5 out of 5 stars The best-value compilation of early VdGG work.......2001-03-02

Over 71 minutes worth of first-phase Van Der Graaf: two tracks from THE LEAST WE CAN DO, two tracks from H2HE, all the tracks bar one from the classic PAWN HEARTS, and the previously unobtainable 'Theme One', written by Beatles producer George Martin. And it's one of the cheapest CDs in the catalogue -- what more could you ask for?

Well, it's not remastered. But I'm quibbling. This is an excellent portfolio from a band which rose to the heights in 70/71 of headlining a tour organised by its label, Charisma, above its stable-mate Genesis! There's nothing from THE AEROSOL GREY MACHINE, the band's first album, which was never released in the UK. It's not an album I know.

Until VdGG released the recent INTRODUCTION compilation, this was always the album that I pointed new fans to, along with its companion SECOND GENERATION (if you can get it). Some books classify Van Der Graaf not as progressive but as 'experimental', and far closer to the ambitions of German bands such as Can. Once you know VdGG, you realise how utterly unique they were. Any band that sings about a plague of lighthousekeepers has got to be very weird indeed.

This is a wonderful compilation of Van der Graff. Ther is also a "Second Generation " compilation of their second era. Triple AAA progressive rock. I bought these two compilations and later had to buy each and every studio albums, totally hooked by this incredible group.

4 out of 5 stars some great music that got lost..........2005-01-16

...among the late 80's / early 90's LA (read "Guns N Roses") rock scene. Funhouse was a good band that got lost through the cracks. While music producers and record companies were searching for the next GNR, bands like Funhouse were passed by. Shame too, there's some great music on this disc. I'd say the strongest cuts here are "Self-Denial", "The Preacher" and my personal favorite "Y. R. S.". The rest of the disc is fairly strong as well, though not quite as strong as the aforementioned tracks. "One Funhouse" is an anthemic radio-friendly cut that I like as well. Check this CD out, I think you might be surprised about the music you missed from the early 90's.

      5 out of 5 stars excellent cd.......1999-08-17

      5 out of 5 stars kicks tail!!!.......1999-06-27

I met up with the bass player of this band and he gave me this CD. Its sort of CRUE sounding. It really kicks tail.. I wish they were still around
