Into Broadway's creative vacuum of revivals, movie adaptations, and Hollywood star vehicles comes Rent, the story of squatters, junkies, performance artists, struggling musicians, drag queens, aspiring filmmakers, and HIV-positives (and you thought Miss Saigon's helicopter landing was cool). Undoubtedly among the defining pop cultural events of 1996, Rent has already won four Tony awards and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. More importantly, it threatens to bring substance back to the Great White Way.

Transposing Puccini's 100-year-old opera La Bohème into modern day Bohemia (19th-century Paris's Left Bank becomes late-20th-century New York's East Village where the scourge of tuberculosis becomes the plague of AIDS) Rent celebrates life among the young, sick, and unconventional. While Broadway shows are hardly the place for authentic portrayals of the latest marginalized hipsters, composer Jonathan Larson (who died at age 36, days before his musical opened) managed to sculpt vivid characters and scenes that bring Avenue A as close as it will ever come to 42nd Street. And by telling a socially relevant story of living without the guarantee of a future (renting, that is), Larson does his own little bit to define an X'ed generation. At worst, Rent is the Hair of the '90s.

For the majority of us who won't be seeing Rent anytime soon, the Original Cast Recording is more than just an after-show souvenir. Well-packaged with a complete libretto, the two-CD set is a worthwhile album separate of live performance. Full of songs that are funny and catchy, inspiring and touching, smart and hip and not overly sentimental, Rent mixes showtune pop with elements of rock, R&B, dance, gospel, and tango to make one of the best albums of the year--certainly the best rock opera in decades. La vie bohème, indeed. --Roni Sarig

1 out of 5 stars Rent - a Celebration of Financial, Hygenic and Moral Degeneracy Masquerading as Moving Drama.......2007-05-28

When I first received my copy of Rent's soundtrack, one of my friends had the good manners to warn me that I would "hate the message." I am not surprised at this assessment, but what is more unfortunate is that the production as a whole does not make up for that objectionable message enough to make this a worthwhile purchase for anyone uninterested in a mindless affirmation of the self-destructive "bohemian" lifestyle. The lyrics alternate between vapid pseudo-philosophical platitudes ("Measure in love, seasons of love") and ugly overtones of Marxist class envy ("Yuppie scum"). The voices of the singers are disputable in quality - the most impressive being Idina Menzel's boisterous, full-bodied rock vocals and Jesse L. Martin's poignant soul-inspired voice and the worst being Daphne Rubin Vega's rasping excuse for a voice, whose every note invokes simultaneous feelings of pity and revulsion. As for the music, while certain tunes hold a certain decadent charm, the overall style soon becomes repetitive and tiresome, with guitars assailing the ears almost as frequently as paeans to drug use, socialism and "loooooove". How this mediocre blasphemy against Puccini could possibly have won a Tony is beyond my understanding, and how anyone could bring themselves to spend more than a dime upon such a second-rate soundtrack should be equally beyond your belief. Avoid this record.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Hooked!.......2007-05-01

I am a Renthead/Junkie for many years now. The cast recording has been with me for years due to a recommendation from a college friend. I have been playing this CD and know the words by heart.

I was the first in line when the movie came out and had a heartfelt emotional experience. And now it has finally happened...

I just saw the show for the first time on April 28th, 2007 and may I say GO SEE IT! The songs have not lost any relevance in the last 11 years. The cast of the tour is great and I hope one day to see the original cast perform.

Thank you Jonathan Larson! God speed and I love you :-)

5 out of 5 stars It gets even better.......2007-04-27

Although the movie soundtrack is fantastic, I found this soundtrack is even better. Having originated from the play, it may provide another perspective that enhances your "Rent" experience overall.

Jonathon Larson rocks!

5 out of 5 stars LOVE LOVE LOVE... ALL TIME FAVORITE.......2007-01-17

I saw the musical twice, once in L.A. and other in Chicago and it was GREAT!!! I'm a huge fan and pretty much know all the words. I never get sick of listening to this cd and others find it catchy too. I'm hoping my husband will let me watch it one more time in NY. :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-01-12

This two disk CD hardly ever leaves my CD player. I actually went out and bought a bigger CD player just so that I could leave it in.

