Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski hatched the idea for Rogue's Gallery while filming "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"--that idea being to cast genteel rock superstars like Bono, Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry, Andre Corr, and Sting to reinterpret gritty seafaring standards for an exhaustive 43-track double-disc set produced by Hal Wilner. Fun--but not great.......2007-07-03

What a concept--a pirate song co-produced by Verbinski and Depp inspired by the "Pirates of the Carribean" series. It should be great and in places, it is. The big question I came away with is--who is Jack Sh**? That one definitely has me guessing.

I won't belabor the song content or the production value. I think the most notable reviews have got that down pat, although I'm not marking down as far as they have because I'm giving points for originality being a fan of Spike Jones and some other truly demented people.

One thing to note: this is not a CD you'd buy if you were looking for something to amuse your kids. Some of the content is very bawdy and Mom and Dad would have some serious 'splaining to do to the little pirates. There's both some language and some situations that are more twisted than a Hangman's knot.

Some of the songs are quite good(mellow)others a little odd. Its what I expected, but not what you would expect.

It is not unusual to find sea shanties performed by not the greatest musicians or singers in the world. It is not unusual to find shanties sung by people who have difficulty keeping perfect pitch, or tempo. But at least they understand what the music is about, and sing it with heart and enthusiasm and a love for the genre.

Hal Wilner should stick to whatever genre it is that made him know enough to be approached by labels, because he clearly has no understanding, and less enthusiasm for *this* genre.

If you love lively music from the maritime era, you can only be bitterly disappointed by this collection. Out of 43 tracks, I found 15 that were salvageable. Sort of.

I've already tossed this onto the pile to go to the resale shop. It wasn't worthy the cost of shipping.

I have to admit that I have no idea what kinds of music the pirates sang aboard their ships. I know it probably wasn't "yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me," but I expected something different than this. I think my expectations have been colored by groups like The Pogues, Flogging Molly, The Tossers, and the Real McKenzies. I have an annual Pirate Party and I was hoping to find some good music here to get people in the mood for a treasure hunt or pirate liar's dice, but instead, the music on this CD is something I'd put on if the party went on too long and I wanted to encourage people to leave. Some of it is actually awful and the rest is too slow and plodding to inject much energy into any situation.

I appreciate what was attempted here (contemporary artists paying homage to sea chanteys in the spirit of our romanticized version of the pirate era) but it just doesn't really work. The effect is similar to what would be achieved if the London Philharmonic Orchestra attempted to play rap "music" with Luciano Pavarotti rhymin' while flashing gang signs.

the selection of titles attracted me. The quality of the arrangements, the voices, and the music---are all quite bad.

It is VERY sad that these same titles, could not have been produced for quality. They sound like a nightmare.

Jethro Tull delivers again.......2007-08-02

The great thing about classic Jethro Tull is that, whether you're listening to an album from the late 60's or late 70's, it's going to be good. Why? Because most Jethro Tull albums are written more or less the same way. If you like one, you're most likely going to like ALL of them.

By the mid 70's, Jethro Tull had pretty much established themselves as a pretty unique band with their own sound and style. Once again, nobody can figure out if they are a straight-up rock band, or one of the progressive rock giants.

Minstrel in the Gallery is closer to Aqualung than all the other albums, in my opinion. That's because the songs on this album are, for the most part, pretty long, but not EXTREMELY long. Long enough to tell an interesting story and build some interesting musical ideas. The flute playing is solid like always, and the guitar work rocks harder than usual. This is just another really solid album.

Occasionally you might hear the title track on classic rock radio, but I can assure you that the rest of the album maintains the same level of quality. Jethro Tull were really good at making one great album after another for over a decade.

Very entertaining album. .......2007-06-29

I hate to give a tull album 4 out of 5 stars, but I did that in the consideration for those that may not be huge Tull fans, or may be very new to Tull.

This album displays wonderful work from every member of the band. Barre's guitar solo on the title track is wonderful, but I cannot help but notice the killer bass and drums that are backing it. Anderson's voice is better than ever, and his songwriting is right on the spot.

Songs such as "Cold Wind to Valhalla" really hits the right place. The forest-like jams that are contained on this album never get old to me. One of my favorite Tull albums, and I hope I will always have it in my collection.

The album is full of heart, and it's just fantastic.

Mixed Bag.......2007-06-09

Side 1 of this is fairly sad. The title track is okay - nothing great, but it manages a Zeppelin-like swagger. The following 2 songs sound like parody though, particularly "Black Satin Dancer" with its riff stolen from Santana floating around in it.

