"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

Not impressed.......2003-11-25

I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.

Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.

Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23

Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Not traditional American Negro spirituals mostly........2005-10-24

If you are looking for the soulfull melodic or jubilation of traditional American Negro spirituals, this is not it. But it is masterful musicianship.

Great opera, not spiritual style I thought title suggested........2005-09-08

This is a very good classical collection. The rating would have been higher if the description had suggested the actual style of the music. I am giving it 3 stars because this is a very good OPERA style collection - not the spiritual style I was hoping for. Given the title and simple instruments, I thought it would be different - more relaxed. I wish a sample of the music had been available. If you want spirituals sung in an OPERA style you will love this. She is an amazing talent.

A Glorious Burgeoning Diva!.......2005-05-07

Though this particular selection of songs may not be one the recital lover would choose, MOSAIC introduces to the recording audience the magnificent voice of Angela M. Brown, a gifted singer whose career has been nurtured by appearances with small opera companies until her highly successful Metropolitan Opera debut in 'Aida' last year. Now this intelligent singer is currently replacing the indomitable Jessye Norman in a Detroit Opera premiere and even in that vulnerable position of comparison she is making a triumphant statement.

MOSAIC is pleasant enough recital of African American Spirituals with sensitive piano and guitar accompaniment. But it is in the few unaccompanied songs that the splendor of this very large voice with a seemingly bottomless register is best displayed. Brown has a glowing top as well as a lush bottom in her register and her attention to the control of the cascade of sound is simply thrilling. Brown knows this repertoire well and is convincing in her delivery of not only the message but the depth of emotion of each song.

Hopefully a recording of songs and arias will follow soon, especially as her opera reputation grows. But for now, MOSAIC is a fine introduction to a voice whose destiny seems assured. Grady Harp, May 05

Classical music with heart and soul.......2005-03-01

Daniel Alexander Payne, sixth bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church worked tirelessly to purge emotionalism from African American modes of worship, and derided spirituals as "corn field ditties." Starting with the Fisk Jubilee Singers and into current century, composers such as Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Moses Hogan and Joseph Joubert have sought new, classical interpretations of these timeless, soulful songs.

I must confess, I've never been a big fan of classicised spirituals. Spirituals ARE emotional, expressions of unbearable pain, of longing, of optimism and ultimate belief in salvation. To strip them of that by prettying them up is to deny their very reason for being.

But having said all that: I absolutely loved MOSAIC! Angela Brown does not let her classical training get in the way of putting a song over with heart and soul. She obviously loves these songs, and her rich voice moved me to tears on several occasions. The instrumental accompaniments (Joseph Joubert on piano, Tyron Cooper on guitar) are gorgeously subtle and supportive.

The sound quality of this disc is superb, a fitting tribute to the many African American composers represented here. Highly recommended!

The following quote is a good way to introduce this album; it is from the poem "The Singer" by Eva A. Jessye. "Because of ebon skin and humble pride,The world with hatred thrust the youth aside.....And through our grief we rise to nobler things....A well of sweetness there unbidden springs." This disc portrays the talents of two wonderful musicians: Moses Hogan,excellent pianist, creator of exciting arrangements of spirituals both for solo voice and choirs AND that countertenor
Derek Ragin with his truly lovely voice capable of great vocal technique and versatility. He has appeared in several operas; two with Michael Chance that are wondrous to listen to: Tamerlano and Agippina. Spiritual are not my favorite thing, but there are some ear-catching beauties on this one;namely:"Ole Time Religion" and "Give Me Jesus". Very beautiful voice, sometimes I forget that the soloist voice is that of a male singer. Would like to hear more of Moses Hogan on keyboard and his arrangements.

Although I do not like spirituals too much, it is a must listening to this fantastic countertenor singing with Moses Hogan. For me, Derek Lee Ragin has such a brilliant voice, I never heard before in my life.

Excellent Melodic Metal.......2007-01-20

This is yet another great by Light This City. Instead of abiding by the generic metalcore formula that many bands have been doing nowadays, they make excellent melodic metal in the vein of The Black Dahlia Murder, At The Gates and Darkest Hour. The intro track "Facing The Thousand" will leave you speechless, and the crushing melodies of "Cradle For A King" and "Maddening Swarm" will make you not regret purchasing this.

If you are a fan of the modern metal scene and you want an album that won't let down, "Facing The Thousand" awaits.

The only thing keeping the latest Light This City album from a 5 star rating is a little more variation. With this being the third cd, I would have liked to have seen more experimentation. Sticking to their guns, LtC have created yet another enjoyable melodic death release. The At The Gates comparisons still apply, from Laura's vocals to the instrumental intro recalling Terminal Spirit Disease with more production value. For those new to Light This City, think At The Gates meets Darkest Hour with a (terrific) female lead singer doing the best Thomas Lindberg impression you have heard yet.

Wow... it is about time. In this age of awful At The Gates clones comes Light This City. I have to say that this disc blows me away. Is it anything new? No. Well, what makes it so special? This is classic melodic death metal played flawlessly. Take a heaping helping of At The Gates, add a splash of Darkest Hour and you have Light This City.

