Best....Compilation.....Ever!!.......2004-01-01
The first disc starts of with Broken, recorded exclusively for this set, and perfectly sets the mood. It shows that you're in for metal in a way you've never quite heard before. Then, you get some tracks from the first two albums:Tatooed Millionaire, a live cut of Laughing in the Hiding Bush, and Tears of the Dragon. The first two songs mentioned get your head banging and your feet tapping. TOTD however, slows down and gives you pure music of epic dimensions. Now that your heart beat has slowed down, you're surprised with The Tower. This song has a great chorus, and really sounds like great heavy metal. The lyrics really stand out, sounding like a tarot card reading. Next, Bruce presents Born in 58 and Accident of Birth. These songs, while very good, do not stand out as much as the rest of the CD, which is a real shame. Time to pick up the pace with Silver Wings and Darkside of Aquarius. While the former song was written just for this set, a few years before DOA, these two songs really seem like a pair, with fast beats, catchy choruses, and the same kind of groove. Now, you get another epic song: Chemical Wedding. This song stands out with its excellent vocal delivery, and its ability to keep your blood pumping, even though it is a slow song. The next track, Back from the Edge, has got to be one of my favorites. I love the vocals. I love the chorus. I love how the guitars sound like they're being played underwater. For this song, it is IMPERATIVE that you have a high quality sound systems. The last 2 tracks, Road to Hell and Book of Thel(live) are the same deal as tracks 6 and 7. Good, but they don't really stand out as much.
The second disc is well worth the money, but my fingers are tiring, so I won't go into too much detail. The first track is Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter, the original cut. I personally think that this version is better than the Maiden version, but you may disagree. The other songs I really like are Wicker Man (not the Maiden song), Real World, Re-Entry, and I'm in a Band with and Italian Drummer. This disc also includes a track of Bruce talking about the second disc for about 15 minutes. Pretty cool.
The bottom line, you MUST BUY THIS ALBUM! It is a pure representation of heavy metal, nay, music in general, in it's greatest form. And make sure you get the two disc set. It's worth the extra money. Trust me.
Every bit as good as Maiden.......2003-11-03
The overall sound is in the same realm as Maiden, but it's harder, with a lot more variety and experimentation, which works very very well.
The 'Best of' disk has everything from one of my favorite ballads, 'Tears of the Dragon', to my favourite high-energy metal song, 'Silver Wings' (probably one of the best songs I've ever heard, comparable to 'Aces High', but with double-bass). And a load of awesome, distinct, metal songs in between.
The 'B-Sides' disk, though, is a real surprise, as it has just as many A+ tracks as the 'Best of' disk has. That 'Wicker Man' (a different song than the Iron Maiden one), 'Man of Sorrows', and 'No Way Out' have never been released as celebrated singles is beyond me. And the rest of the tracks show some true musical diversity, from some blues (Ballad of Mutt), a hilarious Zappa rip-off (In a Band with an Italian Drummer), medival-sounding acoustic song (Acoustic Song, Darkness be my Friend), the original version of 'Bring Your Daughter...' (which I prefer to the Maiden version), and 'Dracula', the first thing Bruce ever recorded (in 1977).
If you love Maiden, it's a similar sound and way better than the stuff they did in Bruce's absence. If you have the rest of Bruce's albums, it's worth it for the B-Sides and the two awesome new songs on the first disk ('Broken' and 'Silver Wings'). If you don't know Maiden or Bruce, shame on you, but pick up this album because it's a helluva lot better than anything you hear on the radio.

It's difficult to dislike Bruce Dickinson. He might be a platinum-selling rock star, but he's as confused and immature as the rest of us. He doesn't know why he's here, beyond loving music. He quit Iron Maiden and learned to fly because he felt he had to earn respect. He was locked into a cycle of self-mutilation. He recorded an album with legendary grunge producer Jack Endino. He had massive hits in South America. He nicked the guitarist from A Tribe of Gypsies and let go when he had to. He had three days to write a song to satisfy Mercury Records and all he had to go on was a cassette of Aerosmith's Rocks shoved under a hotel door. He was the perfect choice to write music for the Nightmare on Elm Street movie, but in the excitement of producing a No. 1 hit, the original version of "Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter" was suppressed. It's here, as the opening track on a bonus vault CD, alongside an impassioned live reading of "Jerusalem," and the excellent "I'm in a Band with an Italian Drummer" and a characteristically self-effacing interview. And, as far as the hits go, they're all here, from the brutal "Darkside of Aquarius" to "Accident of Birth" to the nostalgic "Born in '58." --Everett TrueCustomer Reviews:
Bruce is kick A$s.......2005-07-28
The best of, huh?.......2003-10-22
I know there are so many people out there that love Bruce's solo work, and I agree it is good. But due to maybe some mental deficiency on my part, I havent found his songs all that interesting. Maybe the lyrics are beyond me, but then I'm not really listening for them. The accompnying music on each song is great, and great to hear metal still sound like metal in the 90s, but I'm just not into his solo work, for some reason Maiden is where it's at for my tastes.
