This soundtrack to City of Angels has a mighty tall order to fill. The film is a remake of Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire, and the German director is known for his effective use of music. But where Wenders can call on his friends such as R.E.M. and Elvis Costello to contribute songs, City of Angels feels more like a marketing device. No less than half the selections are by Warner Bros. artists, including some new music by Alanis Morissette, her first since Jagged Little Pill. That song, "Uninvited," is the album's highlight, a restrained modal ballad in the mode of Zeppelin's "Kashmir." The rest alternates between other female stars such as Paula Cole and Sarah McLachlan and bluesy selections from Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, and Eric Clapton. --Steven Mirkin

4 out of 5 stars City of Angels Soundtrack.......2006-06-25

Items were shipped within two days, and I loved the music from the movie.

4 out of 5 stars An average soundtrack resting on the shoulders of one masterpiece..........2006-04-27

Now don't be so quick to hate based on my title here...I do love this soundtrack, but what I mean is that you have one BRILLIANT track and then an album of good tracks...I think the major problem was placing this BRILLIANT track in second place, for placing it on the outset of the album only sets you up for dissapointment. Yes, this track is 'Uninvited' by Alanis Morissette, which is haunting, bewitching and mezmerizing to say the least. Alanis, a wonderfully talented singer at that, puts together her finest piece of music ever and manages to real you in from the first word to the last, and that musical arangment, I mean come on...it's beautiful, eerie and enchanting all at the same time, and when it all breaks down towards the end after she utters the word "slide" and the violins get violent almost it's just one of my favorite pieces of music let alone the vocal masterclass that it is. So there you have it, the biggest reason to purchase this album...and it's a great reason, but the fact that it's the only reason stands to reitterate my opening comment. I mean, there are other good or even great songs like 'Iris' which was radio ready almost as soon as it was recorded, and the song itself is a beautiful and inspired song, one of the Goo Goo Dolls best efforts, and Sarah McLachlan, who possesses one of the most angelic voices ever, delivers a solid track 'Angel' and even Paula Cole delivers with 'Feelin Love' and The Jimi Hendrix instrumental 'Red House' but none of these tracks even come close to touching the power in 'Uninvited'. Some of the songs are good but nothing spectacular, much like the opener 'If God Will Send His Angels' by the glorious U2 and I guess maybe I expect too much but this song just left me saying "Is this for real?" It could have, no let me rephrase that, SHOULD have been much better. Eric Clapton, a genious that he is, delivers one of the most annoying tracks here, I think mainly because it drags on for over 7 minutes! And then there are tracks that hurt to listen to, like Peter Gabriel's 'I Grieve' which is ear-splitting terrible. At least Gabriel Yared's score is just beautiful. So, the album is not a complete let down, but it just had huge shoes to fill beings that one of the greatest songs of all time had graced the track listing...Now they could have followed in Titanics footsteps and released a score only with Alanis adding her masterpiece, and then maybe this would have been a 5 star rating, but the weight of the remaining tracks brought Alanis's beauty down just enough. (By the way, I'm still pretty P.O.'ed that 'Uninvited' did not take home the oscar for best original song...it deserved it hands down!)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent all around.......2006-03-17

I bought this soundtrack after I saw the movie back in 98. I fell in love with every song on it and played it often. When I was stressed out, I would play one of Gabriel Yared's and let the stress drain out of my fingers. About a year ago, I had many of my favorite cd's stolen from the car and this was one of them. It killed me not to have it. I'm buying it again because I truely miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic Selection .......2006-03-11

Contains an eclectic selection ranging from blues to anthems. Very pleasant listening for most music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2005-10-31

this CD is one of my top 5 favorite CDs. as far as soundtracks go - this one and one other are my favs. (the other? you want to know? it's Boys on the Side) it's not that I even like the movie - cause I don't. just that the soundtrack is soooooooo good!

my dear husband, Norman, and I have had great sex to this CD more times than I can count. and I fall asleep to it several times a month. I keep it next to my bed.

the songs -

If God Will Send His Angels - very soft, sweet, sultry, kind.
Uninvited - Alanis Morissette, haunting, sultry, memorable.
Mama, You Got A Daughter - love it! I want a whole CD with just this guy! John Lee Hooker - New Orleans kinda blues - so good. Angel - sweet, Sarah McLachlan. yummy good.
Iris - beyond beautiful. Goo Goo Dolls.

the rest, all good. Jimmi, U2, what a cast! as a compilation - it is very very good.

buy it from a nice seller on Amazon, I did!

3 out of 5 stars not as good.......2007-05-15

Not even close to being as good as the first "Crow"'s soundtrack. Too repeatitive to my ears.

