4 out of 5 stars I'll never forget this album.......2007-06-09

April, 1992. This ablum blends in with the fabric of my memories for that time. I remember it was a beautiful spring that year, and I was looking out over a field of desert wildflowers, with these songs in my head. I remember making love that night to my then girlfriend behind a bush in the park. I remember learning many of these songs and playing them with my friends in bedrooms and garages. Every time I hear "Bad luck" kick in today, I still am filled with the most awsome feeling inside.
This is great, honest, no-frills rock. One of the things I like most about it is the somewhat limited vocal capabilities of the songwriter--he's one of those that has a great song but can only sing it "the best he can", which is great because it keeps things honest, real, and full of true feeling

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT CD.......2007-05-12

BOUGHT THIS CD FOR THE SONG BAD LUCK AND WOUND UP ENJOYING THE WHOLE CD.

5 out of 5 stars Social Distortion At Their Best!.......2007-03-29

This album perfects the rockabilly sound that the band began with "Prison Bound" and "Social Distortion". It is definately the most country influenced album that they have ever released but it still holds on to their punk roots. Still, it is an incredible difference from "Mommy's Little Monster". If you are a fan of that album, this is a bit of a 180.

I would agree that this is their most "complete" album. This album contains little to no filler material. It can easily be listened to from front to back. The real standout songs on this album are...

-Cold Feelings
-Bad Luck
-Making Believe
-Born To Lose
-When She Begins
-King of Fools
-This Time Darlin'

5 out of 5 stars FROM A DEEP HEART.......2007-01-03

Lightlly naive in some lyrics but musically admirable, this SD CD is the best frontal entrance gate to one of the finest musical cocktails prepared with a mixture of blues, rockabilly, seventies punk and even some gospel. Lovelly violent and charming.

5 out of 5 stars Their best record, no doubt.......2006-11-09

This is easily their best record--others will argue that it's the self-titled, or "white light..," but this is it. All of the promise found on Prison Bound and the self-titled is realized here. Unlike the earlier records, there's no filler (Drug Train anyone?) to be found here at all. It's just a solid rock album. Yeah, this is easily their best. It's just a solid, mature record all the way through, and the groovy bonus track makes it even better. I love the distorted vocals on that last tune....

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

The rise of Bollywood soundtracks in the West has led to an increased awareness of the unique and often kitschy music and their composers, which have a popularity in India that rivals that of top pop stars in the West. With hundreds of song credits ranging from ad jingles or film soundtracks, as well as the music for the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Bollywood Dreams, the 38-year-old Rahman's resume is such that he's now considered one of the great composers of India. Based on his original score to the film Warriors Of Heaven And Earth, this album adaptation is Rahman's first full-fledged orchestral work. Eschewing tabla and sitar cliques, Rahman takes in influences of Turkey and China as well as India and integrates them into sweeping orchestral arrangements that recall the East-meets-West panoramic beauty of the The Last Emperor soundtrack. Rahman has the rare ability to articulate complex emotions without lyrics, and Between Heaven And Earth is the work of this master in full bloom. --Tad Hendrickson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2006-09-18

I don't remember how I even found this CD. I had never heard of A.R. Rahman but after sampling the music and reading the reviews I decided to buy it. What a revelation! The music is truly a timeless blend of eastern and western. It is at the same time powerful, sensual, deep, primitive, modern and melodic. Rahman blends primitive-sounding drums with lush orchestration and Indian and Chinese instruments. This is one CD of which I do not tire, even after I've had it on "repeat" in my CD player while I'm doing other things. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Music beyond Zen, beyond words beyond the world............2006-05-17

His music always sent chills down the spine. I feel sad for people who cant understand his music. Here is one rare gem of India. He is the Kohinoor of India. I have listened to this cd like a zillion times. Some people dont understand the genius of this music. All of the compositions are the same melody. Different variations, differnt tempos, different rhythms, different intruments but all of the 15 or so are the same melody. Unbelievable.
The lyrics to the song Warriors in Peace is very deep in Urdu/Hindi. I have tried to translate it below. Hope you guys enjoy it.