I have always thought that the comparations between "Rent" and "Hair" are totally unfair. In "Rent" we have a full cast with real and meaningful people without the false truths and lies that were around in the late 1960. Jonathan Larson is the Balzac of Generation X.

5 out of 5 stars This is an amazing worship CD..........2007-03-18

This is the first CD of Byron Cage I have ever heard. I can't tell you now what made me look for him except that it was the Spirit's leading. I was looking to refresh my gospel, P&W CD collection as I worship and workout to this music. I was led to this CD by Byron Cage and from the first song, I knew I had made a good choice. Not everyone who has a good singing voice can lead worship. You have to be Spirit-filled and Spirit-led to be a true worship leader, and Byron Cage is. God has touched him with a special gift and each song on this CD leads me deeper into worship when I hear it. I bought this and Judith Christie McAllister's "In His Presence Live" together; got one first then the other (hers) later. So I had time to listen to Byron Cage's over and over before I got turned onto the next one. If I had to choose which was my "favorite", I couldn't choose. I just feel so blessed to have them both to lead me into a deeper private worship experience with my Lord and Savior.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Incredible!.......2007-03-10

I can't believe I waited so long to buy this CD; it's been in my car's cd player for several months now. Every song on here is so annointed. My day does not really get going until I hear "I Will Bless The Lord".

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Invitation!.......2007-02-07

This is one invitation you do not want to turn down!! Byron Cage has an anointed voice and gift!! This CD is so powerful. I am really upset that more mainstream stations don't play his music. This CD lifted me up during a difficult time during the loss of my dad. I literally placed the CD in for the first time in November of 06 and it has been the only CD in my player for the past three months!! There is healing and salvation, joy and praise in this CD. Get it now!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting.......2007-01-14

He has done it again. The Lord is using him in marvelous ways,

4 out of 5 stars Needs more work.......2007-01-05

I can only connect with maybe 3 songs on this album. They are good, dont get me wrong, but when you've heard worship and then you've heard WORSHIP your expectation is greater.
He has some good worship songs and some lively songs of praise, but I think I've been too spoiled to really grab hold of this one.

Amazon.com essential recording

Byron Janis' celebrated recordings of these two concertos have never sounded better than in this new remastering by Mercury's Wilma Cozart Fine. Talk about recordings usually focuses on the artists and composers, and rightly so, but there are some people in the industry whose names you should know, producers and engineers whose work is as artistically excellent as the performers they record. During the late 50s and early 60s the Fines, husband and wife, created a catalog of recordings, which, when all is said and done, is probably title for title the finest in existence. There isn't a single one that isn't worth hearing, and some, like this one, belong in every collection. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The definitive recording.......2007-07-17

Although this album features two orchestras (LSO and then the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra) the early 1960s Janis-Dorati partnership produced what is arguably the best single piano & orchestra disk in the catalog and a definitive rendition of these two popular concerti.

While the pace is sometimes stately for the big rolling Rachmaninov themes, the passage work is spritely and the overall effect is one of great energy.

The particular benefit of these early 1960s recording is Wilma Cozart's Mercury Living Presence technique which used a single placement of just three microphones (unlike the modern tendency to "mike" every instrument in the orchestra and then adjust balance concerns in re-mixing). This gives the thrill of being at an actual performance (the "living presence" of the orchestra) but without the coughs and other limitations of a concert recording. Indeed, although the CD is reconstructed from original analog tapes, it's hard to imagine that any recording with the best artist in the world could improve on the sound.

In short, if my house was burning down, I'd run back in for this CD.

5 out of 5 stars my ears don't lie do they?.......2006-05-29

I have no reference to compare this recording with, I only have Rachmaninov's 2nd piano concerto played by Richter which I like very much, but I cannot describe what's so good about it.
I don't have enough interest for piano solo or recitals to be able to tell what exactly makes a good pianist (in general and for me personal)
I'm not even sure what I like or not.