3 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as the first but it's not without some great tracks..........2006-09-23

Straight to the point. This album is not nearly as good as the first. But Hole, Rob Zombie, Filter, Pj Harvey, Bush (surprisingly amazing with the Joy Division cover... cause apparently this franchise really digs those), and Iggy Pop all have great songs so it certainly isn't a waste of money. But many of the other songs(and artists) have not withstood the test of time. I would say go grab some of the songs off of this, and a couple of the songs of the abysmal follow up (The Crow 3: A Movie No One Has Seen) and call it a day.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Gloomy Compilation.......2005-10-16

The Crow: City of Angels soundtrack is an absolutely beautiful, yet utterly gloomy and dark compilation from the best of the mid 90's alt-rock, and hip-hop, scene.

The album features a handful of covers (including Hole's awesome cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Gold Dust Woman" and Bush's adequately dark Joydivision track, "In A Lonely Place"), some b-sides from the best of the rap metal scene (Korn's "Sean Olson" and the ripping Deftones track "Teething") and some of the absolute BEST low-key collaborations of the decade (rounded out by 4 Non-Blondes Linda Perry & Jefferson Airplane's Grace Slick on "Knock Me Out" and my personal favourite track on the disc, Tricky and The Gravediggaz trading some creepy and unnerving verses on the ultra-ambient "Tonite is A Special Nite"). Other alt-rock favourites such as Filter, Toadies and the underrated NY Loose appear also, offering some rare tracks that really bring a smooth and solid cohesiveness to the package.

The album faithfully and effectively carries on the dark and melancholy mood inspired by the films themselves, and there is never really a dull moment on the disc. A teriffic soundtrack album, worthy of picking up for any fans of dark and gloomy rock, harsh alternative or for fans of the movie(s) themselves. Other mentionables include PJ Harvey's "Naked Cousin" and Iggy Pop's energetic live performance of "I Wanna Be Your Dog". Do not pass this one over.

4 out of 5 stars Filter, Bush, the Toadies....Remember these bands?.......2005-07-13

I've been carrying around a battle-scarred copy of this CD for years. While I don't revisit the alt-rock hits at the beginning, I have discovered a jewel near the end of the disc - Iggy Pop's live version of "I Wanna Be Your Dog". It is an absolutely blistering track. I don't know how many people out there are Stooges fans, but this version beats the original on their first album, hands down. Iggy manages to pack more power and sleaze into 3 minutes than any of these other bands can put on an album.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!!!.......2004-07-23

I HAD to give this CD 5 stars since it is one of the VERY FEW cd's I've bought over the past decade where I like every song (one of four actually, the others being AC/DC - Live, Weird Al - Bad Hair Day and Gravity Kills self titled album). I bought it when it first came out and still listen to it today. The songs blend well together and carry the emotion of The Crow legacy with them. I rate this album the best in the series.

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Standup comedian, actress, and singer Lea DeLaria presents a less confrontational image here than she did on 1994's Bulldyke in a China Shop, adopting the role of seductive, witty, confident, and heterosexual jazz chanteuse to perfection. Her voice ranges from little-girl-lost innocence to harder-edged tones, both suited to the opening "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd." With stylings from Billie Holiday to Judy Garland, "I've Got Your Number" heads straight for the heart of 1950s big-band balladry, improvised scat vocals proving DeLaria can swing with the best. "Cool" is anything but, the accompaniment understated, that voice dripping with the promise of sex. In "With Every Breath I Take," we get to imagine every late night smoky bar in every old Hollywood film we've ever seen--while it is pastiche, the characterization is startlingly evocative.

DeLaria sums it up with "All That Jazz," confidently suggesting, following her recent twin roles in the lavishly acclaimed 2000 Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show, that this girl just wants to have fun playing bad. When she sings "Life Has Been Good to Me," she has such an upbeat twinkle, you suspect she means every word. --Gary S. Dalkin

4 out of 5 stars if you like female jazz vocalists you'll love this album.......2004-07-27

I wish Delaria would put out more albums like this one. Her voice and interpretation of the songs on the album are really great and withstand lots of repeat plays. Highly recommended. Many of the cuts are worth 5 stars, but I didn't really like all of her song choices, so that's why I rated the album 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone does it, and seldom as well..........2004-04-10