There is a calling in silence
(The world is) a marketplace of sighs
A lonely heart is a pity (as in a heart should never be lonely)
Come to me on this side. (as in the side of peace)

(This paragraph is focused on the night after a day long battle when the warriors are resting)

The dusk is setting in on the deserts.
The day has sunk into peace.
A pleasant breeze I dedicate unto thee. (to the warriors)
Rest thy sabers. (as in for ever)

(This paragraph focuses on the world ravaged by wars)

The world is a garden and
Do not color this garden with blood.
Whatever had to happen has happened. (as in atrocities)
Time itself is a healer.
let go of the bitter memories,
that drown lives in tears.

(this paragraph is in hope for the future)

The sun will rise again tomorrow.
Life will go on
Foster the world of aspirations.
For you are not alone; I am with you.
For I see you through the eyes of my heart Oh my companion
Every moment.

Call out to me
Anytime you need a friend
Like the mountain walks into the sea (referring to the lonliness of the mountains and the seas)
In the same manner we shall share our lonliness.
There is ease in tough times.
There is escape in difficulties.
Go beyond all these.

You have lost your dear ones.
you have shed many a tear.
You have to give your courage a destiny.
For you are not alone; I am with you.
For I see you through the eyes of my heart Oh my companion
Every moment.

Here the thing I like aboutt his song is that the lyrics and music both are in perfect harmony with each other. the music compliments the lyrics of Mehboob sahib. And nobody can do justice to lyrics in India beyond Rahman.

5 out of 5 stars The Genius of the Heart.......2004-06-19

Although I am a native American who grew up in Texas on Lightin' Hopkins and Ray Charles, with a diverse taste in music from Mozart to Bill Evans to Emmy Lou Harris, I now listen primarily to A.R. Rahman - and frankly have just about lost interst in any other music.

Rahman is the genius of melody and subtle percussion. His music has evolved out of India, but it also comes from what must be his personal enormous heart-felt love for all of life, humanity and God. His grasp of the eternal and the transcendental in melody will bring tears to your eyes and long lost feelings into your heart.

Rahman is a superstar composer worldwide, loved by literally millions, and appreciated by great musicians in every country all over the planet. I'm delighted SONY has released this, because not only is it breathtaking, magical music that draws you into far away exotic realms, but it is commercially accessible to us as westerners and perhaps it will introduce many more to the Genius of the Heart - A.R. Rahman.

I can't say enough good things about his music. Look him up on the internet - there are dozens of websites devoted to him, his music, and his remarkable life. A modern day Orpheus, India's Mozart - Awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing Music of the Silk Road: A Powerful Moving Epic.......2004-05-23

This CD will appeal to anyone who loves the music of China, India, Turkey, Western orchestral arrangements, and original musical phrases expressed on traditional instruments. The erhu (Chinese violin), duduk (Armenian styled recorder), and taiko drums crescendo and decrescendo to create peak emotional interludes throughout the CD. I can only say, at last I found the music of A. R. Rahman!!! Having fallen in love with this CD - I very badly want to view the Chinese film, "Warriors of Heaven and Earth" for which the music was originally created.

Review of contents: track #1, "The Golden Era" begins with a delicate flute introduction which grows into a full blown expressive orchestral interlude, occasionally allowing the flute the most prominent status. It is done with a pleasing refinement. "Warriors in Peace" track #2, has sensual feminine vocals sung in Hindi, which enhance the intense appeal of the song. The melody is lyrical, the words are poetic.

Most highly captivating is track #15 which is an English translation of track #2, "Warriors in Peace". Some lyrics follow,
"Call me when you need a friend,
when you need a friend,
As the mountains crumble to the sea,
Trouble always finds a way to keep you away from me.
Look at me through my mother's eyes ...
See who I am ...
Forever free."

"Lord An's Empire' (#3) has intense drum beats that follow the sound of "AH" which occurs in a wave-like rhythmic chant that reminds me of ancient shamanic traditions. I feel my ancestral roots calling, the Hungarian shamans are whispering to me ... Track #4, "Water" begins with the mellow timber of the duduk, that is enchanting, lonely, personal, and haunting. "Horses" (#5)includes the taiko drums that cresendo and decrescendo, as if preparing for battle. It is energizing and dramatic.

