Customer Reviews:
Elly Ameling now more available .......2007-03-07
I had a 33 rpm album of Elly Ameling singing Schubert lieder accompanied by piano and clarinet at times. It was one of my all time favorite albums so I have been disappointed that I have not been able to find it anywhere on CD.
Now I can just buy this excellent collection. So much music in one place! Since I confess that I am far from an expert on the rest of her records, I look forward to hearing her sing many other styles and composers.
I think it is silly to criticize her for not singing Wagner, for example, since her version of many songs, especially lieder, are nothing short of sublime. I would like to hear how many Wagnerians sing Schubert or Mozart.
I doubt if they could approach the skill and soul with which Elly Ameling sings lieder.
Delight in every note.......2006-03-10
To speak as briefly as possible about this superb collection from an equally superb singer, what can I say but that Ms Ameling possessed a voice that shone with radiant warmth and star-like shimmer? And unlike many another light lyric soprano, Elly Ameling was possessed of a very high standard of musicianship, considerable intelligence, and a sort of immediate charm that captivates the listener.
So many of her recordings have still to be released on CD, but this 5CD-set goes some way towards remedying the situation. The repertoire spans a wide variety - French mèlodies, Lieder, light-hearted "sentimental" songs, Bach, etc. - and in each piece, Ms Ameling shows that quality of pearl-like beauty. It is a beauty which is also extremely pretty - a beauty of voice that is never overbearing and over-ripe, but perfectly blossoming upon the tree of inspiration.
I recommend this set unequivocally. It truly is sheer delight.
While they last..........2005-05-17
Elly Ameling held the quiet stage for recitals of great artistry and dignity for several decades and sadly most of the enormously successful CDs of her long career output are now unavailable. For those who have little access to the documentation of this very special artist, this box set is a must. It is a compilation of many of her recordings with differing accompanists, conductors, orchestras and composers. And while not all of the choices for inclusion here would be considered her greatest moments, there are enough works that sustain the warm memories of the little Dutch hausfrau who quietly and simply paid homage to composers with her clear and intelligent musicianship and radiant voice.
Ameling was known to schedule recitals of Schubert cycles and songs and in the afterglow of her performance answer the demand for curtain calls with additional Schubert melodies: she gifted her audience with the dignity of honoring a composer's works by maintaining the focus on that composer rather than milk the audience with the usual encore applause-getting favorites. And special moments such as quietly and pensively strolling through the orchestra during the Mahler 4th symphony to arrive at front stage, unapplauded, just in time for the opening line of her singing - those simple homage to composers and collaborators made her selfless manner endearing to audiences.
Despite the fact that Ameling's voice was on the small side she was always able to muster the projection to carry her message solidly in context with an orchestra. Yes, other more famous singers have recorded Ravel's quintessentially French SHEHERAZADE, but few have the perfection of diction and aura of mystery that Ameling maintained. Whether singing with piano or orchestra, or interpreting Bach, Mozart, Handel, and Vivaldi with the same degree of involvement as Brahms and Schumann and Schubert, Elly Ameling spanned a career that engendered passionate commitment from her fans. And this boxed set is a pocket full of memories to be treasured. Buy it before this too becomes unavailable. Grady Harp, May 05
Treasures From a Treasure.......2004-09-25
Treasures from a Treasure.
Ameling, one of the world's most beloved recitalists is captured here in a 5 CD collection offering some of her most beautiful recordings of song. While we are used to her perfection in songs of Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Faure and Hahn, an added joy is her "pop" side, tackling - without a whiff of pretension, Porter, Kern, Gershwin, Ellington, et al.
What an absolute joy it is listening to this amazing artist sing these songs with an almost uncanny natural ease. There is no resorting to a "pop" voice and yet most of these pop standards songs sound as though they could have been written for her. Clean attacks, sometimes a bit of the pop technique of hanging on to a consonant longer than a classical artist normally would shows an appreciation and understanding of the style. Still, there is never once a compromise of her vocal beauty.
I like the way the songs have been arranged for her voice in that she sort of sings them clean, unaffected in the first half and then lets loose and kinda "swings" with it adding embellishments but never really changing her voice (Price, von Stade and other favorite singers of mine seem to have always added a breathy quality to much of their crossover material.)
Ameling doesn't resort to trying to "let her hair down" or get down and dirty, but rather the honest with which she approaches every one of these songs shows how much she enjoys singing them and her style is as refreshing as stumbling onto a cool spring on a sweltering summer's afternoon. A wonderful surprise.
