1 out of 5 stars Stay Away.......2006-01-05

While the piping is excellent, the audio, particularly in the first half of the cd is terrible. Nearly 15 minutes are almost indecipherable. I think the recording was made with a hand held mike at the edge of a field.

4 out of 5 stars Edinburgh Military Tattoo.......2001-05-19

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo first started in 1947 with some spirited displays of army piping and dancing. Since that time the show has grown to become a world class act, unfortunately losing some of its traditional elements along the way. The word "Tattoo" is a corruption of the Dutch "Doe den Taptoe" which literary means "turn off the taps", a reference to when a lone drummer would play a "tattoo" or drum roll to signal the inkeeprs to stop serving beer and to summon the troops back to barracks. This ceremony was performed by the British while they were in the low countries during the early 18th century, but it is a custom common to many armies of that time, in particular the various German princeapalities of the day. Over time the Tattoo evolved into a more elaborate affair as more bands and musicians were drawn into its fare. What we have here is the modern development of the form started in previous centuries. The Edinburgh Tattoo is justly famed for its display of massed pipes and bands, and while the recording quality here is not the best, the listener can still get a good idea of the spectacle produced. The original recording of this 1972 show was recorded by EMI, but this version is a knock-off cut that was done by a small American record firm, and which since has been sold about in various forms as a popular item. It is unfortunate that we don't have a better version of the show for listeners than this. The Tattoo produces a recording every year, as well as a video which can be obtained by contacting the Edinburgh Military Tattoo via their website which can be found using any search engine. The good thing about this recording is that it does provide a glimpse of the show in its heyday, where modern fluff and show biz influences had not crept in as much as they have today. For this reason this CD is worth having, and serves as an introduction to this great pageant of the Scottish regiments and the British army. Even though the show is watered down today with pop elements, the grandeur is still there when the massed pipes and drums march out onto the castle esplanade playing the grand old tunes. Even the politically correct producers can't ruin this grand sight, and its hoped they never will!

5 out of 5 stars Not like being there, but a good appetizer.......2000-11-23

The producers and engineers for this CD are to be commended for the remarkable quality they obtained on this outdoor recording! While not quite like being there, it does convey the spirit and energy of the Tattoo.

5 out of 5 stars Don't We Just About Have All Julie's Records On Cd?.......2006-07-13

I just got this cd in the mail. It is excellent. I have all the
EMI two-fers so as anyone can tell I am a died-in-the-wool Julie fan. I have the vinyl version of Julie, and so I am glad it was
re-mastered in the original mono.
On another note, I was reading through Julie's discography and
two more that would make a nice pair for a cd release would be,
Send For Me(1960) and Whatever Julie Wants(1961). I have never heard these but the reviews are pretty good. For a good version
of the song "Send For Me", I recommend the cd "Julie In Person At
The Americana". As for EMI's next release, how about the above
mentioned lp's. Are you listening EMI?

5 out of 5 stars Two Masterpieces on one CD.......2006-05-24

"Julie" (1957) is an upbeat album full of swinging, jazzy standards. There isn't a slow or sad track in the whole set, and Julie proves she can swing with the best of 'em. This album is comparable to many of Sinatra's swing concept albums of the '50s, and is just as good. Some of my favorite songs on this album are "Back Home in Indiana" and "All My Life." There is also an excellent, upbeat rendition of the Glen Gray hit, "For You." This would be an excellent album to play as background music at an elegant cocktail party.

"Love on the Rocks" (1963) is the exact opposite. It is a concept album which tells the story of a break-up. Julie shows her acting talent through her performances of these torch songs--the sadness conveyed in her voice feels genuine. These story albums are my favorite; Sinatra did a few, but in my opinion Julie London mastered the art. She is such a subtle singer as to not overwhelm the songs, or make them seem depressing. What makes this particular album such a standout is the selection of songs, including: "Where are You," "What's New," "A Cottage for Sale," "The End of a Love Affair," "I'll be Seeing You," "Don't Worry about Me," "The Man that Got Away," and "Willow Weep for Me." Julie's renditions of these songs are unique and among the best ever. As you can see, the song cuts are premium choices and I wouldn't be surprised if Julie had a hand in selecting the tracks herself.