Side 2 though, less bombastic and more acoustic (with arrangements) is good stuff and "Baker Street Muse" reminds you that Anderson was a songwriter of real talent, he really did some great work and this is some of it.

Tull at their Best!.......2007-03-15

This is definitely one of the two or three tippity-top Tull albums. It's a bit more centered on an introspective snapshot of Ian's personal life and marital problems, rather than the usual grand philisophical themes, but the result is poignant and excellent.

One of Tull's best, one of rock's greatest!.......2007-02-07

This album has an excellent mix of great examples of the different sides of Tull - acoustic folk song ("One White Duck"), heavy metal ("Black Satin Dancer"), folk-lore ("Cold Wind To Valhalla"), and epic progressive (folk) rock ("Baker St. Muse" is kind of a return to "Thick As A Brick", but only 16 minutes this time!). The musicians are superb. John Evans's Beethoven-inspired playing here converted me from someone who didn't like piano in rock. Martin Barre has a unique style of playing - not really sounding like other hard rock or progressive rock guitarists, but adept at both. This whole album is unique and magnificent.

What can I say about this band. I have six of there cd's and each one is just as good if not better then the last. The Gallery is a very great cd by them and should not be missed if you can get your hands on it. I won't go into much of the songs becasue really I would just be saying what many other people say.

Just pick this CD up and all there other CD's.

A Template.......2007-05-06

Having myself started with Character, I've been uncovering the hidden treasures of DT, starting with this one, I'm very happy to say that although Stanne's vocals are a little rough around the edges, they are infused with fantastic lyrics as stated earlier, but most importantly they establish an unforgettable in style. Aside from recording quality I can see most of these songs appearing on Character. Guitarwork is tight, and DT is without a doubt my favorite metal band... they don't simply grind charnel house with their guitars, the construct beautiful melody that speeds right along.

Though metal fans tend to be fickle, I have to say that the established a specific style with this album, and though they broke from it largely in the future, they've emerged a very mature and competent band that takes these ideas and makes something truly new and original.

Ever since I acquired a fetish for melodic death metal, I've looked into a lot of bands that are classified in the genre. Dark Tranquillity was one of them. The Gallery was the first CD I bought by them, and it certainly won't be my last. This album is filled with bone-crushing heaviness, melodic beauty, and mythical lyrics. Above all, it has an atmosphere that is unlike any other metal album I've heard.

I'm glad I didn't review this as soon as I listened to it for the first time, because otherwise, it would'nt have been so positive. Dark Tranquillity is a lot heavier than other melodeath bands I've heard. You could probably even argue they're borderline black metal, but with a melodic sensibility. But I let it grow on me, and after a while I recognized for the masterpiece that it is.

The first track, Punish My Heaven, opens up with drums, and then really fast, schizophrenic guitars and bass interwind with each other, and Mikeal Stanne lets out a "RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!" that catches you completely off guard. It gives you a good feel for what the rest of the album will sound like. The following track, Silence And The Firmanent Withdrew, is a lot more melodic, but no less evil. Other great tracks are the title track, The Dividing Line, The One Brooding Warning, The Emptiness From Which I Fed, and ...Of Melancholy Burning. But the whole album is pure melodic death bliss. My favorite song is by far the title track: The lyrics, instruments, atmosphere.... everything in this song is top notch. The lyrics are a good representation of the album cover, and the artwork throughout the sleeve of the album. What makes it even cooler is the female vocals (done by Eva Marie Larsson) that wail during the acoustic guitar interlude. This is also used on ...Of Meloncholy Burning.

The best part about The Gallery is that even in its most musically complex parts, it still feels very atmospheric and seems to just serve the music. Mikeal Stanne can hold a growl for a very, very long time. Just listen to his shrieks on Punish My Heaven and The Dividing Line. Even when he sing clean vocals, they're still pretty gritty and low. Frederik Johansson and Anders Jivarp make an awesome guitar duo; they also interwind solos on Punish My Heaven and The Emptiness From Which I Fed. Martin Henricksson's basslines are ACTUALLY audible! Not only that, but his basslines are very intricate and complex, not just the same-old-same-old that other metal bands use. And Niklas Sundin's drumming is very unique. I say this because even when using double bass kicks, his drums glide over you, if that makes sense.

