Another great CD-this one has some songs that are a little too "technoie" for my taste for dance class or choreography. But great for general use. Very happy with my purchase.

I just had to share with everyone this CD I got today (yes, some people still DO actually buy CD's...LOL!). OH-MY-GOD!!! It is rockinnnnnnnn' da house! You see me? I bought 3 CD's, today to feed my soul. The others are good, but this one makes my heart feel like it's gonna fly out my body! Oh my God, I put it in the CD player in my car, and I just cannot stop moving! I'm thinking of all kind of belly dance moves to do... but more importantly, it just sounds like my heartbeat, man. I just can't explain it more than that. It's sooooooooo funky!!!

Music, no matter what kind (if it is the kind you like), speaks to the soul. It is as if the music becomes the language your soul and spirit speaks... and it is the rhythm of your heartbeat. When something speaks so specifically, it as if I become my total self again. Such joy, reminds me of who I really am! I wonder if others feel this way. Gotta be.
Now, my top 5 favorite kind of music go exactly in this order:
1. Belly dance music
2. Bhangra & Chutney Soca
3. Salsa & Merengue
4. Zydeco
5.Soca
6. Reggaeton
7. Ghazals
(If you don't know the meaning of any of these terms, you can look it/them up. It'd take too long to explain )
I mean, of course I like more, but these musics would "turn me on", if you will. It is directly related to the dance moves induced as well. But more importantly, I think it is about an aural aesthetic; what one finds beautiful. I do believe it is also much related to one's ethnicity and perhaps cultural memories -- from this life, and perhaps ancestral memories, or even those memories from the collective unconscious. As I said, in the case of Turbo Tabla, it feels like someone whispering in your ear in only a language you can understand... speaking right into your brain. It sounds just as sweet as hearing your own name whispered in your ear. They say a person's name is the sweetest ever word-sound to them. (So fellas, if you don't already know... if a way to a man's heart is through his belly, then surely a way to some women's hearts, is through her ear.) Total erotica! The biggest sex organ is between the ears, yes? It all starts in the brain.
But, I digress. LOL!
I have a question for you all. Do you think one's ethnicity or ethnicities (in the case of us "mixed" folk -- and lots of us are, inevitably... even if we think we are purely one thing or another... but that is yet another tributary of discussion)... does one's ethnicity influence the way a person looks at the world aesthetically? Is what one finds beautiful, influenced by one's background(s). I believe that it is. I'd like to hear what someone else thinks. Now, I'm not speaking of aesthetics on the surface -- and that may sound like an oxymoron, yet it is not. I am referring to those things which appeal to you at a more gut level; an instinctual level. Some people may believe that that the business of what one finds beautiful or appealing, through the senses, a shallow business. I beg to differ.
I think what one choses to wear -- clothes, jewelry, adornment... how you wear your hair... how one choses to decorate one's environment... the kinds of food & music one likes... certainly to whom one is attracted... our interests... environments that makes one feel at home...fabrics... colors... scents we wear... scents we have around us... what music we like to hear... what languages sound sweet in our ears...all are influenced by our ancestral memories. These are the things which make us feel at home, cared for.... which make us love and feel loved... which makes our hearts feel more alive... which makes our souls soar... which touch us in places we never knew existed or had forgotten........ yes, I think these things aour a part of our collective unconscious.

Nonethless, for moments today, I felt like I could fly :-)

Excellent Original Performance Music!.......2006-06-15

This is original middle eastern music that will get your performance noticed! I am the amateur Bellydancer USA 2006 winner and I danced to Turbo Tabla II when I won. It goes great with Raks Sharki as well as sword, zils, or even veil work. This cd is a must have for any serious bellydancer's music collection. It will make your performance memorable. Shimmy-on.

There are better CDs out there.......2006-06-03

The quality of the sound is not as good as most CDs. At times the vocals are not crisp and sound muffled. It is also somewhat boring, since it has a very repetitive feel to it. For bellydancing, this CD does not inspire me and it usually does not take much to get me going.