Well maybe I like uncomplicated, straightforward piano playing, with a somewhat light, clear touche the best, I'm not that fond of heavy pedal use.
(I like Kempff's Beethoven Concertos with Ferdinand Leitner very much)

But my taste and understanding for piano solo (violin solo as well) has to be developed yet.
For now I'm choosing "uncomplicated playing" as my personal preference...but with not much confidence about it.

These performances by Janis and Dorati are pretty straightforward and I'm pleased that I made a good choice out of many recordings.

Dorati's orchestral accompaniment is forceful, sometimes pretty manic, he constantly breaths in Janis' neck, which is breathtaking.
The sound of the orchestra/recording is close and direct with lots of presence what helpes to get even more involved in the performance.
The performances I heard never gave that sense of commitment in the music Dorati and Janis give.
True, the recording helps a lot and obviously the "old sonics" too...I mean the sound is absolutely fabulous, but you're aware it is an old recording and it does add that bit of authenticity to it.

In Rachmaninov's 2nd concerto I like Richter/Wislocki better, but probably only because of the 1st movement, which is slower - slower than everyone else, for me Richter/Wislocki's tempo feels more natural than Rachmaninov's own and everyone else's faster readings.
Janis/Dorati's Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra however is better than Wislocki's Warsaw Orchestra.

As you noticed I haven't mentioned Byron Janis' playing at all...that's because I simply cannot say anything relevant about it, I have to learn a lot and listen to many pianists to make a valid comment.

The performance itself, as a whole, by Janis and Dorati is excellent, no doubt about it, there must be something seriously wrong with my ears if I am wrong about this.

5 out of 5 stars Classic!.......2006-02-19

Definitely a "must-have" performance in piano concerto category. One of a great recordings sonically. Mostly clean throughout the disc, I heard just a few cracking noises during high energy sections.

5 out of 5 stars A very special gifted pianist!.......2005-07-06

Byron Janis was one of the most prominent American pianists of his generation, headed by William Kapell, Rosalyn Tureck, Leon Fleisher, John Browning and Lorin Hollander. He possessed tune, technique and temperament, the famous three T required to shine in this difficult activity.
Maybe the favorite repertoire did not fill the future expectations of new audiences after the sixties. The new tendencies of the Sixties shaped new searches: the Russian repertoire had been reassigned to three magnificent pianists from the USSR: Emil Gilels, Sviatoslav Richter and Vladimir Ashkenazy. The impressive number of Piano Festivals all around the world turned out the attention of new audiences, avid to meet the new talents: precisely The Busoni competition allowed to young promises as Marta Argerich to get a place, but also worked out positively for many European artists as Alfred Brendel, Walter Klien, John Lill, John Ogdon, who triumphed in Tchaikovsky Competition.
The special interest for the Russian music, decayed in that decade. Mahler, Shostakovich, Nielsen, ascended in the musical taste and the piano music of Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Schubert remained for small audiences in Europe, but not in USA . There was a huge interest for the new compositions, so Bartok, Schoenberg, Messiaen, Copland and even Brahms held the attention, but the orchestral sound prevailed over the Hall Concerts. The European invasion and the new names from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, shadowed many emerging figures.
That's why the new generation of pianists (with the exception of two true icons in the American pianism as Rosalyn Tureck and Earl Wild) as David Dubal, Gerard Robbins, Paul Jacobs, Raymond Lewenthal, Jerome Rose, Adrian Ruiz and Ursula Oppenheimer decided to play Reinecke, Copland, Busoni, Alkan and Liszt.
In other words the lack of perception of the new musical tendencies, plus the sudden decay of new directors established the difference and the artistic surviving for many gifted pianists, far beyond the personal disgrace of Fleisher.
However this recording will become a true historical reference for the future generations.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful recording.......2005-04-19

What can I say about this CD that's not already said? I totally agree with all the comments expressed here by all the reviewers.

