Excellent.......2005-04-13
I am so glad i bought this cd. I had a choice between this, Churn and Shihad. I'v heard all of them and this is by far the best Shihad album. "Intro" is a perfect gateway into one of the best opening songs ever - "My Mind's Sedate", this song just has so much power and energy. I regularly put this cd in my car and turn it all the way up, I defy you not to start headbanging or playing air guitar to "The General Electric". This song contains one of my favourite song bits ever. The bridge before the first chorus. Jesus I just go absolutely nuts when i hear this bit and it never gets old. "Pacifier" is just too good for words. "Spacing" has got to be one of my favourite songs on this cd. A fantastic sing-along chorus that just makes you feel good. Same goes with "Life In Cars". This cd is at the number five slot in my collection. It should be in your's too.
Great Kiwi Rock n Roll.......2003-11-15
The General Electric is one of those albums you can listen to right through and not get bored. The songs all flow together quite nicely, which is a plus for any CD. This is the fourth offering from Wellington based band, Shihad. Although not their absolute best, it is certainly up there.
Stand-out songs are of course My Mind's Sedate, The General Electric, Pacifier and Sport & Religion. Others seem to flow quite nicely between these tracks.
I can imagine this album will stand the test of time, unlike many albums by artists during it's time. This album is different to Killjoy, Churn and Shihad as it is more laid back, and generic sounding. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing, as eacgh album seems to have it's own unique sound, while still being the same band.
This album is generic rock without the bored singers and musicians. It is not very original when compared to their other 3 albums. But it is far better than their recent CD "Pacifier".
Overall, If you are new to Shihad, I would consider forking out for Killjoy or Churn as they depict what Shihad was orginally about.
Shihad yes, this album a resounding NO!.......2001-10-22
I'll start this off with the assertion that Shihad are the best New Zealand band I've ever heard, and I live here. Churn was very nearly a very good album, Killjoy was an excellent one and the self titled album was 50/50 - Half the songs were classics, the other half was disturbingly awful. However, sadly, this album has followed the direction of the last one further, resulting in an album so completely dull that I just can't be bothered to listen to it any more.
Not that it's resoundingly bad. It's just so uninteresting I don't see the point. All of you lot who're giving it good reviews... Come on, you can't really tell me this album is as good as Killjoy. It's just radio-friendly rock music with absolutely no flair whatsoever. Yes, the band are talented musicians, but talented musicians playing dull unoriginal material is something that I'll leave to Dream Theater fans. Shihad used to be exciting, anthemic and damned good ambassadors for New Zealand rock. Now they just sound like any polished rock band anywhere - all the life has gone. I can't seriously think that this album would attract the fanbase (members of Faith No More et al) that Churn (for all its flaws) and Killjoy did. Speaking as a musician, this just doesn't inspire a second listen.
A crying shame.
Shihad will rock your world.......2001-07-28
Wow, what a CD. Once again Shihad prove that they are the greatest band you've never heard of with their 4th and best CD so far: The General Electric! Lead singer Jon Toogood's screaming vocals, the rifty merciless guitar of Phil Knight, The booming bass of Karl Kippenberger and the great heavy beats of Tom Larkin combine to blow your mind and bang your head. All tracks are great and there are no frayed ends. The way the intro leads smoothly into the first and greatest ever NZ rock track "my minds sedate" sets the tone for the entire abulm. Everything is pure gold from the hard rock of my minds sedate, just like everybody else and metal song to the sing along life in cars and sport and religion and the haunting beauty of pacifer. Buy it if you love rock!
An American's Response - Believe it! Very, Very Good Album.......2001-05-30
A power chord, riff-laden, hard working album that is worth the extra cost to buy it as an import. Tired of spending money on CD's with one or two good songs and the rest filler material? With the exception of "Life in Cars" this album is nothing but good songs. Listen to it loud and enjoy... By the way what the heck is an Antipode?

