Just as adult authors from Isabel Allende to Clive Barker are writing kids' books these days, rock & roll artists (remember Jerry Garcia and David Grisman's 1993 recording Not for Kids Only?) are reaching out to the younger set. Thank goodness, we say... and scoot over, Barney. Festival Five Records is the children's music label founded by Dan Zanes, former lead singer of the Del Fuegos, where he hopes to capture "the sound of a neighborhood band on the front stoop playing tunes after dinner for a family dance." His third CD release, Night Time! ("a musical cool-down disc for all ages underground"), comes on the heels of Rocket Ship Beach and Family Dance. Here, traditional tunes such as the West Indian sea shanty "Pay Me My Money Down" and the African American folk song "Down by the Riverside" take their place next to folksy, hypnotic Zanes originals, including "Night Owl," "Firefly," and "Linger for Awhile," a song aimed to reflect Brooklyn stoop life. Mandolins, harmonicas, trombones, fiddles, electric guitars (and more!) add to the contagious buoyancy of this eclectic 16-track CD. Our favorite is "Rattlin' Bog," a delightfully nonsensical cumulative song, led by Father Goose and featuring the kids in the Dandelion Chorus. As in his other CDs, Zanes invites friends and family to join the fun, along with heavy-hitters such as Aimee Mann, Lou Reed, and Dar Williams. This irresistible collection, appealing to toddlers and easy on their parents, is packaged in a colorful board book illustrated by Donald Saaf with starry scenes of moonlit music making. An excellent addition to any children's music library. --Karin Snelson

Different from House Party.......2007-05-14
I ordered this CD along with Dan Zanes House Party CD. My daughter loves the fun songs from the House Party CD better than the Night Time CD. I can't get her to listen to the slow songs on this cd although I really enjoy them.
We love this cd.......2007-02-11
This is in our babies room. Each night when we get ready for bed we listen to this cd. It winds her down a little and makes diaper changing a little more easier for us.
children's music.......2006-10-29
This music is mainly for children but some adults will find something to like about it, too. The music is diverse and creative. Children are sure to like it if you play it for them. Of course, it's hard getting children to listen to music if they don't want to, but give it time and I'm sure they will enjoy this collection of songs.
great music!.......2006-08-05
Our 22 mo. old loves this music much more than the kiddy tunes that mom and dad can hardly bear to listen to.
Dan Zanes Nightime is "Happy Music".......2006-07-27
I was introduced to the Dan Zanes Nightime CD while I was visiting my 3 1/2 year old grandson. He listens to it everynight before going to sleep with "Pay Me You Owe Me" being his single favorite song. I fell in love with the CD because each time I play it I can vividly recall the pleasure it gave us both. The choice of songs on the CD gives all ages something to remember and before you know it you will be singing and dancing along with the music.

Awesome - as expected.......2006-07-18
While this new album is not as good as the other two, expect to hear more of M's awesome vocals, Mike's raw guitar, Gabe's fantastic drumming, and Jay's debut album with the band. The album does not seem to have as much drive and ambition as its predecessors, its still fun to rock out to.
not as good as the older stuff.......2005-10-18
I usually don;t listen to a lot of punk rock. But a friend turned me on to Tsunami Bomb and we saw 'em live at this little dive bar near me. I became a fan, and i think that the lead singer Agent M is totally sweet.
Anyhow, i was excited as hell when I found this album. But as I listened to it, I didn't get into it as much. Something about the earlier ones was really catchy, sing along stuff..this album doesn;t have as much of that. It's still good, and I do really like the song 'Being Alright' (which is real positive), but the rest just felt less polished or structured to me. I still recommend it for punk fans, tho.
better than "the ultimate escape"........2005-10-10
when I first heard "20 going on.." from "the ultimate escape", I knew I had to get to know this band. From that CD, there were some awesome songs in the vein of "20 going on..", but also a couple fillers. With the definitive act, TB has done away with the fillers and put out an album where you can listen to every song with skipping tracks. this band is very unique because their lead singer is a girl and she has a better vocal range than most of the guys in her genre. this is great stuff, and if you liked "the ultimate escape", you'll LOVE definitive act. they just keep getting better!
mindblowing, a must for anyone with a pulse.......2005-08-21
I stumbled upon Tsunami bomb's first record "the ultimate escape" at a local music store last year, and after hearing 20 going on... (which left me floored), I bought the record. It was simply amazing. To make a better record than "the ultimate escape" seemed impossible to me, but a year later TB arrived with "Definitive act", which could almost be, dare I say, better? If you like music, you must hear Agent M's killer vocals combined with TB's signature dark melody. it's freakin' spine-chilling man! I can't imagine my life without tsunami bomb in it. I can't wait until they come to my town! Please, PLEASE find someway to get both of their records. they'll change your f**king life!!! Highly, HIGHLY advised for purchase.