Two masterpieces on one CD--and so different! The albums sound better than ever remastered on CD, too. You can't go wrong!

3 out of 5 stars A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26

These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.

I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

    Album Description

New work from master songwriter Bonnie Hayes. Touching, tragic, melancholy, humorous, ironic, literary, melodic and it ROCKS. A joyous marriage of lyric and melody in the service of the vagaries of modern life. This CD is relentlessly honest, jubilant and tragic. Includes the rocking opener "Beautiful Ideal", "Greener Grass" which may be the ultimate infidelity song, the hypnotic "Keeping the Hum Going" and the painfully comic "Money Makes You Stupid".

5 out of 5 stars This music rocks!.......2003-10-27

Once you buy Love In the Ruins, it will quickly become the soundtrack of your life. Whatever you're feeling---ecstatically angry or mesmerizingly confused---this music will match your mood.

Bonnie Hayes' songwriting style is both intelligent and amusing. Her songs are bawdy, caustic, and celebratory and her vocal range is incredible. Ms. Hayes is able to hit those high notes in one moment, then sing in a low and sultry voice the next moment.

This CD is a party waiting to happen. You should buy it---people will suddenly like you and think you're cool!!

5 out of 5 stars A serious, logical, and objective review.......2003-09-08

Lessee...What sort of strange chimera might describe Bonnie's music?...certainly some Alfred E. Neuman, what she worry: there's always some fun to be found....some Rundgren-like love of harmony and some occasional acerbic wit like, uh, John Palumbo w/Crack the Sky (there's a rare reference for you music lovers)...maybe some Steve Miller (early) for the joy of rock and some Steve Morse, not for technique, but for the love of beautifully arranged music...lots of her own bad self, flat out musical charm, chops, intelligence...and um, maybe those kids on that Star Trek episode where just the kids survived and they went bump bump on Captain Kirk's head, and surely some Peter Pan....

You can tell this music makes me happy. I like to turn it up to 11 and sing along. Don't be too surprised......

Add this one to your collection. And like the other guy said: See her and her band of merrymakers live, it's like swimming with dolphins ...

4 out of 5 stars Bright guitar rock in the Sheryl Crow-Tom Petty vein.......2003-06-25

I've been a Bonnie Hayes fan since I first heard "Shelly's Boyfriend" on the radio in 1982, and her "Good Clean Fun" album is still one of my all-time favorites. Her musical style has changed a lot from her new wave days, but she's as sharp a songwriter as Aimee Mann. I bought this CD along with new albums by other old favorites Richard Thompson and Procol Harum, and I'm enjoying this album more than the other two.

This album rocks a lot more than 1996's "Empty Sky". Bonnie's been working on her guitar playing since then; her keyboards only make a few cameos here. The result is bright California pop-tinged guitar rock in the Sheryl Crow-Tom Petty vein. There are several songs about aging without necessarily becoming mature: "I Can't Stop", "Keeping the Hum Going", and "Still Wild" ("I'm still wild -- wilder still, now that I don't have a future to kill"). The latter two are my favorite songs here, along with sort-of love song "Stealing Roses". Hayes doesn't let herself off the hook any more easily ("I am reckless and I'm greedy/And I am hungry and I'm needy") than loser lovers ("Greener Grass") and ex-lovers ("Money Makes You Stupid"). In "Everybody Wins", Hayes stresses the importance of denial. Hayes' brother Kevin is the drummer on the album, and Bonnie co-produces with Steve Savage, who's been her producer for over 20 years now.

    (1=poor 2=mediocre 3=pretty good 4=very good 5=phenomenal)

5 out of 5 stars Stunning - Bonnie Hayes is the real deal.......2003-06-02

I saw Ms Hayes last night at Sweetwater in Mill Valley. She played
for 2 1/2 hours straight and nearly caused the place to meltdown.

She did most of the songs on this album - i don't know if i have ever
seen a more outstanding songwriter / performer / band. This CD is just great.