All I can say is...WOW.
When my partner and I saw Lea perform her routine in P-town, she wowed us with a stunning version of one of my all-time favorites, "The Ballad of Sweeny Todd." We bought her CD on the spot and it stayed in my car's CD player for weeks on end (and then I only took it out because I had to switch cars).
I enjoyed the whole album, but I found myself playing the first track over and over, and even singing it in the shower. I must disagree with the "Cigar" review on all counts, at least regarding this track. The song lends itself so beautifully to swingin' jazz I can't believe nobody thought of it before. But I'm glad no one has, because Lea DeLaria knocks it out of the park. The smooth delivery is perfect for the dry humor of the lyrics, her belts are such a perfect blend of head and chest it sends chills up my spine, and the arrangement is spot-on. The best part - it stands up beautifully to repeat listenings; I just can't grow tired of this rendition. The opening track alone is worth twice the price of this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Finally, another album.......2003-05-10

Lunatic Calm creates another Electronic CD that doesn't fit the mold. They continue to fuse different music styles together to create a more Alternative /Electronic sound, and on this album, more ambient type tracks. The 1st album has more "Grit" & "Edge" - and that's what I like about LC. This album is good - just lighter. Mb

5 out of 5 stars An excellent folow up........2003-04-06

Lunatic Calm has always been an excellent band. I had been looking forward to some new material from them for quite some time now. This new album does not dissapoint. It's got that same great downtempo style from their first works except a lot of the songs are now more mellow and relaxed.

Beatbox Burning and Shockwave are the two hardest track on the album and will undoubtedly be favorites of fans of the original album. The rest of the tracks are a very different yet very familiar at the same time. Think of it as an evolutionary step for the band. My favorite track is 'I Go Wild', it didn't get to me at first but sort of grows on you. Has a very nice ambient feel to it.

This CD is great, if you're already familiar with this band and liked Metropol you'll love this. If you haven't heeard of Lunatic calm before give it a whirl. This is some great techno/industrial music that you can listen to over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Great but More Dancy Than Metropol.......2003-01-30

This album is much less dark than metropol but still dark. Shackleton is quite unique with his vocals. Unlike most singers these days, he doesn't scream or strain his voice. but anyway, Here is a track by track review for this CD:

      1. Beatbox Burning- Hard driving dance song with great drums - 9/10
      2. Sound of the Revolution- Quite cheerful medium tempo song with great chorus- 9.5/10
      3. Borderliners- Slow song with a very airy feel and great bass- 8.5/10
      4. Neverstop- Very similar to Beatbox Burning. Very anthemic- 9.5/10
      5. I go wild- Slow song. not bad- 9/10
      6. Your Future- Slow song with nice strings and piano mixed with synths and drums- 8/10
      7. Yesterday- Beautiful short ambient song- 8.5/10
      8. Shockwave- Certainly a shock after Yesterday. Realy cool acid synths, bass and guitar. Hard fast song- 9.75/10
      9. Liberation Radio- Best decsribed as funky, lots of bass- 9/10
      10. Nobody- Another very beautiful slow song with great strings- 9.75/10

      11. Resurrection City- Sounds a bit like Neverstop, Hard, very fast, long too- 9.5/10
      12. Revolution Rewind- WOW! AN ACOUSTIC GUITAR! slow version of track 2 with more dark atmosphere- 9.75/10

This is a pretty good CD. The kind of CD you drive down the road with the bass up really loud.
      Best song- Nobody
Runners up-Neverstop, Revolution Rewind, Resurection City, Shockwave, Yesterday, Beatbox Burning
      Total Score-9.5/10

5 out of 5 stars a revolution that will neverstop burning your beatbox.......2002-12-28

this Cd is great I think it is better that metropol. there are more fast songs and cool words (no bad words) my favorite songs are beatbox burning sound of the revolution neverstop i go wild and shockwave.this is worth the money they are all a bit fast but there are really fast ones and the rest are about the same. get it if you have metropol and if you like breakbeat and techno music. great cd. well bye and buy this cd.

      4 out of 5 stars A great pop album.......2007-08-02

I am a fan of Yes, this album from Mr. Anderson is not a "Yes" album, but it is very good. Catchy songs, with a really good production, the sound is just great. Favorite tracks are "Hold on to love", "Is it me", "Betcha" and the wonderful "Hurry home". I liked this one when it came out and I still enjoy it twenty years later.

      5 out of 5 stars Don't listen to nay-sayers, this is OUTSTANDING!.......2007-07-01

Jon Anderson does have a bit of a pop feel on this album. For the insane Yes fanatic that thinks Trevor Rabin is the anti-Christ and the Big Generator years are blasphemy for Yes, then don't buy this. You're so narrow-minded into the progressive side of Yes that you can't appreciate that a good musician explores many avenues and genres of music. John usually sings the more esoteric, deep, often bizarre and mystical stuff that we're accustomed to. On this album, they're mostly love songs being performed and VERY CATCHY ones at that!
Many of my FAVORITE MUSICIANS FROM TOTO including David Paich, Steve Porcaro, the legendary drummer Jeff Porcaro, the guitar genius Steve Lukather, and many others contributed to this cd and it's so evident! The music is first rate, touching, romantic, and fun.

