5 out of 5 stars Use my hands to use my heart.......2007-07-09

Even though I usually stick to the coasts, I'll always have a place in my heart for Michigan -- I was born there, after all.

It also happens to be the first album in Sufjan Stevens' proposed fifty-state-album project, "Greetings From Michigan: The Great Lake State." Stevens' mellow indie-folk rules the album with a gentle hand, from sprightly folkpop to banjo balladry -- and it's as fun as it is complex and alluring.

It opens with a gentle piano, joined in by a chorus of horns. "It's the same outside/Driving to the riverside/I pretend to cry/Even if I cried alone," Stevens murmurs, embodying a worker who isn't working. Despite its simplicity, it's packed with self-trickery and windy dissatisfaction. "I forgot the part/Use my hands to use my heart/Even if I died alone..."

Then the tone totally changes with "All Good Naysayers, Speak Up! Or Forever Hold Your Peace," a sprightly little pop tune, and the folky banjo of "For The Windows In Paradise, For The Fatherless In Ypsilanti." From there, he tries out variations of all his folky talents -- dreamlike folkpop, swaying wistful folk, sparkling xylophone, guitar ballads, and steady pipe organs leading into a bluesy ballad.

But the best songs of all are when Stevens combines all his musical influences into one enormous joyous mass of sound -- "Detroit, Lift Up Your Weary Head! (Rebuild! Restore! Reconsider!)" is a glorious mishmash of pop, xylophone, piano, horns and folky interludes, blended into a great soaring epic. So is the luminous "They Also Mourn Who Do Not Wear Black (For The Homeless In Muskegon)."

Sufjan Stevens is one of those rarest artists whose ambitions are dwarfed by their ability -- the guy is a truly brilliant musician and songwriter, which makes his fifty state album goal (assuming he still has it) doesn't seem beyond his reach. Well, time constrains, but he could wring beauty and life from each state.

Certainly his musical ability is astounding -- smooth piano played with wistfulness and energy, a sizzle of electric in "The Upper Peninsula," and mellow acoustic guitar and plucked banjo to give it that folky unpolished sound, along with some slow drums in the background. They're earthy and solid, yet somehow still very polished and solid.

But the music is more colourful than that, with a xylophone played with the delicacy of windchimes. Some of the songs are just that -- xylophone tinkling at us prettily, and nothing else. And many songs are backed by a chorus of horns -- sometimes they blare happily at us, sometimes they groan mournfully through the melodies.

Stevens' voice is well-suited to all this -- deep, smooth and meditative, but he can sing a more energetic tune when he wants to. And he packs plenty of meaning into deceptively simple lyrics, full of Michigan's woes, love of God, past experiences, improving the world, poverty, and just his love of the state. "If the lakes took/The place of the sea/If the cars drove themselves/Way to be!/Opposite the trains moving in/Rivers run interstate, Michigan!"

Few freakfolk artists can even approach the brilliance of Sufjan Stevens' "Greetings From Michigan: The Great Lake State," a practically perfect little folkpop gem. Say YES to "Michigan!"

4 out of 5 stars Rightly praised youthful mastery on display in spades.......2007-04-25

Ambitious wunderkind Stevens certainly brought an elevated vocabulary to the progressive folk he had been cultivating, gaining attention before this gigantic indie release took America's musical underground by storm. The first in the purported 50 state series, as laughable a concept that may seem, this is a powerful realization of Sufjan's rustic melancholia, large compositional arrangements, and eclectic instrumentation all driven by an intense talent to dazzle in the most pleasant of lo-fi ways. At times the enveloping production can almost drown out the simple beauty behind many of these strangely titled songs, particularly when these extra helpings of instrumental prowess feel more ornamental then anything else. The fact remains however, Stevens rose above pretty much any other artist that has tried to make a banjo seem relevant to anyone under 35, proving underneath the overdone arrangements and delicate strumming lies the current Brian Wilson of indie music.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-03-09

Everyone says that Illinois is Sufjan's best album, but they are oh so mistaken. It surely is Michigan. There aren't even words to describe this album. It's devastingly beautiful & honest. I just love it. I've been listening to it non-stop. So amazing.