More than fully earned praise for an exceptional singer........2003-07-15
As I had the privilige of hearing this outstanding Lied-singer during her long career in Holland and being the proud possessor of almost all her recordings, I cannot but fully agree with the professional and joyful review of Mr. Robert Holliston from Victoria, B.C. Canada.
Yes, it is unbelievable that of about the 150 recordings Mrs. Ameling made during her long career (for the greater part of course on the 'oldfashioned' LP's, as well as the innumerable Dutch live-recorded radio-concerts), so few CD's have been released.
Speaking of tradition: it was the page-turner of the Wigmore Hall in London who told Mrs. Ameling after her first recital in this hall, that she reminded him of Elisabeth Schumann. (And he certainly didn't mean her looks only!)
For those who are eager to hear her singing Ravel's Shéhérazade (just one example of stirring imagination combined with her Art of Singing) I can tell you that Philips released a 2-box CD of this work in 1999, combined with Debussy's La Damoiselle élue and a compilation of French mélodies, i.e. Debussy, Fauré, Duparc, Satie. One of the gems is Caplet's Le Corbeau et le Renard which even make children, who know the fables of La Fontaine, revel in the singing of the quarrelsome birds....
Her brilliant accompanyist is Rudolf Jansen. Let us cherish great artists in their art!

this is hell.......2007-04-18
this album is serisouly one of the best things i have ever heard in my life...
It's the "ghost" of Wes Eisold...!!.......2006-08-18
Do not hesitate, hardcore and American Nightmare/Give Up The Ghost fans, to get this album right away. The hype surrounding this album was definitely justified. While not a carbon copy of the now defunct hardcore greats, the vocals sound somewhat like Wes and the music is total hardcore with a few innovations here and there, to keep it from getting stale. People who swear by hardcore music often praise the genre for it's unrelenting sound, and boast that innovation is mostly an afterthought and not that important. No one can deny, however, that some of the greatest (Gorilla Biscuits, Judge, GUTG) are undeniably distinct and innovative in their own way. This Is Hell are on their way.
Hardcore makes a triumphant return........2006-07-21
This cd is what the hardcore scene needs to get back on it's feet. Stick To Your Guns is doing a good job of that as well.
This cd reminds me a lot of American Nightmare combined with Comeback Kid. I'm usually not a fan of this style of music, particularly because of the vocals, but Travis yells and screams, so I think that's the first thing that got me to like the cd, besides the amazing and catchy music. The guitars are melodic and catchy as hell. I got this cd a few days ago, and it hasn't left my cd player. I love it. In addition to Travis' great hardcore vocals, he does a great job of writing lyrics as well. There are a few breakdowns scattered across this cd to get the crowds moving at shows.
The only thing disappointing about this cd had nothing to do with the cd itself. It says on the front of the cover there is a coupon for a free This Is Hell t-shirt. The catch is that the coupon can only be used at "the merchandise booth or any This Is Hell performance".
Considering the only disappointing thing had nothing to do with the actual cd, this should let you, the reader, know that this cd is nothing short of amazing. It is a current favorite cd of mine. Permanence is probably my favorite song off the album, but all of the songs are amazing in their own way.
Hardcore Is Not Dead........2006-07-20
Hardcore is not dead. With hardcore bands becoming regulars on MTV, endorsement as well as major label deals, the spirit of hardcore and the do-it-yourself ethics are easily replaced with dollar signs. Self-releasing their debut EP release as well as self-booking their trek across the North America and Europe, Long Island natives, This Is Hell, return hardcore back to its glory days. The five piece's dedication and passion attracted the attention of hardcore heavyweight, Trustkill records which signed and released the bands full length debut, "Sundowning". At just under thirty minutes, "Sundowning" is as much a declaration as it is a testimony to the resilient and spirit of hardcore. Featuring hardcore stalwart and former vocalist Travis Reilly of Scraps and Heart Attacks as well as members of The Backup Plan, members of This Is Hell combine to form a sound that combines the fury and aggression of old school seminal bands Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits and Minor Threat with personal tales chronicling regret, loss and hopelessness reminiscent of American Nightmare/Give Up The Ghost. Admittingly, "This Is Hell" is not breaking any new ground but the power, passion and intensity they possess is what deserves a listen to. This intensity and passion is displayed on "Polygraph cheaters" where Reilly issues a manifest about the current state of today's music scene. Screaming for a medic and asserting "all our heroes are tragically flawed", the band's message is clear. With Converge's Dean Baltulonis behind the helm managing the recording and mixing, the other thirteen tracks on "Sundowning" display the same level of intensity. Elevating the album higher are guest appearances by Daryl Palumbo of Glassjaw/Head Automatica fame on the track "Procession Commence". Complementing the album is the stunning cover artwork of Converge's Jacob Bannon. "Sundowning" is a devastating release that will waken the heart of a "stone hearted cynic" and will be sung as the anthem of the gathering masses inside VFW halls across the nation.

