A couple of great moments make it worth owning..........2007-02-05

The decision of whether to buy this one or not depends largely upon how much value you want for your money. When I need a "Priest Fix" I usually head straight for "Victim Of Changes" from "Unleashed In The East." With "Priest...Live" I think you'll find a consensus among the reviewers here that a live document of the "Turbo" tour adds up to a big "so what"...so...what DO you get? For one, I like the version of "Electric Eye" because Halford really spits out the lyrics with venom. "Living After Midnight" is solid, even though it may not be a "career best" performance of the song. "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" slows down a bit for me with Halford's "I want four more big ones" sing-along shtick at the end, but that's what they did onstage, and it's a live version, so that's what you get. I put "Electric Eye" and "Living After Midnight" on my Judas Priest mix CD, which includes tracks from every album from "Unleashed" to "Painkiller," so I feel like I got my money's worth. I gave the CD 3 stars but it's probably closer to two and a half.

Has their big hits but lacks passion.......2007-01-22

Released in 1987, Priest...Live! is Judas Priest's second live album, following 1979's Unleashed in the East. While that album was recorded when the band was still hungry and had yet to achieve worldwide success, Priest...Live! shows a band on the downslide. During the time between, the band had achieved their greatest success while releasing albums of varying quality as the classic releases British Steel and Screaming for Vengeance were countered by the uneven albums Point of Entry and Turbo. The energy that made Unleashed in the East so exciting rarely surfaces here as the songs differ little from the originals except for an occasional guitar fill or Rob Halford scream. The release does contain their most popular songs from the `80s such as "Metal Gods", "Breaking the Law", "Electric Eye", "Heading Out to the Highway", "The Sentinel", "Some Heads Are Gonna Roll", and the hits "Living After Midnight" and "You've Got Another Thing Comin'." Other tracks such as the mid-tempo "Love Bites" and the relentless tracks "Screaming for Vengeance" and "Freewheel Burning" are also very good. However, it's the inclusion of 5 songs from the aforementioned Turbo album that hurts the track listing. While "Rock You All Around The World" is a good anthem and "Turbo Lover" and "Out in the Cold" are okay, none of the songs on that release touch the other songs on this album, even on the reissued version. Even more disturbing is the inclusion of their corniest song ever in "Parental Guidance" while the excellent "Locked In" is not included. No more than two songs should have been included from Turbo as they have so many better songs that should have made the cut like "Desert Plains", "Bloodstone", "United", and "(Take These) Chains." All told, Priest...Live! is similar to AC/DC's 1992 release, Live, in that while it contains their most popular songs, it would have been better if the songs were performed with more passion and had a better song list.

Better than Live After Death!.......2006-11-25

This is the best live album of the '80s. What brings the rating down is that the three bonus tracks are tacked on the end. I would have preferred if the entire album was kept on one disc even if it meant no room for extra tracks. I like that there are no songs that were already on Unleashed in the East. It would have been nice if they squeezed on one more song from Point of Entry. This has the definitive version of Living after midnight. Turbo Lover doesn't work that well live, so they should have cut that and included an older song that wasn't on Unleashed.

3 Stars and I'm being very generous.
This album and the Scorpions "Worldwide Live" just bore me to death.
Both bands made great live albums in the 70s. Judas Priest's "Unleashed in the East" aka Live in Japan is a much better representation of The Priest's ability to really rock out live.
[And the Scorpions "Tokyo Tapes" is a 5 Star Live album in it's original configuration --that is...not the version that's missing "Polar Nights". Find the 2 Disc Set!]

So I must say that "Priest...Live" just kinda sits there and well... It Stinks!
Why? It's too 'by the numbers'. The song don't have the "crunch". If you're a Judas Priest fan you'll understand.
There's too much "Turbo" here. That album was awful.

I must add that the live "Metal Meltdown" with Ripper Owens is pretty damn good.

If you are not a long time fan please don't start with this CD.

Good live set........2005-07-11

Yes unleashed in the east is a bit better as far as recordings go and the song selection is a little better as well. However this set has a good sound and alot of energy. I don't think the fact that to set has been digitaly remastered is a bad thing. Halford's voice is one of the greatist in the industry. Long live Priest!!!!

Would be 5 stars if it wasn't for the shakey beginning.......2007-07-31

Just like the previous reviewer said, this is most definitely probably recorded from the sound board. You can tell because there are some definite shocking boosts in the recording that probably clipped, so at first this is a hard listen. However, with that said and done it is a good concert. Great set list and great performance all around, especially on "Genocide"; however, as I said before the sound quality isn't the best. The first third of the CD makes you unfortunately cringe at times because of the jumps in audio, especially in Halford's voice. But, once you get past track 3-5, it's all good. I think they got the kinks worked out. However, with that said and done, I think the problems could've while not perfected, fixed a bit. They could've lowered certain parts of it and made it a bit cleaner. They probably just took the recording off the sound board, digitalized it and made it into a CD.