5 out of 5 stars deserving of the label "masterpiece".......2007-02-26

bought this after hearing 1 track on college radio KTRU in houston; listening to it time and again, i cannot pick a favorite track, as each stands alone in brilliance and yet is bound by the context of the whole album (which is how its meant to be listened to, not just a cut here & there).

i am amazed there are artists like sufjan stevens. and oh so grateful.

4 out of 5 stars Between A Sun Came and Illinois, is where Michigan is.......2007-02-23

The first Sufjan CD I bought was Illinois, which is now one of my all-time favorites. Then I got A Sun Came, and I can hear the potential, in an overall rather weak album. So now I've listened to Michigan, and it lies somewhere between the brilliance of Illinois, and the childishness of A Sun Came. "Flint (for the Unemployed and Underpaid)" has all the heartbreak of "Casimir Pulaski Day" but "Oh God, Where Are You Now? (In Pickeral Lake? Pigeon? Marquette? ...)" is as stupefying as "A Winner Needs A Wand".
Overall I'd give this 4 stars, but I'd recommend that for someone who's new to Sufjan, to start with Illinois. Download "Detroit, Lift Up Your Weary Head! (Rebuild! Restore! Reconsider!)" and "Say Yes! To M!ch!gan!"

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-03-28

This Album, "Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J." is such a great album! It features nine great songs from The Boss, Bruce Springsteen. Blinded by the light is one of the best Bruce Springsteen songs out there. I reccomend ths album 100%.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars........2007-03-13

preceding, as it did, his worldwide fame, and a string of classic albums, this album tends to get shortchanged in the history of rock and roll. no, it is not a match for such masterworks as "the wild, the innocent, & the e street shuffle," "born to run," "darkness on the edge of town," "nebraska," or "we shall overcome: the seeger sessions," but this is an outstanding debut nonetheless. sure, it is a bit verbose, and, yes, perhaps he did dip into a rhyming dictionary a tad to freely, but all in all this is a very fine set of songs. the exuburance of "blinded by the light" is pure joy, while "growin' up" is a classic song that stands with the best of springsteen's songs. "lost in the flood," "for you," "spirit in the night," and "it's hard to be a saint in the city" are all fantastic. listen, and if you disagree: try to write a song of your own, and see if you can better these. also of note, the quiet ballad "the angel," which has an appearance by the great acoustic bass player, richard davis (who performed such timeless musical magic on van morrison's "astral weeks" album). give this album a break, it is not springsteen's best, but it's excellent all the same.

5 out of 5 stars AMG Review.......2007-02-24

Bruce Springsteen's debut album found him squarely in the tradition of Bob Dylan: folk-based tunes arranged for an electric band featuring piano and organ (plus, in Springsteen's case, 1950s-style rock & roll tenor saxophone breaks), topped by acoustic guitar and a husky voice singing lyrics full of elaborate, even exaggerated imagery. But where Dylan had taken a world-weary, cynical tone, Springsteen was exuberant. His street scenes could be haunted and tragic, as they were in "Lost in the Flood," but they were still imbued with romanticism and a youthful energy. Asbury Park painted a portrait of teenagers cocksure of themselves, yet bowled over by their discovery of the world. It was saved from pretentiousness (if not preciousness) by its sense of humor and by the careful eye for detail that kept even the most high-flown language rooted. Like the lyrics, the arrangements were busy, but the melodies were well developed and the rhythms, pushed by drummer Vincent Lopez, were breakneck. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

BRUCE is my favorite - everything he does is fantastic!

3 out of 5 stars (2.5 stars) work backwards to this one.......2006-11-17

I'm sorry, but I don't see what the big deal about Greetings is. It's an OK record, just not a good one. It's certainly far from traditional Bruce, mainly made up of spare, folky, stream-of-conscousness (definitly spelled wrong) ballads that work (the haunting Lost in the Flood; Blinded by the Light and Spirit in the Night, both of which feature great sax from Clarence Clemons) as often as they fail (The Angel; Mary Queen of Arkansas; Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street?) Classic Growin' Up isn't bad at all, but much better heard in its Live 1975/85 reading. This version is mediocre by comparison. The same with Saint in the City. That leaves room for four truly great songs (the aforementioned Blinded; Spirit and Flood plus For You). This is his most Dylan-derived release, but my advice is you pick up a couple of REAL Dylan records instead, as well as a few of Bruce's later albums. He shows pontential here, but he still had a LONG way to go.