In all my 50 years, I never knew piano music could be so rich, evocative and inspiring. This is one discovery that came so late but nevertheless so wonderfully fulfilling and satisfying in my enjoyment of music over a lifetime. I can truly say that this music has enriched my life and came at a time when life seems to be coming to a close, at least as I perceived it for myself. Imagine, such music created nearly fifty years ago still sound so fresh and beautiful that it can touch, move and inspire us even now, after all the years! I encourage music lovers everywhere, especially of classical music, to get hold of this CD and listen to it at least once in their lifetime. You may experience the same sense of joy and wonder as I have. Also, as far as possible, try to listen to it on a high-end high-fidelity audio system. This will definitely give a clearer and more detailed insight, `revelation' into the music, making it that so much more enjoyable.

If Byron Janis was a student of Vladmir Horowitz, then I must say that in this instance, the disciple has truly excelled above and beyond that of the master (as chinese sayings go). In comparison to the Horowitz/Reiner/RCA/1951 recording which some described as the definitive and ultimate interpretation of the Rachmaninoff Third, I find that the latter much less emotionally involving and satisfying. In my opinion, many things in the latter - the seemingly `missing' orchestration (overwhelmed by the forceful pianist maybe), the `plonky' and `banging' piano tone in many instances, the relatively `cold' technical rendition, poor mono recording with thin and reedy sounds overall etc - make it inferior by far. The only other worthy contender, which even comes close to this by Byron Janis, is the Martha Argerich/ Kondrasin/Bavarian RSO/Philips/1980 recording.

So don't hesitate, go get the SACD version of this CD now and enjoy....

1 out of 5 stars Stay Away.......2006-01-05

While the piping is excellent, the audio, particularly in the first half of the cd is terrible. Nearly 15 minutes are almost indecipherable. I think the recording was made with a hand held mike at the edge of a field.

4 out of 5 stars Edinburgh Military Tattoo.......2001-05-19

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo first started in 1947 with some spirited displays of army piping and dancing. Since that time the show has grown to become a world class act, unfortunately losing some of its traditional elements along the way. The word "Tattoo" is a corruption of the Dutch "Doe den Taptoe" which literary means "turn off the taps", a reference to when a lone drummer would play a "tattoo" or drum roll to signal the inkeeprs to stop serving beer and to summon the troops back to barracks. This ceremony was performed by the British while they were in the low countries during the early 18th century, but it is a custom common to many armies of that time, in particular the various German princeapalities of the day. Over time the Tattoo evolved into a more elaborate affair as more bands and musicians were drawn into its fare. What we have here is the modern development of the form started in previous centuries. The Edinburgh Tattoo is justly famed for its display of massed pipes and bands, and while the recording quality here is not the best, the listener can still get a good idea of the spectacle produced. The original recording of this 1972 show was recorded by EMI, but this version is a knock-off cut that was done by a small American record firm, and which since has been sold about in various forms as a popular item. It is unfortunate that we don't have a better version of the show for listeners than this. The Tattoo produces a recording every year, as well as a video which can be obtained by contacting the Edinburgh Military Tattoo via their website which can be found using any search engine. The good thing about this recording is that it does provide a glimpse of the show in its heyday, where modern fluff and show biz influences had not crept in as much as they have today. For this reason this CD is worth having, and serves as an introduction to this great pageant of the Scottish regiments and the British army. Even though the show is watered down today with pop elements, the grandeur is still there when the massed pipes and drums march out onto the castle esplanade playing the grand old tunes. Even the politically correct producers can't ruin this grand sight, and its hoped they never will!

5 out of 5 stars Not like being there, but a good appetizer.......2000-11-23

The producers and engineers for this CD are to be commended for the remarkable quality they obtained on this outdoor recording! While not quite like being there, it does convey the spirit and energy of the Tattoo.

5 out of 5 stars The Beauty of Rachmaninoff.......2006-11-10

This album contains some of Rachmaninoff's most beautiful and romantic music which should appeal to everyone, even if you're not a classical music fan. The performances are first rate and you may even shed a few tears listening to this very emotional music. These excerpts from some of Rachmaninoff's major works may induce you to want the entire compositions for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Applause.......2002-03-12

I'll add my applause to these reviews. It's an elegant collection of Rachmaninov pieces. Simply beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2001-05-21

If you are a Rachmaninov fan, this CD is a must. Of all the CD's I have of Rachmaninov, this is my favorite. The orchestra's that perform capture the essence of what he composed. It is a beautiful CD guaranteed to please. As the back of the CD states, "Rachmaninov and romance go together like Romeo and Juliet"

4 out of 5 stars Rachmaninoff for Romance.......2000-04-25

I purchased this CD primarily for Trac#2--Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini-18th Variation. I wasn't disapointed! The whole cd is very relaxing and definitly puts you in the mood. I thought the cd would contain only piano music but there are many well-orchestrated and dramatic tracs.