"Turbo Tabla 3" is ok, but this track is also on "Bellydance Superstars, Vol. II", which is a lot better investment.

the album is spiritual acoustic karma sutra. i loved the bass beats fusion with the instruments of old. this album has me wanting more. in the menatime i now want to go a eatery with this music and see real bellydancing.

Judas Priest goes softer, but still rocks.......2007-06-05

I remember when the "Turbo Lover" video first aired on MTV. I liked the little skeletons and the British girl with the big beautiful bouncy butt as she chased a rolling motorcycle tire. I thought the song was good and I thought Glenn had a cool flamethrower on his guitar.

Locked In, Parental Guidance, and Private Property were the other singles off the album, Locked probably being the most well known, and heaviest. The other two were a softer and OBVIOUSLY looking for radio airplay. Out in the Cold is a great tune, I would call it a lost classic.

I think my favorite song on the album is 'Rock you all Around the World'. It's just a great tune to drive to and has a great sing a long chorus. It's just a song to unite all Priest and metal fans.

Among history's most underrated albums.......2007-04-12

Released in the era of thrash and just after Defenders of the Faith, this album ended up not being truly accepted by Priest's most ardent fans. But after all these years, it is just stupid not to give this album the decent listen it deserves. It is just as good as any other classic album these guys have released! This album is certainly not devoid of gems: Lavish "Turbo Lover", catchy "Locked In", bravado "Rock You All Around the World" and fast "Reckless" stand out as the best songs, I would say. Many still label these songs - and the others - rubbish because of the use of synthesized guitars by Glenn and K.K., but in fact it adds an interesting feel to the overall result. Judas Priest's trio of composers have never been afraid of trying new things, and they were responsible for the expansion of the metal bondaries. As for being a more commercial album, this is just not true - Screaming for Vengeance, which is an espectacular disc, is more commercial than Turbo.

Many will still say this album sucks, but pay these guys no heed and listen to Turbo with an open mind - you won't regret it.

weak, but the good is great.......2007-04-11

Even though it's understandable that Priest fans would hate this album, because after all it IS a softer and more commercial album, there are three fantastic songs on this bad boy. Those would be "turbo lover" "locked in" and "reckless". VERY melodic and good songs. The rest of the album has some above average bits here and there, but mostly forgettable.

I have to admire this album because it takes me back to my childhood in the mid 80's. The loud guitars remind me of my parents driving me around on back roads back then. Sometimes memories can help improve an albums quality. Also, to the albums defense, it's STILL quite heavy.

Better than you think.......2007-03-24

Turbo has to be one of the most unjustly maligned metal albums of all time. Listening to everyone complain, you'd think the band suddenly became Bon Jovi overnight. No, Turbo is not the same kind of metal album that British Steel was, but when you look at it objectively, it's not that far removed either.

The fact is; Turbo flat-out rocks! Yes, they added synthesizers, but I'd argue that they definitely didn't abuse them. Yes, there are a couple of goofier songs obviously meant to be "hits", but can you honestly tell me a song like "Parental Guidance" is that much different than "Breaking the Law"? This is an album with plenty of songs I would call "essential" Priest tracks, including "Turbo Lover", "Locked In", "Out in the Cold", hell, pretty much the whole second half of the album! Turbo doesn't have any more filler tracks than any other Priest album from that era.

Call it a sellout attempt if you will, but I find it amusing that Painkiller, the band's transparent attempt to "un-sellout" by giving people exactly what they wanted, is so highly regarded while their attempt to try something a bit different is so hated. Truth be told, I find myself playing Turbo a hell of a lot more often than any other Judas Priest album released after 1985.

Bottom Line: If you ignore the conventional wisdom about Turbo and listen to it on its own merits, I think you'll find it to be a perfectly worthy entry in the Judas Priest saga.

NOTE: The 2001 reissue of Turbo features much-needed digitally remastered sound as well as a pair of bonus tracks, a studio track called "All Fired Up", which is well worth checking out, and a live version of "Locked In."

