Though Dale Watson has long been a torchbearer for classic country, a throwback to the sounds of the 1960s and '70s, never before has he channeled so much inspiration from the late Johnny Cash. Recorded in Cash's cabin (since bought by Watson's actor buddy Johnny Knoxville), the songs really heavily on Cash's signature "boom-chicka-boom" rhythm, and the arrangements occasionally employ the sort of mariachi brass that evokes "Ring of Fire." Themes of life and death permeate the material. The title cut could have been a Cash outtake, while the "Runaway Train" finale pays him explicit tribute. Elsewhere, Watson changes pace by injecting some Waylon Jennings into "You Always Get What You Always Got," and lightening things up with "Hollywood Hillbilly." Watson's baritone and band are in fine form throughout. --Don McLeese

Rockin' The CRADLE Like Only He Can!.......2007-05-26
Dale Watson is strong, like steel. Dale Watson is tough, like leather. Dale Watson is deep, like a well. And Dale Watson is smooth, like silk. If you take all those attributes, and you combine them with that VOICE - that glorious, iron-wrapped-in-suede voice! - you will come up with an artist who is consistantly at the top of his game, true to both himself and his music. True, I was a LITTLE disappointed at first when it seemed as if there really wasn't anything new, be it vocally or instrumentally, on the disc, but after a few listens, I was reminded.....this is who Watson is, and this is what makes him special (Plus, if you listen closely, you do hear a few new subtle surprises, both in the vocals and the arrangements!). Things kick off with the dark, forboding "Justice For All." Even though there's a lilting quality to the instrumentation, Watson delivers such lyrics as "Revenge is mine sayith the Lord/Well he's one lucky guy" and "An eye for an eye/Would leave the whole world blind" in a somber, serious voice, only adding to the chilling - yet captivating! - aspects of the song. By the time he gets to the start of the final verse ("Don't do as i do a wiser man would say/When on a journey of revenge/Be sure to dig two graves"), Watson has completely drawn you in, won you over, and made it VERY clear you're in for a very special ride! "It's Not Over Now" is a classic country weeper, all steely vocal, smooth instrumentation and lyrics that make it clear....it doesn't get easier with time/age! "Time Without You" follows the same theme, but takes it yet one step further....here's a guy who's so miserable and alone that he just doesn't want to go on ("I curse my healthy heart for keepin'/The blood runnin' through my veins/I open my eyes each mornin' and I regret/To greet the day"). The toe-tapping arrangement may seem odd at first, but it offsets the downbeat lyrics in a unique way, resulting in a track that's sad, yet not really depressing. One of FTCTTG's high points! "Hollywood Hillbilly" is a swingin' tribute to buddy Johnny Knoxville, but it really could be about anyone who's able to stay true to themselves and who they are, even after being transplanted into a new, more alien, environment. "You Always Get What You Always Got" is another gem. Anchored by ringing guitars and a lead vocal done in a slightly deeper register, Watson makes it clear that, if you tend to repeat your mistakes over or over, you're bound to fail....and it WILL catch up to you in the end ("Life is a lesson and the lesson I've learned/Is the choice you make is going to be long term/If there's any thing brother that I can say/Is that you'll pay tomorrow for what/You do today"). Pretty powerful stuff! The disc's title track is another strong cut....it's almost as if Watson were channelling Johnny Cash, what with the deep, knowing vocal and "Ring Of Fire" vibe. Add some killer fiddle and strong lyrics ("All we really are are the memories/That we've made/And leave behind from the cradle to the grave") and you have an instant classic! "Why Oh Why Live A Lie" has a glorious melancholy to it. This is obviously a love song, but it could also be a kiss-off to a record industry that just never has seemed to know what to do with Watson ("The talk you talk ain't the walk you walk/Why oh why live a lie/The words you speak you don't really mean/Why oh why live a lie"). Add a great instrumental bridge and you have yet another winner! Maybe it's because I'm not sure what a "Yellow Mama" is, but this