No, it's not "Close to the Edge," but it's beautiful to listen to. I'm a huge Yes fan and love the progressive stuff, but once in a while have an open mind!

      Buy this album...you'll love it!!

4 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag from Yes Vocalist Jon Anderson.......2005-09-29

"City of Love" is a good - but not great- solo album from Yes singer Jon Anderson. Half of the songs are terrific, mostly in the second half of the album.

The album was released in 1988, a challenging time for Jon. He was looking to quit his day job - as leader singer for Yes - and probably hoped to emulate Phil Collins' solo success by appealing to the adult contemporary crowd.

Nonetheless, at least half of the album is very good. "Top Of The World" is the closest to a Yes song on the album. It's an extended track with a dramatic, prog-rock feel. Another highlight is "New Civilization," which features a children's choir and bubbles with optimism. Hurry Home, with its timeless, world-music feel, could have been on Jon's solo masterpiece, "Olias of Sunhillow."

Three other tracks - "For You," " If It Wasn't for Love," and "It's On Fire" - are mellow, atmospheric tracks focusing on Jon's angelic vocals, reminiscent of Jon's 1980 solo release, "Song of Seven."

The downside to the album is that some of the tracks are easy-listening ballads. Members of Toto played on this album, so some parts sound a lot like Toto, especially "Hold On To Love," "Is It Me," and "In A Lifetime." And we're talking Toto ballads.

But while "In the City of Angels" isn't Jon's best solo album, there are enough good tracks to make this of interest to any Yes fan. Recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars commercial...but juicy.......2005-03-04

This is (so far) my first Jon Anderson solo album. Beforehand I've heard him with Vangelis, Mike Oldfield and Kitaro, but never "alone". This lovely album really grew on me. Well, sure it's very poppy and sometimes too sweet, as for a progrock star, but still I love it. Lyrics are also exceptional - poetic, romantic, sometimes maybe a bit overdone, but very much in his style. Songs like "It's on Fire", "Betcha", "Top of the World" and "New Civilization" are really great tunes. I can't help singing along with the energetic "Betcha" and the other aforementioned song, "Top of the World" is simply the best song here.
There are moments on this album, that are more experimental, like "Sundancing" or "Hurry Home" (which sounds like a pop meets scottish folk mixture), but the whole album is pleasant enough, good for driving music, I suppose. I rate it five stars, but bear in mind that I don't know his other releases.
It's now like a week that I've been listening to ths album. everyday. It's heaven. It's on fire - my soul.

3 out of 5 stars some good, some blahh.......2003-05-01

The only song I'd put on a "Jonsongs" sampler is "Hurry Home."

probably back in 1990 or 1991 and I have to tell you I fell in love with it instantly and it's a shame that they never released anything else because that song called Boy From Hell's Kitchen is absolutely excellent. and the rest of the CD isn't at all bad. I would have loved to have seen them live.

