One Wild Night? Well, that's not strictly true, as this live album was recorded at Bon Jovi concerts spanning three decades. But why be pedantic when the result is a live album that effectively doubles as a greatest-hits collection? Bon Jovi's songs are tailor-made for stadiums and arenas, and, from classic fist-in-the-air rockers ("Livin' on a Prayer," "Bad Medicine," "You Give Love a Bad Name," "Runaway") to lighters-in-the-air numbers ("Keep the Faith," "Wanted Dead or Alive," "Something to Believe In"), the choices are suitably larger than life. The career-reviving single "It's My Life" sounds right at home, as do great covers of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" (recorded, appropriately enough, in Johannesburg in 1995) and the Boomtown Rats' "I Don't Like Mondays" (performed with Sir Bob Geldof). --Robert Burrow

Live Concert Versions of Bon Jovi's Greatest Hits.......2007-01-19
"One Wild Night: Live 1985-2001" by Bon Jovi, Is a compilation of Bon Jovi's best songs, performed at various concert events from 1985 to 2001. For Bon Jovi fans, it's classic Bob Jovi and a Must Have! If you like music recorded from "Live" performances, You will love this album! If you prefer "Studio-Cut" versions, you may not like this album because it has the sound and feel of a live concert.
zero stars.......2005-11-13
One WEAK night!...zero stars if that was available. I never realized Bon Jovi was this bad a live band. They obviously get a LOT of production help in the studio because this album (several different concerts in several different venues) is ALL bad. Sorry for them and sorry for me for buying it.
Bon Jovi rocks.......2005-08-09
I found this CD to be extemely uplifting, great music to listen to while driving.
not a greatest hits album.......2005-05-14
This is not Bon Jovi's greatest hits, and that's the only bad thing that anyone who likes Bon Jovi can say about this. It's a fun collection of some live great live performances. Bon Jovi is great in concert, interacting with the crowd, and building up the energy and fun. You can hear that the audience and performers had a great time. If you like Bon Jovi, then this is certainly worth the money!

Just a year after their smash breakthrough debut album--itself still riding high in the charts--the Irish Tenors have added another delightfully varied collection to their discography. Live in Belfast again showcases the group's obvious concert charisma from a performance given in February 2000. It's a generous smorgasbord of medleys, traditional numbers, and songs from popular sources (including "Scorn Not His Simplicity," which Sinead O'Connor has interpreted)--mixing nostalgic sentimentality with selections of bittersweet melancholy. Binding the whole together is the unmistakable stylish charm of the Irish Tenors, whether singing in solos or in ensembles. But the biggest surprise for fans already hooked on the Tenors is the introduction of Finbar Wright as replacement for original member John McDermott. Wright's bright, romantic voice easily wins over a potentially skeptical crowd--especially in the dreamy "Isle of Innisfree"--and blends nicely with his colleagues. (McDermott, who had to bow out of the performance due to the death of his mother, makes a surprise appearance to solo in a memorable and touching "The Last Rose of Summer"--given as a tribute to his parents--and to rejoin the Tenors for "Red Is the Rose.") The arrangements by Tenors producer Frank McNamara are played with zest by the Orchestra Warsaw Sinfonia. --Tom May

Great Music and Outstanding Voices.......2007-03-28
My wife and I saw these tenors live and on stage and we were truly impressed. Their voices blend beautifully and they present a well rounded variety of songs. We so enjoyed the first CD that we bought this current one.
Time for a new one.......2001-10-19
I bought this CD, (plus the video) in July 2000 and listened to it so much I think it must be just about worn out.!!!The video I have seen so often I bet I have seen every idiosyncrasy of each of them. The Tenors are almost my total pastime. About 12 hours a day, listening and viewing. I "met" them July 22/00 and have been to four concerts, and I'm still impressed by the joyous sounds of their voices.
It's been a lomg time since I wrote my last review of this CD, but I hope I have helped to encourage others to enjoy the thrill of the most magnificent voices of their lives.