James Reese Europe was a major figure in New York's African American musical community in the years leading up to World War I, collaborating with Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle and working closely with the popular dance team of Vernon and Irene Castle. With the outbreak of war, Europe formed the Hell Fighters Band, part of the African American 369th U.S. Infantry. The band returned to the U.S. to great acclaim in February 1919, and the 24 tracks heard here were recorded in New York between March 3 and May 7 of that year. Two days later, Europe was stabbed to death by a disgruntled drummer, Herbert Wright, during an intermission in a Boston concert.
Though he was a titanic figure--Europe was the first African American officer to lead men into battle and Eubie Blake called him "the savior of Negro musicians"--his fame soon turned to obscurity. In 1995, Reid Bodger's thorough biography of Europe, A Life in Ragtime, appeared, rekindling widespread interest, and the following year saw the appearance of this music on two different CDs. A large band of brass, reeds, and percussion, with vocals by Noble Sissle, Europe's orchestra plays the popular music of the day with a distinctive spirit and a marked rhythmic fluency uncommon in orchestral ragtime. W.C. Handy is prominent in the repertoire ("St. Louis Blues," "Hesitating Blues," "Memphis Blues"). The songwriting team of Europe, Blake, and Sissle ranges in their subject matter from "Jazz Baby" to the wartime experiences of "No-Man's Land." Europe's associate Tom Bethel contributed "That Moaning Trombone" with its vocal effects, while "Clarinet Marmalade" comes from the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. Despite the references to jazz, though, this is a band poised on the jazz era, not a jazz band, with improvisation mostly limited to brief "breaks." Songs from White and African American composers alike contribute to the complex representation of black life in America, one alive with both stereotypes and new possibilities.
Another edition of these recordings, James Reese Europe appeared a few months earlier on the IAJRC label with the tracks arranged in chronological order of recording rather than the pattern here, which simulates the order of one of Jim Europe's concerts. Both versions provide a worthwhile portrait of a major figure in American music; however, they also represent slightly different philosophies of sound restoration. The IAJRC preserves much of the static to avoid loss of detail; the Memphis Archive is much cleaner and generally far more listenable. The Memphis Archive edition also contains substantial supporting material, a detailed 44-page account of Europe's life and music by Tim Gracyk. --Stuart Broomer
Album Description
James Reese Europe was the world's most accomplished black bandleader before 1920. he was internationally famous as the founder of New York's Clef Club, and as music director for Vernon and Irene Castle.
During World War I, he organized and led the all-black 369th U.S. Infantry "Hell Fighters" Band. They fought in the trenches, introduced that new music "Jazz" to the Continent, and were acclaimed in France and America as the greatest-ever regimental band.
In May, 1919, the "Hell Fighters" were on the last leg of their triumphal U.S. victory concert tour when Europe was murdered at age 39. All 24 recordings he made for Pathe in the last two months of his life are collected on this CD as well as a 44 page booklet with rare photographs and liner notes.
Customer Reviews:
The transitional music mostly hints at jazz.......2000-10-26
Shortly after the IAJRC label came out with a CD reissuing all of the music recorded by James Reese Europe's unusual band during their four 1919 sessions, Memphis Archives put out a CD with the exact same material. The difference between the sets is that while IAJRC put out the material in strict chronological order, Memphis Archives instead chose to simulate a Europe concert. The liner notes of course differ greatly on these two competing sets, and the edge is given to Memphis Archives for Tim Gracyk's very extensive essay. The transitional music mostly hints at jazz but does not contain much improvisation. Europe's brand of dance music occupied its own category, including some Noble Sissle vocals, marching music, rags, waltzes, novelties and future jazz standards, and either of his sets (recorded just a short time before his murder) are recommended. Now if only Europe's eight groundbreaking titles of 1913-1914 would be reissued

Album Description
This is dark instrumental surf music. Reminiscent of classic surf artists, Dick Dale & the Del-Tones and The Ventures but with a darker modern twist. Murder On Beaver Street shifts between different styles within the surf genre. For example, the fast picking style of Dick Dale, the spaghetti western feel of Ennio Morricone, and the primitive rock and roll style of Link Wray.

Pay No Attention To The Song Titles!.......2005-09-03
Overall this is well-played instrumental surf music of a gentle nature. I have no idea where the group came up with song titles like "The Mummy's Curse," "Shallow Grave," or "Death, Death, Death." There is nothing eerie or ominous about any of it. In fact this CD could be played in the background of a quiet get-together with friends and set a very nice ambience. It is worth owning but don't buy it expecting music in the "horror surf" genre.