Drifting towards straight death metal.......2005-12-28

For those of you not familiar with this band they've recently emerged as the most faithful At The
Gates clone in metal thus far. Even though they're Americans they recreated the classic period
Gothenburg melodeath sound absolutely perfectly. But like a double-edge sword, it's both their
strength and weakness as you can't help get that been there, done that feeling when listening to
their records.

This second album finds Light This City expanding on this trademark sound by incorporating
more outside elements than you find in classic period melodeath. One you'll notice right away is
the frequent use of blast beats, almost on every song. This more aggressive approach definitely
adds a more brutal edge to the music but it comes directly at the expense of their previous more
melodic approach. And that's the other big change, the almost complete abandonment of
melodic riffs outside the core Gothenburg style of using them as the main riff. Even when they're
used as the main riff on this album it's so fast it's hard to even tell what's happening.

I can see why they went this route as they were probably tired of the At The Gates comparisons
but now they much more resemble current era death metal bands in sound and structure. That's
not to say they've turned into a totally different band as there's still plenty of great sounding
melodeath here but it's not each and every song like their last record or even the bulk of any given
song. Some fans might like this turn to a more death metal sound but for the fans that felt like At
The Gates had risen again you can't help but feel a pang of disappointment to see this new
approach.

One thing that has not changed in the least is the absolutely stellar production. If anything it's
even better. The guitars are crisp, the drums are punishing and the throat ripping vocals (by a
female!) are perfectly placed in the mix.

On the whole I think Light This City find themselves in an awkward position of not satisfying their
core traditionalist audience but not being hard enough for straight death metal. Hopefully they
stop straddling the fence on their next record so at least one camp can be pleased. I hope it's
mine!

surprise!!!.......2005-12-04

I picked this up so I could get a discount at the store I bought it at and it had kind of a cool cover. And it turned out to be a very good death metal album that features a female singer. Very nice. Couldn't tell until I read the names inside. This is some pretty refreshing stuff, what with modern metal full of breakdowns and all, this is pretty much straight ahead guitar progression and death metal vocals instead of the usual vocal styles of the day which start to sound alike after awhile. Very talented band. The lyrics are interesting at times two, almost too personal. I hope the songs about child abuse aren't the singers story, but maybe this a cathartic outlet for her. Good release and I recommend it highly.

Light This City...Straight San Francisco Thrash.......2005-08-25

If you are a fan of true metal, metal devoid of its hardcore-influenced breakdowns and simple chord progressions but glorious with assaulting guitar melodies and thrashing brutality, then Light This City is the clear choice.

Their last CD "The Hero Cycle" (which isn't available on Amazon and was independently released) was definitely a savage album. If you can, pick it up...fans of "Remains of the Gods" will appreciate the band a lot more if they can see the transformation they underwent for the new album. Instrumentation is much tighter, and Laura's voice is unleashed.

But even if you haven't heard 2003's "The Hero Cycle," this Prosthetic release will show anybody how metal is done. New metal pretty much sucks...bands like Avenged Sevenfold, Shadows Fall, etc are a disgrace. Hardcore-influenced metal bands (metalcore) come a dime a dozen and are, quite frankly, pretty awful.

But there are a few gems in the metal world today...Darkest Hour (though "Undoing Ruin" was a step down from "Hidden Hands of A Sadist Nation"), The Black Dahlia Murder, Conducting From The Grave...bands who approach thrash as it should be done. Add Light This City to the list.

I won't go into the specifics, but pretty much every song (aside from "The Hunt") is a thrill ride straight through. The kid who writes these songs knows guitar melodies and can transition flawlessly between them, the drummer can handle his dual-bass with ease, and the female vocalist is both beautiful and blessed with a growl that could bring one to tears. This CD is one of the most listenable so far of 2005, and should definitely be owned. Next time they come through your town, Light This City are not a show to be missed...anyone at the 58 Tehama St. show will know!

Long live thrash metal.... long live Light This City.

Solidly Technical, Death/Thrash METAL.......2005-06-28

Light this City differs from many of the bands they play with. For one, they should not even be associated with such bands as Unearth, because Light this City is ACTUALLY a metal band. Their music is devoid of the breakdowns, monotone shouting, and repetitive power chords of metalcore. Their entire rhythym is unique from the time signature of metalcore or hardcore. This is a purely-metal inspired band, who play metal in the tradition that envelopes all genres of metal, black, thrash, heavy, power, doom, etc. The most amazing thing is their triple chord progressions and their ability to perfectly cover an At the Gates song. This band has it all together on this album, save for a couple off-rhythm glitches and some over-repetition of melodies. Laura Nichol has an incredible amount of power in her voice. She could easily beat Angela Gossow in a screaming match. No, scratch that. She would even contest Tomas Lindberg of the original At the Gates. This is a monumental album, and I would recommend it rather to fans of Arsis, At the Gates, The Crown, Into Eternity, Necrophagist, and Slayer. Expect their next album to be a 5 star release.