Wonderful music, wonderful voices.......2001-05-31
I do not claim to be a musical expert. It has always been my contention that music which makes the listener feel good, which raises the spirits and makes the heart glad, is worthy of being heard. Such is this CD. I don't listen to it to search for flaws, flubs, failings and screw-ups. I listen to it because it makes me happy. I am of Irish ancestry, and this wonderful music stirs a core deep within my soul. I got to hear some traditional Irish folk music I'd never heard before. I would hope that all those who listen to this CD would choose to enumerate its merits based on the fact that this music is meant to lighten the soul. It never was meant to be held up to intense scrutiny, because it is folk music. These are the songs the people sang. They weren't meant to be grand, classical opera, and should not be regarded or critiqued as such. They are beautiful and moving, just as they stand, and I am grateful that God gave these four men such voices to sing these old tunes and to preserve them for the generations to come. God knows we need positive, beautiful music now more than ever.
Professional on professionals.......2001-05-05
I am taking from the best in the world. I have met Pavarotti's teachers (Joan Doanerman and Joan Sutherland) and also take from them. I am very well-known in musical analyzing and teaching. I have read all reviews, and personally, many of you need to learn much more about proper vocal technique to be a critic. The voice must flow, with support (breath), low larynx, etc. All four tenors possess the proper singing qualities. However, stage presence, song interpretation, and musicianship also take into affect. Finbar Wright needs to continue his musicianship. He possesses much more romanticism than he shows. Also, anyone can say words like "texturing, spellbinding and dominance," and sound like a knowledgeable critic. However, these words are thrown into sports review as well. Face it folks, know what you are saying. John McDermott has a beautiful voice, but it is a much different classical style than many people know. John is a Celtic Tenor, which means that his under- and overtones will sound much different than the other three. The symphony is NOT too dominant, David Schierholz. If you have worked with the Met recording studios, than you can talk with me, because I have sat in on them. These are live performances, not takes in a studio. Folks, I am a born and bred Irishman. These men are great, but there needs to be more of there individual literature available. I would love to find Anthony Kearns classical recordings. Then, when you have studied and understand the nature of the voice and theatre, then you can write your reviews.
Tenners for Tenors.......2001-02-16
This cd and video was my introduction to the wonderful "Irish Tenors". Seperately each is spellbinding. Together they are nothing short of magical. Finbar Wright is a dashingly romantic figure while Ronan Tynan is most compelling. Anthony Kearns will be a major star someday in the opera world. His voice is clear and strong. Wright's voice soars in songs such as "Carrickfergus" and "Isle of Innisfree". He seems a bit nervous which is understandable given he had only 10 days to prepare for this concert. He was asked literally days before the performance to step in for John McDermott. Thank goodness he did! The one downer for me was the appearance of John McDermott as his voice is not my cup of tea.