In baroque opera, the spotlight was usually reserved for the bravura arias, designed to show off the singers' brilliant coloratura and skill in improvising ornamentation. The ensembles, on the other hand, were left to languish in the shadows. This record aims to right that wrong in a program of 17 duets drawn from 13 mostly unfamiliar Handel operas. In an attempt to create some cohesion, these primarily short selections are arranged under the heading "Love and Jealousy," with love predominating and usually prevailing. If the title sounds a bit gimmicky, never mind: the music's the thing and it is wonderful. Expressed with Handel's inimitable dramatic intensity and deeply felt inwardness, it encompasses every amorous emotion from tenderness, ardent protestation and rapturous joy to fear of loss, anguish and mournful farewell, using an infinite variety of form, texture and character. Some duets begin with a recitative; the voices separate and unite, conversing, interweaving, joining in imitation or harmony. The orchestra, a period-instrument group of soloists, provides introductions, interludes and postludes which set mood and atmosphere and contribute greatly to contrast and diversity. The performances are splendid. The two singers prove that the duet is as fertile a vehicle for virtuosic display as any aria, and they find plenty of opportunities for ornamentation in the da capos. Their voices can blend and merge as well as remain distinctly individual in timbre and color, and they succeed in creating, or at least suggesting, situations and personalities even in the shortest selections. The playing is impeccable: rhythmically crisp and pungent, texturally transparent, and very expressive. The only cavil is that the selections often follow each other without a pause, making it difficult to be sure where one ends and the next begins. --Edith Eisler

Stellar Singing.......2007-01-04

I must admit that, before becoming a dedicated Joyce DiDonato fan, I probably wouldn't have purchased a CD of Handel duets, or any Baroque duets for that matter. Like other reviewers have observed, the duets are performed out of dramatic context. I also prefer the full opera, particularly when it comes to Handel.

In the case of this CD, who cares? This is literally some of the loveliest Baroque ensemble singing I have ever heard. The pairing of Joyce DiDonato with Patrizia Ciofi was a stroke of brilliance. Their voices match perfectly. Their intonation is spot on, all the time. Their ornamentations, particularly the da capo ornamentations, are intelligently selected and brilliantly executed. The balance is just right between the singers and the chamber musicians.

I have a big thanks to give to Virgin Veritas and these two wonderful artists for this CD. It will get lots of play in my home.

Highly recommended.

Handel was a master of his medium - his music paints with elegance and soul-stirring emotion upon the canvas of the human heart. His duets often exhibit particular indebtedness to Steffani (truly a genius of duet writing), and they are gorgeous duets indeed!

I note that some other reviewers quibble with a) duets only on this recording; and b) a sense of disjointedness.

Addressing both of those issues, let's admit that any recital disc is going to give some disjointedness in the absolute and literal sense. To take a portion of an opera out of its setting and perform it separately is a sort of amputation, be it an album of arias OR an album of duets. Should singers then avoid putting out solo recordings of Handel arias? I find no reason to come to THAT conclusion - and for the same reason, I have no quarrel at all with the recording of an album of Handel duets.

Of course, to enjoy Handel to the fullest degree, do get full recordings as well... but even in Handel's time, singers would pull specific bits of their roles out of context, perform them separately... so it's a time-honoured practice! Let us simply enjoy the high standard of the music without worrying about context in any recording of arias, duets, trios, or operatic scenes.

Handel's duets vary so much in their shape, melodies, harmonies, rhythms - there's plenty of variety. It comes down to a question of the singers involved having suitable voices, singing appropriately for the style, the playing of the orchestra, and the particular variety of duets chosen.

On all points, this album scores highly! Both Ms Ciofi and Ms Di Donato have beautiful voices, clearly trained in baroque singing, and they have equally clearly put in a lot of work to achieve a lovely blend and similar approach within these duets. What a joy to hear gifted singers perform these duets with such intelligence, emotional involvement and lovely, lovely tone!

This recording is a favourite of mine - not just because I perform many of the duets on this CD with another soprano, but because I am genuinely delighted to hear appropriately performed Handel singing in a duet album. I've found fault with some other duet albums because I consider them under-rehearsed, insufficiently blended, and inappropriately embellished - but this album shows none of those faults, and I am very happy to recommend it highly and without reservation. Beautiful singing, beautiful works - you can scarcely wish for more!

