5 out of 5 stars Acquired Taste but a scintillating vintage none the less.......2007-07-23

Sure its takes some time to accurately decide if Nile is for you or not but in my book these guys are genuis. Beware... if you do begin to appreciate Nile and where they are coming from - you may lay waste to half your CD collection. I just have a hard time listening to anything else!

If you are into Death metal and especially if you like death growlers like Suffocation and others - you owe it to yourself to purchase every Nile CD you can find. They are just amazing. The production is just perfection and the scale of Nile CDs is just epic. Priveledged listening.

5 out of 5 stars Amongst the Catacombs of AWESOME.......2007-01-28

This is an amazing release by Nile. Although not too recent, it is still one of the best albums I have ever listened to, and I still listen to it every day. From the exciting day that I ordered it, to today, and probably a while further than tomorrow, I do, and will always, love this CD. Definetly a 5 star

5 out of 5 stars Good Lord..........2006-06-28

Nile is pure bliss. I mean, this is not just an out-of-the-ordinary death metal band. This is a band that blends death metal brutality and technicality with Egyptian themes. And they hail from South Carolina. Amazing, ain't it?

"Ramses Bringer of War" has these trumpet blasts at first, then the brutal riffage. "Smashing The Antiu" and "Serpent Headed Mask" have some of the best blastbeats ever heard, while the closer track, "Beneath Eternal Oceans of Sand" is more of an ambience track.

This is a great start for a breakthrough band. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars PURE MUSICAL GENIUS AND BRUTALITY!!!.......2006-05-01

Nile have to be the most unique death metal band ever! They combine death metal with Egyptian music! This sounds like a disaster but it's actually very cool in practice. Karl Sanders is an awesome death metal vocalist and also an awesome guitarist! His growls are very extreme and and are actually rather easy to understand unlike jokes like Mortician's Will Rahmer. His guitar work is very fast and is right up there with Slayer's Kerry King, Death's Chuck Schuldner(RIP), and Children of Bodom's Alexi Laiho in terms of bloody fast riffs. My favorite track is "Opening of the Mouth" which is probably has the best transition from Egyptian music to death metal. If you're looking for a death metal album that's different, you can't go wrong with this one!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Nile album.......2006-04-26

Nile are without a doubt, one of the fastest, heaviest, and most extreme death metal bands ever, and I love'em. They're one of my favorite death metal bands ever, and also among my top 20 favorite bands of all time. Their 1998 breakthrough album "Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka" is my favorite album from these guys. I bought this album along with "In Their Darkened Shrines" when I went down to Eau Claire over the weekend, and I've been listening to it ever since. "Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka" has all the right elements like every Nile album that you can think of: Brutal deep growling vocals, menacing guitar riffs, crazy wild solos, rampaging drums, what more do you need. Vocalist/guitarist Karl Sanders growls and roars like a gorilla on steroids, and his guitarwork on here is just flatout incredible. He just lets off a barrage of monster shredding riffs that'll tear your bare skin off, and wild solos that'll scorch your back. There's also some good bass lines from Chief Spires, and excellent drumming from Pete Hammoura (who both do backing vocals as well). This guy can do it all. Rampaging double bass kicks, lightning fast blast beats, you name it. My favorite songs on here are "Smashing the Antiu", "Ramses Bringer of War", "Barra Edinazzu", "Serpent Headed Mask", "The Howling of the Jinn", and "Beneath Eteranal Oceans of Sand". Please read on for the ratings.

5 out of 5 stars original and intelligent.......2003-11-07

This is probably my favorite Nile CD. In Their Darkened Shrines is also quite good, and is much more atmospheric than Amongst¡, but this album condenses all the raging brutality of a desert sandstorm into roughly thirty minutes, with a short, haunting interlude on the seventh track to you to collect all the tatters of your skin that were not torn away by the storm of the first six songs (well, actually songs 1,3,4,5,and 6). If you do not already know, Nile is a death metal band that takes its musical and lyrical inspirations from ancient Egyptian lore (and H.P. Lovecraft too, occasionally), which is truly a welcome change after the hordes of stagnant gore and Satan obsessed death metal bands running around screaming about severed tongues and blood sacrifices. Musically, this album is perfect. The drumming pounds your eardrums into submission yet never becomes too repetitive or predictable. The guitars are excellent, utterly devastating death metal shredding that also incorporates Egyptian influences, creating a very unique and distinct sound. The vocals are low and guttural growls which are at times indecipherable, but I have no problem with this as it always evokes an image of some infernal (Egyptian?) beast, snarling into the howling wind as it is whipped into a frenzy by the maelstrom of whirling drums and guitars. The production is great (although I¡¯m not a good judge of such things; I think the production on Emperor¡¯s In the Nightside Eclipse is great too) and the lyrics are thoughtful and intelligent, echoing the Egyptian feel of the music. A highly recommended album.

5 out of 5 stars Great Speed and Concept.......2003-04-01

This is one of those CDs that brings a lot of things to the table, in terms of Nile's type of music. They are probably one of the most original bans out there, not only with their concept of Egyptian ceremonies, gods, and legends but also there instrument work. The drums on this CD are incredible. There is no slowing down for Tony Laureano here. He is an amazing drum and percussion player and it all shows through on this album. The guitar work is awesome to. They go from shredding heavy death to what sounds like ancient Egypt chords, it crazy. Overall this CD is good, there are some points where you may say enough with the Egyptian sound incorporations and instrumentals, but donýt forget, thatýs what these guys are about. This album may to take a couple listens, to become a fan of it. But other then that it is incredible. Peace.