A vibrant tribute to MGM's legendary confluence of brains, talent, hard work, ambition--and dare we say it?--massive egos, Singin' in the Rain long ago took its rightful place among the first rank of the studio's dizzying catalog of film musicals. This double-disc, 46-track 50th-anniversary edition features all of the film's familiar songs, as well as numerous outtakes and extended versions, many culled directly from the film's original recording masters. Its second disc also chronicles the film's clever--if studio imposed--self-referential musical gambit of recycling a slate of Arthur Freed/Nacio Herb Brown songs from Metro's first decade by including 14 of the originals, including performances by Jeanette McDonald, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Freed himself. Featuring a dozen previously unreleased recordings and an illustrated booklet containing the insightful reminiscences of the film's original writers, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, it's the ultimate musical companion to one of cinema's magical, enduring masterpieces. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars the perfect movie.......2007-03-10

My old Gene did it: the perfect movie, the perfect american history, the perfect music. Some people think musicals are "B" movies. I say them: look about the dream, the performance, the music.
Who can say what is beatiful? Look at faces of Gene and Stan during the shooting on the set: whole concentration and attention for everything.
This is a unique moment in their story, and in the story of cinema.
Unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE MY FAVORITE SONG, AND THANKS TO THIS CD I CAN LISTEN TO IT ALL DAY LONG!!.......2007-01-28

I love Singin' in the Rain. It was the movie that made me like musicals, not those simple, mellow movies like South Pacific and the Sound of Music, but REAL musicals, with people like Fred Astaire or Eleanor Powell tapping their hearts out, or great singers like Frances Langford or Dick Powell putting over a song like they mean it.The Singin' in the Rain 2disc special edition introduced me to my favorite movie, the Broadway Melody of 1936, the MOST AMAZING MOVIE EVER! So I was so glad when my parents got me the soundtrack to Singin' in the Rain, and besides the music of the 1951 versions of the Nacio Herb Brown/Arthur Freed, there are also the original versions of the songs in their original movies. I am so glad that Rhino put the duet of Robert Taylor and June Knight singing I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin' on this CD set! It's my favorite song, and now I can listen to it! Hooray!! It's the best song EVER!! There's also vocals of Charles King singing the Broadway Melody, which is great! And many more, like Bing Crosby, Frances Langford, Jeanette MacDonald, and other great singers I can't think of right now. This CD set is great, the sound is nice and un-staticy (mostly), there are 30-plus songs, and the price is phenomenal. I love my favorite song, and now I can listen to it all day long!! Yay! :)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Soundtrack to a Wonderful Movie.......2006-06-16

Yes, this is it--the first real musical I ever saw. Okay, I saw "Wizard of Oz" and "The Sound of Music", and I love both of those musicals dearly. I had even seen "My Fair Lady." I thought musicals were all like those. Until this one. I had never seen such dancing. And this CD causes me to relive the joy of the musical each time I listen to it. Complete with the tap sounds. I love that they included even the deleted songs. Now we just need a DVD that has all the deleted scenes in context. But the studio probably threw all those away. Oh well, our imaginations can take care of what is missing.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-03-20

This is a great CD of music for your family to listen to. Our family enjoys it very much.

4 out of 5 stars musical memories.......2006-03-14

I enjoyed this CD very much, as I remember seeing the movie years ago. I grew up watching MGM musicals and this was one of the best. I loved all of the wonderful songs that came from this movie. Great sound on this CD.