      5 out of 5 stars Guns N Who ?.......2006-08-16

The Rock City Angels were the east coast answer to Guns N Roses. The band scratched and clawed their way out of Ft Lauderdale Florida to a multi-million dollar deal on Geffen Records. That would be a dream for most young rockers. This dream slowly became a nightmare of what could of been. A dark cloud hangs over this band like Hurricane Andrew hanging over Ne 2 Nd Ave. Origanlly called The Abusers Bobby Bondage and the correctly named Andy Panik were as punk as they come. Another local band The Kids were the Abusers running buddies.Their young talented guitar player would drift between the bands. There was something different about this kid he had much bigger plans for his future so when the Kids and the newly Renamed Rock City Angels moved to LA LA land in 1985 this kid would play with both bands by night and hit endless auditions during the day. The Angels would tweek the line up until Geffen Records heard some local lp with the RCA on there doing Teenage Lipstick Girls. All was well a new album deal and the future looked bright ... WRONG >>> First comes the news that the Angels would soon need a new guitar player. Johnny Depp just got Nightmare on Elm Street.More bad news followed Geffen also signed an LA band with the same sound look and pension for destruction . So the word came down the Angels were to become Rebels, Delta Rebels to record their debut cd. To make a very long story short In Memphis with Tom Zuzat the recorded a double album, derailed a freight train and consumed all the beverages and anything else they could get their hands on! One of the songs was Mary co -wrote by Johnny Depp. But Liza Jo co-penned by future country star David Lee Murphy is more of a blues fest than rock...but it worked. All the songs on this album are Rock N Roll classics. South of the Border by far is the most moving and powerful track on the album. The Memphis Horns were used on this track and clearly it made a great song better! Deep Inside My Heart the opening track smacks you right in the face and takes you right down Alligator Alley to The Dark End of The Street. And Boys from Hells Kitchen is not about New York City with all due respect but a rundown section in Ft Lauderdale near the airport which became a haven for misguided youth and druggies, hookers. These Arms are Made By Otis Redding at first seems out of place but after listening a few times it becomes part of this masterpiece. Hush Child was the most talked about song on the album. For those of us who rememeber the shows at Godmothers a lesbian dive bar recall the song being played slowly masterfully by Davy Gregg. The sped up version grows on you as Andy and Bobby sing the chorus.Beyond Babylon is one the most musically challnging on the album and pleasant surprises. After coming back to LA the rumor that has followed this band is that David Geffen after signing band after band had a budget crisis and had to flip a coin on who was gonna get the big push from A&R. The coin toss whether you believe in ledgends sealed the fate for the Rock City Angels. The winner of that toss in late 1986 was Guns N Roses. The two most important things to remember about The Rock City Angels is play it loud and never let Andy Panik crash at your place!!

      4 out of 5 stars I Was a Teenage Rock City Angel.......2006-08-16

I first got a bootleg tape from my friend Andy . At the time I was just getting my feet wet in heavy metal . In 1984 in South Florida we did not have a voice all we had was Skynrd and well Miami Vice Driven music. The Rock City Angels came out of the early 80's punk movement and brougt the Kaos of punk to Glam Rock and set the bar for all to come. Teenage Lipstick Boys was like a battle cry for all of kids wearing our mothers make up and keeping Aqua Net in business.Dark Angels still had the punk drone to it. The stand out song on the is for me the cover of LA Woman . As for Johnny Depp he sadly never played on this album . Davy Gregg aka Davy Lightning was the axe on this record that stood out. Gigs at Godmothers and The Jockey Pub would often start with a high not but must often end in disater!. This band was the single biggest influence in my music career which shows because I am 35 and still not signed! If you love the New York Dolls and The Dead Boys ....Go buy their F**KING Albums.. This is nothing like you have ever or will hear!!

      5 out of 5 stars Rock City Angels...still Rockin........2006-07-05

For fans of Rock City Angels, this is a little different than the one album everyone remembers.
this is the punk rock version of the band before geffen records decided they needed a change.
i am a Big fan of the Young Man Blues, but this is raw and raunchy, the way rock was meant to be !!!
An absolute delight for true rock fans of the old style of in your face rock-n-roll..
      definitely worth the buy..

5 out of 5 stars Rock City Angels .......2004-09-24

The Rock City Angels got their start in S. Fla in the 80's then moved to LA where they were eventually signed by Geffen Records. This CD is very different from "The Young Man's Blues" lp released by Geffen. This CD reflects who the Angels were in the S. Fla days - and they were very exciting. For more information about the S. Fla version(s) of THe Rock City Angel, visit http://www.goldcoastlive.com The band was featured on the cover, interviewed, reviewed so on and so forth. A good chunk of their history is documented here.

5 out of 5 stars get the musicians on the cd right.......2003-07-15

the rock city angels like most bands forgot were they came from and who played on the actual studio tracks. this cd was originally recorded at prisma studios ft. lauderdale fla.june of 1984. a fine drummer named dirty dave johns recorded all the drum tracks (i6) in all, and a hell of a guitar player named taggart reid tracked the recording like there was no tomorrow. after the fact ,the 2 founding members did what most artists do, pack up and get the songs heard by the industry. i know when you listen to this cd, you will get your moneys worth. its so on the money , energetic and straight forward balls to the wall rock n roll. it is a master piece in glam punk history. johnny thunders and the dolls would be proud. again dirty dave johns did his dirty deeds done dirt cheap. thanx and enjoy......

4 out of 5 stars Rock City Angels.......2003-01-17

Ok this album was intended to be released before their debut "young mans blues". I loved YMB, so was thrilled to see this CD finally out. It's musically different, but still rocks.
If you like the New York Dolls, you'll love this CD. It could be a dolls release. I havn't heard a band sound so much like a single influence since Rhinobucket released thier AC/DC influenced debut. Bobby Durango sounds just like David Johannson, and they even do a Johnny Thunders cover.
If you like raw sleazy rock check in out.