Shihad (Pacifier) Shihad.......2005-01-20
This album was the first of the new lighter sound Shihad put out. Their previous albums were HARDOUT!...they kind of went a bit soft..but in doing so proved they can really write a good tune, and appeal to a much wider audience. Apparently Iggy Pop considered them to pretty good at the time!. However , changing their name to Pacifier and an attempt to break into America proved their downfall, both in cred and sound.
Now re-renamed Shihad!, they have decided to get back to NZ and be what they originally were...a hard out rocking good band...new albums are apparently in the works under their old moniker.
5 Stars Plus.......2003-03-02
This is the best Shihad (in my opinion) album. Runs the gauntlet with Hard Rock, Blues Rock, little Punk Rock, and a great ballad to finish it (Boat Song). Everything song has a little different slant/sound to it. Highly recommended!!
Kiwi's Rock.......2002-07-31
New Zealand's own Shihad - (now known as Pacifier - ironically enough, they changed their name to "pacify" potential american audiences after Sept 11, cuz they thought Shihad sounds too much like Jihad)- The best rock outfit in a long time - these guys are real rock stars.. I just wish Australia would stop claiming them as their own, and the rest of the world would sit up and notice.
Iggy pop, Faith no more, and others have lauded the boys from the 'had.. just check 'em out for yourself. Especially if you like big rock, kind of industrial, with a punkish edge.
check out 'La La Land', 'Yer head is a rock', and 'Pig Bop'.. also check out their next album after this "The General Electric", and "The Blue Light EP"... tunes to watch for 'my mind's sedate', 'wait and see', 'the thin white line', 'sport & religion'.
Go The 'had!!
pretty darn good.......2002-02-15
Good third release from this New Zealand band. Not as groundbreaking as 'Killjoy' but a solid release nonetheless. Production is tight and the songs are good; albeit more straightforward than previous releases.
Most intense live band I've ever seen live.......1999-05-23
Being just across the pond from their homeland, I've had many opportunities to see Shihad play live (most recently at the Iron duke in Sydney). Their intensity and energy on stage is matched by the quality of their albums and material. I've been a fan since Churn was released and I picked it up on the spur of the moment(no regrets). I would have to say that whilst there is definitely the distinct Shihad sound on the self-titled album, the peak of their work (and my favourite Shihad album) is Killjoy (unfortunately not available on amazon for all you Americans). The hard, raw, and industrial intensity of Churn is just incredible. Turn this album up very loud (my favourite after Killjoy), But by all means get the self-titled album, you won't be dissapointed...

Brillent Kiwi Heavy SOund.......2003-11-27
To anyone who knows New Zealand Music they know that most of it is overhyped. Sure the Straight Jackets FIts Datsuns Panam are great but such bands as feelers etc are over hyped but belive me this is classic kiwi stuff. The opening SOng You Again is a crunching killler of a song written about Jons girlfriends attitude to him i guess pretty savage (i hope i never see u gain) Gimmie Gimmie is another col song and catchy corous, the call is similar and different but great heavy guitar sounds nad goood vocals. The Call and BItter are both great songs Bitter in particular but the suprise song is Debs Night Out, a quite mellow song with cool guitar soungs good lyrics and great voclas a touching song from an heaey album. After that its bak to the great heavey guitar and thumbing drums, silvercup starts slow before breaking out to a huge chorus and the other songs aree good as well. Recommened one of thier best other than maybe the general electric, don't expect pacifier you won't get it, but this is better less commerical and disticn;y kiwi.
Wildly Unknown Masterpiece.......2001-06-24
This band was a basic mistake discovery for me. A friend worked at a record store and had this cd as a promo and asked me if I wanted some he had in a batch. Sadly, all the promos were sub-par grunge and metal but this cd stood out like a sore thumb. From the opening of 'You Again', with its heavy as hell riff, to the 'toms as machine guns' drumming of 'Get Up'; you get a good idea that this band is a wonderful live experience. John Toogoods vocals are just that....Too 'damn' good! The songs are somewhat derivitive but in a good way. 'Gimme Gimme' has a very nice Trouble feel to it. The bridge/chorus has a a bit of Swervedriver going on and when the middle breaks out into a flurry gun-fire drumming, I dare you to say your heart isn't racing. 'Envy' sounds like Jawbox covering a New Model Army song. If you can understand that comparison.......and 'Debs Night Out' s a guitar synth layered gem. With some nice distorted bass textures and a very nice mid-80s euro-pop feel, this song could have been pulled off a Sisters Of Mercy record. Well with better singing of course..but the unofficial highlight of the cd for me is the song 'Bitter'. A Helmet inspired piece of muscle with such an amazing and surprisingly out of nowhere melodic chorus that I almost want to cry everytime it comes by. My only gripe is the vocals on this particular song are a bit too low in the mix; kind of like taking the indie-rock way of burying the awful vocals to an extreme. 'Silvercup' has the distinction of being the only song I have ever heard from this band outside of my own listening to the cd. I heard the guitar pattern used for some 'MTV real world' broadcast. Sad, I know....but oh well!
one of the best NZ albums ever........2000-12-20
Dark. Textured. Bleak. Angry. Wow. Those are the words to describe 'Killjoy', Shihads second LP, the followup to the industrially tinged 'Churn'. Possibly the biggest guitar riff in the world, opens the album, on the immensely heavy 'You Again'. Below the crunching guitars Toogood wails about possibly a lost friend ('I hope I never, see you, again.') and the ending to the song show Shihad's relentless touring of the Churn album had sent their collective muscle into the strastophere - the moody jam eventually clicking back for a soaring, 'wall of sound' finale. 'Gimme Gimme' is dominated by bassist Kippenberger, again Shihad showing their deft mastery of sonic changes in tempo and chords. Mid way through the disc Shihad take a break and swing into 'Debs Night Out', a fabulously slow synth driven song before kicking into 'Bitter' - possible the finest song Shihad have ever written. The album closes on a fusillade of riffs, just as the album started. Its an andrenalised ride from start to finish - Toogoods gritty vocals submerged beneath the guitars and Larkin's drums driving the album all the way to its climatic ending on 'Get Up.' Sustained, brilliant and dense, Killjoy is a testament to this fantastic heavy rock band.