The only time the album gives you a breather is the instrumental Mine is The Grandeur...., which is soothing, folksy-sounding acoustic guitars, but that is interrupted as soon as .... Of Melancholy Burning kicks in. Mine Is The Granduer is basically the prelude to ... of Melancholy Burning (Mine Is The Grandeur of Melancholy Burning). It's also the only other track to use female vocals.

Inside the album sleeve, there are fragments of art scattered on the sides. Some of the pictures include a raven, lava, forests, and others I don't know what the hell they are. But that doesn't matter because each picture is very cool and interesting.

The reissue contains 5 covers: Bringer of Torture by Kreator, Sacred Reich by Sacred Reich, 22 Arcia Avenue by Iron Maiden, Lady In Black by King Diamond, and My Friend of Misery by Metallica. I haven't heard the originals to be perfectly honest, but I can tell you that DT do an excellent cover of each of these songs, and could fit in right with the rest of the album.

Like I said before, The Gallery is my only DT record, but after being blown away by it, I plan to get my hands on every CD I can find by tis awesome band. Even if you only like metal a little bit, I STRONGLY recommend you buy The Gallery the first chance you get. The lyrics are intriguing, the musicianship is great, the vocals are intimidating yet strangely emotive, and the atmosphere is priceless.

"The Gallery" is the jewel in the crown of Dark Tranquillity's god-like back catalogue, and given the quality of the competition, that's saying something. Whenever I listen to it, I'm always amazed at how such a powerful, emotive, sensual piece of art can exist. Make no mistake; this is not only the greatest album ever to emerge from the Gothenburg scene. "The Gallery" is almost as close to perfection as music can be.

The real brilliance of "The Gallery" does not lie in technical skill, although to say that the likes of Niklas Sundin and Anders Jivarp are unskilled would be completely untrue. Datk Tranquillity's real genius lies in their arrangements and songwriting. This may seem like a bold statement, but I believe that in these areas, Dark Tranquillity are unmatched. Not even Opeth, who are renowned for writing songs which rival classical symphonies, can match Dark Tranquillity in this one area. The guitars, bass and drums here harmonise in a way so perfect that it's hard to believe they were written by mere humans. Each instrument compliments each other perfectly, none dominating but all contributing to the artistic beauty of "The Gallery." The guitars and bass (and you can actually hear the bass in this album - that's always a good sign), far from being an assault on the senses like so many other heavy metal albums before and since, consist mainly of tremolo picking, the tempo often varying, intertwining around each other to create a lush, melodic, organic atmosphere. Many other, lesser melodic death bands rely on synths almost exclusively to provide melody (Children Of Bodom, I'm looking at you) as a way to get around really putting their backs into making the arrangements work, but thankfully, Dark Tranquillity's melody comes from a higher work of musicianship. Occasionally acoustic guitars and pianos will also kick in to provide a softer interlude in songs like "Edenspring."

The drumming also deserves recognition as a feat of songwriting skill. Anders Jivarp's rhythms, rather than just using repetitive beats at a fixed tempo to provide the music with solidity, provides "The Gallery" with a third thread in it's weave of musicianship and establishes another layer in its melody. He makes full use of the toms and cymbals without disregarding the snare drum, with occasional bursts on the double bass pedal to add energy when the time is right. This is a heavy metal album after all.

And then of course, there's Mikael Stanne. On "The Gallery," he's at the top of his game, belting out agonised yet hauntingly emotive shrieks that put even his counterpart in At The Gates, Tomas Lindberg, to shame. There is a distinct similarity between him and Mikael Akerfeldt in the early days of Opeth. However, unlike Opeth, his voice sits at precisely the correct level in the mix; you can turn "The Gallery" up to a decent volume without the vocals becoming grating, but the chances of anyone considering them too quiet are precisely none. Female vocals performed by Eva-Marie Larsson can also be found on the tracks "The Gallery," "Lethe" and "...Of Melancholy Burning," which are very beautiful and near classical in tone. One notable moment is on "...Of Melancholy Burning," when one of Eva-Marie's oparetic calls slowly merges with a monstrous howl from Stanne, creating an odd, yet extremely cool effect.

I really don't have anything bad to say about this album. Each song is a masterpiece, a work of art each in it's own unique way. The only pity is that Dark Tranquillity never wrote anything like it again. In my own opinion, "The Gallery" is absolutely essential to anyone who enjoys music in any way shape or form, one of - if not THE - deepest, most layered, most rewarding albums you will ever hear. It is tangible proof that heavy metal is as much an art form as anything else.