Album Description

Greetings from Imrie House collects 11 timeless power-pop confections, odes to both the good, clean and naughtily winking sorts of fun. They capture the former in the sunny tones of the artfully sleek first single "Just The Girl," and the shimmering "Catch Your Wave" (which layers Beach Boys-styled harmonies atop a contagiously jittery new wave melody) and dive into the latter on the young lovers lust-fest "Friday Night." And to prove those pop history lessons stuck with 'em, they even include a cover of the Tommy James classic "I Think We're Alone Now," done up new wave style.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A great pop rock album.......2006-11-26

This album was pretty good. The first single "Just the Girl" is a power-pop gem. The band actually plays their own instruments and writes most of the songs. The only song I didn't like is the 10th track "Lies". That song was stuck in my head for weeks!!! My favorite songs on this album are "Good Day", "Catch Your Wave", "Friday Night" and "Angel to You (Devil To Me)". The last song "Say Goodnight" is kinda sappy but it's ok. Even though the lead singer's vocals are a bit weak I like his voice. Overall I really like this album.

1 out of 5 stars AHHHHHHH!!! THE HORROR! THE HORRORRRR!!!!.......2006-11-24

Ladies and gentlemen, what's the deal with these losers? Seriously these are five grown men with the subject matter
and maturity of a 13-year-old. I think I figured out what's going on here, remember the movie "Big" with Tom Hanks and he plays this young pre-pubescent aged kid who turns into a 30-something-year-old and gets put into all these adult situations and it's fairly amusing? That's exactly what happened with all these wussy emo, pop, and pop punk bands. There must be some secret lab out there that is under the control of the record companies that goes around middle schools and lures them into their clutches and transforms them into "adults" promising them tons of women and money.

Ok so I'm obviously exaggerating but you get my point. All these bands seem to be just unsophisticated ignoramuses that haven't been farther than 10 miles out of their hometown and don't know a lick of what's happening in this big wide world, you know, kind of like a 13-year-old. Well that's the impression I get from idiots like these guys and other pop dribble like Daniel Powter (the dude who sings that abysmal "you had a bad day" song) and that annoying as balls James Blunt (well at least his name is cool) and I can't forget those Hawthorne Heights idiots who are my new "Public Enemy #1" in music.

I'm friggin' tired of these weak pop bands plaguing our airwaves. I mean it just has to stop right now. I thought the boy band era was over but now we essentially have a boy band with guitars disguised as a rock group. I know I sound like a broken record but I haven't written a review in awhile and I needed to vent some anger in a non-violent way. Would you rather I went around blasting away people like this with an AK? Exactly.

But why single these guys out? It's because at work they have the Muzak system set to play every single piece of turd pop song of this decade for the 8 hours I'm there EVERY DAY and one of the songs that's especially grating on my poor brain is this one. I'm complaining because if all of you had to listen to blistering "noisy" metal for 8 hours (the stuff I love) I'm sure you'd be pretty annoyed as well. Actually tonight while listening to this for the 20 billionth time I decided to pull a "Weird Al" and parody their hit "Just the Girl". I gave the song a much more appropriate theme since it's obvious these guys are all pretty homosexual, well I hope you like it! It's called "Just the @#$". Homozon won't let me say it but I'll give you a hint: it's a pejorative term for gays that rhymes with BAG.

He's hot and all the girls want him but he always says "no"
he even pushed me off the runway at our last fashion show
He laughs at my wardrobe but I laugh at his big toe
but why do I desire him? I just don't know

Chorus:

cause his milk tastes sweet
I get a hard on every time we meet
I can't help myself
but to throw myself over him
he's a beast in bed
his d**k slays me dead
and when we're done I always come back for more
because he's just the F** I'm looking for!

he can't shoot a basket to save his life
he can't even throw a ball farther than my bud Jim's wife
in fact he's one of the most effeminate people I've ever met
but the thought of his body always makes me wet

(chorus)

behind closed doors I'm his clandestine lover
he'd never tell anyone not even his mother
in public he looks away from me with his nose in the air
even when I talk to him he acts as if he doesn't care

why he's so ashamed of me outside I'll never know
maybe it's my high pitched voice or my lack of sophistication
but whenever he's busy at night I resort to mast*rb*tion

(chorus x2)

See how easy it is to make a pop song? I made this over a 30 minute period at the most. But where's all my money and success? I won't get any, oh well. At least I have some sanity. By the way, they're forcing me to edit that one word above...it's a shame isn't it? It's not even a bad word! I think I've said enough. PEACE OUT.