"Mountains" (#6) begins with a higly evocative erhu intro (Chinese violin). It is accompanied by strong taiko drums that awaken the senses. Next are the transitional musical phrases of the orchestra. Again, the rare lone 'voice' of the erhu enters only to be overcome by the intense taiko drum-beat, seems to be a call to battle. Next, one hears Tibetan monks doing their guttural sounds ... chanting for peace, knowing full well that men are preparing for war. "Blue Light" #10, has a soulful soothing flute intro which grows into an orchestral crescendo/decrescendo ocassionally broken up by an unexpected interlude, the sounds of a lonely duduk and the clanging of cow bells. The effect is stunning ...

My sincere thanks to A.R. Rahman, the Czech Film Orchestra and Choir, Sadhana Sargam (Hindi vocals, "Warriors in Peace"), other vocalists and musical soloists -- for this magnificent creation of epic proportions. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

Discs that attempt to cross-pollinate jazz with the soulful sounds of klezmer tend to be hit-or-miss; usually you just end up wondering if today's players are half as proficient as the forefathers they're trying to upstage. Andy Statman's credentials don't allow for such doubts. He apprenticed with klezmer legend Dave Tarras (and was even bequeathed the master's clarinet), and whether on clarinet or mandolin, his playing is impeccable. On Between Heaven & Earth, Statman reaches a (thus far) career high point and creates something completely gorgeous and new. The quartet is modeled on the jazz paradigm (horns, piano, rhythm section), and the occasional virtuoso guest (banjoist Bela Fleck and mandolinist David Grisman) joins in. The results are spectacular: extended meditations on Hasidic themes and compositions that quite literally blossom before your very eyes, with shades of klezmer, bluegrass, and jazz all thrown together. The tunes may not come out swinging, but, filled with gorgeous reflections, a gentle pace, and haunting solos, they simmer to great results. The cuts were recorded live in single takes, and the effect is moving and spiritual; there are quiet moments here, and (thank God) the ensemble never sounds rushed. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars TRUE TRADITIION CUTTING EDGE CLASSIC.......2005-12-02

Andy does a tremendous job of taking nigunim (songs) of the holy hasidic masters of long a go. he puts it in a format which people can appreciate today. However, he does not sell out. Meaning, is he does not "water down" . Andy perserves the holiness and sacred nature of each tune so that even the tradional are able to enjoy this. Andy bridge the tradition with modern times and does so in a magnificent fashion

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Milestone.......2004-09-27

It is often said that Andy Statman is a "musician's musician." He also may be said to be a "critic's musician," having earned an unending string of accolades from the press throughout his career. This CD, for example, was featured on the cover of the year-end double-edition of Billboard just before the record hit the stands, and subsequently was dubbed one of the Ten Best CDs of the Year by NY Times music critic, Neal Strauss. If I may add my "two cents," I would say that "Between Heaven and Earth" is an American-Chassidic answer to "A Love Supreme." These sessions were truly inspired!

5 out of 5 stars Superb jazz based on an unusual tradition.......2002-09-20

I think the reviews by Jason Verlinde and Rabbi Yonassan Gershom are accurate as to the feel and value of this music. I mostly want to add some technical stuff that may be of interest. The quartet is Statman on the clarinet (he has a beautiful yearning tone) and mandolin, Kenny Werner on the piano, Harvie Swartz on the acoustic bass and Bob Weiner on the drums. Bola Fleck (banjo), David Grisman (mandolin) and Scott Lee (bass) put in guest appearances.
When I first heard the first song on this record it reminded me a lot of the first song on Moodiology by George Garzone. Werner also plays on that excellent album and on both albums he is in fine McCoy Tyner form- playing piano of great spiritual power and beauty. Other than Statman, Werner is the main instrumental presence on this disc.
Statman on clarinet is wonderful. He doesn't so much tear up the changes as work with the melodies. When you have melodies of this beauty it is a wonderful approach.
One reviewer found this music to be too new ageish. Maybe but I think in that case he has heard a lot better new age music than I have. I find this album to hold its own against anything I put it up against on my CD changer. Right now I am playing it with masses by Palestrina. I have played it up against Leila Josefowicz, Anouar Braham and George Garzone (it is apparent that Statman is not the player that Garzone is but then how many are?). Each time I play this CD I find new things to hear, new beauty to enjoy. These guys play this music because they love it, they feel it to the bone, it cuts to the heart of how they see the world and, I suspect in Statman's case as well as Palestrina, it is part of an ongoing conversation with God. How often do you get to hear music played with that much heart? It may not speak to you but it is definitely worth a listen to find out.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing change of pace.......2000-08-31