Transcending the Harder Elements of Rock.......2005-05-23
I know there are people out there that hate punk, dismissing it as childish and immature or simply dont put the effort into hearing some of the better bands instead of just generalizing the whole genre from the bands the media markets like to force down peoples eardrums. But as someone who loves every variety of music out there, to the uninitiated Tsunami Bomb is an excellent punk rock band with one of the best female vocalists I've heard this side of R&B, Gwen Stefani has nothing on her. When she does her solo accapella's and then right after comes a nice whiff of guitar and beatwork it will get you two looks everytime you're stopped at an intersection, first WTF then the second time around "hey thats pretty good, who is that?"
I was in the record store today and was getting pretty frustrated that they didnt have anything I was looking for but when I picked up this album 'The Definitive Act' used I thought I would give it a go since I loved their first cd 'The Enemy Within..' that I picked up way back. On my way to work, not even having the volume at very high, I was simply blown away by the first two songs, very addicting punk melodies. I came to find out nothing on this cd is horrible, there might be some subpar songs but they are certainly listenable and far from annoying. In my opinion 'A Lonely Chord' is the pick of the litter, coming off with a modern style beat of old school big city jazz infused with melodic guitar riffs and of course Agent M's ever so highlighting voice orchestrating it altogether. They have more of a poppish feel to their music on this then previous albums, not radio friendly just something thats more appealing to the ear then a good majority of the punk bands out there.
Normally I dont recommend music to others since everyone has such a pathetic undertaste for dismissing certain bands/groups/singers for not being their type of music. But I would think their style transcends, at the very least, all of the harder elements of rock. If you like Metal, Hard Rock, Punk Rock, or anything with a nice attitude to it I would definately recommend Tsunami Bomb to you.

Customer Reviews:
We love mr. Ray!.......2007-03-27
This is a wonderful CD for kids, because it is one that parents will enjoy listening to as well. mr. Ray is a former rocker who played with Meatloaf and others -- and definitely can sing. We have all of the mr. Ray albums and it's hard to choose which is better. What I love about Songs from the Kids' Lounge is how catchy the songs are and there are very good messages dispersed throughout the songs -- especially about respect and inclusion. My pre-schooler learned the order of the days of the week from the song with the same title, and for the first time ever, mr. Ray has inspired my usually shy daughter to sing loud and strong -- and even attempt "writing" a few of her own songs. IMPORTANT NOTE: Don't be gouged by high-priced sellers -- this CD should be available at Amazon for a reasonable price. And if not here, be sure to check out mr. Ray's website for CDs and other merchandise.
Mr. Ray Rocks!.......2007-01-19
I purchased this CD for my 3 year old son and he loves it! The lyrics are catchy and the music is fun - I find myself singing along to the CD in the car! If you are going to be forced by your toddler to listen to his music under the threat of a tantrum, this is a whole lot better than "Old MacDonald".
Great for the kids, Great for the parents too.......2005-05-29
Considering that Mr. Ray lives nearby and gives a free concert locally on a regular basis, we were quite familiar with Mr. Ray's music. We purchase his first CD and loved it. So, for Christmas this year, Santa put this CD, Mr. Ray's second outing called "Songs from the Kids' Lounge" in my son's stocking. My son was very addicted to listening to the first CD that he didn't play it right away. Every night we have "Mr. Ray" time, where he's brought to his room to dance and jump and get those last bits of energy out before taking his bath and going to bed, and he always insists on putting on Mr. Ray music.