Supreme Handel Duets Lack Dramatic Context But Still Lovely.......2005-01-08

I was fortunate to see and hear Renée Fleming and the astounding David Daniels sing "Io t'abbraccio" together in the magnificent Stephen Wadsworth production of Handel's "Rodelinda" at the Metropolitan Opera last week. There is nothing here that can match the ethereal quality and overwhelming melancholy of that duet performance, but sometimes this recording comes pretty close under the masterful baton of Alan Curtis. Soprano Patrizia Ciofi and mezzo-soprano Joyce Di Donato blend quite well together with Ciofi's often fiery coloratura floating easily over the verses and Di Donato's contrasting darker, fuller tone.

It's a nice idea to make a disc of just Handel duets but also a bit risky since they usually represent the major dramatic highpoints of his operas, mostly coming at the end of an act or of the entire opera. Given that fact, one would think there would be plenty of exhausting dramatic fireworks by providing one duet after another. In fact, the higher profile duets, such as the aforementioned "Io t'abbraccio" and the equally famous "Scherzano sul tup volto" from "Rinaldo", feel a bit lackluster probably because their gorgeous music crowns the end of scenes full of tension and drama. The joy in hearing two characters sing together, especially after hearing each of them express their individual sentiments, acts as a catharsis. But here the duets become lovely moments partially robbed of their dramatic impact because the organic synthesis of character and music is lost. Certainly it's not easy to deliver a recital containing only music that Handel devised for key dramatic moments. Yet, it more often does work here perhaps because there are a treasure trove of little-known gems such as "Caro, tu m'accendi" from "Faramondo", "Se mai turbo il tuo riposo" from "Poro" and "Alma mia, dolce ristoro" from "Admeto". The performances really become more like chamber music pieces, almost understated and always tasteful. Toward that end, the singing is expressive and stylish as Ciofi and Di Donato play lovers who quarrel and console in these duets. Together they bring this recording to a consistently high level regardless of the dramatic shortcomings, and their emotional availability makes their unified voices all the more resonant as they get lost in each other.

A feast .......2004-09-28

The programme maybe disjointed, but it doesn't matter, because the singing is some of the most glorious I have EVER heard. A shining feast of articulation, phrasings and harmonies, heavenly executed by Ms Ciofi and Ms Di Donato.

Just buy it for an unparalleled vocal chord experience; marvel at the singing. Any other considerations are entirely oblivious.

A sumptuous feast of Handel.......2004-08-04

Alan Curtis has here chosen to bring to life some of the more memorable duets of Handel's many operas. Quite apart from chewing over some of the more well-known operas he has chosen some duets from Silla, Sosarme (Per le porte del tormento), Faramondo, Atalanta, Poro and Muzio Scevola, few of which have had decent recordings in the last number of years.

His band is small, one player per part, withe the resultant effect rather to make the duets seems like chamber music. There is a danger in that with duets such as Io t'abbraccio (end of Act 2 Rodelinda) taken out of context that the dramatic moment of the music would be lost. However, by arranging the duets in a sequence (as Curtis writes in the notes) from love's joy through self-doubt and jealousy, back to undying love, the duets out of context sound superb.

Both singers, Patrizia Ciofi (Soprano) and Joyce di Donato (Mezzo) sound thoroughly at home in the idiom of baroque opera, and in fact their cadenzas and ornamentation are delightfully understated, rather than the sort of shrieking 'I can go higher still' of some more lauded performers. I look forward to Curtis' forthcoming recordings of Lotario, Rodelinda and Radamisto, if these performers are to be retained.

In short this is a delightful enterprise showing the genious of Handel in dealing with the most basic of human emotions - love and jealousy. Well done Alan Curtis!