track of the same name is the only one from FROM..... that leaves me cold. The arrangement lopes along, and Watson is in fine voice throughout, but he's done this sort of song before, and done it better. Listen to Dale, kids....don't drink (or fall in love!).....it'll only lead to no good! There's an urgency and edginess to "Tomorrow Never Comes" that is both cryptic and mesmerizing. Part spaghetti Western, part fever dream, the song curls around you like a musical rattler. Without a doubt, one of Watson's Top Five tracks to date. Absolutely haunting, yet strangely beautiful as well! Things wrap up with "Runaway Train", an upbeat, barn-burning tribute to Johnny Cash. Blazing along, you can't help but feel the respect Watson has for the Man In Black. You also find yourself wondering if maybe, just maybe, he identifies with him a tad bit as well ("A life born torn and worn like a runaway train"). A GREAT album closer! So do yourself a favor and pick up FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE....it's one of Dale Watson's best yet, and coming from a man who's always in top form, that's saying a lot! Actually, the only (slight) complaint I have is with Dale's wardrobe....enough with the waistcoats, fancy shirts and startched pants of the last few album covers...he's starting to look like a straight-laced preacher-man! PLEASE, Dale.....let's get back to jeans, engineer boots and leather on the next album! :>) (As with all my reviews, I'm giving the disc an extra half a star for including the lyrics).
Cash rhythms, stark lyrics..........2007-05-17
Being a mental health professional myself, if a concerned third party were to show me some of Dale's lyrics on this CD I would recommend an (immediate)intervention! Much as was the case on "Every song I write is for you", there are some extremely bleak sentiments on this disc. I'm REALLY glad to hear that Dale is on an upswing personally, because he is the best country artist of his generation (and a real nice guy). I got this disc and "The Little Darlin' Sessions" on the same day. I thought I was going to prefer the other disc to this one, but this is actually far more creative and original. The sound quality is much better, and this is Dale at his creative best. I could have done with a bit less of the Cash beat that runs throughout the CD, but (given the circumstances) I understand the reason. This is easily the most instrumentally creative disc Dale has cut, and also the least honky tonk or swing influenced(if you like that style, his last disc "Whiskey or God" was probably his best since his Hightone days). As for this set, "It's not over now" is a terrific ballad, and shows some Elvis influence in the vocals. "Time without you" has some incredibly depressed lyrics ("I curse my healthy heart for keeping the blood runnin' through my veins", "I open my eyes each morning and I regret to greet the day" - ouch!), and is delivered in a decidedly non-tongue in cheek manner. Hang in there, DW! Along with the obvious nod to the Man in Black, there's a lot of Waylon's sound on the disc (particularly on "You always get what you always got", with the Ralph Mooney-esque steel and Waylon beat). "Tomorrow never comes" is bleak and haunting. On the other hand, "Hollywood hillbilly" would have been OK on another Dale CD, but seems out of place here. Every other tune is quite serious, so (as was the case on "Every song I write is for you")I think Dale should have stayed with the theme of the album. Overall, this is an interesting change of pace for Dale, and contains a few songs that will rate among his best. This may be the best true tribute to Johnny Cash that anyone has done to date, capturing the feel of the Man in Black's best work without any actual covers of Cash songs.
Short but Very Very Sweet!!.......2007-05-15
I have absolutely no doubt that the music on this CD is worth five stars - I feel it's Dale Watson's strongest collection of songs for years. But with a running time of under 27 minutes, it's easy to feel like you're not getting value for money when you buy this item at full price.
The `quality versus quantity' argument raises its head a lot when you're looking at country music, with most albums seeming to offer 10-12 tracks with a 30-40 minute running time. Take the running time any further than that and accusations start to fly about sub-standard `filler' tracks.