In 1970, Jimi Hendrix returned to the country where he'd skyrocketed to fame and gave his first performances in almost two years when he headlined the Isle of Wight festival. Sadly, it was also to be his last major public appearance: less than three weeks later, he would be dead. Compiled from that performance (also available in its entirety as a limited-edition double disc), these recordings reveal a guitar legend in good humor, yet restlessly exploring the broader musical directions he'd just laid down on sessions for what would become First Rays of the New Rising Sun (initially released posthumously as The Cry of Love). Backed by Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and Band of Gypsys bassist Billy Cox, Hendrix ranges from the improvisatory cacophony of "Machine Gun" and a retooling of his standard blues workout "Red House" to renditions of "Dolly Dagger," "Freedom," and "Hey Baby" that trade on the more rhythmic R&B and jazz influences he'd diligently worked into his music. At times jagged, and straining the limitations of the trio format (Hendrix had publicly mused about working with a big band shortly before his death), it's nonetheless a passionate, intriguing clue as to Hendrix's true ambitions and potential beyond his initial hype and stardom. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
The End Was Near.......2006-09-30
A long time ago, a friend gave me this performance on VHS as a gift. And I like it, although it does leave a little to be desired. Of course, the CD would have better sound, and a DVD would have superior quality. So this will just be about the show as presented in the older format.
Before getting started, on The Who's "Thirty Years Of Maximun R&B" video, Pete Townshend spoke of this performance with mixed feelings. He was proud of The Who's Isle Of Wight performance, but commented on the condition Hendrix was in at the time. He said that as he walked onto the stage, he remembers looking at Hendrix, and thanking God that he was healthy. And if you pay attention to how Hendrix is acting on the stage, you can see he wasn't doing very well.
The sound is ragged throughout, but any live performance from that time, especially from an outdoor performance, will be such. And when the show starts, personally, I think it's awful. The band slowly picks up momentum, and by the time they are playing "All Along The Watchtower," it seems to smooth out a little, even though he forgets lyrics several times during the middle of the show. Watch his face, he is doing the exhausted, puffy-cheeks exhale, staggering around a little, and seems to be somewhere else while doing the show. This is a fractured, tortured performance, but he seems to still keep it going, and considering all that was going on, this is commendable.
He does show brilliance several times here, like when he starts to let his "Red House" solo take off. But, as Townshend said, "He was in such tragically bad condition, physically...," not like the performance he did the previous May, at Berkeley College, and even though this was loud and sloppy as well, he had some energy there, that is missing here. And what's with the gum chewing? Gum is one of those things that should have never been invented, it's bad enough seeing a cow chewing the cud, but on a person, it is the most unflattering thing there is. LOSE THE GUM, JIMI! YOU TOO, BILLY!
But you have to wonder what was going through his mind at this show, the previous four years were complete chaos; the British Invasion, the Summer Of Love, the riots at the Chicago Democratic Convention, Vietnam, the black eye given rock festivals at the Altamont Speedway, the pressure on him to continue blazing new trails, the marathon use of drugs, and the obvious toll it took on him, physically. Given all this, it's surprising he didn't just keel over on the stage that night. And even though he was alive and conscious, you still could call this his "deathbed" performance. At the end, he seems to be relieved that he could go somewhere, and crash.
If he would've just slowed down a little, who knows where he'd be today?
Hendrix lets loose.......2006-05-23
While there is SOME sloppy playing on this CD, it is a concert after all, and conditions were pretty poor from a technical standpoint from what I hear. Is spite of this, this contains some truly inspiring improvisation from the king of improv. If you are familiar with H only from radioplay, you are in for a treat, as Hendrix's genius as a live perfomer really shines forth on these tracks. Truly sounds like two guitars. Credit should also go to the band, who are totally in synch with H's playing. You can hear how Hendrix is getting real jazzy in his phrasing. God, what could have been.... My favorite track: Hey Baby.
Magical..........2006-05-08
As usual with any performer that flies by the seat of his pants when playing live (unlike most of today's acts which rehearse their sets and perform the same things in the same way night after night), Jimi is hot and cold. He's clearly frustrated with his playing and certain tunes are at times both brilliant and also a letdown at others. Machine Gun is one example. The beginning is probably the best rendition of this tune I've ever heard him play - even better than Band Of Gypsies. However, he gets frustrated, takes a break during a drum solo, and comes back playing it somewhat different and almost constipated. His tone, however, is just thick and moving.
If you're a Hendrix fan or not, any live recording of his is worth 5 stars. He's just so imaginary, experimental, full of soul and feel, and his sound is incredible. His hands move so freely on the guitar that it's just soul stirring. Definitely the greatest guitarist of all time...without peer.
One of the best Hendrix shows on CD.......2005-09-08
This show is great, Jimi plays some of the greatest licks and riffs ever played on a guitar. Freedom, Red House, Dolly Dagger, Foxy Lady, Message to Love, Easy Rider, and In From The Storm are the best tunes from the show. I highly recommend getting the 2-disc set of this show.
Not a good performance.......2004-07-12
I have always thought this concert was a downer and it still is after remastering, remixing and repackaging.
Was a sad way to see Jimi go.

One of His Worst Performances.......2006-06-10
There are so many other performances out there that merit putting on to CD. Hendrix is just not with it for this show. You are better off buying Live at the Fillmore East. I guess the "Isle of Wight" name carries some weight (The Who released a great Isle of Wight performance a few years back). The only other significance is that this is Hendrix' last major public performance, so there is the curiosity factor.