AWESOME!!!.......2004-06-08
This CD is great. If you are looking for a different type of music other than the same old pop music out these days, pick up this CD!!! You can feel the soul in the instruments these guys play and you WILL be caught dancing or jumping around!!! This is the best surf I have heard!!!

Another feast for Handelians.......2003-12-25
Here's another astonishing piece for all Handelians. Many of Handel's great pieces have sadly been neglected - just like many of Richard Strauss' operas which have only recently received attention from people like Botstein, Korsten and Sinopoli (deceased). Thankfully, Gardiner and his team took the trouble to record this astonishing masterpiece. I simply love this piece - Saul!! The Monteverdi choir is the best in the world - listen to their stunning virtuosity here. Thank you, Gardiner!!
Excellent music.......2003-09-14
Saul is one of those lesser known works by Handel. I certainly prefer Solomon, the Messiah or Israel in Egypt. Nevertheless, there is plenty of glorious music in Saul. The Monteverdi sings with their customary virtuosity. Casting of solo parts is superb. A bit on the pricey side but this is an investment that will yield rich dividends over a long period of time. Instead of listening to the Messiah all the time, or Solomon or Jephtha, why not be more daring and explore this lesser known work by Handel?

A Brit trio with the stripped-down, skeletal punch of The Velvets, and the fervent clang and melodic strum of the Go-Betweens. In other words, this is good stuff. More than '60s smiley pop revivalists like Oasis or Kula Shaker, My Drug Hell can mix that happy-go-lucky jangle with contempo "love has burned me again" lyrics as on the Doors-like swing of "You Were Right, I Was Wrong." It's not all glower and gloom as the lads bust out the tambourines on the catchy, "Girl at the Bus Stop" which builds like The McCoys' "Hang on Sloopy" without falling into a charging chorus; here, the girl stays at the bus stop, and vocalist Tim Briffa just keeps on walking. Briffa keeps himself at a distance, mostly moping, yet the songs bristle with edge and urgency, sometimes even breaking into a dancey, latter-day Jam/Weller groove as in "For Your Eyes." While it may sounds like My Drug Hell are all over the map, their sound is consistent and infectiously their own. --John Chandler
Customer Reviews:
A Criminally Neglected Album.......2003-12-02
I don't know if it's the 80s cover, the weird band name or the record label that makes this a relatively unknown recording, but one thing is for sure, it's no fault of the music. These tunes are FINE. Looking at the cover, you'd probably think this was either punk or something crazy like Mr. Bungle or Mighty John Henry, but it's not like that at all. This music is something very special. After my brother first played this album for me, I thought it could have been any one of a number of obscure bands from the 60s. It blew my mind when I found out this is from 1995. It has a special aura about it that only great albums have. It's seasoned just like an old favorite, but bubbling with the spices of 90s garage rock. Sometimes the music reminds of The Stones, at other times a little like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Cream often comes to mind as well. But no matter who they may remind me of, I'm sure they'll sound pleasing to you. These songs are just so inexplicably great. They're very catchy but not that poppy, and at times dark, but not overly dreary or dramatic. Everything is worked to perfection on This Is My Drug Hell. Like the other reviewers, I recommend this to everyone.
a rare gem.......2000-06-14
It is strange that an album of such brilliance has failed to see the light of day. This is my Drug Hell is one of the finest gems that I discovered. It has become a cult fave amongst my small group of friends. The album, which brings little in the way of modern sound, proves that simplicity can be a good thing. Buy it, it will remain at the top of your CD pile.
Euphoria........1998-10-12
The full sound that comes from this trio is remarkable! Tim Briffa's guitar is superb throughout the entire album. My favorite is the wa-wa and funkiness on "For Your Eyes". While most people love "Girl at the Bus Stop", the band's tale of finding love via public transportation, it by no means exemplifies the versatility of this group. "She Flies So High" is the perfect album closer, almost easing one back into the real world after giving oneself over to the band. The band also pays homage to vinyl on the CD version with the sound of a runout groove with the crackle of vinyl before the bonus track.(And a very good hidden bonus track at that!) My Drug Hell also promises an added treat for the people who purchase the vinyl version. The only thing better than listening to My Drug Hell play on this CD is seeing them live! (Which I've done!) But if they can't be in your favorite hometown venue, they should at least be in your living room. _This is My Drug Hell_ is a MUST-HAVE for anyone who appreciates great music.