These 10 songs were written whilst Dale was staying in a log cabin that was once owned by Johnny Cash. They all echo the Cash sound to varying degree - opener "Justice for All" perhaps most of all, and closing track "Runaway Train" actually includes short playful references to a number of Cash's train songs as it plays out. Don't get me wrong here - it doesn't `sound' like a Johnny Cash album, it's all Watson, but it's quite clear that there's a certain amount of `paying homage' being done. It's this link to Cash which - perhaps - explains why the album isn't plumped up with a couple of other tracks: all 10 were written in a short period of time, in the same place, and almost seem to flow together.
It's too short an album to really be able to pick out favourite tracks, but "Tomorrow Never Comes" stands out to some degree simply because it's so different to what one is used to hearing from Dale. The vocals and instrumentation is superb throughout the whole album, and the use of the trombone on a number of tracks gives the proceeding a nice `full' quality.
So - five stars. Though I feel like I should remove one star to reflect the short running time, I won't, because I feel that the quality very much wins out in this case - this is a fine collection of songs that deserve to be heard together like this and the addition of songs written under other circumstances could easily spoil the effect.
Just like all the rest..........2007-05-09
and by that I mean very good. If you enjoy Dale's other releases, you'll like this one too. I won't bother repeating what some of the other reviewers have stated about the current state of country music. I imagine most people reading these reviews are somewhat familiar with Watson's music. If you're not, give him a listen. If you are, once again, Dale doesn't disappoint.
And another thing. If you ever get the opportunity to see this guy live, I highly recommend it.
What Great Modern Country Music Ought to Sound Like.......2007-05-07
This CD offers an insight into what great modern country music ought to sound like. In this collection, Dale Watson and his band draw from the influences of Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, and Lefty Frizzell to build a collection of songs that touch something deep. The songs on this CD have a heart and soul that modern country lost some years back. Watson and his band demonstrate the guts to deliver an uncompromising CD that deserves uncompromising praise.

Well here is how I see it........2006-08-03
First off, don't let this review fool you. I've been a cof fan since 1999. I love this band, they got me into Black Metal and pretty much the first stepping stone into extreme metal. However, instead of giving a cliche they sold out htis roadrunner that blah blah blah review. I think i'll put it simply like this.
Back when I was a young kid, i had a group of friends. There weren't many of us, we didn't have huge really big birthday parties or anything. We weren't popular or anything. However, we were young (friends for 5 years, from 8-13) my best friend was named Ben. ben was liked by everybody in our group. However, one day he woke up and started acting like everybody e lse, just like the popular kids. Started betraying who he really was and who he once was. He was now accepted by the masses of kids in middle school and had many new friends. However, we hated him at this point. Cradle of Filth, are sorda like Ben.

"Two out of six a good album does not make".......2005-11-26
I guess the fact that I'm not a COF fan [ MUSICALLY, they're pretty good] probably highly effects this review; but I would say that the fact I'm giving it two stars is fairly generous, all things considered! [ Note: this band's best song is and always will be Nymphetamine Fix w/ the angelic Liv Kristine! }. Anyway, here goes:
Track 1. From the Cradle to Enslave. One of the best songs I've ever heard this band do! it would be even better if lead screamer Daniel Davey just SHUT THE F@@K UP FOR TWO MINUTES AND LET THE MUSIC PLAY! it's got a cool groove and the keyboards ; I'm not exactly sure if it's Lector or Damain returning to fill an empty slot [ the band's line-up from what i've read was absolutely chaotic during the recording ]but they are definiely the highlight of the piece,; providing most of the groove; breaking down with a sudden orchestral sequence in the middle and ending with a lovely outro. And there's the kicking guitar melody line for the chorus. Davey's vocals? I generally do not like this guy's voice at all, but I suppose it fits the song.
Beautifully soaring backing vocals by Sarah Jezebal Deva definitely help matters termendously; the band should fire Davey and have Deva take over on vocals.
Track 2. Dark Blood and F**king Thee. Chaotic track that features
vocalist Davey at his most annoying; the music only grooves during the spiraling chorus where backing vocalist Sarah Deva and the swirling keyboards manage to momentarily save things. For the most part it's just noise.
