It's good to see the Demon albums getting the remaster treatment. The certainly deserve it. Demon was always one of the more underrated NWOBHM bands - come to think of it, aside from Maiden, Priest and a few others, they were all pretty much underrated.

Heart of Our Time, originally released in 1985, was Demon's fifth album, and if not necessarily a classic like Night of the Demon or the Unexpected Guest, it is still a quality release. It has less of the straight-ahead heavy metal sound, instead leaning more towards melodic hard rock, sounding very much like the Uriah Heep albums of that era. Demon appears to have chosen a more mature sound over an aggressive one. I can't see this album appealing to the die-hard metal fans, though AOR and classic rock fans should enjoy Heart of Our Time quite a bit.

Dead Ringer's 2003 reissue of the Heart of Our Time provides a much needed upgrade. The remastered sound breathes new life into the album, though the bonus tracks - 2 alternate mixes of Dave Hill solo songs - don't add much. The liner notes could have been better too. The lyrics are printed inside, along with a very brief note from Dave Hill. Some additional artwork, photos, or commentary (see Castle's excellent Uriah Heep reissues) would have been a nice touch.

If you're a metal fan, particularly a classic metal fan, and haven't heard Demon, I highly recommend checking them out, though Heart of Our Time is perhaps not the best album to start with. Instead I'd recommend Night of the Demon or the Unexpected Guest.If you're already familiar with the band and are wondering whether to pick up the reissues, I'd recommend doing so since these remasters sound terrific.

    Red Rivers has penned most of the titles on this Album and has been able to express his multi-talents by both singing and playing lead guitar in that old time genuine rock'n'roll that all us baby boomers happily cut our teeth on. I discovered him live and bought the CD as a result. If it were vinyl it would now be worn out !!

    Having picked this up purely by chance, I was pleasantly surprised.

    The title track is pure rockabilly - something that Dwight Yoakam would have been proud of recording. 'What Kind of Fool' is reminiscent of an up-tempo 'Red River Valley' and, if I didn't know better, I would swear that Vince Gill had written 'Drifting Boy'.

    As with any album, there are a few songs which seem as if they don't quite belong. It's hard to decide whether Red Rivers is a country man at heart or a rocker. All songs, bar one, are self-penned and the lead guitar features throughout.

    Let down only by its lack of sleeve notes, the album is certainly worth listening to. Hey what have you got to lose?