Absolutely Enthralling........2006-06-01

I believe I'm not alone when I argue that Dark Tranquility's '95 album "The Gallery" is the cornerstone of the Gothenburg melodic death metal sound, as well as the album that took it into a different dimension. This album has the trademark harmonies, melodic solos, occasional female vocals, and a stellar production; but at the same time, it's not "straight-up" melodic death like In Flames early albums or old Arch Enemy. No, "The Gallery" has a progressive feel to it, and a somewhat Gothic atmosphere to it. (I would connect this to Stanne's lyrics.) Dark Tranquility use a technical flair on this album not found in many metal bands; meaning that the transitions between the riffs are kind of weird. You know, the type of thing where just as you're getting into a nice riff, it switches up on you, and you're taken by surprise, finding yourself saying, "Woah, didn't see that coming!" However, it's not self-indulgent and the technical moments seem to make the album deeper and keep things interesting, rather than just trade riffs back and forth. For instance, "The Dividing Line" starts off with a strange, amorphous drum pattern leading a jagged guitar lead, but right after this, the boys kick it into high gear with ass-kicking harmonies in true Gothenburg style.

My love for the guitars on this album is unfathomable. From the gorgeous interlude "Mine is the Grandeur", which tastefully utilizes three classical acoustic guitars (harmonizing with each other, of course) and booming timpani drums, to the epic yet somber "Lethe" and the frantic neo-classical solos on "Punish My Heaven", it's total perfection. The display is not totally virtuostic, and the harmonies add so much impalpable atmosphere to this record. The bass playing is superb as well. Instead of playing regular root notes, the bass seems to be a totally independent instrument by itself, as seen on "Edenspring".

One of the greatest things that grabbed me about this album was the drumwork. The listener doesn't get pummeled to death with double bass overhauls or endless thrashfests, but the drumming firmly supports the music. To sum it up, it's technical, intricate, but not over the top. Anders allows to music to breathe, and his odd patterns add a lot to the music.

Stanne's voice here is his best, I think. His raspy screams are at his emotional heighth on "...Of Melancholy Burning" and the vicous "The Emptiness From Which I Fed", and his lyrics are far from the metal norm. You can feel the sorrow through his screams, and he doesn't try to be another Anders Friden clone. There are some occasional clean vocals, and the female vocals on the title track work perfectly, giving the album even more of an epic feel.

This is definitely an essential metal album, and I would place it in my top 5 of the 90's. Pick up at all costs.

Pebbles on LSD.......2007-06-15

The third entry in AIP Records' Pebbles series, which focuses on obscure mid 60s psychedelic rockers, is one of the most wonderfully "out there" albums ever. Don't worry- this isn't psychedelia of the whimsical "exploding purple butterfly" variety. This is full blown, mind-pulverizing, acid-drenched rock 'n' roll dimentia. Each song sounds like some pimple-popping teenager's bad trip, a heady concoction of hallucinogenic imagery and the kind of manic energy that can only be delivered by 60s garage band. Fuzz guitars and pounding rhythms are mixed with bizarre lyrics, trippy production, instrumrntal freak-outs, and the occasional burst of random noise. The result is a collection of songs that combine the raw joy of standard 60s garage rock with the weirdness of Frank Zappa or the Velvet Underground.

The best songs really are offbeat masterpieces: The Bees' "Voices Green and Purple" is an incredibly effective slice of nightmare-psych, with its ghostly three-note guitar riff, pulsating rhythms, and bloodcurdling screams. The same goes for The Monocles "Spider & The Fly," (NOT a cover of the Rolling Stones tune!) which features a deranged lyrical narration booming over an otherworldly production. There's also Lea Riders Group's "Dom Kellar os Mods," an obscure Swedish classic which builds from a taut, high-stung blues rocker into a full on freak out. The Calico Wall's "Flight Reaction" is a tense, weirdly funny journey into the mind of an acid-head with a terrible fear of flying. The song marries a ringing guitar line with an increasingly chaotic lead vocal and a catchy chorus. The Hogs' "Loose Lips Sync Ship" is gloriously inexplicaple, as are the Driving Stupid's astoudingly unhinged "Reality of Air-Fried Borsk" and "Horror Asparagus Stories." The Third Bardo's "I'm Five Years Ahead of My Time" is a tough, defiant psychedelic teenage anthem that really struts. William Penn Fyve's "Swami" is a hilarious sendup of hippie culture, with a great fuzz guitar-led melody thrown in for good measure. Teddy & The Patches' "Suzy Creamcheese" seriously rocks, with its pounding "Louie Louie" attitude and Zappa-inspired lyrics. And then there's the Race Marbles' indescribable Bob Dylan parody "Like a Dribbling Fram," which alone is worth the price of the CD. Higher Elevation's "The Diamond Mine" works purely becasue of kitsch value- it features some clueless D.J. reciting some "poetry," in which he stumbles helplessly from one psyhedelic cliche to the next, while a cheesy organ-driven noise-fest cranks along on the background.