Track 3. Death Comes Ripping. the Misfits version sucks [ as does the Misfits in general } and so does this one. Terrible.
Track 4. Sleepless. An Anathema cover; I actually have to say even Davey pulls through on this one for most part; mostly opting to imitate Peter Steele of Type O Negative's low vocals;
eventually the trademark Starcream vocals kick in as well as some not to audible death growls i could have done without. but the musical arrangement is great; wonderful keyboard and piano arrangements, as well as some good old fashioned old school metal guitar riffing that compliments things nicely. A kick ass number; too bad it's not their song.
Track 5. Funeral in Carpathia. The first few moments of this piece, with Davey once again imitating Peter Steele over melodic
intense guitar lines and underling melodramtic synths is cool but things quickly disintigrate into a groovless mess with Davey screeching like a scalded cat. this song is also very badly mixed; the drums sound like tin cans!
Track 6. Dawn of Eternity. According the album credits, this is another cover. Great errie keyboard intro that goes into an equally great power chord punching metal riff drenched in creepy synth; but then it goes into that rhythmless Slayer -esque sh*t with Davey doing his usual screams and death metal growls. too bad, so sad.
Bottom line: title track and the Anathema cover are really well put together enjoyable slices of metal; as for the rest....
JB Crowley

Superb Christmas Album.......2007-02-19
Mario Lanza infuses his characteristic beautiful vocal intensity into this collection of carols and Christmas songs.
The result is an outstanding album which will bring a lump to your throat and tears to your eye.
The recordings are old, but the Lanza magic makes this album a must-buy
Love Mario Lanza.......2007-01-28
I love Mario Lanza. He is in my top favs. I have wanted this album for ages and it is just as great as I knew it would be. I'll be back to buy more of Mario Lanza.
Mario Lanza - fantastic.......2007-01-15
Fantastic voice, wonderful classic Christmas songs. My all-time favourite version of O Holy Night - spine tingling.
Christmas Hymns & Carols: You Do Something to Me.......2007-01-12
Wonderful songs, great selections of songs sung by the greatest singer, Mario Lanza.
Pure hymnal power........2006-12-20
I have just spent the past six hours listening to snippets of every Christmas CD that I can find on Amazon, and this is the best by far. It's the purest rendition of the best Christmas hymns that are sung in church on Christmas Eve. No inane flourishes, no ignorant alterations, no arrogant amendments, just pure hymnal power. Don't agree? Type "christmas" in the Amazon music search box, listen to all the renditions of all the classic hymns such as "O Come All Ye Faithful" and when you are done you cannot but agree that Mario Lanza is not surpassed.
Update: I am now listening to the full CD and it is better even than I had hoped for. The beauty of Lanza's voice brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart.

Customer Reviews:
Choral perfectionists........2007-02-19
This is an essential Christmas choral CD. The program itself is fabulous and unique, lacking the tacky "favorites" found on most recordings of this type. Entirely a cappella except for two Rutter arrangements with orchestra. Not a single track is lacking in depth and sincerity.
Polyphony is one phenomenal choir. For its small size, it has truly unmatched sustaining power and control (demonstrated most astonishingly in Lauridsen's O Magnum Mysterium and the end of Howells' A Spotless Rose). The only disappointment on the entire disc is Grieg's gorgeous "Ave Maris Stella" in which, for whatever reason, the men sing with a rather unblended and even wobbly sound while the women are almost entirely straight-tone. "Sing Lullaby" by Howells is a priceless gem worth several times the cost of this CD....a powerfully haunting piece performed here to utter perfection and taste. You will also find what is most assuredly the most perfect and definitive recording of "O Magnum Mysterium" to be found anywhere. The balance and length of line this incredibly gifted ensemble achieves in this too-often-performed piece will leave you breathless.
Sublimely beautiful!.......2005-02-01
Heavenly music, beautifully captured in a location with fantastic acoustics. This is music that needs to be heard on headphones or outstanding surround sound to be really appreciated. Here I am in February still listening to this CD of Xmas music... it's very calming to the soul. I can't recommend this highly enough.