However, with all the sound problems at hand, I do recommend this CD. This was Priest at their most popular stage and the set list and performance is amazing. It's very worthy but just be weary of the sound issues. This probably is something for die-hard fans only due to the issues with sound. But, if you are a Priest nut like me, I highly recommend it, just have your finger on the volume control during the first third.

Priest's 1st visit to Denver USA.......2007-07-02

Not a bad recording considering it sounds like it was made directly from the sound board. New drummer Dave Holland sounds boring compared to the excellent drumming heard on "Unleashed in the east". The set list is pretty good and the sound level has some unexpected spikes. Rob Halford's voice is in good shape for most of the songs. Diehard fanatics should like this release that comes with a written history of the band including comments about post-Halford affairs. Rock out out if you can find this one anywhere!

It's Alright, but it lacks the intensity of Unleashed and Live Meltdown!!.......2006-07-13

This live offering is really somewhat boring to be honest. The song selection is pretty good for the most part, although I could do without United (Yawn!!). I have listened to this a number of times now and it is missing something? I just don't feel it has the overall power that Unleashed In The East or Live Meltdown 98 have. The power or rush just isn't present here. It's not a bad live recording, it's just not very inspiring to be honest. Metal is all about the power and the passion of the music and what it entails and this cd just coasts along and does really nothing to provoke such feelings.

The sound is good and the musicianship is good, but the delivery seems non committal if that makes sense? Perhaps the immanent return of Rob Halford was on everybody's mind when this was recorded and the ability to create a strong showing was overshadowed by thoughts of when is he coming back.

Ripper does a fine job yet again of belting out Priest's tunes, but even he can't bring this one to life. If you really want to good Judas Priest live cd get either Unleashed In The East or Live Meltdown 98 as they both offer all kinds of intensity and power. Avoid this one and Judas Priest Live as they both are really kind of boring!!

A solid four stars; just as good as Priest...Live.......2005-11-09

I will rate this double CD in four areas: set list, sound quality, performance of songs, the performance of the hot topic "Tim Owens" on vocals.

The set list could not be better. You get almost every Priest classic you can think of and a few of the new ones with Owens used in studio instead of Halford. The emphasis is on the old rather than the new and most people would agree that the old classics are the better.
The sound quality is really good. It is on the same level as Priest Live produced in 1986, which was resently remastered. It is not quite as good in sound quality as "Unleashed in the East", but few live CD's are. Also, Unleashed had some studio overdubs. The sound on this Live in London is very good and better than that of "Metal Meltdown 98", where the guitars are a bit fuzzy and lost in the mix.
The performance of the songs is great. I'm not taking a dig at Rob Holland because he was obviously good (else he wouldn't have been in Priest) however, the new drummer is obviously better.
The last area to comment on is Tim "Ripper" Owens on vocal. He sounds a bit like Halford and is able to add his own high screams to the songs, but he is not able to do so without separating it from his regular voice. It seems quite forced at times and he labours at reaching high points in songs where Halford naturally trasitioned into those parts. Halford has a naturally better range. Where Halford is unique, Owens just sounds like a regular Joe vocalist who is able to be very versatile at key times. What is great about him, though, is that he never butchers the songs and is able to sound enough like Halford while still doing his own thing. This is what makes people want to own both the old versions and the new ones. Owens is much younger, too, and Halford likely cannot match what he used to do fifteen years ago (especially live).
An interesting anecdote is that Owens gets the lyrics wrong to the start of "Turbo Lover". He says something like we will ride together... You know you're defenceless. Instead it should go: in your senses... you know you're defenceless. I have the DVD of this and it is hilarious to see KK Downing's put-off expression, like he's saying to himself "you dummy, you got the lyric wrong". Nevertheless, the band seemed to have a good relationship with Owens throughout the concert and his tenure with Priest in general. It would not be bad if they asked him back to stay if Halford leaves again. Owens could be a model, as well. He looks great and has a terrific stage presence. Halford, in contrast, is now an old fogie.

If you are looking for the original captivating Judas Priest sound you won't find it on Live in London. Without Halford, JP sounds like every other metal band. Ripper is a great vocalist and he does his job well however, Ripper cannot match Halford's vocal range and ability to harmonize with the lead guitar. To a new listener Live in London will have plenty of energy but, to those looking for vintage Priest it's not here.

Even though Halford is the other member of the metal god's Judas Priest still has it, and this proves that they still have it all, LIVE!!

The Priest are BACK and at it again. If you have 98' Meltdown, this album is that and some...tracks that is. I think it isnt as great as 98 Meltdown but it gives you the oppertunity to hear the greatest metal band in the world with ripper preforming Heading out the Highway and Desert Plains and United among others from demolition. He stumbles on a opening line from turbo lover and works the crowd alright. I can't give it less than a 4 cos I am a huge prist fan but this album is Definately for Die Hards first and foremost. If you have NO priest albums GET THIS or 98 MELTDOWN or PRIEST...LIVE! Their Live albums are amazing and this is no different.