I admit. Wait, we can all admit.. we've all watched the Power Rangers before. In my case, I was addicted but that is another story. When I was little, this used to be the music we'd 'jam,' to. At any rate - Now when I listen to this CD, the music is a bit tasteless and it wouldn't be an everyday album you'd pop in and listen to. All in all, you have to listen to it for about 4 years inorder to chew it all up. In that case - you'll enjoy it much more.

I used to be the biggest fan of the Power rangers, and now I am very annoyed by them, but I really like this soundtrack. It was very good, and even if you HATE the power rangers, I suggest you get this.

Not all ska, but still great.......2003-11-06

As my title implies, the Pietasters took another different direction here, continuing their streak of completely unique albums. This is neither the pure neo-trad ska of Oolooloo (an even better album-- get that too), nor the mainstream late 90s sounds of Willis. It has a great 70s R&B/soul feel with some definite reggae influences (Mellow Mood, Drunken Master, How We Were Before). The best songs are Malmo, Rachel (possibly my favorite Pietasters song ever), Set Me Up, and Nothing Good to Eat (although the Give em the Boot III version sounds much better.)

In short, highly recommended for fans of all music from soul and old-school R&B to reggae and ska. But for the best Pietasters records, get Oolooloo and Strapped Live.

The absolute best yet.......2002-10-18

I assure all unfamiliar listeners that this CD is absolutely worth every penny you pay for it. Stunning sounds, strong brass, penetrating drum beats...it unbeatable. Keep reggae ska alive and pass this little known secret on: everyone should taste the pie. These guys are great musicians and great guys. They deserve to earn some cash.

movin on up.......2002-08-08

I have been a fan of the Pietasters for sometime and think it is great to see them evolve musically. This album picks up where Awesome Mix left off very well. Steve "I Feel Good" Jackson is soulfully heard through most of these jams. The rest of the band is at their best and man, can you hear the basslines flow! IF YOU HAVEN'T TRIED THE PIE, THAN IT'S TIME TO TASTE A PIECE!

But to see them live is to really experience the full Pietaster madness! Don't be afraid - just buy it!

If the Pietasters come to your town, be there. . .you will have a blast.

They did it again!.......2002-08-07

Every true Pietasters fan expected it, with every album their amazing sound evolves significantly as of the last album, THIS IS NOT A BAD THING! I knew it would happen. They are still the most talented, soulful, swinging ska band around! I admit I am horribly biast with this album. I loved all their other albums so much that they could fart in a microphone and I would buy the single. But this album holds its own! It seems to be a look back at the roots of the pietasters yet with a fresh perspective that will rock you. Don't expect any songs on the album similar to crazy monkey woman on willis (which was awsome), but look forward to an oldschool ska feel that does well to keep a solid theme. My favorite songs are malmo, nothing good to eat, rachel, and drunken master. A must for all true pietasters fans. If you are new to the pietasters, give them a try!!! You can't go wrong with any album, I would start with Awesome Mix Tape #6 or willis if you are into more mainstrem rock/ska, if you want something a little bit more smooth then go for Ooolooloo or Piestomp (sorry they are hard to come by but good luck) Also Strapped live kicks!!! If you dig the pietasters check out the slackers, toasters, or the specials. Skank forever!

I miss this CD desperately. I lent it to DJ Johannes and he won't give it back! Return it immediately and all is forgiven.

progressive melodies and forward -thinking.......2002-12-05

A compilation of today's finest techno producers incorporated as an intelligent mix with just the right balance of melody and beat. Never switching into total overdrive, this mix from the brilliant Beyer is somewhat removed from his reputation for speed and power live. However, this is definitely no wimp-out and displays Beyer's ability to incorporate both power and melody into a very listenable and enjoyable set. Hopefully, in the not-too-distant-future, he can play San Francisco, a town with a good house-progressive scene, but sadly, starved of serious techno.

A Mellow Side of AdaM BeYeR.......2002-06-20

My initial response when I first listened to this CD was... hmmmm. I have heard Adam Beyer before and I was expecting to hear some hard-hitting techno beats. This album seems to convey a mellower side of Adam Beyer, because his live sets are hard as hell. All in all though, this CD is good enough for a rating of four stars.