Customer Reviews:
Ever-reigning Queen of Sopranos.......2007-05-28
Listening through these two discs, one thought kept leaping up to mind: will ever there be another soprano as versatile and accomplished as Lucia Popp? Died in 1994 at the early age of 54, the operatic world hadn't really mourned her enough.
People are still lingering on Maria Callas, the 'star' soprano with all her glamour and legendary life could offer.
Real listeners, however, could not give up the memory of Lucia Popp's terrific artistry and almost supernatural voice.
Her Rusalka, her Solveig, her Susanna, Zerlina, Despina in the da Ponte/Mozart trio, her terrific Queen of the Night (unsurpassed by ANY subsequent sopranos up till now), and ALSO her Pamina in the same opera. In any language you ask her to sing, and she excelled. I marvel at the Letter Scene in Eugene Onegin - only if Lucia had the chance to perform the whole opera during her short life! The joy, the expectation, the emotional tribulations, so vividly captured in girlish and pure timbre. No one will ever beat her; not even Fleming and Netrebko.
"Weird and wonderful" - that's what Elisabeth Schwarzkopf said of Lucia Popp's singing. We today would modify it to 'wonderful and unsurpassable'.
This 2-CD set is an absolute must have, even if you have never heard of Lucia Popp before.
Lucia Popp.......2006-01-12
This is a wonderful album showcasing the very best of Lucia Popp (as the title suggests). Her voice was absolutely beautiful. She could sing the slavic languages like no one else. Her version of Dvorak's Song to the Moon is unbeatable. I dare anyone to find a better performance! Also, the song from Die Zauberflute -Ah Ich fuls (sp?) is outstanding. I've yet to hear a better version. Her diction was fantastic and while she wasn't the highest soprano around - she knew what worked for her voice. This is album is a keeper!
Lucy: The Reigning Queen of Opera.......2004-07-12
Lucia Popp is one of the best sopranos to ever grace the operatic/classical voice stage. This CD compilation shows her progression through lyric Handel to lyric and dramatic Mozart (her Der Holle Rache from Magic Flute is unrivaled) to tender art song and operetta literature. The first disc also showcases her adeptness with 20th Century literature as well as the ability to step out of the traditional four languages of opera. Any avid music fan MUST have this CD compilation.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoying The Pleasures of K. Battle & C. Parkening.......2007-05-06
Whether you are very familiar with these two artists or have never heard either one, you will delight in this musical collaboration. Only a guitarist of Christopher Parkening's stature could be the ideal accompaniment to the perfection of Kathleen Battle's voice. The music ranges from selections by John Dowland to American spirituals, Bach/Gounod, Villa-Lobos, Granados and some Spanish folk songs. The result is a coherent, soothing and utterly delightful listening experience. You will revisit this album often, and always be glad that you have it. For fans of Kathleen Battle and Christopher Parkening, I think it is a must.
Great blending of the talents of two top-notch artists in their respective fields. Parkening on the guitar and Battle singing........2006-01-31
We always enjoyed seeing and hearing Battle in concerts, usually on the television and Parkening has been a favorite guitarist. To listen to these two fine artists in concert is a real treat.
Superb technique, emotionally flat, but enjoyable even so........2005-05-25
I can't imagine these songs being performed with any greater technical brilliance than they are by Parkening and Battle on this CD. Both are virtuosos, him in the guitar, her the voice. Their skill is particularly apparent in the Dowland songs, the "Ave Maria", and the Bachianas brasileiras no. 5 (for me, the high point of the recording), which are all in a formal style well suited to the talents of the performers.
I compare the Brazilian songs to the version recorded by Salli Terri with Laurindo Almeida in the late '50's on "Duets with Spanish Guitar", which I have listened to repeatedly since I first heard it in 1959. Battle's phrasing, enunciation, and vocal skill are far superior to Terri's, but Terri brought a level of emotion to her singing that Battle seems to lack. Where Battle's perfection enhances her superb performances of the Dowland and Villa-Lobos pieces, it seems to detract from her performance of the Brazilian folk pieces.