The James Bond spy saga is the world's longest running film cycle, and among its most financially successful. But this soundtrack for the series' 1962 debut is easily the least typical of what became a rich, evocative musical tradition. Though anchored by composer Monty Norman's iconic, twang-guitar powered "James Bond Theme," the bulk of the composer's music is anglicized calypso that echoes the film's Jamaican setting, such as the reworking of "Three Blind Mice" Norman dubbed "Kingston Calypso" and other playful kitsch like "Under the Mango Tree." But the presence of John Barry as arranger on "The James Bond Theme" (performed by the composer's jazzy John Barry Seven ensemble) is a crucial musical portent of what was to come: the latter composer would soon give the series much of its trademark elegance and intrigue via his series of later Bond scores. This new edition as been digitally remastered and features informative new liner notes and artwork from the film. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Monty Norman goes to Jamaica.......2007-06-11

If ever a movie desperately NEEDED an "upgraded" version of a soundtrack album, DR. NO (1962) is it! Only 7 of the 18 tracks on the album actually appear in the film, and most of the music in the film is not on the album! The current "soundtrack album" is more like one of those modern items that say "Music inspired by the film" (like the one Prince did for BATMAN in 1989).

Monty Norman did 2 recording sessions for the film: the first, a lightweight, bouncy & moody score rich in Jamaican styling; the second, a sombre, intense, exciting "orchestral" score in the classic "crime jazz" style. One of his compositions, "The James Bond Theme", based on his own "Good Sign Bad Sign" (from an unproduced play) turned up here and there in the score, but it was also re-recorded at the request of the producers by John Barry, and this version was so satisfying, it wound up being used at least 5 times over the course of the picture, and reappeared in every Eon Production since. The album breaks down as follows:

1)"James Bond Theme"-- by The John Barry Seven; surely the best recording of this ever made, it appears in the film's opening and closing credits; when Bond leaves the casino and arrives at his office; as Bond drives to Miss Taro's house (before he's ambushed); and when he arrives at Miss Taro's house. This recording was even reused as-is in OHMSS (the assault on Piz Gloria) and on some prints of THUNDERBALL (the end credits). For decades it was disputed whether Norman or Barry really wrote it, but it has apparently been proven in Norman's favor (and if one listens carefully, snippets of it can be heard in other pieces in the film-- none of which appear on this album, unfortunately).
2)"Kingston Calypso"-- by Byron Lee & The Dragonaires; this variation on "3 Blind Mice" is heard during the opening credits as 3 killers stroll toward their target.
18)"Love At Last"-- you have to listen VERY carefully to hear this, buried in the soundtrack as Bond makes inquiries at Strangways' club and meets Prof. Dent for the first time.
14)"Under The Mango Tree"-- vocal by Monty Norman, this is heard earlier as James follows Quarrel to Pusfella's club.
4)"Jump Up"--a really upbeat, catchy dance tune performed at Pusfella's club when James has his talk with Felix & Quarrel. Performed onscreen by Byron Lee & The Dragonaires, a band who've been around since 1956 and became a huge force in Jamaican music-- still around today!
6)"Under The Mango Tree"-- sung by Diana Coupland, this is heard on the record player at Miss Taro's house while James prepares for Prof. Dent's arrival.
13)"The Island Speaks"--the most ominous, moody bit here, heard as James & Quarrel approach Crab Key Island. This is the ONLY piece from the "orchestral" session included on the album!

The rest of the tracks do not appear in the film-- not necessarily a loss, but really... "Jamaican Rock", "Audio Bongo" and "The Is Boy Chase" (3,5,15) are more irritating than anything else (and I wonder where they were intended to go?). Several tracks are alternate versions, perhaps recorded to give the producers a choice of what to use where. These include "Jamaican Jazz", an instro. version of "Jump Up" (8), while (10) is an alternate take with a different singer & lyrics; (12) and (16) are both alternates of "Kingston Calypso", one with Diana Coupland singing and the other instrumental (the latter oddly re-named "Dr. No's Fantasy"); (9) is an instro of "Under The Mango Tree". 2 more versions of this appeared in the film, a more uptempo instro at the end of the film, and the scene on the beach where Bond meets Honey, sung by Diana Coupland (dubbing Ursula Andress) and Sean Connery himself-- but neither of these appear on the album. And why isn't it "UnderNEATH The Mango Tree" (as in the lyrics and various cover versions)?
Perhaps most intriguing are (7,11,& 17), three different versions (under 3 different names) of what may well have been the original, UNUSED "James Bond Theme". "Twisting With James" (7) would have fit at the nightclub; "Dr. No's Fantasy" (11) reminds me of something from THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN; and "The James Bond Theme" (17) could have fit well in the jungle (or somewhere in the film LIVE AND LET DIE); but NONE of the 3 versions of this catchy tune turn up in the film!