4 out of 5 stars good music.......2006-11-13

i really like the music from this CD. all the tunes have a great melody and catchy tunes. my absolute favorites are 'pop princess' and 'catch your wave'!! i first heard their music 2 months ago and i can't stop listening to it! if you like pop/rock music then you'll LOVe this cd. the only bad thing is that all of their songs sound somewhat alike, but that doesn't detract from the overall quality of the music.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly clever music.......2006-11-10

Most people are quick to dismiss such groups as this with a wave and a whisper of "boy band" or "pop," but I couldn't disagree more. While that may be true in some cases, The Click Five is anything but a boy band. They show a hint of punk styling (heck, the album art was lifted straight from British punk-pop) and are really more akin to groups like American Hi-Fi; they may be classified as "pop/rock," but that label is a bit too universal. Their music shows honest creativity, which is notably absent from and sorely needed in that genre. Most of the songs on this album are quite catchy, but not in a "pop-ey" way. Overall, I highly recommend this disc to anyone who likes mainstream rock, punk, or pop.

5 out of 5 stars I know, I know . . . but you will love this CD!.......2006-10-28

You may say another studio produced boy band, but this CD is one of the most underated CD of the year. It's great harmonies, catchy hooks and hot boys in the band would make any school girl's heart swoon; but they are really really good. I've lent this to many friends and not one of them dislikes this CD. Even the ones that were saying, "oh lord, another boy band"! Move over Backstreet Boys and NSync, you're the past. Click Five is the present! It's just fun. And in this crazy world, we need this. Try it out.

5 out of 5 stars Whodo Voodoo.......2007-04-01

With proper promotion this could have been a huge commercial success, but then that would have spoiled the arc that Tim was on, uncompromising artistic integrity, and unrivaled talent, unnoticed and all the more powerful without the hype from Tin Pan Alley and the Under Assistant
West Coast Promo Man.

This album just flat out rocks and I wish people would quit comparing it to Jeff; it stands on its own as an authentic piece of soul music uncategorized. Personally, I never met a Buckley album that I didnt like, though some fans are still trapped in the Goodbye and Hello phase.
They have missed a lot of good music in between.

5 out of 5 stars The best driving down the street with the top down music.......2006-06-01

this is the kind of music that you play so loud you blow out your speakers. You cannot help but dance. Back in the early 70's we shared this album between three apartments and it still takes me back to those days..... Ah yes, Sweet Surrender all over again.

5 out of 5 stars A must have CD.......2005-08-28

Greetings from LA is a classic and must have album, not only for the fans of Tim Buckley but also for those who like good music. Although, it's been years since I listened to the LP for the the first times, the melody, the vocals and the greatness of tracks such as Move with me, Sweet surrender, Get on tot and Get it right remain fresch and unique.

5 out of 5 stars he's gonna mess witcha.......2004-12-27

It's hard to know how much of the lyrical material on this disc is parody, and how much reflects Tim Buckley's own descent into a tragicly hedonistic lifestyle. Three pictures on the disc portray Buckley holding and wearing a gas mask, and a post card gives us the low-down on how temperture inversions and the presence of millions of cars combine to make Los Angelas infamous as the smog capital of the world. But is the smog merely an allegory for the trademark emphasis on hedonism that also identifies L.A., and the danger this presents to our well-being? Buckley's death from a heroin overdose three years after the release of this disc points to where his own head was turning at about this time, and perhaps his own awareness of how he was polluting his own life. But how seriously can we take any of this when Buckley closes out the disc singing "Beat me, whip me, spank me, make it right again" as the chorus to 'Make It Right'? Can he be serious? The post card on the cover requests 50 copies of the disc for the Apollo Massage Parlor since it "sounds real great to rub downs". More parody? Actually, it probably would be a great rub-down soundtrack! And on the opener, 'Move With Me', Buckley is seemingly talking about messing with another man's wife, but the chorus intones that he wants to "mess witcha, mess witcha, mess witcha mind". I get the feeling Buckley means to mess with our psyche's more than our drives. On the other hand, it's hard to argue with the blatant sexuality of 'Get On Top', and on 'Devil Eyes' we have "I got so tired of meaningful looks, I got so tired of coming up lame". Perhaps he's hinting at the symbolic, while hitting us with a ton of erotic bricks.