I find this to be true again in the spirituals - vocal perfection and control detracting from the "soul" required to bring out the "spiritual" feeling. Imagine these same pieces sung by Mahalia Jackson or Aretha Franklin and you'll understand my point.
Parkening's performance has the same quality - technical virtuosity, especially noticeable in his lute-like technique in the Dowland solo - but lacking in emotional depth.
The classical selections are highly recommended, the folk pieces a bit disappointing, but overall an enjoyable recording.
ONE OF MY FAVOURITES.......2004-03-19
THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BATTLE ALBUMS, HER SWEET VOICE IS ACCOMPAINED BY THE GUITAR VIRTUOSO CHRISTOPHER PARKENING, TOGETHER CREATE A TENDER, DELIGHTFUL & BEAUTIFUL LISTENING EXPERIENCE. BACHIANAS BRASILEIRAS N- 5 HAS IT`S BEST PERFORMANCE IN THIS CD.
Fans will be delighted!.......2003-08-25
Fans, maybe, but I must say I'm not a huge fan of Kathleen Battle or opera or songs in different languages, either. My mom is, though. And through her I have heard Kathleen's best. And her very best (if you ask me) is one of the tracks ON THIS CD titled "Ain't that good news," even though it should be called "Ain'ta dat good news," since that is how its sung. It is a really good song (ask anybody) with a little surprise high-note at the end. If I were you I would (if not buy this CD right here and now) then go to [a book store] and see if their computers will let you hear "Ain't that good news" because that song is great.

From a music lover, not a critic.......2007-04-10
Many of these performances are new to me. That is the beauty of being 59 years old and still learning. My knowledge of classical music is based on what moves me. While others talk about all the other versions and other conductors, I just want to let other people know that these recordings give me great pleasure. While some may find Michel Beroff to be less than adequate, I enjoy his renditions of the piano concertos. I have heard other renditions and find that they all have their places. These concertos move me a great deal. That is my only criteria.
Masur - Champion of Liszt.......2003-12-19
Before he became the embattled leader of the New York Philharmonic, Kurt Masur made a name for himself by making brilliant recordings with the Gewandhaus-Orchester Leipzig, these Liszt Orchestral Works foremost among them. It is delightful to have these recordings in print again, and for them all to be collected on seven discs in an inch-thick paper box set is even better. Masur's performances of the "Tone Poems" in particular rank among the best of all-time, along with Haitink and Golovanov in my opinion (see my review of the latter on his "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" title). Also included in this set are the works for Piano and Orchestra, and while Michel Beroff's renditions don't quite measure up to my favorite accounts by Arrau, Cliburn, Janis, Katchen, Richter or Zimerman, they are certainly first-rate. Oddly, my only complaint is that EMI seems to have taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" box are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves.

There was nothing like the Robeson sound, ever. To describe his deep, rich, perfectly equalized instrument is futile. Go instead to "Balm in Gilead," the opening track, and see if you can listen to the last pianissimo phrase without falling to pieces. Robeson was at his best when the music was slow and the words contained spiritual or social messages. Faster, lighter fare like Kern's "I Still Suits Me" or Gershwin's "It Ain't Necessarily So" find the serious-minded singer out of his element, lacking irony and swing. "Old Man River," though, gets a simple, dignified treatment. It's Songs of Free Men, though, that will just keep Robeson's artistry rolling along, especially in Sony's astonishing transfers. --Jed Distler

Robeson on wax.......2007-06-19
I found this album in a thrift store last week, for a couple of dollars. It's the original pressing on four 78 RPM records, in a gatefold format. It's in pristine condition. I really bought it for the incredible cover art, although I hope to be able to listen to it in this format at some point.
The voice, the sound quality and the interpretation.......2004-09-24
Put this on your stereo and if it is good enough the depth and richness of Robeson's voice will make your fillings rattle and your chest rumble. The power of his voice is awesome. This CD is superbly recorded with no audible noise at normal listening levels.