Best NZ rock album.......2005-06-30
This album has to be the best thing in rock to come from NZ's shores. In a list of the best NZ albums of all time it comes in second only to Split Enz.
Killjoy has wickedly innovative music and a genuine sense of emotion and power all the way through.
Hardly derivative rock, it's rythms range from 3/4 to 4/4 to 5/4 yet are as moshable as anything from the nu-metal era.
2 Tracks stand out for me 'You again' and 'Bitter'. You again opens the album with one of the biggest rock riffs ever heard and bitter is a salt-in-the-wound ball of distortion and blazing rhythms. And just wait till you hear them live.
Deb's night out was also released as a single which shows their quiter side and some of the electronics they incorporate sparingly into their albums.
The album finishes with lead man Jon Toogood screaming the line "Get Up!!" over ear-bleeding distortion. And god you do.
10 years on this is still a MUST HAVE album. The boys still play tracks from this album live and the fans go nuts.
If you feel your missing something in your record collection, then it's most probably this album!
Go & buy this album RIGHT NOW !!!! .......2004-12-23
This is quite possibly one of my favourite albums of all time, nothing sounds like KILLJOY. Shihad have really changed their sound & direction with every release, this was ahead of their time as was their first album Churn I feel. The songs here are full of sincerity & depth. I am not a huge fan of what they have produced from the last 9 years but was blown away by this album the very most from Shihad. Go buy it, then Churn you won't be dissapointed.... : )
Buy this CD and be happy.......2004-08-27
This is one of the best CDs I own! It has good music and meaningful lyrics, a rare combo these days. They manage to express their dismay about the current world situation and their personal issues intelligently rather than just 'I'm young and pissed, just because.' Not to scare away anyone who just wants a good rock CD, because it is definitely that too. You can always get lost in the guitar without getting caught up in anything too political. I like this CD far better than Shihad's subsequent releases (not that I don't enjoy those as well) it just feels raw and unpolished, something that cannot be said about General Electric, ect. Buy it, buy it now!

It doesnt get much better.......2002-09-13
I was fortunate enough to have been able to see Shihad a few times live and was an instant fan. Now that Im living back in the States Im in withdrawl. I cant wait for them to the States in '03. But this album is solid. It is a must have for any CD collection. I predict once Pacifiers (the bands new name) new album hits the US all back catalog sales will also take off in the States.
Shihad WILL rule the world!.......2000-06-14
Shihad are easily the best NZ band, hell the're even in the running for best band in the world! This album is not their best but definately their most accessible. "Home Again" should be the NZ national anthem and I know if it somehow got heavy rotation in the U.S. it would break this band. Other choice cuts are the uplifting "A Day Away", strangely depressing "Y'r Head is A Rock"(I don't even know what this song is about), the fast punk rock of "LaLa land" and many more. Buy it! Now!
Brilliant hard-edged rock.......1998-09-17
Shihad are the masters of riff-driven rock. This album isn't their best (check out their second album 'Killjoy'), but still shows off their superb skill at combining monster riffs with great melodies. Tom Larkin's drumming is always a joy to listen to, and the rest of the band continue to evolve their sounds into new areas. Great!

Album Description
Love Is The New Hate was recorded at the Armoury in Vancouver in September '04, which turned out to be the perfect, unobtrusive facilitator to capture the primal rush of the new songs. Once again they turned to their old friend GGGarth Richardson, the producer of their classic of 2000, The General Electric. The first single'Alive', is Shihad's darkest, heaviest song in many a year, but elevated by a blinding streak of sky-bound melody in the chorus. It struck the keynote for an album that would take SHIHAD back to the urgent ferocity of their earliest work, but immeasurably boosted by ten years worth of experience. From a lyrical point of view, other tracks on the album include titles such as 'Shot In The Head', 'Saddest Song In The World', 'Guts And Glory' and 'Stop' describing the visceral genesis and passionate declarations at the heart of the album. Warner. 2005.