Most albums of Hasidic music tend to focus on the rapidly-paced "table bangers" designed to get your adrenaline going. Not so with this album. Statman and crew have chosen some of the slower, more contemplative Hasidic tunes, and rendered them in a soul-filled cross between klezmer and modern jazz. The result is meditative Jewish music that is definitely not the usual "new age" pablum.

In their original cultural context, these tunes are sung orally, usually without instrumental accompaniment, because the use of instruments is forbidden on the Sabbath and festivals. Instead, the singers sit around the table, using their voices to improvise complex harmonies and variations on the basic tunes. Sometimes the tunes have words, but more often, they are made up of meaningless sounds such as "ai-ai-ai!" that, precisely because they are wordless, can contain all possible meanings of the heart. The result is a sort of verbal jazz that reaches deep levels of the soul.

Such music is known in Hebrew as a "devekus niggun" (D'VAY-kuss-NEE-gun), which means, loosely translated, "A sacred tune for connecting with God." What Statman has done here is to translate that oral devekus experience into instrumental music. And it really works! As I listened to this album, I was carried back to my own deepest experiences around the Shabbos table. There are only nine pieces on this CD, but each is long enough to really get into the music, the same as when we sing them around the table. This album truly conveys the inner spirit of Hasidism.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soul!.......2000-03-06

This album is really a favourite of mine. No easy listening, no swinging. It's full of subtle and spectacular ensemble music. Statman's clarinet reaches out to unknown heights and the combination of styles is really moving. Improvising on well-known Hassidic themes, Statman and his musical friends create a new genre: mystical music with body and Soul! Unlike so-called 'New Age-music', that usually lacks any depth, this album combines the old with the new.

There is no way to write about Somewhere Between Heaven and Earth without acknowledging that the album was inspired by the 1996 death of Cindy Bullens's 11-year old-daughter, Jessie. Bullens had taken a long break from recording when tragedy prompted her to write and record these songs. But to dwell on the particulars of her awful experience would be to diminish the universal nature of a song such as "The Lights of Paris" (which could be about anyone who has lost the love of another) or the redemptive power of "I Gotta Believe in Something." Bullens has a voice that is honest and simple, yet capable of the assured performance that only experience brings. It cuts through the ringing guitars with pure rock & roll passion. Truth be told (and herein it is) these songs and performances represent the best of what popular music has to offer: the delineation of our pain and the tools to see us through it. Had she exorcised her sadness with a dark, highly personal work, Bullens might have felt better, but what would have been gained? Instead, with a little help from friends Bonnie Raitt, Bryan Adams, Lucinda Williams, and Rodney Crowell, Bullens reminds us why we listen to music in the first place. Michael Ross

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should experience this CD.......2005-07-22

As a pediatric oncology nurse, this CD has very special meaning to me. I try to share this music with as many of my patients' families as possible. Sometimes my families are feeling so many emotions, they can't put them into words. Cindy Bullens does that for them. Even if you haven't experienced a loss such as Cindy's and some of the amazing children I have had the pleasure of taking care of, this CD will touch you in a special way.

5 out of 5 stars A very powerful and emotional album..........2005-02-23

This is a very powerful and emotional album inspired by the death of Cindy Bullens' daughter Jessie. I hate imagining the loss of your child. There should be some sort of law of nature in which no child can die before their parents.

This release has vocal contributions from Bonnie Raitt, Bryan Adams and Lucinda Williams who sings beautiful harmonies on my favorite song here..."The End of Wishful Thinking". There is also some very touching vocal's from Cindy's teenage daughter Reid on the song "As Long As You Love". Other contributors include Benmont Tench and Rodney Crowell.

This album is much more about hope and coping and learning to live again rather than dwelling on her loss. Included are photos and some inspiring liner note from Cindy as well as from Dave Marsh who also lost a child to cancer. This came out in 1999 and it would nice to hear something new from Cindy again.