A Voice from the 40s, often dated, often moving.......2002-09-01
"Red diaper babies" have greeted this disc with nostalgic joy, and it captures a time and an aesthetic and a political belief with precision. Anyone interested in the emotional life of the pro-Soviet left of the 1940s should buy this disc. It's something like Henry Wallace set to music. There is much more to Robeson than that, however, and Sony has given us Robeson whole: there are songs by American masters of the musical, there are labor songs, religious songs, as well as the kind of faux-folk songs which the butcher supreme Josef Stalin encouraged and which were not taken seriously inside the USSR (except at gunpoint!!) but which were taken up by dupes around the world. This is Robeson at his least savory - willing propagandist for a vile mass murderer. Songs such as "Native Land" (fittingly, Robeson is referring to the Soviet Union) and the Red Army song are the equivalent of the "Horst Wessel Song", anthems of murder, and it is difficult to listen to the worst of them without retching. On the other hand, Robeson's commitment to American folk culture was real. "Balm in Gilead" is deeply beautiful; "John Henry" is heroic; "By an' By" is both resigned yet hopeful. "Joe Hill" captures an era in labor history. Anyone interested in American popular song should hear these. Turning to Broadway, his "Old Man River" is very fine, though Robeson changed the lyrics for political reasons and Leonard Warren has done the song better. I disagree with the editorial reviewer: "I Still Suits Me" is wonderfully playful and shows Robeson using his gorgeously rich voice to tease and poke fun. However, Marc Blitzstein's "Purest Kind of a Guy" is beyond saving - another example of Robeson recording an unworthy song by a political fellow-traveller. Ugh. But for every miss there are two hits. Robeson performs Mendelssohn's Elijah with nobility, and sings his favorite song, "Water Boy", with joyous pride: "There ain't no hammer that's on these mountains that rings like mine, boys, that rings like mine."
No one need have any fears about the mono sound quality. The orchestra in the second half of the program is at times a little dwarfed by Robeson's voice, but it generally sounds clean and colorful, and the great artist's voice rings like no other.
Robeson at his best.......2000-05-12
It's hard to believe that most of these recordings pre-date the advent of magnetic tape: the CD transfer is superlative. The songs and performance are beyond reproach. Notable is the imaginative packaging in miniature 'record album' format, complete with the original cover art, and a replica of the original Columbia record label applied to the CD.
In response to a previous question: Robeson's performance of Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) can be found on the Vanguard LP entitled "Robeson" (VRS-9037).
some of the greatest songs of the last century.......2000-05-05
In the 1940s, before rabid McCarthyism and racism had taken its toll on him, Robeson made these wonderful recordings of spirituals, classics and pop tunes. Accompanied by the solo piano of the incomparable Lawrence Brown, or by an orchestra, the songs ring out with pride, dignity, skill and unmatched integrity. The shameful treatment that Robeson was subject to from American authorities certainly seem grotesquely absurd to a modern listener. The wonderful version of "The House I Live In" included on this cd should forever kill off any suspicion that Robeson did not love his country deeply. This album ought to be heard by millions of people, world wide. Robeson's voice is nothing less than a glorious high point in 20th century music, and it's hard to think of any recording capturing it to greater advantage.

Canadian Bagpipes American Brass.......2003-11-11
I recently ordered and have just received the above mentioned album.
THANK YOU........
I ordered it just to have a copy of "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes, but after listening to the album, I am completely blown away. It is perhaps the greatest piece of music I now own. Depending on the song, I can get lifted up, mellowed out, or layed back, again THANK YOU, for having this album. I'm a very satisfied customer.
Not a Great CD.......2003-11-07
This CD was originally longer with more titles. It seems the Altissimo! people after they acquired it from the Canadian Scottish cut out several titles and reduced the overall quality of the CD. Because of this and various other technical factors I would not recommend this CD at this inflated price.