Not Jimi's best... (3.5 stars).......2004-08-03
While the Isle of Wight concert contains some great playing (as any Jimi Hendrix release does), it is not close to as good as some other Hendrix releases. I do not find myself listening to it very often at all, despite the fact that I am a big Hendrix fan. Certainly there are some enjoyable numbers (a rarely seen live Watchtower, newer songs like Dolly Dagger and Midnight Lightning) but overall Jimi seems somewhat sloppy and tired. I find myself wishing I only bought the single CD. I leave open the possibility that this album may grow on me, but for now I don't listen to it much.
One Of The Last Hendrix Concerts.......2004-05-08
The Isle Of Wight was one of the last Jimi Hendrix concerts before his death in Semptember 1970. Their were many other bands that night including The Who, and The Doors. Jimi Hendrix did many great things that night including his highlighted performence Machine Gun that seems to run on too long. Their are many of his known hits that were played including Purple Haze, and Foxy Lady. But their were also his latter songs that were really interesting to hear including Freedom, and Dolly Dagger. Hendrix was at the peek of his career he was on too much drugs.
Watching the Concert captures the intesity that was played that night. My favorites are LoverMan, All Along The Watchtower, and In From The Storm. Jimi Hendrix did some crazy blues solo's on songs like Red House wow. I still cant believe some of the great things hendrix was doing on the guitar during 1970. Blue Wild Angel is a great concert but not one of his best. I recomend this concert to a real Jimi Hendrix fan for the rest im leaving this one up to you enjoy!

Jimi Hendrix's performance at the Isle of Wight festival is definitely my favorite for many reasons. There's nothing about this performance I don't like. Hearing live versions of Ezy Ryder (Probably my favorite Hendrix track), Dolly Dagger, Freedom, In From The Storm, and Midnight Lightning are rare treats, considering they weren't performed too many times. First off, Dolly Dagger is great in studio form, and this live version makes it so much better, it's the best version any Hendrix fan will ever hear, and that's saying a lot. Freedom has such a cool riff, hearing it live only makes it better, this song should not be missed at all. Ezy Ryder is such a foot-stomping song live. And is performed at a faster pace. I can't get enough of Ezy Ryder from Isle of Wight. Midnight Lightning is such a rare spectacle to hear, it's a great blues track, and really flows from Jimi.
Machine Gun is mind-blowing. The guitar and drum solos in the jam section are excellent, this track, at first listen left me in a state of shock and awe, definitely his best version of Machine Gun ever performed. Another is Red House, this song is performed with amazing enthusiasm and ability the solos never fail to amaze me, in fact this song challenges the version on the Jimi Hendrix Experience Box Set (which is amazing as well) as the best performed. A final spectacular performance of a song by Jimi would be one of my favorite Hendrix tunes (especially live) Spanish Castle Magic. Jimi really jams on this version better than any other I have heard. His guitar sounds as if it's about to combust, and that's a great thing. One word to describe this version of Spanish Castle Magic. Electrifying.
Next are the songs performed by Hendrix performed plenty of times, and are never boring, but magnificent. Lover Man is performed with great enthusiasm and at a lightning pace which is great for this song. Hey Baby (New Rising Sun) was a staple of the 1970 tour and rightfully so, the song is incredible, really makes you think in the direction where Jimi was going. It's my favorite version performed live. And the proper arrangement of Message to Love is my favorite at this show as well, it's performed with such effort and charisma it can't be passed up.
Finally, are the old Hendrix classics that we all started out on (Hey Joe, Purple Haze, All Along The Watchtower, Foxey Lady, and Voodoo Child (Slight Return). I won't go into detail, but the version of Foxey Lady is the best and my favorite, All Along The Watchtower is great as well, Purple Haze and Hey Joe are always great, and this version of Voodoo Child (Slight Return), is amazing, I love this version it gets my fists in the air and my feet stomping on the ground. Electrifying.
It all ends with In From the Storm, this is a great way to end the show with a lot of power. This is my favorite Hendrix show ever and once you listen to this, you'll see why. This should be in your Henrix collection for it's power to amaze, excite, and astonish.

