor sixties and seventies experimental artists who saw music as a process of discovery as opposed to the pre-conceived, pre-parametered, commodified sport that underground music has become. A parallel is now forming between Grails and old-school experimental bands like Faust who, rejecting their past, started over from the beginning to build new languages in music.

Black Tar Prophecies is Grails' third full-length recording (and their first since leaving Neurosis label Neurot). Seven of the nine tracks were released in small, highly sought-after pressings of 12" vinyl on two European labels. Important is now proud to release Black Tar Prophecies in its complete form, including two tracks not available on the vinyl releases.

5 out of 5 stars I second this excellent review.......2007-02-24

Its got this improv feel that is absolutely addicting. I love this album-- feels like its directly out of a David Lynch film at times.

5 out of 5 stars Super gloomy rhythmscapes, jazzy piano, totally dubbed out drums, everything bathed in smoky atmospheric swirl.......2006-09-05

It maybe took a little while, but folks around here finally started digging the Grails, A LOT. After their last record, their second release on Neurot, the band went through some personnel shifts, which often trigger the end of a band, but in this case, pushed the band in new directions and resulted in some of their best music to date. That Neurot record was cool, but at the time I had sort of reached my post rock, quiet-loud-quiet saturation point. It wasn't that the Grails weren't a great band, it was because I had raised my bar on moody epic post rock. It was no longer enough to just drift along post-rockily before exploding into epic metallic bombast and drifting back again. As pleasant as that is to listen to, there was SO MUCH of that going around, I just needed something more. Soon after the band released an ep of international psych covers and that was the beginning of a glorious new direction. I knew whatever was gonna come next would be a killer, and thankfully, The Black Tar Prophecies, are indeed just that.

The whole three volumes thing was a bit confusing, and still is. Regardless, this is some, dark and amazing, absolutely beautiful music. With the Black Tar Prophecies, the Grails finally shrugged off their influences and forged their own sound, never hesitating to experiment, explore, or f-ck around with songs and sound. These musical 'Prophecies' just might just be the weirdest, most subtle, least rock set of songs they've ever produced. I was definitely always a fan, but when I heard that psych covers ep, on which they covered psychedelic songs from around the world, including faves Flower Travellin Band, well, I was suddenly WAY more than a fan. They had me at Flower Travellin Band.

Anyway, Black Tar Prophecies takes their obsession with psych rock, and their deft mastery of all things post rock, and turns them inward, into a darker, doomier, moodier place. And I love it. Super gloomy rhythmscapes, jazzy piano, totally dubbed out drums, everything bathed in smoky atmospheric swirl. Reminds me a little of Bohren & Der Club Of Gore at times. Songs that wander down dark alleys, streetlights barely illuminating the murky streets, sonic ghost towns, haunting cinematic postrockscapes, like a more rock DJ Shadow, all low slung bass and shuffling rhythms, very smoky and dreamlike. Elsewhere, dreamy psychedelic guitarscapes, strummed acoustic guitars, beneath fuzzed out moody psych leads, really seventies sounding, like a more abstract post rock Hendrix / Santana thing. But the doom inclined among you will find much to love too, here and there, thick slabs of glacial sound that will have dronedirgedoom nerds frothing at the mouth, as if to prove they can throw down with the big boys (Boris, Corrupted, Isis, Pelican, Moss, etc...) the band unleash massive downtuned dirges, thick washes of slow sludge guitars woven into tarpit riffs of gargantuan proportion, distortion so blown out it crumbles like dirt clods stuffed in your ears, the recording strangely lo-fi, giving the proceedings a dreary droney, Hawkwind meets Gore sort of dirgedoom vibe. Epic and amazing.

5 out of 5 stars THE CHILD DEVIANT.......2007-01-12

This album is a combination of all things dark and electronic. Some songs ..perhaps Future Pop..add EBM/Neo Industrial create new vibes for the intelligent dance scene...other songs wax creative and soothing. This is a "side" project of Daniel M., (creator of the far more recognized band Haujobb), and to be quite honest...this has become one of the best kept secrets in the non-MTV music subculture. The songs I think anybody who is inclined to this kind of style, 'SOUL ASYLUM', 'INTO THE DEEPEST DARK', and 'BULLET IN YOUR HEAD' make this album worth the price alone. If you own an IPOD thingy...you'll probably end up putting at least half of this album into your Top Rated. Excelent album!

5 out of 5 stars Best album of 2004.......2006-06-06

2004 was a fairly uneventful year for music. Destroid took care of that for me. This CD didn't leave my car stereo for a month and it still continues to be in regular rotation. Good ebm /industrial with some well placed samples. I rank it fith in my top ten CD's of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2006-01-27

Daniel Myer of Haujobb and Japanese electro extraordinare Yamazaki have come together to make this amazing album. If it had an exact category it would be industrial/ebm. I highly recommend it if you like skinny puppy, haujobb, frontline assembly, to name a few. They even sample HP LOVECRAFT!! The only problem i had was the whole christian goth overtone, like sampling the Excorcist. It sounds great though, just buy it, well worth the money.