"I gotta believe in something
That there's just plain nothing
Don't sit right with me"

5 out of 5 stars Tremendously moving, absolutely glorious.......2003-03-24

This CD features excellent, moving and very thoughtful rock of the highest caliber. Bullens' vocals are super and her guitar work is excellent, but neither begins to compare with the quality of the poetry she has written in each of these songs. This CD represents a triumphant recovery from a deep tragedy, the death of her daughter, Jessie. BRAVO!

5 out of 5 stars A Moving Tribute.......2003-02-24

Cindy Bullens is a powerhouse vocalist. I remember having met her many years ago when she was rocking the stage as a backing vocalist on an Elton John tour. Many years...and tears have obviously passed and she (we) finds (find)the voice of her soul in this amazing album. The quality of the songwriting puts it in the caliber of the best of Don Henley...I wish he could have sung on one of the tracks. The beautiful "As Long As You Love" (Scarlet Wings) is a masterpiece of emotional poetry and the fact that she is acompanied by her daughter Reid adds a special and touching voice. I recommend this album to everyone. Buy it for yourself and listen to what loss and love sound like. Then buy a few more copies as gifts for your friends and family to cherish. Don't burn copies...the original is the only way to go. The booklet and written message are valuable additions to the package. Dave Marsh put it beautifully: "Somewhere Between Heaven and Earth is a miracle."

4 out of 5 stars BITTERSWEET.......2002-10-26

I remember hearing Cindy's "Better Than I Ever Been Before" back in 2000. The song was so warm. It was obvious that a woman who had pulled herself through some serious pain had recorded that song and tried to be as optimistic as she could. It was so sunny yet weary. Come to find out, Cindy wrote not only that gem but this courageous whole album after the unfortunate passing of her eleven year old daughter Jessie. "Somewhere Between Heaven and Earth" is a beautiful album. You may have not lost your daughter but you feel the sadness, anger, remorse, and all the feelings that go through losing a lost one. The entire album grabs you and it's an wonderful album for someone whose lost a child. Or anyone whose lost anyone that's really close to them and they want to find hope in that particular suitation. A great album, nevertheless.

5 out of 5 stars POWER metal not FLOWER metal.......2005-07-03

Somebody please help me!! I've had the chorus for "warrior" stuck inside my head now for 2 days and I can't get rid of it.

I guess that's the price one has to pay for listening to a cd that is so damn appetizing. From start to finish it was like a rollercoaster ride that you thought was never going to end and were momentarily depressed when it did end but quickly realized that you can ride it all over again.

With this release Firewind have raised the metal bar to a new level that many peers in the genre will find difficult to rise to. After listening to Between heaven and hell all other metal bastions seem small and irrelevant. The majority of metal seems to run on two tracks - the track of melody and the track of brutality. Most bands seem to compromise one in order to achieve the other. Very rarely does a band successfully fuse them both together but Firewind has done just that and also manages to add creativity to the songwriting that makes each song stand on it's own rather than just recording one song ten times and disguising it as a full length album. You get the impression that these guys are sticklers when it comes to quality and don't just release whatever they record. There's probably alot of material that ended up on the cutting room floor. In other words they go through painstaking efforts to sift through all the rock to collect the gemstones and discard everything else.

OK that's it now. If you like blistering, headstrong power metal with a a heavy dose of POWER your collection won't be complete without this CD. I rarely give albums a perfect score but I think this one for certain deserves it.

5 out of 5 stars When you want the very best..........2004-02-16

The following is from my review of Burning Wind, however, I talk about Heaven & Hell quite a bit, so I just pasted that review here:

When I first heard Between Heaven & Hell I was blown away. Here was an album worth listening to again, and again, and again. I got to the end of the first song and said, this is awesome! And I just HAD to listen to that song over again.
I thought the same would happen for burning earth. I was wrong.

It's a good album, but nothing really blew me away. There was only one song, #5, where I thought after, that I wanted to relisten to it again right away.