The only thing better than this CD is to see Bonnie live.
    Don't choose - do both!!

    Amazon.com essential recording

Purcell fans will delight in this collection of 30 of his 85 secular songs. Barbara Bonney, singing with ease and controlled fervor, steals the recording with her endearing sound and impeccable musicianship. Soprano Susan Gritton brings a more dramatic perspective, singing with zest and a little edge that almost, but never quite, grates. Sometimes, however, she vibrates mildly out of control. Tenors Charles Daniels and Roger Covey-Crump sing with grace, joviality, and tenderness, but both are a little shallow throughout the bottom. Countertenor James Bowman occasionally stumbles with intonation, but always lands standing upright. This buffet of various voices captivates the listener's attention span, totally avoiding potential monotony. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

Alas, with the help of phenomenally expressive singers on this CD, Purcell has stolen my heart. I listened to this CD a few times then immediately emptied my pocketbook to the nearest consort putting on a Purcell concert. Such poverty is love.

5 out of 5 stars Too cool for some.......2005-02-22

Julianne Baird is breathtakingly good at what she does: intelligent, stylistically convincing, technically brilliant ornamentation, in a sweet, phenomenally accurate voice. I love it. Those not accustomed to this sort of thing, though, may find it lacking emotional immediacy. Consider also Kathleen Battle with some of the same material: not that she's better, but the appeal is more directly sensual rather than intellectual.

5 out of 5 stars Ethereal and Hauntingly Beautiful.......2003-11-05

How could you go wrong with the clear seraph voice of Julianne Baird accompanied by the delicate skill of Ronn McFarlane on the Lute. Not only is the talent exceptional but the composed works of Lute music divine.

You listen to each song and are carried away to time/place devoid of any worry let alone any task other than to listen to Julianne and Ronn execute perfection. You truely feel part of the Elizabethan Court listening to this CD it is both beautiful and dark simutaneously.

Another fabulous feature to this CD is the simplicity of the recording of only lute and vocals with no special effects. To retain the warmth and purity of the composition it was recorded on location in 'The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall' in Upstate New York and is one of the finest acoustical settings in the world. Unlike modern pop music Lute music as written needs no manipulation or adjustment in the studio if executed by skilled artists and musicians in an acoustical atmosphere and this recording does exactly that.

I highly recommend this CD of beautiful music. It truely will evoke deep feeling and emotion.

    5 out of 5 stars One of DCT's best........2006-06-22

Although the CD is in Japanese, the music is very enjoyable and consists of many genres: jazz, pop, latin, R&B. The lead singer, Miwa Yoshida, has a fabulous voice. It is so refreshing to hear something different than the norm. My wife owns three other DCT CDs and they are wonderful. One of them has an English version. So I await an English version of "Love Rocks". I also recommend "Funk the Peanuts"...another group featuring Miwa Yoshida.

5 out of 5 stars One of the great singing basses of the century.......1999-09-26

Mark Reizen (1895-1992) is one of the great singing basses of the century.

He was endowed with a voice of unique velvety timbre capable of the the softest pianissimos and the most powerful sounds, all seemingly effortlessly produced and supported by superior intelligence and musicality.

A giant of a man, he was almost 6ft 4in tall, and an impressive figure on stage. He was one of the best performers of the leading Musorgsky bass roles such as Boris Godunov and Dosifei from Khovanshchina.

On this CD Reizen displays his extraordinary vocal characterization qualities in major Russian roles. One of my favorites is the tremendous Song of the Viking Guest from Rimsky-Korsakov's Sadko.

In the great aria of Khan Konchak from Prince Igor, the easy "stroll" of the voice to the low F in the central section is just miraculous.

The song of Prince Gremin from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin displays great sensitivity, simplicity of phrasing and total respect for the musical line.

Reizen enjoyed a uniquely long career, his live performance of Prince Gremin on the stage of the Moscow Bolshoi Opera to celebrate his 90th birthday, still in impressive voice and physical shape has made the "Guinness Book of Records".