Basically, it's insane. It's weird. It's one of the best volumes of the Pebbles series. Pick it up right now!

They sure have topped themselves if thats possible. One word of advice though don't trip while listening to this GOD knows what corner of your mind you won't be able to get out of. Awesome bands trying to emulate the Doors, the hippie Beatles and Syd Barret to hilarious effect. Higher Elevation is some DJ spouting some stuff thats psychedelic poetry over art noise in " The Diamond Mine", then you got some band called Crystal Chandlier whose lead singer sounds almost exactly like Jim Morrison in the song "Suicidal Flowers", and then you got Psych garage punk insanity complete with gritty vocals in the band "Driving Stupid" and their two awesome songs. Buy this now don't even hesitate.

Psychedelic Dementia.......2002-06-06

Prepare yourself for a brain frazzeling trip through obscure American psych! Other volumes in the Pebbles series are spoiled by beat and frat rock rip-offs, but this one is top notch acid fuelled insanity all the way. The Callico Wall`s nightmarish "Flight Reaction" and The Monocles "Spider and the Fly"- a three minute horror film on record - are among the many highlights. Also included are a couple of great psych novelties such as The Jefferson Handkerchief`s "I`m Allergic to Flowers" which tells the story of a hay fever sufferer`s unfortunate attempts to woo a flower child, not to mention the disturbed genius of Adjeeef the Poet and Oshun.
This, and the equally demented "Beyond the Callico Wall" are in my humble opinion the best two Yank Psych Comps available...Come on kiddies, summer`s here and it`s time to take a trip into the bubbling fudge Sundae of your mind, just watch out for those voices green and purple...............

Great Series,Weaker Volume.......2002-05-13

By all means pick up as many of the Pebbles Volumes as you can if you crave wild 60's garage rock. However #3 (here with some bonus tracks not on my vinyl version)is not one of the better ones that I own.It's less rock and roll, and more psychedelic arty noise. It does have a few real gems especially The Jefferson Hankerchiefs' "I'm Allergic To Flowers" and William Penn IV's "Swami".

I had an 8-track of this group's songs, but needless to say, that has gone by the wayside. I had tried in vain for several years to find a CD from this group and I finally located it! (Thanks Amazon for listing this!) There are some great songs on this CD and I am glad to finally have these recordings.

Makes me remember why I was almost a music major!.......2004-08-29

I really had to scour the internet to find and buy this cd! Why would I do such a thing? One day while driving in my car, I heard "Incantation and Dance" by John Barnes Chance playing on NPR and those wonderful memories of my freshman year of college came flooding back! The Chance piece is such a joyous and intricate exploration of the beautiful sounds that can be created when an ensemble of talented musicians, a great director, and a truly original piece of music are joined as one. I bought the cd specifically for this piece, but I also remember performing "American Overture" by Joseph Wilcox Jenkins while studying trumpet performance at Truman State University, a small liberal arts college in northeast Missouri.

Ok, so I gave up the dream of a career as a professional musician, but I will never forget that feeling of chills running up my spine while playing my trumpet on a lush piece like that one.

I'll bet if you were ever a band member in high school or college, this cd will bring back some good memories. Orchestral music is wonderful, but there is nothing like a big brass section and lots of percussion to make your heart race and your spirits soar!

Dello Joio is awesome.......2002-07-15

I had never heard "Scenes from the Louvre" before, and it was quite a pleasant surprise.

Dello Joio's music isn't that common, or maybe better to say not commonly found... so when a new work pops up I usually try to at least audition it. I wasn't disappointed at all.

By closing one's eyes, you can almost visualize walking through the different galleries - Dello Joio paints with music as well as any of the masters painted with oil! Bravo!

The rest of the CD is fine, but "Scenes from the Louvre" is the shining star. I only wish I had been able to see the television production that this was written for.

Not his best..........2006-06-25

I think each Harry Chapin album is good in its own right, but if I had to give a Chapin album the title of "not-the-best", it would be this album. The lyrics are good, but in regards to the instrumentation, it is over-produced.