However, on Heaven & Hell, I had that feeling, that desire, on songs 1,2,3,5,6,7,9,10,11 & 12. (4 and 8 I thought were basically the same song...) It took me days just to get through the entire cd just because I kept replaying the same songs over and over again. They were THAT damn good.

Heaven & Hell songs had awesome hooks. The rhythms just infect you and before you know it, you're foot is tapping, your head is nodding...

Only one time, during the first minute of song #5, I got that silly grin on my face, my head started nodding, I sat forward in my chair, here it was I thought! FINALLY! After 4 so-so songs, a song that had my attention. But that was pretty much it. Just like "Oceans" on Between Heavan & Hell, song #5 on Burning earth was just way too short, almost an incomplete idea. It's like they were playing, and somebody just started the fade out even though the song wasn't done. Maybe it was an accident, I don't know. The second (and only other) instrumental song on Between Heaven & Hell wasn't like that at all! A complete song.

So, bottom line, if you're a fan of this genre, you'll enjoy Burning wind. It's good for a spin here and there. But I'd say I was pretty disapointed compared to Heaven & Hell.

When I got Heaven & Hell, I thought to myself, from this point forward, FIREWIND is my new favorite band. Heaven & Hell remains, and will remain, one of my favorite all time cd's, but as far as FIREWIND is concerned, they're no longer at the top of my list. The last band that fell off the top of my list was on their 10th album before they crapped out, so, this is like a world record for the rise and fall, in my humble opinion...

    5 out of 5 stars Firewind raaaaaaging!.......2003-04-14

A while back a friend of mine came to my house praising this album as if it was a god and saying how the guitarist (Gus G) was the best new guitarist out there. Being a fan of Stephen Fredrick's other band Kenziner I had my bud shut up so I could hear the album and I then understood his excitement.

This is some blistering metal. Just when I think that I've heard all the great bands out there another one comes out to punch me in the face and Firewind did just that. Gus G may be the next Malmsteen only without so much of the guitar wanking. And Stephen is in top form here, belting out every song as if it was his last.

So if you want some scorching TRUE metal check out Firewind. You won't be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars BLAZING METAL WITH SOME CLASS!!.......2003-02-13

I had seen some ads for this album but the first time I heard this band was when one of my best friends in Canada received a copy from his buddy in Greece. I must say his cover is way nicer looking then the US release but the cover will be the least of your worries when this music addresses your ears. This serving of super finely done speed / power metal fires off with a song that is also the album title and once you hear about four seconds you will be hooked. The entire album rocks as a whole and never relents or lets the true metal head down. On first listen lots of the songs sounded the same but upon further listens they are indeed individuals each to themselves. The guitarist may be young but man can this guy shred. The album is unique in that it was put together in so many different areas of the world too, with this added here and that added there.I would surely include this offering on my favorite album to listen to list. I am most certain that any metal head needs this one, cause if you don't have it and your friends do you will look uninformed., not to mention be without your daily requirement of important metal in your diet! I can hardly wait for the next one but this one will be hard to beat. The "Firewind" has blown alot of us away and lit the fire for more stuff like this one. Buy or cry!

what else is there to say? fun songs, fun lyrics, catchy hooks. good music to cruise to. not a single track to skip. I cant understand why this music is not more acknowledged considering the crap on the radio. this goes out to the greatest band in all the land. thankyou mike ness, for putting the rock back into roll and bringing back the much needed flavor into the sourness that we call art today.

5 out of 5 stars Showcase of New Music.......2004-04-05

A City Called Heaven showcases six accomplished contemporary African-American voices: Olly Wilson, Alvin Singleton, Wendell Logan, Tania Leon, T. J. Anderson, and Anthony Davis. Though sharing the common link of the African Diaspora, this is an eclectic collection borrowing from many cultural legacies.

My favorite piece is Anthony Davis' "Wayang II" (Shadow Dance.) Its multiple and contstantly changing layers of melody, metrical settings and tempi are mesmerizing, a kaleidoscope of sound.

Now I must confess I'm not generally a big fan of post modern music; I prefer to listen and enjoy with my ears first and my brain second. (In other words, I prefer melody.) But I'm sure anyone who does like this sort of music will be impressed and pleased by what they find here, and especially by the performances of Thamyris, Atlanta's internationally famous contemporary music ensemble.