Well, he finally started playing this second album, and I have to say, having heard all the songs EVERY NIGHT for the last few months, I actually like this better than the first one. Why? The music itself actually sounds more sophisticated, which is a good thing. Mr. Ray has written on his website that he wanted to make sure that his next album was something that everyone could enjoy, because he knows that parents listen too. And I DO listen. The music definitely shows his major influences, like the Beatles or Carole King, as well as some others. Just about every tune you could rewrite the words, and they'd easily be a song that you'd hear on mainstream radio. But instead, Mr. Ray talks about things that apply to all kids, like being nice to kids who are different, encouraging others to do well with a high five, learning the days of the week, etc. But he has some fun, silly songs too. One of our favorites is the "UM song", which is about when you can't think of something to say, you usually say, "um....". This seems especially appropriate for my son, as he actually has a speech impairment and says that a lot. But it's a way of poking fun at ourselves that we all do it, and for my son, he sees it's okay. He's actually learned the words, which is exciting for us, and he knows the words to all the Mr. Ray songs.
If you want to get a good CD that everyone can listen to, that won't make you, as a parent, say, "Man, that CD is annoying!", you've gotta get this one, because it's SOOOOO listenable for everyone, and it's just plain good music!

Album Description
Serene waves of crystal bowl tones echo the beautiful musical harmonies of the constellations that Pythagoras called the 'Music of the Spheres'. CHORDS OF THE COSMOS fine tunes our entire body to the musical order of the universe with a deeply healing sound journey around the zodiac wheel. This first-of-its-kind recording provides a new level of therapeutic sound with harmonic chords for each astrological sign. It facilitates the alignment and balancing of the chakras and the auric field. The perfect healing companion for meditation, joy, massage and all healing arts.
"Deborah Van Dyke is a beautiful woman with a beautiful soul. Chords of the Cosmos is a set of 12 deep overtone compositions tuned to the signs of the zodiac and Pythagorean progression. Each piece is designed for Chakra meditation to balance a specific body part. Meditation with this CD aligns listeners with the resonance of the cosmos.
This disc is pure overtone bliss. Deborah's techniques on the bowls are flawless. There is no need for looping, layering and/or processing. The bowls' natural overtone properties simulate those effects and stimulate introspection, relaxation and healing. Deep listening is a wonderful experience. It allows listeners to go to their "happy places" for ultimate relaxation.
This is a special CD from a special lady. It is the overtone CD among overtone CDs." Jim Brenholts, Music Reviewer
Customer Reviews:
I liked it, but this is not for everyone!.......2004-12-30
I have done exercises of toning in the past with Quigong, and this was very similar for me. I found the tones beautiful and melodic, and simply that, sustained and harmonized tones. If that is what you are looking for, then yes, you may indeed enjoy this. While I don't know whether the cords used are balancing for the zodiac or of the areas mentioned, I do know that I liked the meditative properties of the drawn out harmonies for myself.
This album though, is not for everyone. The pieces here might be compared to the musical sounds made by a harmony of fine crystal glassware at dinner. For some people this style of sounding may be annoying at best, and unpleasant at worst. If you are looking for clear crystal harmonics, you may very well enjoy this CD. If, however you are looking for soothing, musical composition I suggest checking out some Dean Evenson and passing on the Crystal Bowls.
My advice: always listen to a few of the provided samples first. That is what they're there for!
each tract a meditation.......2004-08-16
I think that Chords of the Cosmos is a wonderful resource for anyone seeking sustained meditative work. I also study astrology and enjoy selecting sequences of the different tracts to 'tune in' to the various notes revealed for each sign or season, what a great way to open one's consciousness to the subtle music of creation! And because a whole tract is dedicated to each zodiacal sign, one can create meditative 'sessions', such as for the four elements, the three qualities, or any array thereof.
Another example would be to arrange or program the tracts into the Chaldean order of planets (based on the signs that each planet occupies within one's own horoscope) to feel the flow of harmony or changes from the Sun to Mercury and Venus to Earth (the sign opposing the 'Sun Sign'), followed by a rendezvous in the sign of the Moon... then meditatively guide one's consciousness outward through Mars to Jupiter and Saturn using the harmonies of these signs of the Zodiac. As the Sun is the "heart" of our solar system model, this meditation could be considered a "heart-centered" approach for guiding the flow of consciousness from the source of light and warmth and then outward through each planet... and back again!.
The chord arrangements for each sign are beautiful, each tract is a meditation in itself!