Many doubted that Judas Priest would find a vocalist to capably fill the shoes of legendary frontman Rob Halford. With Ripper Owens, the band found not only a Priest fanatic, but a talented screamer in his own right. Proving that his studio performance on Jugulator was no hoax, Owens displays performing talents on this vigorous double-live album. For concert album cynics, heed this: half of these 23 tunes have not been performed on the two previous Priest live discs, and Owens really belts out those screams with greater accuracy than Halford was able to summon in his last few years in the band. The metal legends unleash the long-lost pre-speed-metal classic "Rapid Fire"; they play an inspired acoustic version of "Diamonds & Rust" that's closer to Joan Baez's original than Priest's 1977 cover; and they dig up two previously unperformed Jugulator songs. Most of what's heard here rates from very good to excellent, though one wishes that "Burn in Hell" wasn't abbreviated and that "Dreamer Deceiver" wasn't excluded; and a few of the mixes could be cleaner. Still, this very live-sounding record (complete with essential raucous audience participation) captures the potent force of a Judas Priest concert performance. --Bryan Reesman

Priest best live cd since Unleashed In The East!!.......2006-07-13

This puppy roars from the opening cord right through to the end. Classic Priest songs and newer offerings sound awesome. Ripper really takes charge in this and the overall vibe and intensity is in full swing. Ripper can really belt it out and he's in fine form here. The sound is really good and the song selection is killer.

NOW...... this is an awesome release! Every song on this double cd gets a perfect 10 in my book! I saw the Priest during this tour with Ripper and man...talk about a set of pipes on that voice!!!!! I truly have to disagree with a couple of reviewers stating that "this is horrible" cause "it doesn't have halford" and another saying that "it's not essential because it doesn't hold up to Beast in the East (actually Unleashed in the East) or Priest...Live. Sorry Charley, neither one of those release are as energetic as this one. I can say this too! I have been a fan for over 25 years. In fact, the Priest...Live cd...well, let's not even go there! This IS the Judas Priest Live cd to own. Those wondering if they should take a chance...DO IT! You won't be disappointed!!!!!!!

Terrible.......2005-02-04

I bought this cd not realizing "Ripper" Owens was on lead vocals- bad mistake. All you have to do is listen to the sample of Victim Of Changes provided here on Amazon. Of course Tipton and Downing sound great, but just wait until the vocals kick in. It's absolutely awful. He sounds like the stereotypical wannabe heavy metal singer from a cheeseball cover band you'd see at the local rock club in the 80's. Do yourself a favor- save your money on this one and pick up an earlier Priest cd with Halford- Unleashed In The East is the best Live one- I'm buying the latest compilation box- only 4 songs from Crapper Owens.

aight. First of all, Judas Priest kicks ass. i started listening to them just recently, and i already own 4 of their CDs. i have to say, this is by far, the best out of all of them. here are some ratings:

1. The Hellion: intro to ellectric eye. sounds better whenit isn'tlive. still good tho. 7/10

2. Electric Eye: once again, non-live version is better 7/10

3. Metal Gods: pretty good song. not the best tho. 8/10

4. Grinder: not too bad. 8/10

5. Rapid Fire: not bad either. 8/10

6. Blood Stained: pretty cool song. 9/10

7. The sentinal: this is when the CD gets better. 9/10

8. Touch of Evil: not bad. 8/10

9. Burn in Hell: pretty good song. 9/10

10. The Ripper: not too bad/not too good. 8/10

11. Bullet Train: really cool song. 9/10

if you lke this, get Demolition. it is awesome. one of their heaviest CDs. if you want a lighter CD with some good songs, try Living After Midnight. anyway. this 2 CD set is Kick-ASS. you need it if you like any metal at all.

Heavy.......2003-04-19

I like new Judas Priest in its own way. I mean, it has three core members, their best drummer and Ripper is good. But it's not close to the best of the classic stuff. That being said, most of the songs on here are very heavy and as should be expected with a good live album, more immediate than the studio versions. The set list is excellent, though they should've included Cathedral Spires, hands down the best song Priest have written post-Halford. Ripper shows he can sing the classics. Though the drum intro to Painkiller here makes the original seem like a studio trick. If you don't mind new Priest you'll like this. Old fans who didn't necessarily like the new studio albums should pick this up. I give Ripper credit as being a good singer but let's face it no one compares to Rob Halford except King Diamond and a couple others.

Awesome version of Beyond the realms of death. The first 3 songs make it worth the asking price. From There the song selection goes a bit downhill. Sound Quality is good. A must for true diehard Priest fans.