            Product Description

Sheldon Tarsha, has undergone superhuman metamorphosis with his new album, Prophecies. He is now simply TARSHA, and at the risk of stroking his humble ego way out of proportion, I'd like to now refer to him as the 'Apocalyptic Messiah of Rock'. I just bought and heard the new CD through and through, and I have to say, I'm amazed! Album Art isn't dead but actually back! It's not only a great rocking album, but an album like in the days of the LP, that's more than surface deep, with conceptual unity and still plenty of room for interpretation. Prophecies is rapturous, virtuous, completely original, and sounds like Tarsha, the artist. Prophecies is cathartic, going from Dirty to "Generation-H, from original sin to exodus to a place of unity and harmony. This is what 's been missing all year--something epic, something about the human race from birth to death and all that's in-between, a story of biblical proportion from a unique and sincere perspective, speaking to individual hearts as well as addressing humanity at large. This album is so huge, so cult, it's classic. Overall, Prophecies is driven by contradicting desires for sex and purity, fantasy and truth, and a courageous call for peace, all delivered with a modern edge and unparalleled command by the most outstanding male rock voice of our time! Job well done! If you want something refreshing, skip the superficial, carbon copy, thoroughly played out scene, and buy Tarsha's new CD, Prophecies, and count your lucky stars for the long-awaited Second Coming. -Review By Sali Oguri

            4 out of 5 stars "Prophecies" does well, but . . ........2004-03-18

unfortunately not as good as the first. "Prophecies" is set up with the same style as "Magnificat," as far as the industrial/electronic backdrop sound. The vocals are still well portrayed, but with more than just the symphonic choral arrangements involved. I enjoyed the rap on "Magnificat," as it was a modern interpretation of what that chant might have sounded like written today. An interesting concept. But not as much ingenuity and purity is maintained by "Prophecies." The R&B twist on "Ave Maria" was not as appealing as the symphonic arrangements, and the versing in English instead of the original Latin is somewhat eerie. Altogether, the album as a whole is good, but I still prefer the first. I hope Industrial Monk has more planned projects in the future . . .

5 out of 5 stars More of the Same and Yet Different.......2003-07-01

This is a "sequel" to Magnificat (by Industrial Monk). I was afraid that having Prophecies from a different recording label (Magnificat was released by the prestigious Telarc label) that perhaps the quality would be diminished.
Actually, it has not. You can tell its the same guys, but they do several new ideas and spin-offs from their debut album. And it is as effective as ever. The last track sounds a bit spacey at first, but turns out good.

5 out of 5 stars Great mix of industrial and electronic.......2001-10-30

I just heard about this band from a friend of mine and had to find out more about this industrial meets electronic group (imagine throwing Nine Inch Nails, Lisa Gerrard, and Massive Attack into a musical blender). Industrial Monk is actually a duo that have incorporated the best of the old world with the technology of the new. One of the best things is the use of chanting chamber singers over the ambient electronic beats. My favorite tracks are "Vide Domine" and "Ave Maria" off of PROPHECIES and "Requiem" and the title track from MAGNIFICAT.

2 out of 5 stars This album is annoying.......2004-04-04

I bought this CD for two reasons. The first was because the Lead vocalist is a favorite of mine and the second was because of the price. The opening song builds you up and you expect to hear a great follow up to it but... The keyboards kick in. This album is boring and the keys are aggravating. I hate overuse of keyboards. So, for the price I guess I got what I payed for. Check out Firewind for something similiar but MUCH cleaner sounding and more creative.

3 out of 5 stars hm......... is it really that great?.......2004-02-02

I have not once thought this CD was that great. In my opinion, this is one of the weakest CDs in my collection...... I mean, among true metal. The opener is a fantastic song and ranks up with the best of the best. Like a Paradise is a wonderous ballad. The problem is the epic title track! This song is constantly building up to get fast, but doesn't ever!!! This song goes nowhere!!! I love that opener and the ballad is quite enjoyable, but the vocalist and lack of atmosphericness just turns me off. I don't like this guy from Firewind either. So its not just the music. Keyboards, when apparent, are more melodic than they should be. I don't know how such a sound gets created - these are great keys! But, they are few and far between as well as too strong for the music. The album is about an hour long, which also bugs me. I would be happy if the CD stopped before the title track.

Because of the singer, I once compared this band to Grave Digger. This is barely a melodic power metal band. Its almost full-blown power metal.

Here's another huge complaint. I have the hardest time liking Stratovarius's song "Will the Sun Rise" because it follows the hyper-speed (and hyper good, I might add) "Father Time". Upbeat songs die when following songs like this!!! On The Prophecies, we see the same problem again.

So do what you wish. This is just my opinion. I only love 2 songs (Eternity is very good, but not great) and would only recommend it to millionaires and those who like taking chances. Go look for Ivory Tower, Fairyland, Grave Digger, and Secret Sphere before this. Kenziner has a lot of maturing to do the way I see it.

When you get the time, go read some of my other reviews. I'm a little scared to ask you to say if this review helped you or not, but hey - everyone can think what they want. Don't forget that I LOVE European metal - I'm not some diehard American crap metal fan.

            4 out of 5 stars great album.......2000-08-09

This album was a good find actually. I enjoy the great keyboard work and the g-tar work is excellent as well. the vocals arent too bad but they take some time to getting used to. The thing that brings this album down are the ballads. The one, Trail of Tears is altogether bad, but the other two are not too shabby when it comes to ballads. The last track is incredible and is 10 minutes so your getting your moneys worth. The only reason why i gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because im comparing it to Blind Guardian and Rhapsody which reign over Kenziner.

4 out of 5 stars Get it for the great solos !.......2000-05-12

I would easily have given this album 5 stars if it weren't for the lousy vocalist ! Jarno, the finnish guitarist may have learnt a lot from the likes of Malmsteen and Chastain but in my oppinion has a clearer sound and he is no megalomaniac. The songwriting are so-so, the music is excellent. This is Heavy/Power metal and nothing else...