I've read how Pythagorus studied number and notes with his monochord, how Einstein would play his violin for inspiration while solving his equations. _Chords of the Cosmos_ makes it possible to engage in similar meditative journeys, the possibilities are endless. With this gift one can literally craft their own meditative vehicle through the beautiful vibrancy of the crystal bowls, played in layers of harmony to resonate with the seasons of time.
EXPLORING INNER SPACE.......2004-08-06
Pythagoras, Rudolph Steiner and other leaders in the field of consciousness have all talked of the connectivity between outer space and inner space, the macrocosm/the microcosm. Chords of the Cosmos is unique in its use of musical triad chords created with crystal bowl tones, that mirror the tones of the constellations.
Make no mistake, this is a seriously therapeutic CD, not intended for mere listening pleasure, although the serene, perfectly tuned chords are beautiful indeed to hear. But there is much more to this CD, that, to the uninitiated ear, may not be appreciated on first listen. Anyone interested in deepening their meditative experience will find immense value in using this CD to fine-tune their body instrument. And the more one works with it, the further one goes. Within the first five minutes I slip into alpha state and thereafter, far beyond.......
Chords of the Cosmos creates a bridge of tonal sounds that enable you to experience the subtle fields of energy of the constellations, while simultaneously accessing the deeper fields within your inner space. A remarkable tool for higher consciousness and healing!
Should have listened for myself before purchasing.......2004-05-18
Should have listened for myself before purchasing the special price package. Traveling The Sacred Sound Current is pleasant and Chords of the Cosmos drives me and others who heard it... nuts.
WONDERFUL CD.......2004-01-02
I do listen to this recording at least once a day - sometimes with headphones, sometimes I just let it play in the background. When I listen to it with headphones, I feel the sounds reverberating first in my head and then spreading throughout the rest of my body, re-arranging, harmonizing and aligning my energy field and by body from the top of my head, all the way to the tips of my toes. Then, I feel ready to embrace the day, balanced, nourished, strengthened.

Don "Not Retired Anymore" Dixon.......2006-12-06
I too live in suburban Washington, and have seen Dixon nearly every time he's played here (9:30 Club, Birchmere, Lisner Auditorium, even the Rams Head in Annapolis). It was Weasel who introduced the show referenced above. Also, the FM station referred to above had just moved to 99.1 from 102.3 when Dixon's record on Enigma was released (Most of the Girls LTD). Enough with the pointless flashbacks. Didn't anyone read the liner notes on this CD? Dixon states that he had basically given up on song writing, lyrics in particular. He got sucked into it by his 'middle daughter', who needed something for a dance school performance. He sent her in with some acoustic stuff without lyrics, only to find out that the instructor wanted things like "Southside Girl", much to his dismay. So he went back and wrote most of which became this album. Yes, there is a concept here (rooms), but the material is all quite good. And the inclusion of Mitch Easter's "Room With A View", sung by Marti, was an unexpected surprise. Easter and Dixon have worked together for years, and in fact, Easter appears on this record. Dixon has always, at least to me, appeared like North Carolina's version of Nick Lowe, even down to being a bass player. His lyrics are crisp, sometimes gloomy, but always carrying a hint of sardonic irony. This album seems a bit melancholy, but is still enjoyable. It's good to see Dixon back on the scene. If you're a Dixon fan, you'll enjoy it. Or should, anyway.
The Entire Combustible Dixon.......2006-07-09
For the last several decades there have been an ever increasing amount of things to love about Don Dixon. As life has pushed, pulled, ebbed and flowed Mr. Dixon's life, it has always created in its wake insightful, interesting and enjoyable music. The Entire Combustible World In One Small Room is no exception.
From the first track `In Darkness Found' there is a tone of cool, wit, and style that is uniquely Don Dixon. He has the ability to line up the moon and stars in a way that makes you want to put on the headphones and just drink it all in.
The fact of the matter is that Don Dixon knows how to make cool records. Cool in the sense that if you take the 43 minutes and 20 seconds to listen to the whole record you feel like you taken an interesting little trip or spent some time with an old friend.
There's no stinkers and on the 2nd listen, standouts are In Darkness Found, Secret Room, In A Politician's Bed and Ten Part Peal.
If you are someone who is persuaded by reviews, pull the trigger on this one.