Aside from the question of how messed up Buckley was becoming, little else about the disc is in question. This to me is Tim Buckley's finest moment. I owned the original vinyl copy while I was in college, and was greatly taken with the funky rock tones underlying each and every song. 'Move With Me' and 'Get On Top' shake it up the best (and there were plenty of times I pulled this disc out of the liner just to hear these two songs), but every track is a toe-tapper. At this point in my life I'm much more appreciative of the quality of voice that Buckley brings to the numbers. He possesses a noticably wide octave range, and while these songs don't always offer him the opportunity to exercise his cords as much as some of his earlier folk fare did, the high and low notes struck can still be stunning. And however you might experience Buckley's voice, and whether he is being sincere or not, he always manages to at least sound sincere. Perhaps it's part of the ruse...

Even though the lyrics and Buckley's voice will capture most of your attention, there is fine back-up work from Buckley and Joe Falsia on guitars, Chuck Rainey on bass and Ed Greene on drums. While this group supplies the core instrumentation, Buckley finds room to throw in the occasional sax, piano, conga, cello, organ, violin, viola, and the Motown sound on backing vocals from Clydie King, Venetta Fields, and Lorna Maxine Willard on two tracks. Don't expect any of the soft and gentle folk tunes that dominated Buckley's 1960's work. He's sold out his Judy Collins persona for a run at Janis Joplin. Lyrics are not included in the intriguing liner, but can be had at http://www.lyricsdownload.com/tim buckley

Tim Buckley always seemed to be on the outside looking in, and this album was so far-out in its subject matter for 1972 (ironically it was recorded at Far Out Studios in Hollywood... at least that's what it says) it isn't surprising it didn't appeal to a wider audience. Not many performers took the sexual revolution to these heights before or since, whether they were serious about it or not. Whatever you might think of the conscious content however, not hearing this disc will rob you of some of the finest instrumental and vocal sounds produced in the early 1970's. Let him mess witcha mind.

5 out of 5 stars The soul is "grande".......2004-05-19

Sweet Surrender!!! that's the song that got me into bying this album, and what a album! On "move with me" he takes me on a ride in the same vibe as the stones have. "Get on top" equally great with his sex frustrated voice in peak condition. The flow on "Hong Kong Bar" is simulair to the feeling you get from the doors "riders on the storm" and closing Make it right is dramatic as few. There is a few not so brilliant songs but mixed up with these mindblowers that just dosent matter...If you love Jeff then learn to love...

5 out of 5 stars Triple Shot Of Bruce Juice.......2004-11-20

Greetings From Asbury Park served notice that there was a new musical force on the scene. On his debut, Bruce showed he was the best songwriter to come along since Bob Dylan. The album kicks off with the musical tongue twister "Blinded By The Light" that showed Bruce wasn't a typical singer-songwriter. The song has a funky riff and is replete with horns. "Spirit In The Night" introduced the E Street sound and is a precursor to the character oriented songs that would appear later on Born To Run & Wild. "Does This Bus Stop at 82nd St?" is fun and "For You" is a rare rock song about suicide. "Growin' Up" & It's So Hard To Be A Saint In The City" show early signs of Bruce's "Tramp" persona. "Lost In The Flood" is the great forgotten Bruce song and is as good a song as he has ever recorded. While Greetings is uneven at points ("Mary, Queen of Arkansas' & "The Angel"), it shows an artist who had a very original sound and huge potential. It is great to throw it in the CD player and hear a young, raw and hungry Bruce Springsteen and listen to where it all started.