In addition to the obvious mess described above, the LP only had Norman's name listed in tiny type on the back (absurd, considering he wrote ALL the music on it); there were no credits indicating "Arranged & Orchestrated by Burt Rhodes"; "Conducted by Eric Rogers"; that track 1 was "Arranged by John Barry" and recorded by the John Barry Seven; and no listings for the vocals by Diana Coupland, Byron Lee & The Dragonaires or Monty Norman! (The latter was confirmed when I visited Norman's website; on a new recording of "Mango Tree", it's obviously the same singer!) Nor was there a credit for "Album Producer: Noel Rogers", but with all that's wrong here, I'm not surprised nobody wanted to take the blame for this!

I've just put together my own "custom" version of this from tracks on the album plus the "missing" music (with dialogue) from the movie; but I would hope that some day, someone at Eon would see to it that an "official" release like that may see the light of day!

3 out of 5 stars Dr.No Various Artists Compilation Not Soundtrack:.......2007-04-18

This Is His First Musical Director John Barry with Monty Norman..
John Barry is still musical director issued credit with James Bond Medley as arranger, conductor, and helped stir the Monty Norman/John Barry theme to music of Bond..James Bond.
This compilation of efforts not only was John Barry Director of Dr.No,but he focused on how the music played a part in the cinema at this time.
We understand Monty Norman/John Barry composed the theme in the theatre. Monty give it a rest come clean with rocky undefined tone.
John Barry is uncredited as composer.Give him credit....

4 out of 5 stars Great Companion To The Film.......2007-02-09

If your a 007 fan, and like calypso music, you will appreciate this CD. From the opening track which has one of the best "James Bond" scores, and also featuring two different versions each of "Jump Up" and "Under The Mango Tree" along with "Kingston Calypso" makes it interesting to listen to. Various movie scores, like "Audio Bongo" and "The Boys Chase" fill up the remaining tracks. This CD is Bond, James Bond.

5 out of 5 stars Still the Best Recording of the James Bond Theme.......2006-11-28

The soundtrack to DR. NO has the best recording of THE JAMES BOND THEME. The other tracks are good too full of Calypso music and some interesting compositions form Monte Norman, some of which did not make it into the film. Many of the tracks will strive to make you get up and dance. JUMP UP is a real good dance piece. Very nostalgic.

5 out of 5 stars An Ambient Masterpiece.......2006-07-09

I am a big fan of ambient music and own many albums. This is one of the few I keep returning to, it is an indispensable piece of my collection. Metcalf and Seelig have created an incredibly atmospheric soundscape that draws you into a world of deep time. This album conjures up images of the Southwest US and desert landscapes.

This is an excellent album for sleeping and if you just want to relax and read a good book. This album has a very similar sound to Mantram, by Steve Roach and Metcalf and Seelig.

WACHUMA'S WAVE is sacred music in the truest sense. It is a portal of travel, a soul retrieval, a ritual of deep time dreaming. Veteran trance percussionist Byron Metcalf teams up with German-based musician and shamanic practitioner Mark Seelig to bring forth a multi-textural blend of Bonsuri flutes, sacred chants and overtone singing, simmering percussion and other hybrid grooves, augmented by rich offerings of deep drift ambient synthesizer and didgeridoo from special guest, soundscape maestro Steve Roach. Fans of THE SERPENT'S LAIR will be thrilled by this innovative and heart-stirring alchemy.--Frank MacEowen, author of The Spiral of Memory & Belonging