Welcome back Don Dixon.......2006-06-20
As a long time fan of both Don Dixon and his beautiful bride, Marti Jones, I welcomed the sight of this new release from Don Dixon. I discovered Don Dixon and Marti Jones during the mid 80s by hearing their songs on a local radio station (WHFS 99.1 FM in Maryland). The DJs on WHFS, Weasel (aka Jonathan Gilbert) and Damien Einstein would play cuts from Marti Jones' "Unsophisticated Time" A&M records LP and Don Dixon's "All of the Girls..." indie release(s). Does anyone remember "Praying Mantis" or "Follow You All Over the World"? I still own those two cherished vinyl records!
I had the pleasure of seeing Don and Marti at the old 9:30 club in downtown DC in the summer of 1986. What a show! Don and Marti played all their great songs from the aforementioned LPs. Quite a show and I believe either the WHFS DJ Weasel or DJ Damien did the introductions to the show....can't remember which one...oh well, had a great time at the show.
So, enough of the history of Marti and Don's airplay and concerts in the Washington DC area...what about this new CD? I like it very much. The CD has a theme all about various rooms (a church, a dorm, an ICU, etc.) and works very well from a conceptual standpoint. Don's lyrics/singing and the arrangements/production conjure up a different feeling for each song (room).
Don's soulful singing voice has aged well and he appears to enjoy singing these songs! Marti Jones also sounds great on the final cut (a cover) singing Let's Active's "Room With a View."
Welcome back Don Dixon! Hope to see Don in the Washington DC area if he tours to support the new CD.
I highly recommend this CD

Customer Reviews:
My kids' favorite Jewish music tape -- and mine too!.......1998-06-15
Craig and Co.'s CD, "My Jewish Discovery" delights us every time we listen to it. I have worn out and scratched my original copy and am ordering another. My second grader likes it and my fifth grader loves it. The music is not traditional songs you know, but new songs, each in a different musical style, from zydeco to rock to rap. My only criticism is a track or two of talking by a famous Yiddish actor. It's okay once, but we don't need to listen to it over and over. The Chanukah rap song, "Go Judah" is our absolute favorite.

Customer Reviews:
Well it is a Good Collection of Brit-Punk..........2004-06-04
Unfortunately the person that put together this 'entire' history of punk did not do his homoework. He did a fantastic job of finding every early 80s Brit-Punk (I know there are other bands but not that many.)band but forgot every other region and time period in which punk had existed. Thus at bes tthe title is a misnomer and at worst it is a blatant lie. Basically what this collection is analogous to is a student who used only one book on his term paper and claimed that he knows everything that there may be on the selected topic.
As exhaustive as the collection may seem, it still does not manage to give us every single Brit-Punk band forgetting quite a few of the lesser ones and some of the greater ones such as Deadmans Shadow, the Sex Aids, and Red Alert I think are missing.
All of this is ok of course if it were not for the random arrangement of the songs. The songs are not arranged either chronologically nor alphebetically. What this means for the listener is that if he is not familiar with any given band he will have to refer back to the booklet because he will have no way of finding out just by guessing as it is like poking a needle in a haystack. Furthermore the collection misses Germany and Sweden and Finalnd completely, and stops the history of punk in the early 80s.
There is plenty of music on this collection however it could have not only been better arranged but more could have been included. Plus the price is rather bad.
A Selected History.......2002-11-25
The title is over the top but what the hell. I've heard a lot of complaints about this collection, especially concerning the quality and the bands that are missing. But, on the plus side, there are a lot of bands contained on this collection. If you are an old punk then it will be good to remember a lot of bands you had forgotten. Even the stuff you didn't like! If you were not around at the time then you get a good picture of what it was all about, not just the highlights. The company obviously could not afford to buy the rights to everything so they have had to rely on some dodgy bootleg live stuff - but that adds rather than detracts from the charm (if charm is the word).
Flawed but exhaustive study of punk..........2001-09-07
This set is a lot of bang for the buck. About 300 mostly forgotten songs on twenty jam-packed CD's. But the sound quality is very poor. It sounds better on bad stereo equipment. Maybe that's ideal for any punk set. The booklet is sketchy and contains no information beyond song titles. I even wonder if the company that put this out legally licensed all this music. That said, I have it at my office and it's cool listening.