The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street shuffle may only contain 7 songs, but they pack a punch and are among the finest of Bruce's career. The album opens with the funky guitar riff of "The E Street Shuffle". "4th Of July" is the song that made Asbury Park famous and Madame Marie's a mecca for Bruce fans. "Kitty's Back" is a blazing rock 'n' soul workout and is followed by the comical "Wild Billy's Circus Story". On the original album, the last three songs constituted side two and it is about as perfect of an album side as there is in history. "Incident on 57th Street", "Rosalita" and "New York City Serenade" is a three part musical suite and they flow seamlessly into one another. The stories they tell are so vivid that they are almost like musical literature. Bruce has released albums that were musically superior to Wild, but never one that was this much fun.

In Darkness On The Edge Of Town, Springsteen's characters are no longer looking to escape their problems, they've giving up escape a long time ago. They are searching for answers to the situations they find themselves in. Optimism has been replaced by despair and cynicism. "Badlands" is an angry anthem about never being satisfied with where you are in life. "Adam Raised A Cain" is about the struggles between a father and his angry son and "Factory" is about the drudgery of everyday life. Songs like "Something In The Night", "The Promised Land" and "Racing In The Streets" are about chasing a dream that one will probably never find. "Candy's Room", "Streets Of Fire" & "Prove It All Night" are about putting everything on the line for someone and having to constantly prove their devotion. The title song best sums up the album. People are looking for answers to the same questions, willing to pay the cost, but never find them. No matter how much time they search into the Darkness On The Edge Of Town, they end up in the same place.

4 out of 5 stars 3 Bangs: Less Than 30 Measley Bucks ?!.......2003-08-12

If I didn't have all three of these albums in my collection, I'd jump on this deal. 3 early Bruce albums for ...? Each disc buries every post-"River" album (with the exception of "Nebraska") by a long shot. Of the 3, "Wild & Innocent" is the least accessible, and even it boasts 'Rosalita', '4th of July'(better known as 'Sandy'), and the weighty 'New York City Serenade'. The poetry on "Greetings" is weird, and playful, and fun as hell: "Nuns run bald through Vatican halls, pregnant, pleading immaculate conception...?" And "Darkness"? Well, it's just a rock-solid album, pun intended. These albums are must-haves for anyone who knew and loved Bruce before the "Born in the USA" debacle.

5 out of 5 stars Holy smokes! 3 of Springsteen's records at once!.......2002-04-03

In my humble opinion, 'The Wild, the Innocent, & the E st. Shuffle' remains one of Bruce's best albums. Taking a lot of inspiration from Van Morrison's 'Astrel Weeks,' Springsteen made a funky record that plays like cinema. Sort of a Scorsese-meets-Fellini epic. This was the record that had the East Coast rock community waiting in anticipation for what turned out to be 'Born to Run.' (hence the simultanious Time & Newsweek cover stories)

'Darkness on the Edge of Town,' of course, is loaded with Springsteen classics that he still plays live today - Badlands, Promised Land, Prove it All Night etc...

This is a must-buy! If you've ever had a chance to see Gary Jules at the Hotel Cafe in LA, you know how incredible this guy is. 'St. Christopher's Lullaby' is an essential anthem for anyone in love. 'Ghosts' will leave you positively shaken!

5 out of 5 stars Relaxed and flowing.......2003-04-01

Gary Jules puts together a tremendous CD that combines his instrumental knowledge with his voice. The result is a flowing, relaxed sound that puts you at ease. If you've listened to "Mad World" from the Donnie Darko soundtrack you know what an amazing talent this man is. Do yourself a favor and pick this CD up.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful folk rock and stunning vocals.......2002-11-16

Gary Jules is one of LA's best local artists, and one of my favorite artists of all time. He manages to say a lot with very little, and I've not heard him sing a single song that I haven't liked. This is a great debut, with a good variety of sounds; some of my absolute favorite tunes on this album are "Owen Down", "Push", and "Heroes and Heroin". I also very strongly recommend Gary's most recent album, "Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets", which includes the tune most folks are probably familiar with, the cover of "Mad World" from Donnie Darko. ...