Ambient explorer Roach and percussionist Metcalf originally began this as an experiment into the effects of breathwork and the use of sound on a person "as a shamanic strategy for healing, personal growth, and transformation." The successful effects their music had in group settings were extended into these compositions. While billed as a collaboration between the two men, The Serpent's Lair also features contributions by (deep breath) violinist Vicki Richards, overtone vocalist Jim Cole, pre-Hispanic sound sorcerer Jorge Reyes, singer Lena Stevens, synthesist Vidna Obmana, "groove alchemist" Vir Unis, and djembe players Jeffrey Fayman and Momodu "Mohammad" Kah. The two discs in this package act as yin and yang--the eight parts of the first disc, "The Serpent's Lair," highlight intoxicatingly hypnotic drum rhythms slicing through churning ambient spaces, while the seven cuts that make up the second disc, "Offerings from the Underworld," travel down darker, spacier streams with subtle rhythms, reverberant vocals, and exotic aerophones caressing and riding the ethereal aural waves. This invigorating combination of musicians invents a dynamic new perspective on Roach's trademark deep-listening forays. It would be wonderful to hear more collaborations like this. --Bryan Reesman

5 out of 5 stars YOU WILL BE TRANSFORMED.......2005-02-03

I bought this after reading some positive reviews on Amazon from reviewers I liked. Before buying I was a bit put off by the self-congratulatory reviews on the CD jackets; whenever someone proclaims themselve or allows someone else to proclaim them "genius" you have to wonder if they're more form over function (like Yanni, for example.)

I'm glad I went ahead and purchased this album anyway. This guy Roach is good, real good. He knows how to play with your emotions. CD #1 has more of a rhythmic trance feel (appropriate for entertaining) whereas CD #2 is far more ambient in nature (and downright spooky at times.) It's true what other reviewers write: this is the most evocative music I've ever listened to. Images and scenes will emerge in your mind. In my case, it was the wonderful scene from the movie "All the Right Stuff" where flying ambers from an Aboriginal fire floated upwards and merged with stars an astronuat in space was observing. Don't believe me about the images? Try this: close your eyes and listen to an entire song. When you open them you'll see that you need some time to adjust to your current surroundings because while your eyes were closed you were transported to an entirely different place in your mind's eye.

It wouldn't surprise me if classical minimalist composer Philip Glass has some Roach in his CD rotation. I know I'll definitely be purchasing some more of his music. I'd recommend sticking with Amazon when buying his CD's, because given the large number and differing variety he has out (I understand 3 new ones are planned for this year) you'll be disappointed by the lack of selection at record stores.

3 out of 5 stars Extreme tribal trance (for ambient music).......2003-06-21

Heavy on the tribal and trance sounds mixed with very cutting edge electronic music. A few tracks verge on nightclub electro dance music. Towards the end of cd #2 it gets very tribal on the vocals, not so much on the rhythms and sounds. Although each track is quite different, once the tune gets going, it gets repetitive as if to induce a trance. It's very good to listen to if you are working on a project or even to work out to.

5 out of 5 stars A rich and pleasing experience.......2002-04-09

I never cease to be amazed by the many ways Steve Roach can weave a web. I mean, in how many different directions can one man go with long, ambient, atmospheric pieces almost totally devoid of melody? Evidently, in more ways than I can count.

In collaboration with Byron Metcalf and a host of others, the list of which reads like a veritable Who's Who of prominent ambient musicians, Roach provides a sense of tribal mysticism with those long ethereal passages we've come to associate with his work. THE SERPENT'S LAIR is a rich blend of soothing tones, hypnotic tribal beats and some lovely vocal passages (a rarity in Roach compositions).

Although I am a huge Steve Roach fan, owning most of his CD's -I was hesitant to purchase this Disc; now I'm sorry I waited so long to buy it. My fear was an overemphasis of the percussion aspects of the compositions over the soothing atmospherics and the sense of exploration I associate with his music. (I've been disappointed with these collaborations before, namely with DUST TO DUST, an album that I've never really liked.) I need not have worried - this double CD is rich and complex, and is a brilliant example of Steve Roach's ever evolving talent. In some ways, it reminds me a bit of Michael Stearns THE LOST WORLD, another brilliant work and artist that I highly recommend.