For Bruce alone, this CD is about as good as it gets for me, but it still falls horribly short. I thought I would at least enjoy a best of collection. Truth is my favourite song here is "Back From the Edge" that harmony in his voice is killer and makes for a good travelling song, I take it with me if I'm going out of town somewhere where there is open road, its great for that. "Accident of Birth" also finds the mark and maybe the heaviest track on this CD, though I may be mistaken. "The Tower" isn't half bad, so yes there are few decent songs making it a disc to get when you feel the need to buy something. I already own TATTOOED MILLIONAIRE so the two inclusions here are just simple reminders. Now I don't want you to think that because I liked the popish-metal of his first CD that that would be the reason I can't get into his later stuff, because really I only bought TATTOOED MILLIONAIRE for that specific track.
Anyway there isn't much for me here, if you want, join me over at the Iron Maiden section of the music store. Sorry Bruce, stick with Maiden. 5/13
Una Gran compilacion de un excelente vocalista.......2003-01-26
The best of the best........2001-11-20
I admire Bruce Dickinson. Best-known as the "air raid siren" vocalist of Iron Maiden, Bruce has spent a great deal of time on a solo career that has developed his growth as a singer and songwriter. Aside from that killer voice, he truly has a melodic instinct to die for. Him and guitarist/producer Roy Z. have grown into a powerful duo that commands respect from the entire metal community. What's more, Bruce's voice has only improved with age. He still possesses all his youthful intensity, but he now commands a larger range of expression.
This disc complies with a "Best of" collection's requisite purpose. Bruce's entire solo career is covered very well; the song selection is really great, well-ordered, with two awesome new tracks. Tattooed Millionaire, which was Bruce's first solo project, was more of a melodic hard rock album than a metal one; very unlike his work with Maiden. Both "Tattooed Millionaire" and "Born in '58" are polished hard rock numbers with good choruses you can latch onto and stomp your foot with.
Balls of Picasso was a more important step in Dickinson's career. Like Tattooed Millionaire, it was slick, pop-influenced hard rock/metal. A live cut of "Laughing in the Hiding Bush," with savage guitar licks and acerbic vocals, isn't that important an addition (good song, though). What matters here is "Tears of the Dragon," which remains to this day one of Bruce's best songs. It maintains a Maiden aesthetic, and yet the sheer passion, coupled with the monumental soloing, put it on another level entirely. Some have interpreted the song as a repudiation of Maiden, but it is nothing that indignant. It is about being afraid, and the challenge of conquering your fear.
Skunkworks is the dark horse of Bruce's work. I've only actually picked up this album recently, and I must say it's better than I thought it would be. Again, hard rock/metal, but with touches of experimentation. The album is represented by the solid, lone single, "Back from the Edge." Delicious guitar patterns and mighty vocals characterize this one.
With Accident of Birth, Bruce returned to his heavy metal roots, melding musical intensity and crystal-clear recording quality. It was commercially successful, and the songwriting is at peak of its craft. "Road to Hell" and its harmonized, razor-sharp precise guitars has hooks even a metal-hater would find hard to resist. "Accident of Birth" is heavier and darker in tone, with hammering metallic power and no lapse on the melodic factor. "Darkside of Aquarius" is ambitious with layers of aggressive riffing and a gripping, melodic finale. I wish they'd included the awesome "Omega," which is one of Bruce's finest tunes. After all, there is 15 minutes of space left on the CD! "Man of Sorrows," the powerful single, is also missing.
The Chemical Wedding was Bruce's crowning achievement. It was a lyrically complex concept work based on the poetry of William Blake, coupled with fierce songwriting and crippling guitars. The riff-monster "Book of Thel" is represented with a live track from a South American concert. Growling riffs, bloodthirsty vocals, and enthusiastic crowd noise make an awesome song better. "The Tower," a groovier, more melodic song, is irresistible metal. "Chemical Wedding" is slow and growling. Just one question...where the heck is "Trumpets of Jericho"?
There is a pair of non-album tracks as well, and they're incredible! "Silver Wings" is soaring, melodic, and heavy, with slammin' double-bass drums driving the chorus. "Broken" is mid-tempo and heavy, with guitar atmospherics that wouldn't seem out of place on The Chemical Wedding (although the lyrics wouldn't fit!).
SINGLE DISC If you're new to Bruce Dickinson's solo career, this compilation is a pretty good entry point. Although you might just want to get both Accident of Birth and The Chemical Wedding, Bruce's "Best of" is a good, single-CD choice.