        Album Description

This DualDisc release of Dishwalla's incredible live album takes the band up a notch by including live performance videos of "Counting Blue Cars," "Opaline," "Somewhere In The Middle," "Angels Or Devils," and "Home". Also included are "Home" Navy Performance video live from the battleship Nimitz and a Dishwalla photo gallery.

Between the fall of 2001 and the Summer of 2003 Dishwalla went on tour to promote their 2002 release Opaline. Produced by Gregg Wattenberg (Five For Fighting) and recorded in Los Angeles, the album proved relentless on the radio airwaves with the Top 20 hit, "Somewhere in the Middle." Touring Consistently for two Years, the band performed 258 shows in 470 days covering both ground and air. The performances were recorded live and these moments capture the band in what athletes call "the flow state." Dishwala was in the zone, redefining their boundaries and performing better than ever. Traveling with Navy Morale Welfare Recreation tour in Europe and North Africa on board the USS Nimtz only fueled the intensity of their performance. This live album is the result of a rock band doing what they love. Some fans call it Dishwalla's Greatest Hits!

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Proof That Jazz Is NOT Dead, but Alive and Kicking!.......2004-10-17

Lately, it doesn't seem that jazz is dead, but the genre definitely needs a classy zip. In the 50's and 60's, jazz had a certain elegance about it, that wasn't underminded by it's energy or sheer fun. Not a lot of bands seem to be able to do that anymore. When was the last time a classy, first-rate jazz band had a free show in New York City? How often do jazz bands tour all over the world and still make time to contact their fans on the internet? How often do first-rate jazz musicians stay after shows until they've met all of their fans?

The answer is: not often at all. I'd say never, but Royal Crown Revue does all of those and more.

The band, after 10 years of a busy and exciting career in dishing out what they accurately describe as "hard boiled swing", have proven to cynics and naysayers that they were more than bandwagon-jumping, trendy scenesters that followed a Gap commercial. This band has been committed to making original, soulful music, and doing innovative covers of tasteful classics. In their career, they've put rejuvinating energy into such old standards as "Beyond the Sea", "Stormy Weather" and "Salt Peanuts", showing any jazz fan that if they wanted to know the definitive version of any song, they can't stop paying attention to this band. On top of that, their originals demonstrate their musical genious as songwriters and musicians.

Their new album thankfully doesn't break this tradition. I thought that I knew the best versions of some of some of jazz's biggest standards, but their arrangement of "Come Fly With Me" even gives Old Blue Eyes a run for his money! This album is a best of the best without being a boring "Greatest Hits". here they provide some of their most obscure old gems, along with new covers and originals. The band takes to time like a great bottle of merlot: gracefully and with improved flavor. Some bands get more boring with years, yet this band manages to preserve their energy, their creativity, and their signature classic sound to release what may be one of the finest cd's of their career. If you don't know about this band, WAKE UP! If you think this band is another one of those "neo-swing" bands, you really ought to get with the times. This isn't 1996. It's 2005, and this band sounds better and brighter than ever. You can't claim to be a musical connoisseur until you know these guys, and this is a great place to start. What are you waiting for, bum?

5 out of 5 stars Topping the last two releases.......2004-07-28

RCR's latest offering comes blasting out like a note from Scott Steen's golden horn. Fans will appreciate the previously rare tracks from the band's sought-after 1994 demo and new listeners will not be able to deny the talent that seeps from their extensive repertoire starting with the essential 'Come Fly With Me' (preview it and two other songs on their brand new website). Every song following is filled with energy, romance, and enthusiasm. The new band members don't miss a beat.

By the end of the album, you'll be ready to relax to the lilting 'You Go To My Head' only to be jarred out of your romantic reverie as the horns come blaring back for a killer take on the classic 'Viva Las Vegas.'

This album is not only packed with an hour of awesome music, it also contains some of the best enhanced content I've seen on an album. Along with the killer design, it features photos of the band, stories behind the songs, an oft-requested/never-shown music video for their previous hit, 'Watts Local,' and more.

If you haven't heard from these guys for a while, have been an addicted fan for years, or find this is your first experience with the band, it's hard to deny this is a must have.

Support the band by buying from their site (and save money), where they also have an autographed version available.