Drop dead gorgeous.......2005-07-04
Every now and then you get a CD come along where some really outstanding artist allows themself to just let their hair down for a moment. Of course it has to be done with aplomb and thorough good taste adding their unique touch of brilliance while sucessfully avoiding any hint of kitch. Russian Early Music pioneer Anatoly Grindenko here records songs from the time of Tsarist Russia. These are songs that transient political regimens would have tried to replace in the popular affection with political songs. Yet somehow these songs have survived in the hearts and affections of the Russian people and this peasant tradition of folk song that refused to die is presented with Grindenko's usual expertise and sung expertly with the utmost affection. In fact the songs were always sung by this choir for their own private fun but excluded from 'serious' concert performances. The quality of singing, as can be expected under Grindenko's expert choral direction, is superb througout. The end result is a lovely CD that can be highly recommended to anybody who just loves to listen to beautiful singing. After all the works of Tchaikovsky, Borodin and Stravinsky draw heavily on Russian folk song as a rich source of thematic material but any serious music lover would enjoy this CD just as much with its range of songs ranging from boisterous to charming to melancholy. Opus 111, as usual, provide expertly engineered sound to match. The end result is a drop dead gorgeous CD that will delight anyone lucky enough to discover this secret gem.
Brilliant !.......2001-12-26
This recording is a fantastic example of the russian choral tradition. Wonderful selections sung with obvious passion .The rousing patriotic tunes will make you want to march to the front, the romantic ballads will make you wish you never left and the songs of hearth and homeland will make you inch closer to your loved ones. If you have a passion for things "russian" this one just might keep you occupied for a while.

Customer Reviews:
Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

Remember Earl Wild...?.......2005-08-02
Sometimes it takes a while before a man becomes a legend. With the rebirth of appreciation for the "Romantic pianists" (pianists who took great liberties with scores when the composer was in the tradition of such changes in his lifetime - like Liszt, etc) comes a renewed appreciation for the piano mastery of Earl Wild. Somehow always under the shadow of his contemporaries such as Rubinstein, Horowitz, Serkin, et al, Wild had a strong following among a few orchestras and devoted recital attendees. But in his lifetime his popularity waned when he began emphasizing his own 'transcriptions'.
Well, now with the release of this never less than interesting CD the artistry of Earl Wild is bound to gain a new applauding audience. These pieces are his own transcriptions of well known works by composers such as Saint-Saens, Handel, Rachmaninov, Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Kreisler, and some of his own 'homages' to Faure and Poulenc. The playing is incandescently romantic: for sheer exhilaration of excitement these transcriptions are inimitable. The only other album to some close to this is Wild playing Liszt's transcriptions of operas!
This is a well-produced and very fun album for any mood. And it just may well be the kind of entry to the big works that young people need! Grady Harp, August 05
AMAZING!!!!!.......2000-09-06
As a pianist myself, I truly appreciated this cd. Wild is a genius! I especially loved "Reminiscenes of Snow White". I'm positively dying to get my hands on the score of it!!!! Very well done!!

Some of it barely sounds like polka.......2002-12-09
Some of the album has a definite polka sound, but a few tracks have such a heavy rock influence it doesn't barely sound like polka at all. "Come Back to Me" and "Pretty Dancing Girl" are examples, and two fine songs. The "Polka Medley" is great. I wish they would do some of those songs individually. Some of the record even sounds vaguely like ska music. I would highly recommend this to any younger listener of polka, and anyone who likes to dance polka. It may even appeal to some listeners of lighter core ska.
The future of modern polka music........1998-10-17
This is a fine example of a robust live performance by a superb, energetic modern polka band. Renditions of the High Bounce Polka and the Peanuts Polka are true classics in the fast tempo "Eastern Style" of polka. This collection could possibly be the best example in its appeal to the modern polka listener of the future.