Granted, I think an album that is over-produced can still work, but this seems to come off as pure self-indulgence. My theory: his album before this, Verities & Balderdash, had gone to No. 4 on Billboard and had given him a # 1 hit with "Cat's in the Cradle". As with the unwritten rule in the music biz, if you have great success with a record, the artist can "have it his way" to a greater degree in the record that will follow. The trouble is, with this album, I think the producers and execs at Elektra Records let Harry "have it his way" a little too much.

The record does have two songs which, I think, sound good: "Star Tripper" and "Sandy". So, in the end, the record is not without some merits, but overall, I cannot help but think that this record could have been better.

P.S. This album is not Chapin's finest moment, but to be fair, Bob Dylan released a slew of horrible records in the 1980s, yet even then, he was still greatly respected.

Got into Harry because of my parents and I could not thank them more for it. His music reminds me of my childhood and I could listen to this one anytime of the day and enjoy it.

Some of his best songs are on this one: Dreams Go By, The Rock, Bummer, and Tangled Up Puppet.

I don't know if anyone's noticed this yet, but if you turn the cover 90 degrees to the left you will see the "portrait" is of Harry. All the songs are good, but my favorite is "Dreams Go By."

THIS IS MY FAVORITE Harry Chapin Album. Way back when, I had all of his LP's and I wore them all out. ~ I know all the stories by heart. ~ At first glance, I thought I would choose the boxed set, but, alas, it did not include "Sandy," his shameless love song written to his beautiful wife, Sandy Chapin. ~ Along with "Tangled Up Puppet" and "Dreams Go By," this album illustrates to me Harry the Family Man, the REAL Harry. ~ Harry was my Hero and "my first" Sensitve Man. I was blessed to see Harry twice in concert. I waited in line afterward both times while he signed endless autographs, and promoted his passion to "End World Hunger." ~ Many years later, I now have my own Sensitive Man and our two beautiful children who inspire me, along with Harry, to strive to make THIS world "A Better Place to Be."ÿ

Masterpiece comes to mind. Also Solid Masterpiece is appropriate...

Having started with DT eons ago, and like most who were encouraged by the rebirth of quality music in the modern age (if tragically underground), I hungered for more "prog", a genre of music that really can only be pigeonholed as musicians who wield epic emotion but aren't satisfied without pushing envelopes at the same time...which really is simply characterized as the greatest music possible.

This virtousic concept album about apprehension towards corporate greed takes me back to that first Dream Theater or Queensryche album I heard, but at times Shadow Gallery surprises even myself into begging for placement into the forefront of popular music. It's that good.

One of the greatest songs I have ever heard is a keystone to this album: "I Believe." It is a good represenation of what Shadow Gallery produces in their finest moments. Layers of intellectually strewn choruses, virtuosic passages of dueling guitars/keys, and just heart-wrenching emotion. Top quality production and diversity even within itself. The here-then-gone cameo of James laBrie doesn't hurt. One of the most rare finds in humanity is technical proficiency coupled with fantastic expression and personality. I find this review staying very short, because put simply, it's all here.

It's been a while since there's been an album I've been addicted to so much. Every time I put it back on the shelf, I change my mind and listen to it one more time. Whenever I'm not listening to it and I think of it, I must go play it. That reminds me...

Okay - when I first heard this CD, I wasn't all that thrilled. It's not my first Shadow Gallery CD - I purchased Carved in Stone before this, and actually like that better, but Tyranny is starting to grow on me and I'm beginning to appreciate some it's merits I didn't notice at first. I'm not a power metal guy - I can't stand hearing speed guitar just to showcase how fast a guitarist can play, or speed druming for the same reason - only relative to the drummer. When I first listened to this CD, I got the impression that's what was unfolding and shelved it. I pulled it again and began to notice the story that unfolds with the lyrics - they're pretty complex and quite well done. Putting the lyrics together with the metal then begins to form the story that is Tyranny - it's almost scary that it's also almost a commentary on our current society and conditions! (but not a political soundoff). I can't accept the criticism of the vocalist I've read from other reviewers here. I find Shadow Gallery's vocals a strong point of the band and deserving of much more recognition and praise that they've received. They are simply exceptional. I still prefer Carved in Stone over Tyranny, but Tyranny has come off the shelf now and is becoming more appealing. It's worthy of a second listen, and maybe more.

i really enjoyed this shadow gallery album. great arangements.its allot more progressive then there debuit cd and their 2nd album. guitar work is great, and i was blown away by the drummer in this album. great album.