Customer Reviews:
hahahahaha @ Rock God (USA).......2006-08-17
So the last guy reviewed this - and I'm assuming he wasn't being sarcastic - but he suggested that Shihad should "change their name back to Pacifier" and this album is "basically Pacifier without all the catchy hooks" and some other stuff. Dude - that's precisely why Shihad is BETTER than Pacifier was. It's just amusing that after all the BS that NZ/AUS fans put Shihad thru for changing their name and sound to Pacifier, that when they go back to their roots, US fans like this guy (all 12 of them!) are now going to give them grief.
Anyway, this is my favourite Shihad album in a while. I think it stands up their with The General Electric and actually I think I like it better. I'm gonna go home and listen to this tonight now!
Seriously, Pacifier was WAY better.........2006-08-01
This is alright, but they need to change their name back to Pacifier and bust out some more hard rockin grunge songs like Semi-Normal, Something's Wrong, Bullitproof, etc... This is basically Pacifier without all the catchy hooks and flare...somewhat mediocre night in terms of music and vocals.
Copying themselves........2005-09-25
Unfortunatly this band "Shihad" are way to busy trying to be their "Killjoy" album again, copying it and trying to repeat themselves.
Its a shame, cause they could of really made a great album, but this just is'nt the Shihad that made them what they really are.
Get Churn, Killjoy, Shihad, The general electric.
They can still rock..........2005-09-01
After the ill-fated "Pacifier" stage, Shihad have changed their name back to (duh) Shihad. And I wouldn't want it any other way. This album is somewhat deeper than some of the others. There are the hard rockers (Shot in the Head which has a killer video, All the Young Facists, another great vid) and some more laid back tunes a la The Saddest Song in the World. All songs are excellent, and I couldn't pick just one. A must-have for any hard-rock fan, and definetely one for the New Zealanders.
Best album this centuary.......2005-07-28
I was a Shihad fan lost in the wilderness; I really could not get into The General Electric or Pacifier. I didn't have high expectations for this album, bought it out of habit mostly, expecting to play it a couple of songs, dig a few, and then shelve it. Boy was I pleasantly surprised. This album rocks, it's uncompromising, relentless, and great. Ironically this work which was written for one audience only: Shihad, is much more accessible, listenable too, and enjoyable than their radio focused forays. I had lost faith in music from this centuary however this CD has changed that. All is forgiven boys.

New Zealand Doing What It Does Best.......2002-08-29
I am a devoted Shihad/Pacifier Fan who fully supports their recent name change and wishes them all the best for further sucess in America. Anyway this particular album used to be my least favourite of the quartet until I decided listen to it while studying a few nights ago. I was blown away, I couldn't help but get up and play air guitar. Screwtop, with it's insane riffs and brutal drumming it had me in a frenzy. This hole album has had a lasting effect on me now despite in my opinion some of the track sounding quite similar.
The Opening Track, Factory starts with a interesting drum start played on the high-hat before it brings in a huge verse and chorus and thats pratty much the tone for the whole album, Raw Metal. Although Stations allows you to breathe for a while it still maintains a sense of raw emotion that hasn't been topped in another of their albums. Although they may sound fresher and more polished now it doesn't quite reach the energy level produced with a listen to this. Shihad must have been fired before the went into the studio for this one and It shows in every track. Killer Debut, No Question.
Churning guitars and brutal rhythms.......2000-12-20
Shihad's first LP suffers not through its lack of grunt or angst, but sometimes through an excess of industrially churning guitars and brutal drums and bass. This is not necessarily a bad thing - especially so when softer tracks such as 'Bone Harvest' and 'Stations' are interspersed throughout the white-hot metal to cool things down a bit. The latter of the two, in particular, is a beautifully slow burning rock song that hints of things that were later to come in Shihad's catalogue. 'I Only Said', the single that unexpectedly went to no.3 on the NZ singles chart, is the standout track on the album. Throughout, with the aid of Killing Joke maestro Jaz Coleman, lead singer Toogood rails against conformity, mechanistic society ('Factory' and 'The Happy Meal') and vents his spleen in such a angry fashion that its impossible not to feel his angst even if sometimes its unclear just what the hell hes raving on about. Anger, does, of course, mix perfectly with rock and roll - and on 'Churn' Shihad gets the mix almost exactly right.
